All-optical spin switching (AOS) is a new phenomenon found in a small group of magnetic media, where a single laser pulse can switch spins from one direction to another, without assistance of a magnetic field, on a time scale much shorter than existing magnetic technology. However, despite intensive efforts over a decade, its underlying working principle remains elusive. Here through manganese-based Heusler ferrimagnets, we show that a group of flat bands around the Fermi level act as gateway states to form efficient channels or spin switching, where their noncentrosymmetry allows us to correlate the spin dynamics to the second-order optical response. To quantify their efficacy, we introduce the third-rank Pancharatnam-Berry tensor (PB tensor), $\boldsymbolη^{(3)}=\langle i |{\bf p} |m\rangle \langle m|{\bf p} |f\rangle \langle f|{\bf p} |i\rangle,$ where $|i\rangle$, $|m\rangle$ and $|f\rangle$ are initial, intermediate and final band states, respectively, and ${\bf p}$ is the momentum operator. A picture emerges: Those which show AOS, such as the recently discovered Mn$_2$RuGa, always have a large PB tensor element} but have a small sublattice spin moment ratio, consistent with the prior experimental small remanence criterion. This does not only reveal that the delicate balance between the large PB tensor element and the small sublattice spin ratio plays a decisive role in AOS, but also, conceptually, connects the $n$th-order nonlinear optics to $(n+1)$th-rank PB tensors in general.

All-optical spin switching (AOS) represents a new frontier in magnetic storage technology -- spin manipulation without a magnetic field, -- but its underlying working principle is not well understood. Many AOS ferrimagnets such as GdFeCo are amorphous and renders the high-level first-principles study unfeasible. The crystalline half-metallic Heusler Mn$_2$RuGa presents an opportunity. Here we carry out hitherto the comprehensive density functional investigation into the material properties of Mn$_2$RuGa, and introduce two concepts - the spin anchor site and the optical active site - as two pillars for AOS in ferrimagnets. In Mn$_2$RuGa, Mn$(4a)$ serves as the spin anchor site, whose band structure is below the Fermi level and has a strong spin moment, while Mn$(4c)$ is the optical active site whose band crosses the Fermi level. Our magneto-optical Kerr spectrum and band structure calculation jointly reveal that the delicate competition between the Ru-$4d$ and Ga-$4p$ states is responsible for the creation of these two sites. These two sites found here not only present a unified picture for both Mn$_2$RuGa and GdFeCo, but also open the door for the future applications. Specifically, we propose a Mn$_2$Ru$_x$Ga-based magnetic tunnel junction where a single laser pulse can control magnetoresistance.

We present a study of the propagation of three-dimensional (3D) bipolar electromagnetic ultrashort pulses in an inhomogeneous array of semiconductor carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in the presence of a control high-frequency (HF) electric field. The inhomogeneity is present in the form of a layer with an increased concentration of conduction electrons, which acts as a barrier for the propagation of ultrashort electromagnetic pulses through the CNT array. The dynamics of the pulse is described by a nonlinear equation for the vector potential of the electromagnetic field (it takes the form of a 3D generalization of the sine-Gordon equation), derived from the Maxwell's equations and averaged over the period of the HF control field. By means of systematic simulations, we demonstrate that, depending on the amplitude and frequency of the HF control, the ultrashort pulse approaching the barrier layer either passes it or bounces back. The layer's transmissivity for the incident pulse is significantly affected by the amplitude and frequency of the HF control field, with the reflection coefficient nearly vanishing in intervals that make up a discrete set of transparency windows, which resembles the effect of the electromagnetically-induced transparency. Having passed the barrier, the ultrashort pulse continues to propagate, kee** its spatiotemporal integrity. The results may be used for the design of soliton valves, with the transmissivity of the soliton stream accurately controlled by the HF field.

We study the propagation of three-dimensional bipolar ultrashort electromagnetic pulses in an array of semiconductor carbon nanotubes at times much longer than the pulse duration, yet still shorter than the relaxation time in the system. The interaction of the electromagnetic field with the electronic subsystem of the medium is described by means of Maxwell's equations, taking into account the field inhomogeneity along the nanotube axis beyond the approximation of slowly varying amplitudes and phases. A model is proposed for the analysis of the dynamics of an electromagnetic pulse in the form of an effective equation for the vector potential of the field. Our numerical analysis demonstrates the possibility of a satisfactory description of the evolution of the pulse field at large times by means of a three-dimensional generalization of the sine-Gordon and double sine-Gordon equations.

