Optical aberrations prevent telescopes from reaching their theoretical diffraction limit. Once estimated, these aberrations can be compensated for using deformable mirrors in a closed loop. Focal plane wavefront sensing enables the estimation of the aberrations on the complete optical path, directly from the images taken by the scientific sensor. However, current focal plane wavefront sensing methods rely on physical models whose inaccuracies may limit the overall performance of the correction. The aim of this study is to develop a data-driven method using model-free reinforcement learning to automatically perform the estimation and correction of the aberrations, using only phase diversity images acquired around the focal plane as inputs. We formulate the correction problem within the framework of reinforcement learning and train an agent on simulated data. We show that the method is able to reliably learn an efficient control strategy for various realistic conditions. Our method also demonstrates robustness to a wide range of noise levels.

Phase change materials (PCMs) have gained a tremendous interest as a means to actively tune nanophotonic devices through the large optical modulation produced by their amorphous to crystalline reversible transition. Recently, materials such as Sb$_2$S$_3$ emerged as particularly promising low loss PCMs, with both large refractive index modulations and transparency in the visible and NIR. Controlling the local and reversible phase transition in this material is of major importance for future applications, and an appealing method to do so is to exploit pulsed lasers. Yet, the physics and limits involved in the optical switching of Sb$_2$S$_3$ are not yet well understood. Here, we investigate the reversible laser-induced phase transition of Sb$_2$S$_3$, focusing specifically on the mechanisms that drive the optically induced amorphization, with multi-physics considerations including the optical and thermal properties of the PCM and its environment. We theoretically and experimentally determine the laser energy threshold for reversibly changing the phase of the PCM, not only between fully amorphous and crystalline states but also between partially recrystallized states. We then reveal the non-negligible impact of the material's polycrystallinity and anisotropy on the power thresholds for optical switching. Finally, we address the challenges related to laser amorphization of thick Sb$_2$S$_3$ layers, as well as strategies to overcome them. These results enable a qualitative and quantitative understanding of the physics behind the optically-induced reversible change of phase in Sb$_2$S$_3$ layers.

Their non-volatile nature as well as rapid switching speeds make them highly desirable for develo** advanced and energy-efficient optical communication technologies. Ongoing research efforts in exploring new PCMs, optimizing device designs, and overcoming existing challenges are driving the development of innovative and high-performance optical switches for the next generation of photonics applications. In this study, we design and experimentally demonstrate a novel optical amplitude switch design incorporating PCM antimony trisulfide (Sb2S3) based on the Brewster angle phenomenon.

In astrophysics, several key questions in the hard X soft Gamma-ray range (above 100 keV) require sensitivity and angular resolution that are hardly achievable with current technologies. Therefore, a new kind of instrument able to focus hard X and gamma-rays is essential. Broad band Laue lenses seem to be the only solution to fulfil these requirements, significantly improving the sensitivity and angular resolution of the X and gamma-ray telescopes. This type of high-energy optics will require highly performing focal plane detectors in terms of detection efficiency, spatial resolution, and spectroscopy. This paper presents the results obtained in the project 'Technological Readiness Increase for Laue Lenses (TRILL)' framework using a Caliste-HD detector module. This detector is a pixel spectrometer developed at CEA (Commissariat a Energie Atomique, Saclay, France). It is used to acquire spectroscopic images of the focal spot produced by Laue Lens bent crystals under a hard X-ray beam at the LARIX facility (University of Ferrara, Italy).

Subwavelength nanoparticles can support electromagnetic resonances with distinct features depending on their size, shape and nature. For example, electric and magnetic Mie resonances occur in dielectric particles, while plasmonic resonances appear in metals. Here, we experimentally demonstrate that the multipolar resonances hosted by VO2 nanocrystals can be dynamically tuned and switched thanks to the insulator-to-metal transition of VO2. Using both Mie theory and Maxwell Garnett effective medium theory, we retrieve the complex refractive index of the effective medium composed of a slab of VO2 nanospheres embedded in SiO2 and show that such a resulting metamaterial presents distinct optical tunability compared to unpatterned VO2. We further show that this provides a new degree of freedom to design low-loss phase-change metamaterials with designer optical tunability and actively controlled light scattering.

Current effective medium theories for nano-shells are reviewed. A new method for calculating the effective dielectric function of a core-shell nanoparticle is presented and compared with existing theories showing clear advantages in most conditions. It consists of introducing radiating effects in the polariz- ability of the effective sphere, and considering the exact polarizability of the core-shell constructed from the Mie scattering coefficient. This new approach can be considered as an useful tool for designing coated particles with desired plasmonic properties and engineering the effective permittivity of composites with core-shell type inclusions which are used in photocatalysis and solar energy harvesting applications.
