Efficient sub-Doppler laser cooling and optical trap** of YO molecules offer new opportunities to study collisional dynamics in the quantum regime. Efficient sub-Doppler laser cooling and optical trap** of YO molecules offer new opportunities to study collisional dynamics in the quantum regime. Confined in a crossed optical dipole trap, we achieve the highest phase-space density of $2.5 \times 10^{-5}$ for a bulk laser-cooled molecular sample. This sets the stage to study YO-YO collisions in the microkelvin temperature regime, and reveal state-dependent, single-partial-wave two-body collisional loss rates. We determine the partial-wave contributions to specific rotational states (first excited $N=1$ and ground $N=0$) following two strategies. First, we measure the change of the collision rate in a spin mixture of $N=1$ by tuning the kinetic energy with respect to the p- and d-wave centrifugal barriers. Second, we compare loss rates between a spin mixture and a spin-polarized state in $N=0$. Using quantum defect theory with a partially absorbing boundary condition at short range, we show that the dependence on temperature for $N=1$ can be reproduced in the presence of a d-wave or f-wave resonance, and the dependence on a spin mixture for $N=0$ with a p-wave resonance.

Direct laser cooling of molecules has reached a phase space density exceeding 10$^{-6}$ in optical traps, but with rather small molecular numbers. To progress towards quantum degeneracy, a mechanism is needed that combines sub-Doppler cooling and magneto-optical trap** (MOT) to facilitate near unity transfer of ultracold molecules from the MOT to a conservative optical trap. Using the unique energy level structure of YO molecules, we demonstrate the first blue-detuned MOT for molecules that is optimized for both gray-molasses sub-Doppler cooling and relatively strong trap** forces. This first sub-Doppler molecular MOT provides an increase of phase-space density by two orders of magnitude over any previously reported molecular MOT.

Abstract:
We report laser cooling and trap** of yttrium monoxide (YO) molecules in an optical lattice. We show that gray molasses cooling remains exceptionally efficient for YO molecules inside the lattice with a molecule temperature as low as 6.1(6) $μ$K. This approach has produced a trapped sample of 1200 molecules, with a peak spatial density of $\sim1.2\times10^{10}$ cm$^{-3}$, and a peak phase-space…

This approach has produced a trapped sample of 1200 molecules, with a peak spatial density of $\sim1.2\times10^{10}$ cm$^{-3}$, and a peak phase-space density of $\sim3.1\times10^{-6}$. By adiabatically ram** down the lattice depth, we cool the molecules further to 1.0(2) $μ$K, twenty times colder than previously reported for laser-cooled molecules in a trap.

Complex molecular structure demands customized solutions to laser cooling by extending its general set of principles and practices. Yttrium monoxide (YO) has unique intramolecular interactions. The Fermi-contact interaction dominates over the spin-rotation coupling, resulting in two manifolds of closely spaced states, with one of them possessing a negligible Landé g-factor. This unique energy level structure favors dual-frequency DC magneto-optical trap** (MOT) and gray molasses cooling (GMC). We report exceptionally robust cooling of YO at 4 $μ$K over a wide range of laser intensity, detunings (one and two-photon), and magnetic field. The magnetic insensitivity enables the spatial compression of the molecular cloud by alternating GMC and MOT under the continuous operation of the quadrupole magnetic field. A combination of these techniques produces a laser-cooled molecular sample with the highest phase space density in free space.
