The properties of plasmas in the low-density limit are described by virial expansions. Analytical expressions are known from Green's function approaches only for the first three virial coefficients. Accurate path integral Monte Carlo (PIMC) simulations have recently been performed for the uniform electron gas, allowing the virial expansions to be analyzed and interpolation formulas to be derived. The exact expression for the second virial coefficient is used to test the accuracy of the PIMC simulations and the range of validity of the interpolation formula of Groth {\it et al.}~[Phys.~Rev.~Lett.~\textbf{119}, 135001 (2017)]. We discuss the fourth virial coefficient, which is of interest, e.g., for properties of solar plasmas, but has not yet been precisely known. Combining PIMC simulations with benchmarks from exact results of the virial expansion would allow us to obtain precise results for the equation of state (EoS) in a wide range of parameters.

We demonstrate heavy and hyper do** of ZnO by a combination of gallium (Ga) ion implantation using a focused ion beam (FIB) system and post-implantation laser annealing. Ion implantation allows for the incorporation of impurities with nearly arbitrary concentrations, and the laser-annealing process enables dopant activation close to or beyond the solid-solubility limit of Ga in ZnO. We achieved heavily doped ZnO:Ga with free-carrier concentrations of ~10^21 cm^(-3), resulting in a plasma wavelength of 1.02 um, which is substantially shorter than the telecommunication wavelength of 1.55 um. Thus, our approach enables the control of the plasma frequency of ZnO from the far infrared down to 1.02 um, providing a promising plasmonic material for applications in this regime.

The electronic exchange-correlation (XC) kernel constitutes a fundamental input for the estimation of a gamut of material properties such as the dielectric characteristics, the thermal and electrical conductivity, or the response to an external perturbation. In practice, no reliable method has been known that allows to compute the kernel of real materials with arbitrary XC functionals. In this work, we overcome this long-standing limitation by introducing a new, formally exact methodology for the computation of the material specific static XC kernel exclusively within the framework of density functional theory (DFT) and without employing functional derivatives -- no external input apart from the usual XC-functional is required. We compare our new results with exact quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) data for the archetypical uniform electron gas model at both ambient and warm dense matter conditions. This gives us unprecedented insights into the performance of different XC-functionals, and has important implications for the development of new functionals that are designed for the application at extreme temperatures. In addition, we obtain new DFT results for the XC kernel of warm dense hydrogen as it occurs in fusion applications and astrophysical objects. The observed excellent agreement to the QMC reference data demonstrates that our framework is capable to capture nontrivial effects such as XC-induced isotropy breaking in the density response of hydrogen at large wave numbers.

This document provides an overview of the landscape of the investigation of the QCD phase diagram in the region of maximum baryonic density, where NICA and MPD will be able to provide significant and unique input. It also provides a detailed description of the MPD set-up, including its various subsystems as well as its support and computing infrastructures. The effective mass approximation is analysed in a nonperturbative kinetic theory approach to strong field excitations in graphene [1,2]. This problem is highly actual for the investigation of quantum radiation from graphene [3], where the collision integrals in the photon kinetic equation are rather complicated functionals of the distribution functions of the charge carriers. These functions are needed in the explicit analytical definition as solutions of the kinetic equations for the electron-hole excitations. In the present work it is shown that the suggested approach is rather effective in a certain range of parameters for the pulse of an external electromagnetic field. For example, the applicability condition of the approximation in the case of a harmonic field is $\hbar ω^2 / (\sqrt{2} e E_0 v_F) < 1$, were $v_F$ is the Fermi velocity. In the standard massive quantum electrodynamics the usability of the analogical approximation is very narrow.

Solutions to the differential equations of linear elasticity in the continuum limit in arbitrary crystal symmetry are known only for steady-state dislocations of arbitrary character, i.e. line defects moving at constant velocity. Troubled by singularities at certain `critical' velocities (typically close to certain sound speeds), these dislocation fields are thought to be too idealized, and divergences are usually attributed to neglecting the finite size of the core and to the restriction to constant velocity. In the isotropic limit, accelerating pure screw and edge dislocations were studied some time ago. A generalization to anisotropic crystals has been attempted for pure screw and edge dislocations only for some special cases. This work aims to fill the gap of deriving a general anisotropic solution for pure screw dislocations applicable to slip systems featuring a reflection symmetry, a prerequisite to studying pure screw dislocations without mixing with edge dislocations. Further generalizations to arbitrary mixed dislocations as well as regularizations of the dislocation core are beyond the scope of this paper and are left for future work.

