The development of nanoscale nonlinear elements in photonic integrated circuits is hindered by the physical limits to the nonlinear optical response of dielectrics, which requires that the interacting waves propagate in transparent volumes for distances much longer than their wavelength. Here we present experimental evidence that optical nonlinearities in doped semiconductors are due to free-electron and their efficiency could exceed by several orders of magnitude that of conventional dielectric nonlinearities. Our experimental findings are supported by comprehensive computational results based on the hydrodynamic modeling, which naturally includes nonlocal effects, of the free-electron dynamics in heavily doped semiconductors. By studying third-harmonic generation from plasmonic nanoantenna arrays made out of heavily n-doped InGaAs with increasing levels of free-carrier density, we discriminate between hydrodynamic and dielectric nonlinearities. As a result, the value of maximum nonlinear efficiency as well as its spectral location can now be controlled by tuning the do** level. Having employed the common material platform InGaAs/InP that supports integrated waveguides, our findings pave the way for future exploitation of plasmonic nonlinearities in all-semiconductor photonic integrated circuits.

Active matter systems evade the constraints of thermal equilibrium, leading to the emergence of intriguing collective behavior. A paradigmatic example is given by motor-filament mixtures, where the motion of motor proteins drives alignment and sliding interactions between filaments and their self-organization into macroscopic structures. After defining a microscopic model for these systems, we derive continuum equations, exhibiting the formation of active supramolecular assemblies such as micelles, bilayers and foams. The transition between these structures is driven by a branching instability, which destabilizes the orientational order within the micelles, leading to the growth of bilayers at high microtubule densities. Additionally, we identify a fingering instability, modulating the shape of the micelle interface at high motor densities. We study the role of various mechanisms in these two instabilities, such as contractility, active splay, and anchoring, allowing for generalization beyond the system considered here.

Abstract:
We propose surface modulation of the equilibrium charge density as a technique to control and enhance, via an external static potential, the free electron nonlinear response of heavily doped semiconductors. Within a hydrodynamic perturbative approach, we predict a two order of magnitude boost of free electron third-harmonic generation.

Plasmonic waveguides provide an integrated platform to develop efficient nanoscale ultrafast photonic devices. Theoretical models that describe nonlinear optical phenomena in plasmonic waveguides, usually, only incorporate bulk nonlinearities, while nonlinearities that arise from metallic constituents remained unexplored. In this work, we present a method that enables a generalized treatment of the nonlinearities present in plasmonic waveguides and use it to calculate second-harmonic generation from free electrons through a hydrodynamic nonlocal description. As a general application of our method we also consider nonlinearities arising from the quantum hydrodynamic theory with electron spill-out. Our results may find applicability in design and analysis of integrated photonic platforms for nonlinear optics incorporating wide variety of nonlinear materials such as heavily doped semiconductors for mid-infrared applications.

Heavily doped semiconductors have emerged as tunable low-loss plasmonic materials at mid-infrared frequencies. In this article we investigate nonlinear optical phenomena associated with high concentration of free electrons. We use a hydrodynamic description to study free electron dynamics in heavily doped semiconductors up to third-order terms, which are usually negligible for noble metals. We find that cascaded third-harmonic generation due to second-harmonic signals can be as strong as direct third-harmonic generation contributions even when the second-harmonic generation efficiency is zero. Moreover, we show that when coupled with plasmonic enhancement free electron nonlinearities could be up to two orders of magnitude larger than conventional semiconductor nonlinearities. Our study might open a new route for nonlinear optical integrated devices at mid-infrared frequencies.

The challenge of nowcasting and forecasting the effect of natural disasters (e.g. earthquakes, floods, hurricanes) on assets, people and society is of primary importance for assessing the ability of such systems to recover from extreme events. Traditional disaster recovery estimates, such as surveys and interviews, are usually costly, time consuming and do not scale. Here we present a methodology to indirectly estimate the post-emergency recovery status ('downtime') of small businesses in urban areas looking at their online posting activity on social media. Analysing the time series of posts before and after an event, we quantify the downtime of small businesses for three natural disasters occurred in Nepal, Puerto Rico and Mexico. A convenient and reliable method for nowcasting the post-emergency recovery status of economic activities could help local governments and decision makers to better target their interventions and distribute the available resources more effectively.

The formation and evolution of coherent structures in a low-energy electron beam produced in a Malmberg-Penning trap is investigated by means of CCD diagnostics. The electrons are emitted from a thermionic cathode and their energy is controlled by an acceleration grid. By varying the spatial distribution of the energy of emitted electrons, different space charge effects are observed, as, e. g., a sharp or a gradual transition to a space charge dominated regime. The variation of the coherent structures along the beam is studied by varying the electron density or/and the value of the confined magnetic field. The observed processes are interpreted using a tridimensional particle-in-cell code which solves the Vlasov-Poisson system in zeroth order drift approximation.
