We study the impact of top SiO2 interlayer thickness on the memory window (MW) of Si channel ferroelectric field-effect transistor (FeFET) with TiN/SiO2/Hf0.5Zr0.5O2/SiOx/Si (MIFIS) gate structure. We find that the MW increases with the increasing thickness of the top SiO2 interlayer, and such an increase exhibits a two-stage linear dependence. The physical origin is the presence of the different interfacial charges trapped at the top SiO2/Hf0.5Zr0.5O2 interface. Moreover, we investigate the dependence of endurance characteristics on initial MW. We find that the endurance characteristic degrades with increasing the initial MW. By inserting a 3.4 nm SiO2 dielectric interlayer between the gate metal TiN and the ferroelectric Hf0.5Zr0.5O2, we achieve a MW of 6.3 V and retention over 10 years. Our work is helpful in the device design of FeFET.

For electronic systems with multi-reference (MR) character, Kohn-Sham density functional theory (KS-DFT) with the conventional exchange-correlation (xc) energy functionals can lead to incorrect spin densities and related properties. For example, for H2 dissociation, the spin-restricted and spin-unrestricted solutions obtained with the same xc energy functional in KS-DFT can be distinctly different, yielding the unphysical spin-symmetry breaking effects in the spin-unrestricted solutions. Recently, thermally-assisted-occupation density functional theory (TAO-DFT) has been shown to resolve the aforementioned spin-symmetry breaking, when the fictitious temperature is properly chosen. In this work, a response theory based on TAO-DFT is developed to demonstrate that TAO-DFT with a sufficiently large fictitious temperature can always resolve the unphysical spin-symmetry breaking in MR systems. To further support this, TAO-DFT calculations with various fictitious temperatures are performed for the dissociation of H2, N2, He2, and Ne2 as well as the twisted ethylene.

Graphene-silicon Schottky junction (GSJ) which has the potential for large-scale manufacturing and integration can bring new opportunities to Schottky solar cells for photovoltaic (PV) power conversion. However, the essential power conversion limitation for these devices lies in the small open-circuit voltage ($V_{oc}$), which depends on the Schottky barrier height (SBH). In this study, we introduce an electromechanical method based on the flexoelectric effect to enhance the PV efficiency in GSJ. By atomic force microscope (AFM) tip-based indentation and in situ current measurement, the current-voltage (I-V) responses under flexoelectric strain gradient are obtained. The $V_{oc}$ is observed to increase for up to 20$\%$, leading to an evident improvement of the power conversion efficiency. Our studies suggest that strain gradient may offer unprecedented opportunities for the development of GSJ based flexo-photovoltaic applications.

Two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors are promising channel materials for continued downscaling of complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) logic circuits. However, their full potential continues to be limited by a lack of scalable high-k dielectrics that can achieve atomically smooth interfaces, small equivalent oxide thicknesses (EOT), excellent gate control, and low leakage currents. Here, we report liquid metal printed ultrathin and scalable Ga2O3 dielectric for 2D electronics and electro-optical devices. We directly visualize the atomically smooth Ga2O3/WS2 interfaces enabled by the conformal nature of liquid metal printing. We demonstrate atomic layer deposition compatibility with high-k Ga2O3/HfO2 top-gate dielectric stacks on chemical vapour deposition grown monolayer WS2, achieving EOTs of ~1 nm and subthreshold swings down to 84.9 mV/dec. Gate leakage currents are well within requirements for ultra-scaled low-power logic circuits. Our results show that liquid metal printed oxides can bridge a crucial gap in scalable dielectric integration of 2D materials for next-generation nano-electronics.

