The inner fission barriers of the even-even uranium isotopes from the proton to the neutron drip line are studied with the deformed relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov theory in continuum. A periodic evolution for the ground state shapes is shown with the neutron number, i.e., spherical shapes at shell closures $N=$126, 184, 258, and prolate dominated shapes between them. In analogy to the shape evolution, the inner fission barriers also exhibit a periodic behavior: peaks at the shell closures and valleys in the mid-shells. The triaxial effect to the inner fission barrier is evaluated using the triaxial relativistic mean field calculations plus a simple BCS method for pairing. With the triaxial correction included, good consistency in the inner barrier heights is found with the available empirical data. Besides, the evolution from the proton to the neutron drip line is in accord with the results by the multi-dimensionally constrained relativistic mean field theory. A flat valley in the fission barrier height is predicted around the neutron-rich nucleus $^{318}$U which may play a role of fission recycling in the astrophysical $r$-process nucleosynthesis.

A microscopic self-consistent triaxial relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov theory in continuum (TRHBc), which simultaneously takes into account the triaxiality and pairing correlations as well as continuum effects, is established and applied to explore the novel halo phenomenon in aluminum isotopes. The experimental proton drip line and the available data of neutron separation energies and charge radii are reproduced well without any free parameters. The neutron-richest odd-odd aluminum isotope observed so far, 42Al, is predicted to be triaxially deformed with beta=0.35 and gamma=42. Its one-neutron separation energy is predicted to be 0.68 MeV, in agreement with the AME2020, and the neutron rms radius is 3.94 fm, remarkably larger than the empirical value. The density distribution of the valance neutron, which extends much farther in space than the core, suggests a possible neutron halo in 42Al. The dominant components responsible for the spatial extension of the halo are revealed by the single-neutron orbitals around the Fermi energy. A novel phenomenon, the exchange of the intermediate and short axes between the triaxial core with beta=0.38 and gamma=50, and the triaxial halo with beta=0.79 and gamma=-23, is found. Future experiments to explore the halo phenomenon and the novel shape decoupling in 42Al are highly demanded.

The Woods-Saxon basis has achieved great success in both nonrelativistic and covariant density functional theories in recent years. Due to its nonanalytical nature, however, applications of the Woods-Saxon basis are numerically complicated and computationally time consuming. In this paper, based on the deformed relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov theory in continuum (DRHBc), we check in detail the convergence with respect to the basis space in the Dirac sea. An optimized Dirac Woods-Saxon basis is proposed, whose corresponding potential is close to the nuclear mean field. It is shown that the basis space of the optimized Dirac Woods-Saxon basis required for convergence is substantially reduced compared with the original one. In particular, it does not need to contain the bases from continuum in the Dirac sea. The application of the optimized Woods-Saxon basis would greatly reduce computing resource for large-scale density functional calculations.

Nuclear chronometer, which predicts the ages of the oldest stars by comparing the present and initial abundances of long-lived radioactive nuclides, provides an independent dating technique for the cosmos. A new nuclear chronometer called Th-U-X chronometer is proposed, which imposes stringent constraints on the astrophysical conditions in the $r$-process simulation by synchronizing the previous Th/X, U/X and Th/U chronometers. The astrophysical uncertainties of nuclear chronometer are significantly reduced from more than $\pm2$ billion years to within 0:3 billion years by the Th-U-X chronometer. The proposed chronometer is then applied to estimate the ages of the six metal-poor stars with observed uranium abundances, and the predicted ages are compatible with the cosmic age 13.8 billion years predicted from the cosmic microwave background radiation, but in contradictory with the new cosmic age 11.4 billion years from the gravitational lenses measurement.

Possible bound nuclei beyond the two-neutron drip line in the $50\leqslant Z \leqslant 70$ region are investigated by using the deformed relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov theory in continuum with density functional PC-PK1. Bound nuclei beyond the drip lines of $_{56}$Ba, $_{58}$Ce, $_{62}$Sm, $_{64}$Gd and $_{66}$Dy are predicted, forming peninsulas of stability in nuclear landscape. Near these peninsulas, several multi-neutron emitters are predicted. The underlying mechanism of the peninsulas of stability is investigated by studying the total energy, Fermi surface, quadrupole deformation and the single-neutron spectrum in the canonical basis. It is found that the deformation effect is crucial for forming the peninsulas of stability, and pairing correlations are also essential in specific cases. The dependence on the deformation evolution is also discussed. The decay rates of multi-neutron radioactivity in Ba and Sm isotopic chains are estimated by using the direct decay model.

