Measurements of circular polarization of $γ$-ray emitted from neutron capture reactions provide valuable information for nuclear physics studies. The spin and parity of excited states can be determined by measuring the circular polarization from polarized neutron capture reactions. Furthermore, the $γ$-ray circular polarization in a neutron capture resonance is crucial for studying the enhancement effect of parity nonconservation in compound nuclei. The $γ$-ray circular polarization can be measured using a polarimeter based on magnetic Compton scattering. A polarimeter was constructed, and its performance indicators were evaluated using a circularly polarized $γ$-ray beam. Furthermore, as a demonstration, the $γ$-ray circular polarization was measured in $^{32}$S($\vec{\textrm{n}}$,$γ$)$^{33}$S reactions with polarized neutrons.

When moving a piano or dancing tango with a partner, how should I control my arm muscles to best feel their movements and follow or guide them smoothly? Here we observe how physically connected pairs tracking a moving target with the arm modify muscle coactivation with their visual acuity and the partners performance. They coactivate muscles to stiffen the arm when the partners performance is worse, and relax with blurry visual feedback. Computational modelling show that this adaptive sensing property cannot be explained by movement error minimization proposed in earlier models. Instead, individuals skilfully control the arms stiffness to guide it on the planned motion while minimizing effort and extracting useful haptic information from the partners movement. The central nervous system regulates muscles' activation to guide motion with accurate task information from vision and haptics while minimizing the metabolic cost.

Aerosol effects on micro-/macro-physical properties of marine stratocumulus clouds over the Western North Atlantic Ocean (WNAO) are investigated using in-situ measurements and large-eddy simulations (LES) for two cold air outbreak (CAO) cases (February 28 and March 1, 2020) during the Aerosol Cloud meTeorology Interactions oVer the western ATlantic Experiment (ACTIVATE). The LES is able to reproduce the vertical profiles of liquid water content (LWC), effective radius r_eff and the cloud droplet number concentration Nc from fast cloud droplet probe (FCDP) in-situ measurements for both cases. Furthermore, we show that aerosols affect cloud properties (Nc, r_eff, and LWC) via the prescribed bulk hygroscopicity of aerosols and aerosol size distributions characteristics. Nc, r_eff, and liquid water path (LWP) are positively correlated to the bulk hygroscopicity of aerosols and aerosol number concentration (Na) while cloud fractional cover (CFC) is insensitive to the bulk hygroscopicity of aerosols and aerosol size distributions for the two cases. The changes to aerosol size distribution (number concentration, width, and the geometrical diameter) allow us to disentangle aerosol effects on cloud properties from the meteorological effects. We also use the LES results to evaluate cloud properties from two reanalysis products, ERA5 and MERRA-2. Comparing to LES, the ERA5 reanalysis is able to capture the time evolution of LWP and total cloud coverage within the study domain during both CAO cases while MERRA-2 underestimates them.

Large-eddy simulation (LES) is able to capture key boundary-layer (BL) turbulence and cloud processes. Yet, large-scale forcing and surface turbulent fluxes of sensible and latent heat are often poorly prescribed for LES simulations. We derive these quantities from measurements and reanalysis obtained for two cold air outbreak (CAO) events during Phase I of the Aerosol Cloud meTeorology Interactions oVer the western ATlantic Experiment (ACTIVATE) in February-March 2020. We study the two contrasting CAO cases by performing LES and test the sensitivity of BL structure and clouds to large-scale forcings and turbulent heat fluxes. Profiles of atmospheric state and large-scale divergence and surface turbulent heat fluxes obtained from the reanalysis data ERA5 agree reasonably well with those derived from ACTIVATE field measurements for both cases at the sampling time and location. Therefore, we adopt the time evolving heat fluxes, wind and advective tendencies profiles from ERA5 reanalysis data to drive the LES. We find that large-scale thermodynamic advective tendencies and wind relaxations are important for the LES to capture the evolving observed BL meteorological states characterized by the hourly ERA5 reanalysis data and validated by the observations. We show that the divergence (or vertical velocity) is important in regulating the BL growth driven by surface heat fluxes in LES simulations. The evolution of liquid water path is largely affected by the evolution of surface heat fluxes. The liquid water path simulated in LES agrees reasonably well with the ACTIVATE measurements. This study paves the path to investigate aerosol-cloud-meteorology interactions using LES informed and evaluated by ACTIVATE field measurements.