The gate defect of the ferroelectric HfO$_2$-based Si field-effect transistor (Si FeFET) plays a dominant role in its reliability issue. The first-principles calculations are an effective method for the atomic-scale understanding of gate defects. However, the first-principles study on the defects of FeFET gate stacks, i.e., metal/orthorhombic-Hf$_{0.5}$Zr$_{0.5}$O$_2$/SiO$_2$/Si structure, has not been reported so far. The key challenge is the construction of metal/orthorhombic-Hf$_{0.5}$Zr$_{0.5}$O$_2$/SiO$_2$/Si gate stack models. Here, we use the Hf$_{0.5}$Zr$_{0.5}$O$_2$(130) high-index crystal face as the orthorhombic ferroelectric layer and construct a robust atomic structure of the orthorhombic-Hf$_{0.5}$Zr$_{0.5}$O$_2$/SiO$_2$/Si gate stack without any gap states. Its high structural stability is ascribed to the insulated interface. The calculated band offsets show that this gate structure is of the type-I band alignment. Furthermore, the formation energies and charge transition levels (CTLs) of defects reveal that the oxygen vacancy defects are more favorable to form compared with other defects such as oxygen interstitial and Hf/Zr vacancy, and their CTLs are mainly localized near the Si conduction band minimum and valence band maximum, in agreement with the reported experimental results. The oxygen vacancy defects are responsible for charge trap**/de-trap** behavior in Si FeFET. This work provides an insight into gate defects and paves the way to carry out the first-principles study of ferroelectric HfO$_2$-based Si FeFET.

We study the impact of different interlayers and ferroelectric materials on charge trap** during the endurance fatigue of Si FeFET with TiN/HfxZr1-xO2/interlayer/Si (MFIS) gate stack. We have fabricated FeFET devices with different interlayers (SiO2 or SiON) and HfxZr1-xO2 materials (x=0.75, 0.6, 0.5), and directly extracted the charge trap** during endurance fatigue. We find that: 1) The introduction of the N element in the interlayer suppresses charge trap** and defect generation, and improves the endurance characteristics. 2) As the spontaneous polarization (Ps) of the HfxZr1-xO2 decreases from 25.9 μC/cm2 (Hf0.5Zr0.5O2) to 20.3 μC/cm2 (Hf0.6Zr0.4O2), the charge trap** behavior decreases, resulting in the slow degradation rate of memory window (MW) during program/erase cycling; in addition, when the Ps further decreases to 8.1 μC/cm2 (Hf0.75Zr0.25O2), the initial MW nearly disappears (only ~0.02 V). Thus, the reduction of Ps could improve endurance characteristics. On the contract, it can also reduce the MW. Our work helps design the MFIS gate stack to improve endurance characteristics.

We investigate the charge trap** during endurance fatigue of FeFET with TiN/Hf0.5Zr0.5O2/SiO2/Si (MFIS) gate structure. We propose a method of experimentally extracting the number of trapped charges during the memory operation, by measuring the charges in the metal gate and Si substrate. We verify that the amount of trapped charges increases during the endurance fatigue process. This is the first time that the trapped charges are directly experimentally extracted and verified to increase during endurance fatigue. Moreover, we model the interplay between the trapped charges and ferroelectric polarization switching during endurance fatigue. Through the consistency of experimental results and simulated data, we demonstrate that as the memory window decreases: 1) The ferroelectric characteristic of Hf0.5Zr0.5O2 is not degraded. 2) The trap density in the upper bandgap of the gate stacks increases. 3) The reason for memory window decrease is increased trapped electrons after program operation but not related to hole trap**/de-trap**. Our work is helpful to study the charge trap** behavior of FeFET and the related endurance fatigue process.

This paper investigates the thermodynamic driving force of transient negative capacitance (NC) in the series circuit of the resistor and ferroelectric capacitor (R-FEC). We find that the widely used Landau-Khalatnikov (L-K) theory, that is, the minimum of the Gibbs free energy, is inapplicable to explain the transient NC. The thermodynamic driving force of the transient NC phenomenon is the minimum of the difference between the elastic Gibbs free energy and the electric polarization work. The appearance of the transient NC phenomenon is not due to the widely accepted view that the ferroelectric polarization goes through the negative curvature region of elastic Gibbs free energy landscape (Ga). Instead, the transient NC phenomenon appears when the energy barrier of Ga disappears. The transient NC is dependent on both the intrinsic ferroelectric material parameters and extrinsic factors in the R-FEC circuit.