New transitions in neutron rich $^{100}$Y have been identified in a $^9$Be+$^{238}$U experiment with mass- and Z- gates to provide full fragment identification. These transitions and high spin levels of $^{100}$Y have been investigated by analyzing the high statistics $γ$-$γ$-$γ$ and $γ$-$γ$-$γ$-$γ$ coincidence data from the spontaneous fission of $^{252}$Cf at the Gammasphere detector array. Two new bands, 14 new levels and 23 new transitions have been identified. The $K^π=4^+$ new band decaying to an 1s isomeric state is assigned to be the high-$K$ Gallagher-Moszkowski (GM) partner of the known $K^π=1^+$ band, with the $π5/2[522] \otimes ν3/2[411]$ configuration. This 4$^+$ band is also proposed to be the pseudo spin partner of the new $K^π=5^+$ band with a 5$^{+}$ $π5/2[422] \otimes ν5/2[413]$ configuration, to form a $π5/2[422] \otimes ν[312$ $5/2,3/2]$ neutron pseudospin doublet. Constrained triaxial covariant density functional theory and quantal particle rotor model calculations have been applied to interpret the band structure and available electromagnetic transition probabilities and are found in good agreement with experimental values.

The configuration mixing along the rotational bands is studied by analyzing the intrinsic composition of the eigenfunctions. The chiral geometry of these nearly degenerate bands is examined by the \textit{K plot} and the \textit{azimuthal plot}, and the evolution from the chiral vibration to the static chirality with spin is clearly demonstrated for four pairs of partner bands. From the features in the \textit{azimuthal plot}, it is difficult to interpret the other candidate as chiral partners.

The calculated excited energies, energy staggering parameters, and $B(M1)/B(E2)$ ratios are in a reasonable agreement with the data of the chiral doublet bands with positive- and negative-parity. The influence of the triaxial deformation $γ$ on the calculated $B(E1)$ is found to be significant. By changing $γ$ from 16$^\circ$ to 21$^\circ$, the $B(E1)$ values will be enhanced and better agreement with the $B(E1)/B(E2)$ data is achieved. The chiral geometry based on the angular momenta for the rotor, the valence proton and valence neutron is discussed in details.

The intraband electromagnetic transitions in the framework of collective Hamiltonian for chiral and wobbling modes are calculated. By going beyond the mean field approximation on the orientations of rotational axis, the collective Hamiltonian provides the descriptions on both yrast band and collective excitation bands. For a system with one $h_{11/2}$ proton particle and one $h_{11/2}$ neutron hole coupled to a triaxial rotor ($γ=-30^\circ$), the intraband electromagnetic transitions given by the one-dimensional and two-dimensional collective Hamiltonian are compared to the results by the tilted axis cranking approach and particle rotor model. Compared with the tilted axis cranking approach, the electromagnetic transitions given by the collective Hamiltonian have a better agreement with those by the particle rotor model, due to the consideration of the quantum fluctuations.

The stability of the linear chain structure of three $α$ clusters for $^{12}$C against the bending and fission is investigated in the cranking covariant density functional theory, in which the equation of motion is solved on a 3D lattice with the inverse Hamiltonian and the Fourier spectral methods. Starting from a twisted three $α$ initial configuration, it is found that the linear chain structure is stable when the rotational frequency is within the range of $\sim$2.0 MeV to $\sim$2.5 MeV. Beyond this range, the final states are not stable against fission. By examining the density distributions and the occupation of single-particle levels, however, these fissions are found to arise from the occupation of unphysical continuum with large angular momenta. To properly remove these unphysical continuum, a dam** function for the cranking term is introduced. Eventually, the stable linear chain structure could survive up to the rotational frequency $\sim$3.5 MeV, but the fission still occurs when the rotational frequency approaches to $\sim$4.0 MeV.

The shell-model-like approach is implemented to treat the cranking many-body Hamiltonian based on the covariant density functional theory including pairing correlations with exact particle number conservation. The self-consistency is achieved by iterating the single-particle occupation probabilities back to the densities and currents. As an example, the rotational structures observed in the neutron-rich nucleus $^{60}$Fe are investigated and analyzed. Without introducing any \emph{ad hoc} parameters, the bandheads, the rotational spectra, and the relations between the angular momentum and rotational frequency for the positive parity band A, and negative parity bands B and C are well reproduced. The essential role of the pairing correlations is revealed. It is found that for band A, the bandcrossing is due to the change of the last two occupied neutrons from the $1f_{5/2}$ signature partners to the $1g_{9/2}$ signature partners. For the two negative parity signature partner bands B and C, the bandcrossings are due to the pseudo-crossing between the $1f_{7/2,~5/2}$ and the $1f_{5/2,~1/2}$ orbitals. Generally speaking, the deformation parameters $β$ for bands A, B, and C decrease with rotational frequency. For band A, the deformation jumps from $β\sim0.19$ to $β\sim0.29$ around the bandcrossing. In comparison with its signature partner band C, band B exhibits appreciable triaxial deformation.