As examples the constant electric field as well as an electric field of short high-frequency pulses are considered. The dependence of the induced conduction and polarization currents characteristics on the pulse intensity, pulse duration, and polarization is investigated. The characteristics of secondary electromagnetic radiation resulting from the alternating currents is investigated. The nonlinear response to the external electric field characterizes graphene as an active medium. Qualitative agreement is obtained with the existing experimental result of measurements of currents in constant electric fields and radiation from graphene in the case of excitation by means of the infrared and optical pulses.

To investigate the effect of collisions as dam** and non-ideality factor, the longitudinal and transverse dielectric functions of the quark-gluon plasma are used within the Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook (BGK) approach. The results were obtained both analytically and numerically in the long wavelength limit. First of all, collisions lead to smaller values of surface wave frequency and their stronger dam**. Secondly, the results show that non-ideality leads to the appearance of a new branch of surface waves compared to the collisionless case. The relevance of the surface excitations (waves) for the QGP realized in experiments is discussed.

The formalism of the nonperturbative description of transport phenomena in graphene on the framework of the quantum kinetic equation for the Schwinger-like process is compared with the description on the basis of Zener-Klein tunneling. The regime of ballistic conductivity in a constant electric field is considered.
In the latter case the interaction of carriers with electric field is described in terms of the spatial dependence of their potential energy (x-representation). The presented kinetic formalism uses an alternative method of describing the interaction with a field through the introduction of a quasimomentum $P=p-(e/c)A(t)$ where $A(t)$ is the vector potential (t-representation). Both approaches should lead to the same physical characteristics of the described process.
The measurement of the current in experiments is realized in static conditions determined by the potential difference between the electrodes and the distance between them. These parameters are native for the x-representation. On the contrary, in the approach based on the t-representation it is necessary to consider the situation in dynamics and introduce the effective lifetime of the generated carriers. In the ballistic regime this time depends on the distance between the electrodes.
We give a detailed comparison of these two descriptions of the current and demonstrate good coincidence with the experimental data of the alternative approach based on the t-representation. It provides a reliable foundation for the application of nonperturbative methods adopted from strong field QED, that allows to include in the consideration more general models of the field (arbitrary polarization and time dependence) and to extend the scope of the theory.

New facilities explore warm dense matter (WDM) at extreme conditions where the densities are very high (e.g., carbon up to density of 50 g cm$^{-3}$) so that electrons are degenerate even at 100 eV temperature. Whereas in the non-degenerate region correlation effects such as Debye screening and its improvements are relevant for the ionization potential depression (IPD), new effects have to be considered in degenerate plasmas. In addition to the Fock shift of the self-energies, the bound-state Pauli blocking becomes important with increasing density. Taking these degeneracy effects into account leads to a reduction of the ionization potential and to a higher degree of ionization. Standard approaches to IPD such as Stewart-Pyatt and widely used opacity tables (e.g., OPAL) do not contain Pauli blocking effects for bound states so that they fail to explain experiments with WDM in the high density region. As example, results for the ionization degree of carbon plasmas are presented.

We first give a derivation of the kinetic equation with the source term for the case of fermions starting from the Dirac equation and for bosons from the Klein-Gordon equation. In a second part we discuss the application of the approach to the situation of external field pulses as single-sheeted functions of time (like the Sauter-pulse) and as multi- sheeted functions approximating the situation in the focal point of counter-propagating laser beams. Special emphasis is on the discussion of the time evolution of the system that exhibits the characteristics of a field-induced phase transition for which we discuss the behaviour of the entropy and particle density of the system. We give an outlook to applications of the approach in describing particle production in strong fields formed in particle and nuclear collisions.

In the present contribution the features of the this process will be considered in the few photon domain where $ω\sim m$. We observe a narrowing of the transient domain of the fast oscillations and, mainly, a considerable growth of the effectiveness of the EPP production. Under these circumstances, we see an increase of the effectiveness of the EPP creation in the particular case of a bifrequent excitation, where both mechanisms (tunneling and few photon) act simultaneously [2,3].

The features of vacuum particle creation in an external classical field are studied for simplest external field models in $3 + 1$ dimensional QED. The investigation is based on a kinetic equation that is a nonperturbative consequence of the fundamental equations of motion of QED. The observed features of the evolution of the system apply on the qualitative level also for systems of other nature and therefore are rather general. Examples from cosmology and condensed matter physics illustrate this statement. The common basis for the description of these systems are kinetic equations for vacuum particle creation belonging to the class of integro-differential equations of non-Markovian type with fastly oscillating kernel. This allows to characterize processes of this type as belonging to the class of field induced phase transitions.