The time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) has been broadly used to investigate the excited-state properties of various molecular systems. However, the current TDDFT heavily relies on outcomes from the corresponding ground-state density functional theory (DFT) calculations which may be prone to errors due to the lack of proper treatment in the non-dynamical correlation effects. Recently, thermally-assisted-occupation density functional theory (TAO-DFT) [J.-D. Chai, \textit{J. Chem. Phys.} \textbf{136}, 154104 (2012)], a DFT with fractional orbital occupations, was proposed, explicitly incorporating the non-dynamical correlation effects in the ground-state calculations with low computational complexity. In this work, we develop time-dependent (TD) TAO-DFT, which is a time-dependent, linear-response theory for excited states within the framework of TAO-DFT. With tests on the excited states of H$_{2}$, the first triplet excited state ($1^3Σ_u^+$) was described well, with non-imaginary excitation energies. TDTAO-DFT also yields zero singlet-triplet gap in the dissociation limit, for the ground singlet ($1^1Σ_g^+$) and the first triplet state ($1^3Σ_u^+$). In addition, as compared to traditional TDDFT, the overall excited-state potential energy surfaces obtained from TDTAO-DFT are generally improved and better agree with results from the equation-of-motion coupled-cluster singles and doubles (EOM-CCSD).

A combined density and first-order reduced-density-matrix (1RDM) functional method is proposed for the calculation of potential energy curves (PECs) of molecular multibond dissociation. Its 1RDM functional part, a pair density functional, efficiently approximates the ab initio pair density of the complete active space self-consistent-field (CASSCF) method. The corresponding approximate on top pair density Π is employed to correct for double counting a correlation functional of density functional theory (DFT). The proposed ELS-DMΠDFT method with the extended Löwdin-Shull (ELS) 1RDM functional with dispersion and multibond (DM) corrections augmented with the ΠDFT functional closely reproduces PECs of multibond dissociation in the paradigmatic N_2 , H_2O, and H_2CO molecules calculated with the recently proposed CASΠDFT (CASSCF augmented with a Π based scaled DFT correlation correction) method. Furthermore, with the additional M-correction, ELS-DMΠDFT+M reproduces well the benchmark PEC of the N_2 molecule by Lie and Clementi.

A two-orbital two-electron diatomic model resembling LiH is used to investigate the differences between the exact Löwdin-Shull and approximate Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov and Baerends-Buijse density matrix functionals in the medium- to long-distance dissociation region. In case of homolytic dissociation (one electron on each atom), the approximate functionals fail to generate the correct energy due to a compromise between the Hartree-Fock component (which favors partial charge transfer) and the strong correlation component (which hampers charge transfer). The exact functional is able to generate the physically correct answer by enforcing the equi-charge distribution of the bonding and antibonding orbitals. Besides, the approximate functionals also have issues in correctly describing heterolytic dissociation (two electrons on one atom) due to the strong correlation component hampering charge transfer. In this work, we propose a new scheme in which the homolytic dissociation problem for approximate functionals is avoided by adding a Lagrange multiplier that enforces equi-charge distribution of the bonding and antibonding orbitals. The symmety based nature of the findings implies that they are most likely transferable to other cases in which one uses an approximate one-particle method in conjunction with a symmetrical particle-hole correction factor.

Triple-GEM detectors are a well known technology in high energy physics. In order to have a complete understanding of their behavior, in parallel with on beam testing, a Monte Carlo code has to be developed to simulate their response to the passage of particles. The software must take into account all the physical processes involved from the primary ionization up to the signal formation, e.g. the avalanche multiplication and the effect of the diffusion on the electrons. In the case of gas detectors, existing software such as Garfield already perform a very detailed simulation but are CPU time consuming. A description of a reliable but faster simulation is presented here: it uses a parametric description of the variables of interest obtained by suitable preliminary Garfield simulations and tuned to the test beam data. It can reproduce the real values of the charge measured by the strip, needed to reconstruct the position with the Charge Centroid method. In addition, particular attention was put to the simulation of the timing information, which permits to apply also the micro-Time Projection Chamber position reconstruction, for the first time on a triple-GEM. A comparison between simulation and experimental values of some sentinel variables in different conditions of magnetic field, high voltage settings and incident angle will be shown.