Atomic nuclei can be spontaneously deformed into non-spherical shapes as many-nucleon systems. We discuss to what extent a similar deformation takes place in many-electron systems. To this end, we employ several many-body methods, such as the unrestricted Hartree-Fock method, post-Hartree-Fock methods, and the density functional theory, to compute the electron density distribution in atoms. We show that the electron density distribution of open-shell atoms is deformed due solely to the single-particle valence orbitals, while the core part remains spherical. This is in contrast to atomic nuclei, which can be deformed collectively. We qualitatively discuss the origin for this apparent difference between atoms and nuclei by estimating the energy change due to deformation. We find that nature of the interaction plays an essential role for the collective deformation.

A $^3$He gas-filling station was constructed at J-PARC, and several $^3$He cells with long spin relaxation times have been fabricated using the gas-filling station. A laboratory has been prepared in the MLF beam hall for polarizing $^3$He cells, and compact pum** systems with laser powers of 30~W and 110~W, which can be installed onto a neutron beamline, have been developed. A $^3$He polarization of 85% was achieved at a neutron beamline by using the pum** system with the 110~W laser. Recently, the first user experiment utilizing the $^3$He spin filter was conducted, and there have been several more since then. The development and utilization of $^3$He spin filters at MLF of J-PARC are reported.

This article reviews theoretical and experimental advances in Efimov physics, an array of quantum few-body and many-body phenomena arising for particles interacting via short-range resonant interactions, that is based on the appearance of a scale-invariant three-body attraction theoretically discovered by Vitaly Efimov in 1970. This three-body effect was originally proposed to explain the binding of nuclei such as the triton and the Hoyle state of carbon-12, and later considered as a simple explanation for the existence of some halo nuclei. It was subsequently evidenced in trapped ultra-cold atomic clouds and in diffracted molecular beams of gaseous helium. These experiments revealed that the previously undetermined three-body parameter introduced in the Efimov theory to stabilise the three-body attraction typically scales with the range of atomic interactions. The few- and many-body consequences of the Efimov attraction have been since investigated theoretically, and are expected to be observed in a broader spectrum of physical systems.

We consider heavy particles immersed in a Fermi sea of light fermions, and study the interaction between the heavy particles induced by the surrounding light fermions. With the Born-Oppenheimer method, we analytically show that the induced interaction between N heavy particles vanishes for any N in the limit of high light-fermion density. The induced interaction vanishes even in the unitarity regime. This suggests that the formation of N-body bound states associated with the Efimov effect is suppressed in the presence of the dense Fermi sea. We ascribe the vanishing induced interaction to the screening effect in the neutral Fermi system.

We address the microscopic origin of the universal three-body parameter that fixes the spectrum of three-atom systems in the Efimov regime. We identify it with the van der Waals two-body correlation, which causes the three-atom system to deform when the three atoms come within the distance of the van der Waals length, effectively preventing them from coming closer due to the kinetic-energy cost associated with this three-body deformation. This deformation mechanism explains the universal ratio of the scattering length at the triatomic resonance to the van der Waals length observed in several experiments and confirmed by numerical calculations.

For a system of two identical fermions and one distinguishable particle interacting via a short-range potential with a large s-wave scattering length, the Efimov trimers and Kartavtsev-Malykh trimers exist in different regimes of the mass ratio. The Efimov trimers are known to exhibit a discrete scaling invariance, while the Kartavtsev-Malykh trimers feature a continuous scaling invariance. We point out that a third type of trimers, "crossover trimers", exist universally regardless of short-range details of the potential. These crossover trimers have neither the discrete nor continuous scaling invariance. We show that the crossover trimers continuously connect the discrete and continuous scaling regimes as the mass ratio and the scattering length are varied. We identify the regions for the Kartavtsev-Malykh trimers, Efimov trimers, crossover trimers, and non-universal trimers as a function of the mass ratio and the s-wave scattering length by investigating the scaling property and model-independence of the trimers.