The ground-state properties of nuclei with 8 $\le$ Z $\le$ 120 from the proton drip line to the neutron drip line have been investigated using the relativistic continuum Hartree-Bogoliubov (RCHB) theory with the relativistic density functional PC-PK1. With the effects of the continuum included, there are totally 9035 nuclei predicted to be bound, which largely extends the existing nuclear landscapes predicted with other methods. The calculated binding energies, separation energies, neutron and proton Fermi surfaces, root-mean-square (rms) radii of neutron, proton, matter, and charge distributions, ground-state spins and parities are tabulated. The extension of the nuclear landscape obtained with RCHB is discussed in detail, in particular for the neutron-rich side, in comparison with the relativistic mean field calculations without pairing correlations and also other predicted landscapes. It is found that the coupling between the bound states and the continuum due to the pairing correlations plays an essential role in extending the nuclear landscape. The systematics of the separation energies, radii, densities, potentials and pairing energies of the RCHB calculations are also discussed. In addition, the alpha-decay energies and proton emitters based on the RCHB calculations are investigated.

A new method to solve the Dirac equation on a 3D lattice is proposed, in which the variational collapse problem is avoided by the inverse Hamiltonian method and the fermion doubling problem is avoided by performing spatial derivatives in momentum space with the help of the discrete Fourier transform, i.e., the spectral method. This method is demonstrated in solving the Dirac equation for a given spherical potential in 3D lattice space. In comparison with the results obtained by the shooting method, the differences in single particle energy are smaller than $10^{-4}$~MeV, and the densities are almost identical, which demonstrates the high accuracy of the present method. The results obtained by applying this method without any modification to solve the Dirac equations for an axial deformed, non-axial deformed, and octupole deformed potential are provided and discussed.

It is confirmed that the wobbling mode in $^{135}$Pr changes from transverse to longitudinal with the rotational frequency. The mechanism of this transition is revealed by analyzing the effective moments of inertia of the three principal axes, and the corresponding variation trend of the wobbling frequency is determined by the softness and shapes of the collective potential.

A two-dimensional collective Hamiltonian (2DCH) on both azimuth and polar motions in triaxial nuclei is proposed to investigate the chiral and wobbling modes. In the 2DCH, the collective potential and the mass parameters are determined from three-dimensional tilted axis cranking (TAC) calculations. The broken chiral and signature symmetries in the TAC solutions are restored by the 2DCH. The validity of the 2DCH is illustrated with a triaxial rotor ($γ=-30^\circ$) coupling to one $h_{11/2}$ proton particle and one $h_{11/2}$ neutron hole. By diagonalizing the 2DCH, the angular momenta and energy spectra are obtained. These results agree with the exact solutions of the particle rotor model (PRM) at high rotational frequencies. However, at low frequencies, the energies given by the 2DCH are larger than those by the PRM due to the underestimation of the mass parameters. In addition, with increasing angular momentum, the transitions from the chiral vibration to chiral rotation and further to longitudinal wobbling motion have been presented in the 2DCH.

The five-dimensional collective Hamiltonian based on the covariant density functional theory is applied to investigate the observed tidal wave mode in the yrast band of $^{102}$Pd. The energy spectra, the relations between the spin and the rotational frequency, and the ratios of $B(E2)/\mathcal{J}(I)$ in the yrast band are well reproduced by introducing the empirical $ab$ formula for the moments of inertia. This $ab$ formula is related to the fourth order effect of collective momentum in the collective Hamiltonian. It is also shown that the shape evolution in the tidal wave is determined microscopically by the competition between the rotational kinetic energy and the collective potential in the framework of the collective Hamiltonian.

The observed data for Band 3 and Band 4 are reproduced well with two assigned configurations. It is found that both bands correspond to a rotation of antimagnetic character, but, due to the presence of considerable deformation, the interplay between antimag- netic rotation and collective motion plays an essential role. In particular for Band 4, collective rotation is dominant in the competition with antimagnetic rotation. Moreover, it is shown that the behavior of the ratios between the dynamic moments of inertia and the B(E2) values reflects the interplay between antimagnetic and collective rotation.