The time-of-arrival is provided by a set of low-power TDCs, based on analogue interpolation techniques, while the charge measurement is obtained either from the Time-over-Threshold information or with a sample-and-hold circuit. The ASIC has been fabricated in a 110 nm CMOS technology and designed to operate with a 1.2 V power supply, an input capacitance of about 100 pF, an input dynamic range between 3 and 50 fC, a power consumption of about 12 mW/channel and a sustained event rate of 60 kHz/channel. The design and test results of TIGER first prototype are presented showing its full functionality.

In this article we describe the commissioning and a first analysis of the the beam test performance of a small prototype of a highly granular silicon tungsten calorimeter. The prototype features detector elements with a channel number similar to that envisaged for e.g. the ILD Detector of the International Linear Collider (ILC). The analysis demonstrates the capability of the detector to record signals as low as 0.5 MIP. Further, no loss of performance has been observed when operating the detector in a high magnetic field.

The Bei**g Electron Spectrometer III (BESIII) is a multipurpose detector that collects data provided by the collision in the Bei**g Electron Positron Collider II (BEPCII), hosted at the Institute of High Energy Physics of Bei**g. Since the beginning of its operation, BESIII has collected the world largest sample of J/ψ and ψ(2s). Due to the increase of the luminosity up to its nominal value of 10^33 cm-2 s-1 and aging effect, the MDC decreases its efficiency in the first layers up to 35% with respect to the value in 2014. Since BESIII has to take data up to 2022 with the chance to continue up to 2027, the Italian collaboration proposed to replace the inner part of the MDC with three independent layers of Cylindrical triple-GEM (CGEM). The CGEM-IT project will deploy several new features and innovation with respect the other current GEM based detector: the μTPC and analog readout, with time and charge measurements will allow to reach the 130 μm spatial resolution in 1 T magnetic field requested by the BESIII collaboration. In this proceeding, an update of the status of the project will be presented, with a particular focus on the results with planar and cylindrical prototypes with test beams data. These results are beyond the state of the art for GEM technology in magnetic field.

Gas detectors are one of the pillars of the research in fundamental physics. Since many years, a new concept of detectors, the Micro Pattern Gas Detectors, allows to overcome many of the problems of other types of commonly used detectors, as drift chambers and microstrips, reducing the discharge rate and increasing the radiation tolerance. Among these, one of the most commonly used is the Gas Electron Multiplier. Commonly deployed as fast timing detectors and triggers, due to their fast response, high rate capability and high radiation hardness, they can also be used as trackers. The center of gravity readout technique allows to overcome the limit of the digital pads, whose spatial resolution is constrained by the pitch size. The presence of a high external magnetic field can distort the electronic cloud and affect the spatial resolution. The micro-TPC reconstruction method allows to reconstruct the three dimensional particle position as in a traditional Time Projection Chamber, but within a drift gap of a few millimeters. This method brings these detectors into a new perspective for what concerns the spatial resolution in strong magnetic field. In this report, the basis of this new technique will be shown and it will be compared to the traditional center of gravity. The results of a series of test beam performed with 10 x 10 cm2 planar prototypes in magnetic field will also be presented. This is one of the first implementations of this technique for GEM detectors in magnetic field and allows to reach unprecedented performance for gas detectors, up to a limit of 120 micron at 1T, one of the world's best results for MPGDs in strong magnetic field. The micro-TPC reconstruction has been recently tested at very high rates in a test beam at the MAMI facility; preliminary results of the test will be presented.

A cylindrical GEM tracker is under construction in order to replace and improve the inner tracking system of the BESIII experiment. Tests with planar chamber prototypes were carried out on the H4 beam line of SPS (CERN) with muons of 150 GeV/c momentum, to evaluate the efficiency and resolution under different working conditions. The obtained efficiency was in the 96 - 98% range. Two complementary algorithms for the position determination were developed: the charge centroid and the micro-TPC methods. With the former, resolutions <100 micron and <200 micron were achieved without and with magnetic field, respectively. The micro-TPC improved these results. By the end of 2016, the first cylindrical prototype was tested on the same beam line. It showed optimal stability under different settings. The comparison of its performance with respect to the planar chambers is ongoing. Here, the results of the planar prototype tests will be addressed.