A theoretical analysis of homeotropic alignment induced by nanoparticles (NPs) in a nematic liquid crystal (NLC) sample cell is presented. It is found that such alignment on the surface of a NP causes a change in the orientation of the molecular director near the surface, which in turn induces variations in the elastic constants and free energy. The induced NLC properties allow coupling between nearby NPs, mediated by the NLC molecules. The rotation of the coupled NPs close to the substrate tends to induce a long-range orientation of the NLC molecular director, leading to modification in the alignment at the interface of NLC and substrate which induces the orientation from homogeneous (planar) to homeotropic (vertical) in the bulk material.

Superatomic molecular orbitals (SAMO) in C60 are ideal building blocks for functional nanostructures. However, imaging them spatially in the gas phase has been unsuccessful. It is found experimentally that if C60 is excited by an 800-nm laser, the photoelectron casts an anisotropic velocity image, but the image becomes isotropic if excited at a 400-nm wavelength. This diffuse image difference has been attributed to electron thermal ionization, but more recent experiments (800 nm) reveal a clear non-diffuse image superimposed on the diffuse image, whose origin remains a mystery. Here we show that the non-diffuse anisotropic image is the precursor of the $f$ SAMO. We predict that four 800-nm photons can directly access the $1f$ SAMO, and with one more photon, can image the orbital, with the photoelectron angular distribution having two maxima at 0$^\circ$ and 180$^\circ$ and two humps separated by 56.5$^\circ$. Since two 400-nm photons only resonantly excite the spherical $1s$ SAMO and four 800-nm photon excite the anisotropic $1f$ SAMO, our finding gives a natural explanation of the non-diffuse image difference, complementing the thermal scenario.

Specific features of nonlinear interference processes at quantum transitions in near- and fully-resonant optically-dense Doppler-broadened medium are studied. The feasibility of overcoming of the fundamental limitation on a velocity-interval of resonantly coupled molecules imposed by the Doppler effect is shown based on quantum coherence. This increases the efficiency of nonlinear-optical processes in atomic and molecular gases that possess the most narrow and strongest resonances. The possibility of all-optical switching of the medium to opaque or, alternatively, to absolutely transparent, or even to strongly-amplifying states is explored, which is controlled by a small variation of two driving radiations. The required intensities of the control fields are shown to be typical for cw lasers. These effects are associated with four-wave mixing accompanied by Stokes gain and by their interference in fully- and near-resonant optically-dense far-from-degenerate double-Lambda medium. Optimum conditions for inversionless amplification of short-wavelength radiation above the oscillation threshold at the expense of the longer-wavelength control fields, as well as for Raman gain of the generated idle infrared radiation, are investigated. The outcomes are illustrated with numerical simulations applied to sodium dimer vapor. Similar schemes can be realized in doped solids and in fiber optics.

A scheme is analyzed for effcient generation of vacuum ultraviolet radiation through four-wave mixing processes assisted by the technique of Stark-chirped rapid adiabatic passage. These opportunities are associated with pulse excitation of laddertype short-wavelength two-photon atomic or molecular transitions so that relaxation processes can be neglected. In this three-laser technique, a delayed-pulse of strong oR-resonant infrared radiation sweeps the laser-induced Stark-shift of a two-photon transition in a such way that facilitates robust maximum two-photon coherence induced by the first ultraviolet laser. A judiciously delayed third pulse scatters at this coherence and generates short-wavelength radiation. A theoretical analysis of these problems based on the density matrix is performed. A numerical model is developed to carry out simulations of a typical experiment. The results illustrate a behavior of populations, coherence and generated radiation along the medium as well as opportunities of effcient generation of deep (vacuum) ultraviolet radiation.

Based on the theory of the optical properties of fractal clusters, which is an operator-based modification of the coupled-dipole method, an alternate solution is proposed for the problem of adequately describing the evolution of optical spectra of any polydisperse silver colloid with particles falling within the range of most characteristic sizes (5 - 30 nm). This is the range over which the results of the application of the well-known methods of classical electrodynamics, including the Mie theory, disagree with experimental data. The effect of variation of the parameters of such media on optical spectra is studied by a numerical simulation, which accounts for particle electrodynamic dipole-dipole interactions. Indeed, such interactions are shown to be a key factor in determining the broadening of the sol absorption spectra during the course of fractal aggregation. A quantitative explanation is given for the reasons for the appearance of individual specific features in the contours of the spectral absorption of different types of silver colloids.
