The Standard Model of particle physics describes the properties of elementary particles and their interactions remarkably well, but in particular does not account for dark matter. Isotope-shift spectroscopy is a sensitive probe of fifth forces and new particles that illuminate the dark matter sector. This method sets bounds on new bosons that couple neutrons and electrons with masses in the keV/c2 to MeV/c2 range. With increasing spectroscopic precision, such searches are limited by uncertainties of isotope masses and the understanding of nuclear structure. Here, we report on high-precision mass-ratio and isotope-shift measurements of the ytterbium isotopes $^{168,170,172,174,176}$Yb that exceed previous measurements by up to two orders of magnitude. From these measurements, we extract higher-order changes in the nuclear charge distribution along the Yb isotope chain and use these to benchmark novel ab initio calculations. Our measurements set new bounds on the existence of the proposed boson.

The atomic mass of uranium-238 has been determined to be $238.050\,787\,618(15)\,\text{u}$, improving the literature uncertainty by two orders of magnitude. It is obtained from a measurement of the mass ratio of $^{238}$U$^{47+}$ and $^{132}$Xe$^{26+}$ ions with an uncertainty of $3.5\times 10^{-12}$. The measurement was carried out with the Penning-trap mass spectrometer \textsc{Pentatrap} and was accompanied by a calculation of the binding energies $E_{\text{U}}$ and $E_{\text{Xe}}$ of the 47 and 26 missing electrons of the two highly charged ions, respectively. These binding energies were determined using an \textit{ab initio} multiconfiguration Dirac-Hartree-Fock (MCDHF) method to be $E_{\text{U}} = 39\,927(10)\,\text{eV}$ and $E_{\text{Xe}} = 8\,971.2(21)\,\text{eV}$. The new mass value will serve as a reference for high-precision mass measurements in the heavy mass region of the nuclear chart up to transuranium nuclides.

We investigate the effect of the presence of lanthanides (Z = 57- 71) on the kilonova at t~hours after the neutron star merger for the first time. For this purpose, we calculate the atomic structures and the opacities for selected lanthanides: Nd (Z = 60), Sm (Z = 62), and Eu (Z = 63). We consider the ionization degree up to tenth (XI), applicable for the ejecta at t ~ a few hours after the merger, when the temperature is T ~ 10^5 K. We find that the opacities for the highly ionized lanthanides are exceptionally high, reaching k_exp~1000 cm^2/g for Eu, due to the highly dense energy levels. Using the new opacity, we perform radiative transfer simulations to show that the early light curves become fainter by a (maximum) factor of four, in comparison to lanthanide-free ejecta at t~0.1 day. However, the period at which the light curves are affected is relatively brief due to the rapid time evolution of the opacity in the outermost layer of the ejecta. We predict that for a source at a distance of ~100 Mpc, UV brightness for lanthanide-rich ejecta shows a drop to ~21-22 mag at t~0.1 day and the UV peaks around t~0.2 day with a magnitude of ~19 mag. Future detection of such a kilonova by the existing UV satellite like Swift or the upcoming UV satellite ULTRASAT will provide useful constraints on the abundance in the outer ejecta and the corresponding nucleosynthesis conditions in the neutron star mergers.

Large-scale $\textit{ab initio}$ calculations of the electric field gradient, which constitutes the electronic contribution to the electric quadrupole hyperfine constant $B$, were performed for the $5s^25p6s$ $^{1,3}\!P^{\rm o}_1$ excited states of tin, using three independent computational strategies of the variational multiconfiguration Dirac-Hartree-Fock method and a fourth approach based on the configuration interaction Dirac-Fock-Sturm theory. For the $5s^25p6s$ $^{1}\!P^{\rm o}_1$ state, the final value of $B/Q =703(50)$ MHz/b differs by $0.4\%$ from the one recently used by Yordanov ${\it et~al.}$ [Communications Physics ${\bf 3}$, 107 (2020)] to extract the nuclear quadrupole moments, $Q$, for tin isotopes in the range $^{(117-131)}$Sn from collinear laser spectroscopy measurements. Efforts were made to provide a realistic theoretical uncertainty for the final $B/Q$ value of the $5s^25p6s\,^{1}\!P^{\rm o}_1$ state based on statistical principles and on correlation with the magnetic dipole hyperfine constant $A$.