The Cylindrical GEM-Inner Tracker (CGEM-IT) is the upgrade of the internal tracking system of the BESIII experiment. It consists of three layers of cylindrically-shaped triple GEMs, with important innovations with respect to the existing GEM detectors, in order to achieve the best performance with the lowest material budget. It will be the first cylindrical GEM running with analog readout inside a 1T magnetic field. The simultaneous measurement of both the deposited charge and the signal time will permit to use a combination of two algorithms to evaluate the spatial position of the charged tracks inside the CGEM-IT: the charge centroid and the micro time projection chamber modes. They are complementary and can cope with the asymmetry of the electron avalanche when running in magnetic field and with non-orthogonal incident tracks. To evaluate the behavior under different working settings, both planar chambers and the first cylindrical prototype have been tested during various test beams at CERN with 150 GeV/c muons and pions. This paper reports the results obtained with the two reconstruction methods and a comparison between the planar and cylindrical chambers.

POLAR is a compact wide-field space-borne detector for precise measurements of the linear polarisation of hard X-rays emitted by transient sources in the energy range from 50 keV to 500 keV. It consists of a 40$\times$40 array of plastic scintillator bars used as a detection material. The bars are grouped in 25 detector modules. The energy range sensitivity of POLAR is optimized to match with the prompt emission photons from the gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). Polarization measurements of the prompt emission would probe source geometries, emission mechanisms and magnetic structures in GRB jets. The instrument can also detect hard X-rays from solar flares and be used for precise measurement of their polarisation. POLAR was launched into a low Earth orbit on-board the Chinese space-lab TG-2 on September 15th, 2016. To achieve high accuracies in polarisation measurements it is essential to assure both before and during the flight a precise energy calibration. Such calibrations are performed with four low activity $^{22}$Na radioactive sources placed inside the instrument. Energy conversion factors are related to Compton edge positions from the collinear annihilation photons from the sources. This paper presents main principles of the in-flight calibration, describes studies of the method based on Monte Carlo simulations and its laboratory verification and finally provides some observation results based on the in-flight data analysis.

Performance of triple GEM prototypes has been evaluated by means of a muon beam at the H4 line of the SPS test area at CERN. The data from two planar prototypes have been reconstructed and analyzed offline with two clusterization methods: the enter of gravity of the charge distribution and the micro Time Projection Chamber (\muTPC). Concerning the spatial resolution, the charge centroid cluster reconstruction performs extremely well with no magnetic field: the resolution is well below 100 \mum . Increasing the magnetic field intensity, the resolution degrades almost linearly as effect of the Lorentz force that displaces, broadens and asymmetrizes the electron avalanche. Tuning the electric fields of the GEM prototype we could achieve the unprecedented spatial resolution of 190 \mum at 1 Tesla. In order to boost the spatial resolution with strong magnetic field and inclined tracks a \muTPC cluster reconstruction has been investigated. Such a readout mode exploits the good time resolution of the GEM detector and electronics to reconstruct the trajectory of the particle inside the conversion gap. Beside the improvement of the spatial resolution, information on the track angle can be also extracted. The new clustering algorithm has been tested with diagonal tracks with no magnetic field showing a resolution between 100 um and 150 um for the incident angle ranging from 10° to 45° . Studies show similar performance with 1 Tesla magnetic field. This is the first use of a \muTPC readout with a triple GEM detector in magnetic field. This study has shown that a combined readout is capable to guarantee stable performance over a broad spectrum of particle momenta and incident angles, up to a 1 Tesla magnetic field.