Such a comparison demonstrates a considerable divergence results. We analyse some reasoning for this observation and conclude that WKB-type approximations have an insufficient foundation for QED in strong nonstationary fields. The results obtained in this work on the basis of the kinetic approach are most optimistic for the observation of an $e^{+}e^{-}$ - plasma in the range of optical and x-ray laser facilities. An important first step in the program of hadronization of chiral quark models is the bosonization in meson and diquark channels. This procedure is presented at finite temperatures and chemical potentials for the SU(2) flavor case of the NJL model with special emphasis on the mixing between scalar meson and scalar diquark modes which occurs in the 2SC color superconducting phase. The thermodynamic potential is obtained in the gaussian approximation for the meson and diquark fields and it is given the Beth-Uhlenbeck form. This allows a detailed discussion of bound state dissociation in hot, dense matter (Mott effect) in terms of the in-medium scattering phase shift of two-particle correlations. It is shown for the case without meson-diquark mixing that the phase shift can be separated into a continuum and a resonance part. In the latter, the Mott transition manifests itself by a change of the phase shift at threshold by π in accordance with Levinson's theorem, when a bound state transforms to a resonance in the scattering continuum. The consequences for the contribution of pionic correlations to the pressure are discussed by evaluating the Beth-Uhlenbeck equation of state in different approximations. A similar discussion is performed for the scalar diquark channel in the normal phase. Further developments and applications of the developed approach are outlined.

The dependence of the quasiparticle electron (positron) distribution function and the particle number density is explored in a wide range of the laser radiation parameters, i.e., the wavelength λand amplitude of electric field strength E_0. Three domains are found: the domain of vacuum polarization effects where the density of the e-e+ pairs is small (the "calm valley"), and two accumulation domains in which the production rate of the e-e+ pairs is strongly increased and the e-e+ pair density can reach a significant value (the short wave length domain and the strong field one). In particular, the obtained results point to a complicated short-distance electromagnetic structure of the physical vacuum in the domain of short wavelengths λ\lessim λ_{acc} = π/m. For moderately strong fields E_0 \lesssim E_c=m^2/e, the accumulation regime can be realized where a plasma with a high density of e-e+ quasiparticles can be achieved. In this domain of the field strengths and in the whole investigated range of wavelengths, an observation of the dynamical Schwinger effect can be facilitated.

We obtain the distribution function in this approximation and discuss its properties.

We use the low density approximation within the kinetic theory approach to vacuum creation of an e-e+ pair plasma (EPPP) in a strong laser field in order to investigate the dependence of the observed EPPP on the form and parameters of a single laser pulse. The EPPP distribution function is calculated for an arbitrary time dependence of the electric field in the multiphoton domain (adiabaticity parameter gamma >> 1). The dependence on the field strength, the form and spectrum of the field pulse is investigated on the basis both analytical and numerical methods. The obtained results can be useful for examining some observable secondary processes associated with the dynamical Schwinger effect.

In the present work a closed system of kinetic equations is obtained from the truncation of the BBGKY hierarchy for the description of the vacuum creation of an electron - positron plasma and secondary photons due to a strong laser field. This truncation is performed in the Markovian approximation for the one-photon annihilation channel which is accessible due to the presence of the strong external field. Estimates of the photon production rate are obtained for different domains of laser field parameters (frequency nu and field strength E). A huge quantity of optical photons of the quasiclassical laser field is necessary to satisfy the conservation laws of energy and momentum of the constituents (e-, e+, gamma) in this channel. Since the number of these optical photons corresponds to the order of perturbation theory, a vanishingly small photon production rate results for the optical region and strongly subcritical fields E << E_c. In the gamma-ray region nu <~ m the required number of laser photons is small and the production rate of photons from the one-photon annihilation process becomes accessible to observations for subcritical fields E <~ E_c. In the infrared region the photon distribution has a 1/k spectrum typical for flicker noise.

One example is the one-photon annihilation process considered recently by the present authors in the framework of a kinetic approach to the quasiparticle e-e+ gamma plasma created from vacuum in the focal spot of two counter-propagating laser beams. In these works the domain of large values of the adiabaticity parameter gamma >> 1 (corresponding to multiphoton processes) was considered. In the present work we estimate the intensity of the radiation stemming from photon annihilation in the framework of the effective mass model where gamma < 1, corresponding to large electric fields E < E_c=m^2/e and high laser field frequencies (the domain characteristic for X-ray lasers of the next generation). Under such limiting conditions the resulting effect is sufficiently large to be accessible to experimental observation.