The comparison between calculated excitation energies for the $n=4$ states and available experimental values for Fe XII indicate that the calculations are highly accurate, with uncertainties of only a few hundred cm$^{-1}$. Lines from these states are prominent in the soft X-rays. With the present calculations, several recent new identifications are confirmed. Other identifications involving $3p^2 4d$ levels in Fe~XII that were found questionable are discussed and a few new assignments are recommended. As some $n=4$ states of the other ions also show large discrepancies between experimental and calculated energies, we reassess their identification. The present study provides highly accurate atomic data for the $n=4$ states of P-like ions of astrophysical interest, for which experimental data are scarce.

Lanthanide elements play important roles as an opacity source in the ejected material from neutron star mergers. Accurate and complete atomic data are necessary to evaluate the opacities and to analyze the observed data. In this paper, we perform extended, ab-initio atomic calculations from Pr II (Z=59) to Gd II (Z=64). By using multiconfiguration Dirac-Hartree-Fock and relativistic configuration-interaction methods, implemented in the general-purpose relativistic atomic structure package GRASP2K, we calculate the energy levels and transition data of electric dipole transitions. These computations are based on strategies (with small variations) of Nd II published by Gaigalas et al. (2019). Accuracy of data is evaluated by comparing computed energy levels with the NIST database or other works. For the energy levels, we obtain the average relative accuracy of 8%, 12%, 6%, 8%, and 7% for Pr II, Pm II, Sm II, Eu II, and Gd II ions, respectively as compared with the NIST data. Accuracy of energy transfer to the wavelength as 3%, 14% and 11% for Pr II, Eu II and Gd II. Our computed E1 type transition probabilities are in good agreement with experimental values presented by other authors especially for strong transitions.

The main aim of this paper is to present accurate energy levels of the ground [Xe]$4f^{12}$ and first excited [Xe]$4f^{11}5d$ configurations of Er$^{2+}$. The energy level structure of the Er$^{2+}$ ion was computed using the multiconfiguration Dirac-Hartree-Fock and relativistic configuration interaction (RCI) methods, as implemented in the GRASP2018 program package. The Breit interaction, self-energy and vacuum polarization corrections were included in the RCI computations. The zero-first-order approach was used in the computations. Energy levels with the identification in $LS$ coupling for all (399) states belonging to the [Xe]$4f^{12}$ and [Xe]$4f^{11}5d$ configurations are presented. Electric dipole (E1) transition data between the levels of these two configurations are computed. The accuracy of the these data are evaluated by studying the behaviour of the transition rates as functions of the gauge parameter as well as by evaluating the cancellation factors. The core electron correlations were studied using different strategies. Root-mean-square deviations obtained in this study for states of the ground and excited configurations from the available experimental or semi-empirical data are 649 cm$^{-1}$, and 747 cm$^{-1}$, respectively.

Coalescence of binary neutron star give rise to electromagnetic emission, kilonova, powered by radioactive decays of r-process nuclei. Observations of kilonova associated with GW170817 provided unique opportunity to study the heavy element synthesis in the Universe. However, atomic data of r-process elements to decipher the light curves and spectral features of kilonova are not fully constructed yet. In this paper, we perform extended atomic calculations of neodymium (Nd, Z=60) to study the impact of accuracies in atomic calculations to the astrophysical opacities. By employing multiconfiguration Dirac-Hartree-Fock and relativistic configuration interaction methods, we calculate energy levels and transition data of electric dipole transitions for Nd II, Nd III, and Nd IV ions. Compared with previous calculations, our new results provide better agreement with the experimental data. The accuracy of energy levels was achieved in the present work 10 %, 3 % and 11 % for Nd II, Nd III and Nd IV, respectively, comparing with the NIST database. We confirm that the overall properties of the opacity are not significantly affected by the accuracies of the atomic calculations. The impact to the Planck mean opacity is up to a factor of 1.5, which affects the timescale of kilonova at most 20 %. However, we find that the wavelength dependent features in the opacity are affected by the accuracies of the calculations. We emphasize that accurate atomic calculations, in particular for low-lying energy levels, are important to provide predictions of kilonova light curves and spectra.

As well, the correlation effects affect the $4f^{2}5d \rightarrow 4f^{3}$ transitions by increasing transition probabilities by an order. Corona model has been used to estimate the contribution of various transitions to the emission in a low-density electron beam ion trap (EBIT) plasma. Modeling in 10--30 nm wavelength range produces lines which do not form emission bands and can be observed in EBIT plasma.