A cylindrical GEM detector is under development, to serve as an upgraded inner tracker at the BESIII spectrometer. It will consist of three layers of cylindrically-shaped triple GEMs surrounding the interaction point. The experiment is taking data at the e+e- collider BEPCII in Bei**g (China) and the GEM tracker will be installed in 2018. Tests on the performances of triple GEMs in strong magnetic field have been run by means of the muon beam available in the H4 line of SPS (CERN) with both planar chambers and the first cylindrical prototype. Efficiencies and resolutions have been evaluated using different gains, gas mixtures, with and without magnetic field. The obtained efficiency is 97-98% on single coordinate view, in many operational arrangements. The spatial resolution for planar GEMs has been evaluated with two different algorithms for the position determination: the charge centroid and the micro time projection chamber (mu-TPC) methods. The two modes are complementary and are able to cope with the asymmetry of the electron avalanche when running in magnetic field, and with non-orthogonal incident tracks. With the charge centroid, a resolution lower than 100 micron has been reached without magnetic field and lower than 200 micron with a magnetic field up to 1 T. The mu-TPC mode showed to be able to improve those results. In the first beam test with the cylindrical prototype, the detector had a very good stability under different voltage configurations and particle intensities. The resolution evaluation is in progress.

For the upgrade of the inner tracker of the BESIII spectrometer, planned for 2018, a lightweight tracker based on an innovative Cylindrical Gas Electron Multiplier (CGEM) detector is now under development. The analogue readout of the CGEM enables the use of a charge centroid algorithm to improve the spatial resolution to better than 130 um while loosening the pitch strip to 650 um, which allows to reduce the total number of channels to about 10 000. The channels are readout by 160 dedicated integrated 64-channel front-end ASICs, providing a time and charge measurement and featuring a fully-digital output. The energy measurement is extracted either from the time-over-threshold (ToT) or the 10-bit digitisation of the peak amplitude of the signal. The time of the event is generated by quad-buffered low-power TDCs, allowing for rates in excess of 60 kHz per channel. The TDCs are based on analogue interpolation techniques and produce a time stamp (or two, if working in ToT mode) of the event with a time resolution better than 50 ps. The front-end noise, based on a CSA and CR-RC2 shapers, dominate the channel intrinsic time jitter, which is less than 5 ns r.m.s.. The time information of the hit can be used to reconstruct the track path, operating the detector as a small TPC and hence improving the position resolution when the distribution of the cloud, due to large incident angle or magnetic field, is very broad. Event data is collected by an off-detector motherboard, where each GEM-ROC readout card handles 4 ASIC carrier PCBs (512 channels). Configuration upload and data readout between the off-detector electronics and the VME-based data collector cards are managed by bi-directional fibre optical links.

As a space-borne detector POLAR is designed to conduct hard X-ray polarization measurements of gamma-ray bursts on the statistically significant sample of events and with an unprecedented accuracy. During its development phase a number of tests, calibrations runs and verification measurements were carried out in order to validate instrument functionality and optimize operational parameters. In this article we present results on gain optimization togeter with verification data obtained in the course of broad laboratory and environmental tests. In particular we focus on exposures to the $^{137}$Cs radioactive source and determination of the gain dependence on the high voltage for all 1600 detection channels of the polarimeter. Performance of the instrument is described in detail with respect to the dynamic range, energy resolution and temperature dependence. Gain optimization algorithms and response non-uniformity studies are also broadly discussed. Results presented below constitute important parts for development of the POLAR calibration and operation database.

Accurate prediction of the electronic and hydrogen storage properties of linear carbon chains (Cn) and Li-terminated linear carbon chains (Li2Cn), with n carbon atoms (n = 5 - 10), has been very challenging for traditional electronic structure methods, due to the presence of strong static correlation effects. To meet the challenge, we study these properties using our newly developed thermally-assisted-occupation density functional theory (TAO-DFT), a very efficient electronic structure method for the study of large systems with strong static correlation effects. Owing to the alteration of the reactivity of Cn and Li2Cn with n, odd-even oscillations in their electronic properties are found. In contrast to Cn, the binding energies of H2 molecules on Li2Cn are in (or close to) the ideal binding energy range (about 20 to 40 kJ/mol per H2). In addition, the H2 gravimetric storage capacities of Li2Cn are in the range of 10.7 to 17.9 wt%, satisfying the United States Department of Energy (USDOE) ultimate target of 7.5 wt%. On the basis of our results, Li2Cn can be high-capacity hydrogen storage materials for reversible hydrogen uptake and release at near-ambient conditions.

