In the past twenty years, we have reached a broad understanding of many light-driven phenomena in nanoscale systems. The temporal dynamics of the excited states are instead quite challenging to explore, and, at the same time, crucial to study for understanding the origin of fundamental physical and chemical processes. In this review we examine the current state and prospects of ultrafast phenomena driven by plasmons both from a fundamental and applied point of view. This research area is referred to as ultrafast plasmonics and represents an outstanding playground to tailor and control fast optical and electronic processes at the nanoscale, such as ultrafast optical switching, single photon emission and strong coupling interactions to tailor photochemical reactions. Here, we provide an overview of the field, and describe the methodologies to monitor and control nanoscale phenomena with plasmons at ultrafast timescales in terms of both modeling and experimental characterization. Various directions are showcased, among others recent advances in ultrafast plasmon-driven chemistry and multi-functional plasmonics, in which charge, spin, and lattice degrees of freedom are exploited to provide active control of the optical and electronic properties of nanoscale materials. As the focus shifts to the development of practical devices, such as all-optical transistors, we also emphasize new materials and applications in ultrafast plasmonics and highlight recent development in the relativistic realm. The latter is a promising research field with potential applications in fusion research or particle and light sources providing properties such as attosecond duration.

We present SERS-active metal holographic metasurfaces fabricated from metal periodical nanograting deposited on a dielectric substrate. The metasurface consists of a modulated dielectric, which is covered by a thin silver layer. The metasurface operates as an open plasmon resonator. The theory of plasmons excited in the open resonator formed by a metal nanograting is presented. The large local electromagnetic field is predicted for optical frequencies. The excitation of plasmons is experimentally demonstrated in the metasurface designed on a 4-inch Si wafer. The enhancement of the local electric field results in surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). To investigate the SERS effect, the metasurfaces are covered by molecules of 4-mercaptophenylboronic acid, which form covalent bonds with the silver nanolayer and serve as a proof-of-concept. Finally, we obtain a detection limit of 230 nM for molecules of 4-mercaptophenylboronic acid.

We propose the theory of the plasmon excited in ultra-narrow plasmonic gap formed by a metal cylinder on a metal surface, that generates a huge resonant local electromagnetic field in optical frequencies. Resonance conditions are found. The maximum possible enhancement of the electric field in the nanogap is estimated as $\left|E_{max} \right|/ \left| E_{0} \right| \propto \left| \varepsilon_m \right|^{3} \varepsilon_{d}^{-1} \left( \Im \varepsilon_{m}\right) ^{-2}$ A simple ultranarrow-gaped resonator can be used for SERS sensing and infrared spectroscopy of adsorbed molecules. We assume that a plasmonic nanogap is simplest and most straightforward way to increase flexibility as well as sensitivity of the plasmon-enhanced spectroscopes.

The plasmonic amplification of non-linear vibrational sum frequency spectroscopy (SFG) at the surfaces of gold nanoparticles is systematically investigated by tuning the incident visible wavelength. The SFG spectra of dodecanethiol-coated gold nanoparticles chemically deposited on silicon are recorded for twenty visible wavelengths. The vibrational intensities of thiol methyl stretches extracted from the experimental measurements vary with the visible color of the SFG process and show amplification by coupling to plasmonics. Since the enhancement is maximal in the orange-red region rather than in the green, as expected from the dipolar model for surface plasmon resonances, it is attributed mostly to hotspots created in particle multimers, in spite of their low surface densities.

We fabricated hybrid metal-dielectric nanoantennas and measured their optical response at three different wavelengths. The nanostructure is fabricated on a bilayer film formed by the sequential deposition of silicon and gold on a transparent substrate. The optical characterization is done via fluorescence measurements. We characterized the fluorescence enhancement, as well as the lifetime and detection volume reduction for each wavelength. We observe that the hybrid metal-dielectric nanoantennas behave as enhanced Zero Mode Waveguides in the near-infrared spectral region. Their detection volume is such that they can perform enhanced single-molecule detection at tens of microM. However, a wavelength blue-shift of 40 nm dramatically decreases the performance of the nanoantennas. We compared their behavior with that of a golden ZMW, and we verified that the dielectric silicon layer improves the design. We interpreted the experimental observations with the help of numerical simulations. In addition, the simulations showed that the field enhancement of the structure highly depends on the incoming beam: tightly focused beams yield lower field enhancements than plane-waves.

A thermal antenna is an electromagnetic source which emits in its surrounding, a spatially coherent field in the infrared frequency range. Usually, its emission pattern changes with the wavelength so that the heat flux it radiates is weakly directive. Here, we show that a class of hyperbolic materials, possesses a Brewster angle which is weakly dependent on the wavelength, so that they can radiate like a true thermal antenna with a highly directional heat flux. The realization of these sources could open a new avenue in the field of thermal management in far-field regime.