The measured energy spectrum and transition probabilities for the Nd-135 yrast band are reproduced well without any ad hoc renormalization factors when pairing effects are taken into account. A transition from collective to chiral rotation has been demonstrated. It is found that pairing correlations introduce additional admixtures in the single-particle orbitals, and, thus, influence the structure of tilted axis rotating nuclei by reducing the magnitude of the proton and neutron angular momenta while merging their direction.

The simple, longitudinal, and transverse wobblers are systematically studied within the framework of collective Hamiltonian, where the collective potential and mass parameter included are obtained based on the tilted axis cranking approach. Solving the collective Hamiltonian by diagonalization, the energies and the wave functions of the wobbling states are obtained. The obtained results are compared with those by harmonic approximation formula and particle rotor model. The wobbling energies calculated by the collective Hamiltonian are closer to the exact solutions by particle rotor model than harmonic approximation formula. It is confirmed that the wobbling frequency increases with the rotational frequency in simple and longitudinal wobbling motions while decreases in transverse wobbling motion. These variation trends are related to the stiffness of the collective potential in the collective Hamiltonian.

The properties of the observed chiral doublet bands are in good agreement with theoretical results obtained using constrained covariant density functional theory and particle rotor model calculations. Two of them belong to an identical configuration, and provide the first experimental evidence for a novel type of multiple chiral doublets, where an "excited" chiral doublet of a configuration is seen together with the "yrast" one. This observation shows that the chiral geometry in nuclei can be robust against the increase of the intrinsic excitation energy.

The simplicity in the nuclear quadrupole moments reported recently in $^{107-129}$Cd, i.e., a linear increase of the ${11/2}^-$ quadrupole moments, is investigated microscopically with the covariant density functional theory. Using the newly developed functional PC-PK1, the quadrupole moments as well as their linear increase tendency with the neutron number are excellently reproduced without any {\it ad hoc} parameters. The core polarization is found to be very important and contributes almost half of the quadrupole moments. The simplicity of the linear increase is revealed to be due to the pairing correlation which smears out the abrupt changes induced by the single-particle shell structure.

Magnetic rotation and antimagnetic rotation are exotic rotational phenomena observed in weakly deformed or near-spherical nuclei, which are respectivelyinterpreted in terms of the shears mecha-nism and two shearslike mechanism. Since their observations, magnetic rotation and antimagnetic rotation phenomena have been mainly investigated in the framework of tilted axis cranking based on the pairing plus quadrupole model. For the last decades, the covariant density functional theory and its extension have been proved to be successful in describing series of nuclear ground-states and excited states properties, including the binding energies, radii, single-particle spectra, resonance states, halo phenomena, magnetic moments, magnetic rotation, low-lying excitations, shape phase transitions, collective rotation and vibrations, etc. This review will mainly focus on the tilted axis cranking covariant density functional theory and its application for the magnetic rotation and antimagnetic rotation phenomena.

The collective Hamiltonian is constructed from the potential energy and mass parameter obtained in the tilted axis cranking approach. By diagonalizing the collective Hamiltonian with a box boundary condition, it is found that for the chiral rotation, the partner states become more degenerate with the increase of the cranking frequency, and for the chiral vibrations, their important roles for the collective excitation are revealed at the beginning of the chiral rotation region.

The octupole deformation and shape evolution in the Ra and Rn isotopes are examined in the potential energy surfaces in(beta2, beta3) plane by the constrained reflection asymmetric calculations. The residual proton-neutron interactions extracted from the double difference of the binding energies for Ra isotopes are compared with the data as well as the axial and the triaxial calculations. It is found that the octupole deformation is responsible for the Ra puzzle in the microscopic CDFT.

The evolution of the chiral geometry with angular momentum is discussed in detail by the angular momentum components and their probability distributions. Chirality is found to change from chiral vibration to nearly static chirality at spin $I=37/2$ and back to another type of chiral vibration at higher spin. The tilted angles, deformation parameters, energy spectra, and reduced M1 and $E2$ transition probabilities have been studied in a fully microscopic and self-consistent way for various configurations and rotational frequencies. It is found the competition between the configurations and the transitions from the magnetic to the electric rotations have to be considered in order to reproduce the energy spectra as well as the band crossing phenomena. The tendency of the experimental electromagnetic transition ratios B(M1)/B(E2) is in a good agreement with the data, in particular, the B(M1) values decrease with increasing spin as expected for the shears mechanism, whose characteristics are discussed in detail by investigating the various contributions to the total angular momentum as well.