Unidirectional backward and forward scattering of electromagnetic waves by nanoparticles are usually interpreted as the interference of conventional multipole moments (i.e., electric and magnetic dipole, electric quadrupole, etc.). The role of toroidal dipole moments in unidirectional scattering is generally overlooked. In this work, we investigate the unidirectional scattering for the system of three plasmonic nanospheres. It is found that the unidirectional backward scattering is caused by the interference between the toroidal dipole moment and other conventional multipole moments. Tunable primary backward and forward scattering can be achieved under some specific configurations. Our results can find applications in the design of nanoantennas.

With a few simple modifications, global and range-separated hybrid functionals in Kohn-Sham density functional theory (KS-DFT) can be combined seamlessly with TAO-DFT. In comparison with global hybrid functionals in KS-DFT, the resulting global hybrid functionals in TAO-DFT yield promising performance for systems with strong static correlation effects (e.g., the dissociation of H2 and N2, twisted ethylene, and electronic properties of linear acenes), while maintaining similar performance for systems without strong static correlation effects. Besides, a reasonably accurate description of noncovalent interactions can be efficiently achieved through the inclusion of dispersion corrections in hybrid TAO-DFT. Relative to semilocal density functionals in TAO-DFT, global hybrid functionals in TAO-DFT are generally superior in performance for a wide range of applications, such as thermochemistry, kinetics, reaction energies, and optimized geometries.

To meet the challenge, we study these properties using our newly developed thermally-assisted-occupation density functional theory (TAO-DFT), a very efficient method for the study of large systems with strong static correlation effects. Besides, to examine the role of cyclic topology, the electronic properties of cyclacenes are also compared with those of acenes. Similar to acenes, the ground states of cyclacenes are singlets for all the cases studied. In contrast to acenes, the electronic properties of cyclacenes, however, exhibit oscillatory behavior (for n <= 30) in the approach to the corresponding properties of acenes with increasing number of benzene rings. On the basis of the calculated orbitals and their occupation numbers, the larger cyclacenes are shown to exhibit increasing polyradical character in their ground states, with the active orbitals being mainly localized at the peripheral carbon atoms.

We investigate the role of Kekule and non-Kekule structures in the radical character of alternant polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) using thermally-assisted-occupation density functional theory (TAO-DFT), an efficient electronic structure method for the study of large ground-state systems with strong static correlation effects. Our results reveal that the studies of Kekule and non-Kekule structures qualitatively describe the radical character of alternant PAHs, which could be useful when electronic structure calculations are infeasible due to the expensive computational cost. In addition, our results support previous findings on the increase in radical character with increasing system size. For alternant PAHs with the same number of aromatic rings, the geometrical arrangements of aromatic rings are responsible for their radical character.

The results are compared with the exact solutions of the time-dependent Schrodinger equation as well as those obtained with other XC potentials in RT-TDDFT. Owing to its correct (-1/r) asymptote, the LFAs-PBE potential significantly outperforms conventional XC potentials for the HHG spectra and the properties that are sensitive to the XC potential asymptote. Accordingly, the LFAs-PBE potential, which has a computational cost similar to that of the popular Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE) potential, can be very promising for the study of the ground-state, excited-state, and time-dependent properties of large electronic systems, extending the applicability of density functional methods for a diverse range of applications.

The exciton binding energy, the energy required to dissociate an excited electron-hole pair into free charge carriers, is one of the key factors to the optoelectronic performance of organic materials. However, it remains unclear whether modern quantum-mechanical calculations, mostly based on Kohn-Sham density functional theory (KS-DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT), are reliably accurate for exciton binding energies. In this study, the exciton binding energies and related optoelectronic properties (e.g., the ionization potentials, electron affinities, fundamental gaps, and optical gaps) of 121 small- to medium-sized molecules are calculated using KS-DFT and TDDFT with various density functionals. Our KS-DFT and TDDFT results are compared with those calculated using highly accurate CCSD and EOM-CCSD methods, respectively. We investigate the potential energy curves of rare-gas dimers with various ranges and strengths of interparticle interactions (nuclear-electron, electron-electron, and nuclear-nuclear interactions). Our investigation is based on the highly accurate coupled-cluster theory associated with those interparticle interactions. For comparison, the performance of the corresponding Hartree-Fock theory, second-order Moller-Plesset perturbation theory, and density functional theory is also investigated. Our results reveal that when the interparticle interactions retain the long-range Coulomb tails, the nature of van der Waals interactions in the rare-gas dimers remains similar. By contrast, when the interparticle interactions are sufficiently short-range, the conventional van der Waals interactions in the rare-gas dimers completely disappear, yielding purely repulsive potential energy curves.