Correlation effects for the $4f^{2}$, $4d^{9}4f^{3}$, $4f5l$ ($l=0,...,4$), $4fng$ ($n=5, 6, 7$) configurations have been estimated by presenting configuration interaction strengths. It was determined that correlation effects are important for the $4f5s \rightarrow 4f^{2}$ transitions corresponding to weak electric octupole transitions in a single-configuration approach. Correlation effects influence the $4f5d \rightarrow 4f^{2}$ transitions by increasing transition probabilities by an order of magnitude. Identification of some lines observed in fusion plasma has been proposed. Spectra modeling shows strong increase of lines originating from the $4f5s \rightarrow 4f^{2}$ transitions. Other transitions from the $10-30$ nm region can be of interest for the EBIT plasma.

The obtained results show that the excitations to the high shells (n >= 9) increase cross sections of the indirect ionization process by a factor of 2 compared to the excitations to the lower shells (n <= 8). The excitations to the shells with orbital quantum number l = 4 give the largest contribution comparedwith the other orbital quantum numbers l. Radiative dam** reduces the cross sections of the indirect process approximately twofold in the case of the level-to-level calculations. Determined data show that the excitation-autoionization process contributes approximately 40% to the total ionization cross sections.

The EDM enhancement factors of Cn, here calculated for the first time, are about one order of magnitude larger than those of Hg. The exponential dependence of enhancement factors on atomic number $Z$ along group 12 of the periodic table was derived from the EDMs of the entire homolog series, $^{69}_{30}$Zn, $^{111}_{\phantom{1}48}$Cd, $^{199}_{\phantom{1}80}$Hg, $^{285}_{112}$Cn, and $^{482}_{162}$Uhb. These results show that superheavy elements with sufficiently large half-lives are good candidates for EDM searches.

Consequently, energy levels based on observation for the latter are obtained through extrapolation of wavelengths along the iso-electronic sequence for the 2s2.2p 2Po_{3/2} - 2s2p2 4P_{5/2} transition. In this paper, accurate theoretical excitation energies from a newly developed partitioned correlation function interaction (PCFI) method are reported for B I that include both relativistic effects in the Breit-Pauli approximation and a finite mass correction. Results are compared with extrapolated values from observed data. For B I our estimate of the excitation energy, 28959 +/- 5 cm^{-1}, is in better agreement with the values obtained by Edlén et al. Traditional multiconfiguration Hartree-Fock (MCHF) and configuration interaction (CI) methods are based on a single orthonormal orbital basis (OB). For atoms with complicated shell structures, a large OB is needed to saturate all the electron correlation effects. The large OB leads to massive configuration state function (CSF) expansions that are difficult to handle. We show that it is possible to relax the orthonormality restriction on the OB and break down the originally large calculations to a set of smaller ones that can be run in parallel. Each calculation determines a partitioned correlation function (PCF) that accounts for a specific correlation effect. The PCFs are built on optimally localized orbital sets and are added to a zero-order multireference (MR) function to form a total wave function. The mixing coefficients of the PCFs are fixed from a small generalized eigenvalue problem. The required matrices are computed using a biorthonormal transformation technique. The new method, called partitioned correlation function interaction (PCFI), converges rapidly and gives total energies that are lower than the ordinary ones (MCHF and CI). Considering Li I, we show that by dedicating a PCF to the single excitations from the core highly improves the convergence patterns of the hyperfine parameters. Collecting the optimized PCFs to correct the MR function, the variational degrees of freedom in the relative mixing coefficients of the CSFs building the PCFs are inhibited. These constraints lead to small off-sets in computed properties other than total energy, with respect to the correct values. By (partially) deconstraining the mixing coefficients one converges to the correct limits and keeps the important advantage in the convergence rates. Reducing ultimately each PCF to a single CSF with its own OB leads to a non-orthogonal CI approach. Various perspectives of the new method are given.

In the framework of the multiconfiguration Dirac-Hartree-Fock method, we investigate the transition properties of four excited states in the $2p^53s$ configuration of neutral neon. The electron correlation effects are taken into account systematically by using the active space approach. The effect of higher-order correlation on fine structures is shown. We also study the influence of the Breit interaction and find that it reduces the oscillator strength of the $^3P^o_1 - ^1S_0$ transition by 17%. It turns out that the inclusion of the Breit interaction is essential even for such a light atomic system. Our ab initio calculated line strengths, oscillator strengths and transition rates are compared with other theoretical values and experimental measurements. Good agreement is found except for the $^3P^o_2 - ^1S_0$ M2 transition for which discrepancies of around 15% between theories and experiments remain. In addition, the impact of hyperfine interactions on the lifetimes of the $^3P^o_0$ and $^3P^o_2$ metastable states is investigated for the $^{21}$Ne isotope (I=3/2). We find that hyperfine interactions reduce the lifetimes drastically. For the $^3P^o_0$ state the lifetime is decreased by a factor of 630.