A particle rotor model is developed which couples several valence protons and neutrons to a rigid triaxial rotor core. It is applied to investigating the chirality in odd-$A$ nucleus $^{135}$Nd with $πh_{11/2}^2\otimesνh^{-1}_{11/2}$ configuration for the first time in a fully quantal approach. For the two chiral sister bands, the observed energies and the $B(M1)$ and $B(E2)$ values for the in-band as well as interband transitions are reproduced excellently. Root mean square values of the angular momentum components and their probability distributions are used for discussing in detail the chiral geometry of the aplanar rotation and its evolution with angular momentum. Chirality is found to change from a soft chiral vibration to nearly static chirality at spin $I=39/2$ and back to another type of chiral vibration at higher spin.

Electromagnetic dipole absorption cross-sections of transitional nuclei with large-amplitude shape fluctuations are calculated in a microscopic way by introducing the concept of Instantaneous Shape Sampling. The concept bases on the slow shape dynamics as compared to the fast dipole vibrations. The elctromagnetic dipole strength is calculated by means of RPA for the instantaneous shapes, the probability of which is obtained by means of IBA. Very good agreement with the experimental absorption cross sections near the nucleon emission threshold is obtained.

Abstract:
A particle rotor model with a quasi-neutron coupled with a triaxially deformed rotor is applied to study signature splitting for bands with intruder orbital $\nu7/2^{+} [633]$ and non-intruder orbital $\nu5/2^{-}[512]$ in $^{173}$W. Excellent agreement with the observed energy spectra has been achieved for both bands. Signature splitting for band $\nu7/2^{+} [633]$, and band $\nu5/2^{-}[512]$ be…

Excellent agreement with the observed energy spectra has been achieved for both bands. Signature splitting for band $\nu7/2^{+} [633]$, and band $\nu5/2^{-}[512]$ before the onset of signature inversion, is satisfactorily reproduced by introducing the $γ$ degree of freedom. The phase and amplitude of signature splitting in band $\nu5/2^{-}[512]$ is attributed to strong competition between $2f_{7/2}$ and $1h_{9/2}$ components. However, the explanation of signature inversion in band $\nu5/2^{-}[512]$ self-consistently is beyond the present one quasi-neutron coupled with a triaxially deformed rotor.

A particle rotor model (PRM) with a quasi-proton and a quasi-neutron coupled with a triaxial rotor is developed and applied to study chiral doublet bands with configurations of a $h_{11/2}$ proton and a $h_{11/2}$ quasi-neutron. With pairing treated by the BCS approximation, the present quasi-particle PRM is aimed at simulating one proton and many neutron holes coupled with a triaxial rotor. After a detailed analysis of the angular momentum orientations, energy separation between the partner bands, and behavior of electromagnetic transitions, for the first time we find aplanar rotation or equivalently chiral geometry beyond the usual one proton and one neutron hole coupled with a triaxial rotor.

Abstract:
The positive parity doublet bands based on the $πh_{11/2}\otimesνh_{11/2}$ configuration in $^{126}$Cs have been investigated in the two quasi-particles coupled with a triaxial rotor model. The energy spectra $E(I)$, energy staggering parameter $S(I)=[E(I)-E(I-1)]/2I$, $B(M1)$ and $B(E2)$ values, intraband $B(M1)/B(E2)$ ratios, $B(M1)_{\textrm{in}}/B(M1)_{\textrm{out}}$ ratios, and orientation o…

After including the pairing correlation, good agreement has been obtained between the calculated results and the data available, which supports the interpretation of this positive parity doublet bands as chiral bands.

Abstract:
The criteria for chiral doublet bands based on one particle and one hole coupled to a triaxial rotor have been summarized. Two representative cases in $A\sim100$ odd-odd nuclei, nearly degenerate $ΔI =1$ doublet bands in $^{104}$Rh and $^{106}$Rh are checked against these chiral criteria. It is shown that $^{106}$Rh possesses better chiral geometry than $^{104}$Rh, although the energy near degen…

The phenomena of giant halo and halo of neutron-rich even-Ca isotopes are investigated and compared in the framework of the relativistic continuum Hartree-Bogoliubov (RCHB) and non-relativistic Skyrme Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) calculations. With two parameter sets for each of the RCHB and the Skyrme HFB calculations, it is found that although halo phenomena exist for Ca isotopes near neutron drip line in both calculations, the halo of the Skyrme HFB calculations starts at a more neutron-rich nucleus than that of the RCHB calculations, and the RCHB calculations have larger neutron root-mean-square (rms) radii systematically in N >= 40 than those of the Skyrme HFB calculations. The former difference comes from difference in shell structure. The reasons for the latter can be partly explained by the neutron 3s1/2 orbit, which causes more than 50% of the difference among the four calculations for neutron rms radii at 66Ca.