In spite of extensive observations and numerous theoretical studies in the past decades several key questions related with Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRB) emission mechanisms are still to be answered. Precise detection of the GRB polarization carried out by dedicated instruments can provide new data and be an ultimate tool to unveil their real nature. A novel space-borne Compton polarimeter POLAR onboard the Chinese space station TG2 is designed to measure linear polarization of gamma-rays arriving from GRB prompt emissions. POLAR uses plastics scintillator bars (PS) as gamma-ray detectors and multi-anode photomultipliers (MAPMTs) for readout of the scintillation light. Inherent properties of such detection systems are crosstalk and non-uniformity. The crosstalk smears recorded energy over multiple channels making both non-uniformity corrections and energy calibration more difficult. Rigorous extraction of polarization observable requires to take such effects properly into account. We studied influence of the crosstalk on energy depositions during laboratory measurements with X-ray beams. A relation between genuine and recorded energy was deduced using an introduced model of data analysis. It postulates that both the crosstalk and non-uniformities can be described with a single matrix obtained in calibrations with mono-energetic X- and gamma-rays. Necessary corrections are introduced using matrix based equations allowing for proper evaluation of the measured GRB spectra. Validity of the method was established during dedicated experimental tests. The same approach can be also applied in space utilizing POLAR internal calibration sources. The introduced model is general and with some adjustments well suitable for data analysis from other MAPMT-based instruments.

We construct families of discrete solitons (DSs) in an array of self-defocusing waveguides with an embedded $\mathcal{PT}$ (parity-time)-symmetric dimer, which is represented by a pair of waveguides carrying mutually balanced gain and loss. Four types of states attached to the embedded defect are found, namely, staggered and unstaggered bright localized modes and gray or anti-gray DSs. Their existence and stability regions expand with the increase of the strength of the coupling between the dimer-forming sites. The existence of the gray and staggered bright DSs is qualitatively explained by dint of the continuum limit. All the gray and anti-gray DSs are stable (some of them are unstable if the dimer carries the nonlinear $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry, represented by balanced nonlinear gain and loss; in that case, the instability does not lead to a blowup, but rather creates oscillatory dynamical states). Propagation of spoof surface plasmon polaritons (spoof SPPs) on comb-shaped ultrathin metal strips made of aluminum foil and printed copper circuit are studied experimentally and numerically. With a near field scanning technique, electric field distributions on these metal strips are measured directly. The dispersion curves of spoof SPPs are thus obtained by means of Fourier transform of the field distributions in the real space for every frequency. Both fundamental and second order modes are investigated and the measured dispersions agree well with numerical ones calculated by the finite element method. Such direct measurements of the near field characteristics provide complete information of these spoof SPPs, enabling full exploitation of their properties associated with the field confinement in a subwavelength scale.

Abstract:
Discrete fundamental and dipole solitons are constructed, in an exact analytical form, in an array of linear waveguides with an embedded $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric dimer, which is composed of two nonlinear waveguides carrying equal gain and loss. Fundamental solitons in tightly knit lattices, as well as all dipole modes, exist above a finite threshold value of the total power. However, the threshold…

However, the threshold vanishes for fundamental solitons in loosely knit lattices. The stability of the discrete solitons is investigated analytically by means of the Vakhitov-Kolokolov (VK) criterion, and, in the full form, via the computation of eigenvalues for perturbation modes. Fundamental and dipole solitons tend to be stable at smaller and larger values of the total power (norm), respectively. The increase of the strength of the coupling between the two defect-forming sites leads to strong expansion of the stability areas. The scattering problem for linear lattice waves im**ing upon the defect is considered too.
