The flatness of electro-optic frequency combs (EOFCs) generated in a single silicon ring resonator modulator (RRM) is optimized by employing harmonic superposition of the radio-frequency driving signal. A differential evolution algorithm is employed in conjunction with a simplified model of the RRM for offline optimization of the amplitudes and phases of harmonic driving signals and the operating point of the RRM. The optimized driving signals are then applied to a silicon RRM. EOFCs containing 7 and 9 lines are synthesized with a power imbalance between the lines of 2.9 dB and 5.4 dB, respectively, compared to 9.4 dB for an optimized 5-line comb generated from a single sinusoidal driving signal.

We realize a fiber Bragg grating InGaN based laser diode emitting at 400 nm and demonstrate its high coherency. Thanks to the fabrication of a narrow band fiber Bragg grating in the near-UV, we can reach single-mode and single-frequency regimes for the self-injection locked diode. The device exhibits 44 dB side-mode-suppression-ratio and mW output power. Detailed frequency noise analysis reveals sub-MHz integrated linewidth and 16 kHz intrinsic linewidth. Such a narrow linewidth laser diode in the near-UV domain with a compact and low-cost design could find applications whenever coherency and interferometric resolutions are needed.

The optical response of traditional semiconductors depends on the laser excitation power used in experiments. For two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors, laser excitation effects are anticipated to be vastly different due to complexity added by their ultimate thinness, high surface to volume ratio, and laser-membrane interaction effects. We show in this article that under laser excitation the optical properties of 2D materials undergo irreversible changes. Most surprisingly these effects take place even at low steady state excitation, which is commonly thought to be non-intrusive. In low temperature photoluminescence (PL) we show for monolayer (ML) MoSe2 samples grown by different techniques that laser treatment increases significantly the trion (i.e. charged exciton) contribution to the emission compared to the neutral exciton emission. Comparison between samples exfoliated onto different substrates shows that laser induced do** is more efficient for ML MoSe2 on SiO2/Si compared to h-BN and gold. For ML MoS2 we show that exposure to laser radiation with an average power in the $μ$W/$μ$m$^2$ range does not just increase the trion-to-exciton PL emission ratio, but may result in the irreversible disappearance of the neutral exciton PL emission and a shift of the main PL peak to lower energy.

This paper presents a theoretical and experimental investigation of optical signal regeneration properties of a non-linear optical loop mirror using a semiconductor optical amplifier as the active element (SOA-NOLM). While this device has been extensively studied for optical time division demultiplexing (OTDM) and wavelength conversion applications, our proposed approach, based on a reflective configuration, has not yet been investigated, particularly in the light of signal regeneration. The impact on the transfer function shape of different parameters, like SOA position in the interferometer and SOA input optical powers, are numerically studied to appreciate the regenerative capabilities of the device.Regenerative performances in association with a dual stage of SOA to create a 3R regenerator which preserves the data polarity and the wavelength are experimentally assessed. Thanks to this complete regenerative function, a 100.000 km error free transmission has experimentally been achieved at 10 Gb/s in a recirculating loop. The evolution of Bit Error Rate for multiple pass into the regenerator and the polarization insensitivity demonstration to input data are presented.

Recently launched high precision Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellites such as TerraSAR-X, COSMO-SkyMed, etc. present a high potential for better observation and characterization of the cryosphere. This study introduces a new approach using high frequency (X-band) SAR data and an Electromagnetic Backscattering Model (EBM) to constrain the detailed snowpack model Crocus. A snowpack EBM based on radiative transfer theory, previously used for C-band applications, is adapted for the X-band. From measured or simulated snowpack stratigraphic profiles consisting of snow optical grain radius and density, this forward model calculates the backscattering coefficient for different polarimetric channels. The output result is then compared with spaceborne TerraSAR-X acquisitions to evaluate the forward model. Next, from the EBM, the adjoint operator is developed and used in a variational analysis scheme in order to minimize the discrepancies between simulations and SAR observations. A time series of TerraSAR-X acquisitions and in-situ measurements on the Argentière glacier (Mont-Blanc massif, French Alps) are used to evaluate the EBM and the data assimilation scheme. Results indicate that snow stratigraphic profiles obtained after the analysis process show a closer agreement with the measured ones than the initial ones, and therefore demonstrate the high potential of assimilating SAR data to model of snow evolution.