We present investigation of the influence of cascade emission to the formation of spectra from plasma created by electron beam ion trap (EBIT) in electron trap** mode. It has been shown that cascade emission can play an important role in the formation of spectra from the EBIT plasma. Process of the cascade emission takes place when ion having cycloidal orbit leaves electron beam where coronal approximation is applicable. Thus both processes - excitation from ground or metastable levels and cascade emission - take part in the population of levels. Demonstration is based on the investigation of $W^{13+}$ spectra. The present investigation helps to resolve long-standing discrepancies; in particular, the present structure of $W^{13+}$ spectra is in good agreement with measurements on electron beam ion trap. Lines in the experimental spectra are identified as $4f^{13} 5s 5p \rightarrow 4f^{13} 5s^{2}$ and $4f^{12} 5s 5p^{2} \rightarrow 4f^{12} 5s^{2} 5p$ transitions from Dirac-Fock-Slater calculations.

Rev. Lett. 100 073201 (2008)]. To make use of this method to derive information about the nuclear charge distribution for other elements and isotopes, accurate electronic isotope shift parameters are required. In this work, we calculate and discuss the relativistic mass- and field-shift factors for the two $2s ^{2}S_{1/2} - 2p ^{2}P^{o}_{1/2,3/2}$ transitions along the lithium isoelectronic sequence. Based on the multiconfiguration Dirac-Hartree-Fock method, the electron correlation and the Breit interaction are taken into account systematically. The analysis of the isotope shifts for these two transitions along the isoelectronic sequence demonstrates the importance and competition between the mass shifts and the field shifts.

Multiconfiguration expansions frequently target valence correlation and correlation between valence electrons and the outermost core electrons. Correlation within the core is often neglected. A large orbital basis is needed to saturate both the valence and core-valence correlation effects. This in turn leads to huge numbers of CSFs, many of which are unimportant. To avoid the problems inherent to the use of a single common orthonormal orbital basis for all correlation effects in the MCHF method, we propose to optimize independent MCHF pair-correlation functions (PCFs), bringing their own orthonormal one-electron basis. Each PCF is generated by allowing single- and double- excitations from a multireference (MR) function. This computational scheme has the advantage of using targeted and optimally localized orbital sets for each PCF. These pair-correlation functions are coupled together and with each component of the MR space through a low dimension generalized eigenvalue problem. Nonorthogonal orbital sets being involved, the interaction and overlap matrices are built using biorthonormal transformation of the coupled basis sets followed by a counter-transformation of the PCF expansions.
Applied to the ground state of beryllium, the new method gives total energies that are lower than the ones from traditional CAS-MCHF calculations using large orbital active sets. It is fair to say that we now have the possibility to account for, in a balanced way, correlation deep down in the atomic core in variational calculations.

It is first stressed that the density function is not a priori spherically symmetric in the general open shell case. Ways of building it as a spherical symmetric function are discussed, from which the radial electron density function emerges. This function is written in second quantized coupled tensorial form for exploring the atomic spherical symmetry. The calculation of its expectation value is performed using the angular momentum theory in orbital, spin, and quasispin spaces, adopting a generalized graphical technique. Today, relativistic calculations are known to provide a very successful means in the study of open-shell atoms and ions. But although accurate atomic data are obtained from these computations, they are traditionally carried out in jj-coupling and, hence, do often not allow for a simple LSJ classification of the atomic levels as needed by experiment. In fact, this lack of providing a proper spectroscopic notation from relativistic structure calculations has recently hampered not only the spectroscopy of medium and heavy elements, but also the interpretation and analysis of inner-shell processes, for which the occurrence of additional vacancies usually leads to a very detailed fine structure.
Therefore, in order to facilitate the classification of atomic levels from such computations, here we present a program (within the Ratip environment) which help transform the atomic wave functions from jj-coupled multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock computations into a LS-coupled representation. Beside of a proper LSJ assignment to the atomic levels, the program also supports the full transformation of the wave functions if required for (nonrelativistic) computations.

Transformation matrices between different coupling schemes are required, if a reliable classification of the level structure is to be obtained for open-shell atoms and ions. While, for instance, relativistic computations are traditionally carried out in jj-coupling, a LSJ coupling notation often occurs much more appropriate for classifying the valence-shell structure of atoms. Apart from the (known) transformation of single open shells, however, further demand on proper transformation coefficients has recently arose from the study of open d- and f-shell elements, the analysis of multiple--excited levels, or the investigation on inner-shell phenomena. Therefore, in order to facilitate a simple access to LS <-> jj transformation matrices, here we present an extension to the Racah program for the set-up and the transformation of symmetry-adapted functions. A flexible notation is introduced for defining and for manipulating open-shell configurations at different level of complexity which can be extended also to other coupling schemes and, hence, may help determine an optimum classification of atomic levels and processes in the future.