We investigate the domain of large adiabaticity parameters gamma >> 1 where the photon radiation turns out to be very small. A more thorough examination of the domain gamma < 1 needs separate investigation. However, an exploratory study has shown that the one-photon annihilation channel can lead for some domains of laser field parameters (e.g., for the XFEL) to contributions accessible for observation.

A quantum field theoretical approach to the thermodynamics of dense Fermi systems is developed for the description of the formation and dissolution of quantum condensates and bound states in dependence of temperature and density. As a model system we study the chiral and superconducting phase transitions in two-flavor quark matter within the NJL model and their interrelation with the formation of quark-antiquark and diquark bound states. The phase diagram of quark matter is evaluated as a function of the diquark coupling strength and a coexistence region of chiral symmetry breaking and color superconductivity is obtained at very strong coupling. The crossover between Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of diquark bound states and condensation of diquark resonances (Cooper pairs) in the continuum (BCS) is discussed as a Mott effect. This effect consists in the transition of bound states into the continuum of scattering states under the influence of compression and heating. We explain the physics of the Mott transition with special emphasis on role of the Pauli principle for the case of the pion in quark matter.

Our approach is based on the collisionless kinetic equation for the evolution of the e^+ and e^- distribution functions governed by a non-Markovian source term for pair production. As possible experimental signals of vacuum pair production we consider e^+e^- annihilation into gamma-pairs and the refraction of a high-frequency probe laser beam by the produced e^+e^- plasma. We discuss the dependence of the dynamical pair production process on laser wavelength, with special emphasis on applications in the X-ray domain (X-FEL), as well as the prospects for μ^+μ^- and π^+π^- pair creation at high-intensity lasers. We investigate perspectives for using high-intensity lasers as ``boosters'' of ion beams in the few-GeV per nucleon range, which is relevant, e.g., to the exploration of the QCD phase transition in laboratory experiments.

We investigate the effects of Pauli blocking on the properties of hydrogen at high pressures, where recent experiments have shown a transition from insulating behavior to metal-like conductivity. Since the Pauli principle prevents multiple occupation of electron states (Pauli blocking), atomic states disintegrate subsequently at high densities (Mott effect). We calculate the energy shifts due to Pauli blocking and discuss the Mott effect solving an effective Schroedinger equation for strongly correlated systems. The ionization equilibrium is treated on the basis of a chemical approach. Results for the ionization equilibrium and the pressure in the region 4.000 K < T < 20.000 K are presented. We show that the transition to a highly conducting state is softer than found in earlier work. A first order phase transition is observed at T < 6.450 K, but a diffuse transition appears still up to 20.000 K.

Electron-positron pair creation in a standing wave is explored using a parameter-free quantum kinetic equation. Field strengths and frequencies corresponding to modern optical lasers induce a material polarisation of the QED vacuum, which may be characterised as a plasma of e^+ e^- quasiparticle pairs with a density of ~10^{20}cm^{-3}. The plasma vanishes almost completely when the laser field is zero, leaving a very small residual pair density, n_r, which is the true manifestation of vacuum decay. The average pair density per period is proportional to the laser intensity but independent of the frequency, ν. The density of residual pairs also grows with laser intensity but n_r \propto ν^2. With optical lasers at the forefront of the current generation, these dynamical QED vacuum effects may generate 5-10 observable two-photon annihilation events per laser pulse.

The possibility to observe vacuum electron-positron pair creation due to a powerful optical laser pulse is discussed. We employ a quantum kinetic formulation of the problem with a source term describing the vacuum pair production in a homogeneous electric field with arbitrary time dependence (dynamical Schwinger mechanism). For a periodic field weak in comparison with the critical value E_{cr}=m^2/|e|, the electron-positron plasma density changes approximately periodically with twice the field frequency. Under these conditions, the mean value $<n>$ for the density per period in the volume lambda^3 is a more appropriate characteristic quantity than the residual density n_r which is taken over an integer number of field periods and calculated using the imaginary time method. The value <n> is proportional to the squared field intensity and does not depend on the frequency. We show that in terms of the parameter <n> an optical laser can be more effective than a X-ray one. We expect that it is possible to observe the vacuum creation effect not only by means of the planned X-ray free electron lasers but already at present-day optical lasers.
