Processes involving ultrafast laser driven electron-phonon dynamics play a fundamental role in the response of quantum systems in a growing number of situations of interest, as evidenced by phenomena such as strongly driven phase transitions and light driven engineering of material properties. To show how these processes can be captured from a computational perspective, we simulate the transient absorption spectra and high harmonic generation signals associated with valley selective excitation and intra-band charge carrier relaxation in monolayer hexagonal boron nitride. We show that the multi-trajectory Ehrenfest dynamics approach, implemented in combination with real-time time-dependent density functional theory and tight-binding models, offers a simple, accurate and efficient method to study ultrafast electron-phonon coupled phenomena in solids under diverse pump-probe regimes which can be easily incorporated into the majority of real-time ab-initio software packages.

Without access to the full quantum state, modeling quantum transport in mesoscopic systems requires dealing with a limited number of degrees of freedom. In this work, we analyze the possibility of modeling the perturbation induced by the non-simulated degrees of freedom on the simulated ones as a transition between single-particle pure states. First, we show that Bohmian conditional wave functions (BCWF) allow a rigorous discussion of the dynamics of electrons inside open quantum systems in terms of such single-particle pure states, either under Markovian or non-Markovian conditions. Second, we discuss the practical application of the method for modeling light-matter interaction phenomena in a resonant tunneling device (RTD), where a single photon is interacting with a single electron. Third, we emphasize the importance of interpreting such scattering mechanism as a transition between initial and final single-particle BCWF with well-defined energies (rather than with well-defined momenta).

We demonstrate that a conditional wavefunction theory enables a unified and efficient treatment of the equilibrium structure and nonadiabatic dynamics of correlated electron-ion systems. The conditional decomposition of the many-body wavefunction formally recasts the full interacting wavefunction of a closed system as a set of lower dimensional (conditional) coupled `slices'. We formulate a variational wavefunction ansatz based on a set of conditional wavefunction slices, and demonstrate its accuracy by determining the structural and time-dependent response properties of the hydrogen molecule. We then extend this approach to include time-dependent conditional wavefunctions, and address paradigmatic nonequilibrium processes including strong-field molecular ionization, laser driven proton transfer, and Berry phase effects induced by a conical intersection. This work paves the road for the application of conditional wavefunction theory in equilibrium and out of equilibrium ab-initio molecular simulations of finite and extended systems.

We show how vibronic spectra in molecular systems can be simulated in an efficient and accurate way using first principles approaches without relying on the explicit use of multiple Born-Oppenheimer potential energy surfaces. We demonstrate and analyse the performance of mean field and beyond mean field dynamics techniques for the \ch{H_2} molecule in one-dimension, in the later case capturing the vibronic structure quite accurately, including quantum Franck-Condon effects. In a practical application of this methodology we simulate the absorption spectrum of benzene in full dimensionality using time-dependent density functional theory at the multi-trajectory mean-field level, finding good qualitative agreement with experiment. These results show promise for future applications of this methodology in capturing phenomena associated with vibronic coupling in more complex molecular, and potentially condensed phase systems.

There is a renewed interest in the derivation of statistical mechanics from the dynamics of closed quantum systems. A central part of this program is to understand how far-from-equilibrium closed quantum system can behave as if relaxing to a stable equilibrium. Equilibration dynamics has been traditionally studied with a focus on the so-called quenches of large-scale many-body systems. Alternatively, we consider here the equilibration of a molecular model system describing the double proton transfer reaction in porphine. Using numerical simulations, we show that equilibration in this context indeed takes place and does so very rapidly ($\sim \!\! 200$fs) for initial states induced by pump-dump laser pulse control with energies well above the synchronous tunneling barrier.

We present an efficient \textit{ab initio} algorithm for quantum dynamics simulations of interacting systems that is based on the conditional decomposition of the many-body wavefunction [Phys. Rev. Lett. 113, 083003 (2014)]. Starting with this formally exact approach, we develop a stochastic wavefunction ansatz using a set of interacting conditional wavefunctions as a basis. We show that this technique achieves quantitative accuracy for a photo-excited proton-coupled electron transfer problem and for nonequilibrium dynamics in a cavity bound electron-photon system in the ultra-strong coupling regime, using two orders of magnitude fewer trajectories than the corresponding mean field calculation. This method is highly parallelizable, and constitutes a practical and efficient alternative to available quantum-classical simulation methods for systems of interacting fermions and bosons.

After the seminal work of R. Landauer in 1957 relating the electrical resistance of a conductor to its scattering properties, much progress has been made in our ability to predict the performance of electron devices in the DC (stationary) regime. Computational tools to describe their dynamical behavior (including the AC, transient and noise performance), however, are far from being as trustworthy as would be desired by the electronic industry. While there is no fundamental limitation to correctly modeling the high-frequency quantum transport and its fluctuations, certainly more careful attention must be paid to delicate issues such as overall charge neutrality, total current conservation, or the back action of the measuring apparatus. In this review, we will show how the core ideas behind the Bohmian formulation of quantum mechanics can be exploited to design an efficient Monte Carlo algorithm that provides a quantitative description of electron transport in open quantum systems. By making the most of trajectory-based and wave function methods, the BITLLES simulator, a free software developed by the authors, extends the capabilities that the semi-classical Monte Carlo simulation technique has offered for decades (DC, AC, noise, transients) to the quantum regime.

It was recently shown [G. Albareda, et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 113, 083003 (2014)] that within the conditional decomposition approach to the coupled electron-nuclear dynamics, the electron-nuclear wave function can be exactly decomposed into an ensemble of nuclear wavepackets effectively governed by nuclear conditional time-dependent potential-energy surfaces (C-TDPESs). Employing a one-dimensional model system we show that for strong nonadiabatic couplings the nuclear C-TDPESs exhibit steps that bridge piecewise adiabatic Born-Oppenheimer PESs. The nature of these steps is identified as an effect of electron-nuclear correlation. Furthermore, a direct comparison with similar discontinuities recently reported in the context of the exact factorization framework allows us to draw conclusions about the universality of these discontinuities, viz. they are inherent to all nonadiabatic nuclear dynamics approaches based on (exact) time-dependent potential energy surfaces.

The molecular Schrödinger equation is rewritten in terms of non-unitary equations of motion for the nuclei (or electrons) that depend parametrically on the configuration of an ensemble of generally defined electronic (or nuclear) trajectories. This scheme is exact and does not rely on the tracing-out of degrees of freedom. Hence, the use of trajectory-based statistical techniques can be exploited to circumvent the calculation of the computationally demanding Born-Oppenheimer potential-energy surfaces and non-adiabatic coupling elements. The concept of potential-energy surface is restored by establishing a formal connection with the exact factorization of the full wave function. This connection is used to gain insight from a simplified form of the exact propagation scheme.