The program is based on a recently developed formalism [G.Gaigalas, Z.Rudzikas, and C.F.Fischer, J. Phys. The new module uses a different decomposition of the coefficients as sums of products of pure angular momentum coefficients, which depend only on the tensor rank of the interaction but not on its details, with effective interaction strengths of specific interactions. This saves memory and reduces the computational cost of big calculations signficantly.

A program RCFP will be presented for calculating standard quantities in the decomposition of many-electron matrix elements in atomic structure theory. The list of quantities wich are supported by the present program includes the coefficients of fractional parentage, the reduced coefficients of fractional parentage, the reduced matrix elements of the unit operator T^{(k)} as well as the completely reduced matrix elements of the operator W^{(k_jk_q)} in jj-coupling. These quantities are now available for all subshells (nj) with j \leq 9/2 including partially filled 9/2-shells. Our program is based on a recently developed new approach on the spin-angular integration which combines second quantization and quasispin methods with the theory of angular momentum in order to obtain a more efficient evaluation of many-electron matrix elements. An underlying Fortran 90/95 module can directly be used also in (other) atomic structure codes to accelerate the computation for open-shell atoms and ions.

A general method is described for finding algebraic expressions for matrix elements of any one- and two-particle operator for an arbitrary number of subshells in an atomic configuration, requiring neither coefficients of fractional parentage nor unit tensors. It is based on the combination of second quantization in the coupled tensorial form, angular momentum theory in three spaces (orbital, spin and quasispin), and a generalized graphical technique. The latter allows us to calculate graphically the irreducible tensorial products of the second quantization operators and their commutators, and to formulate additional rules for operations with diagrams. The additional rules allow us to find graphically the normal form of the complicated tensorial products of the operators. All matrix elements (diagonal and non-diagonal with respect to configurations) differ only by the values of the projections of the quasispin momenta of separate shells and are expressed in terms of completely reduced matrix elements (in all three spaces) of the second quantization operators. As a result, it allows us to use standard quantities uniformly for both diagona and off-diagonal matrix elements.

Traditional theory of many-electron atoms and ions is based on the coefficients of fractional parentage and matrix elements of tensorial operators, composed of unit tensors. Then the calculation of spin-angular coefficients of radial integrals appearing in the expressions of matrix elements of arbitrary physical operators of atomic quantities has two main disadvantages: (i) The numerical codes for the calculation of spin-angular coefficients are usually very time-consuming; (ii) f-shells are often omitted from programs for matrix element calculation since the tables for their coefficients of fractional parentage are very extensive. The authors suppose that a series of difficulties persisting in the traditional approach to the calculation of spin-angular parts of matrix elements could be avoided by using this secondly quantized methodology, based on angular momentum theory, on the concept of the irreducible tensorial sets, on a generalized graphical method, on quasispin and on the reduced coefficients of fractional parentage.

The tensorial form of the spin-other-orbit interaction operator in the formalism of second quantization is presented. Such an expression is needed to calculate both diagonal and off-diagonal matrix elements according to an approach, based on a combination of second quantization in the coupled tensorial form, angular momentum theory in three spaces (orbital, spin and quasispin), and a generalized graphical technique. One of the basic features of this approach is the use of tables of standard quantities, without which the process of obtaining matrix elements of spin-other-orbit interaction operator between any electron configurations is much more complicated. Some special cases are shown for which the tensorial structure of the spin-other-orbit interaction operator reduces to an unusually simple form.

These methods are compared in various aspects, and the advantages or shortcomings of each particular method are discussed. Efficient method to find the abovementioned quantities in LS coupling is presented, based on the use of symmetry properties of operators and matrix elements in three spaces (orbital, spin and quasispin), second quantization in coupled tensorial form, graphical technique and Wick's theorem. This allows to efficiently account for correlation effects practically for any atom and ion of periodical table.

Transformation matrices of the weights of the atomic wave functions in jj coupling to the relevant weights of LS coupling are considered for a shell of equivalent electrons. Their use allows one to preserve main part of relativistic effects but to classify the energy levels of an atom or an ion considered with the help of a set of quantum numbers of LS coupling scheme. Having in mind that the numerical values of the abovementioned transformation matrix (LS-jj) may be generally obtained in a very time consuming recurrent way, the analytical expressions of these matrices for a number of special cases of electronic configurations are presented.
