Electron-neutrino charged-current interactions with xenon nuclei were modeled in the nEXO neutrinoless double-beta decay detector (~5-tonne, 90% ${}^{136}$Xe, 10% ${}^{134}$Xe) to evaluate its sensitivity to supernova neutrinos. Predictions for event rates and detectable signatures were modeled using the MARLEY event generator. We find good agreement between MARLEY's predictions and existing theoretical calculations of the inclusive cross sections at supernova neutrino energies. The interactions modeled by MARLEY were simulated within the nEXO simulation framework and were run through an example reconstruction algorithm to determine the detector's efficiency for reconstructing these events. The simulated data, incorporating the detector response, were used to study the ability of nEXO to reconstruct the incident electron-neutrino spectrum and these results were extended to a larger xenon detector of the same isotope enrichment. We estimate that nEXO will be able to observe electron-neutrino interactions with xenon from supernovae as far as 5 to 8 kpc from earth, while the ability to reconstruct incident electron-neutrino spectrum parameters from observed interactions in nEXO is limited to closer supernovae.

It has been a long-standing challenge to accurately predict the properties of light nuclei and nuclear matter simultaneously in nuclear $ab\ initio$ calculations. In this Letter, we develop the relativistic quantum Monte Carlo methods for the nuclear $ab\ initio$ problem, and calculate the ground-state energies of $A\leq4$ nuclei using the two-nucleon Bonn force with an unprecedented high accuracy. For $A=3,4$ nuclei, the present relativistic results significantly outperforms the nonrelativistic results with only two-nucleon forces. Combining the present results for light nuclei and the previous results for nuclear matter with the same Bonn force, a correlation between the properties of light $A\leq4$ nuclei and the nuclear saturation is revealed, and both systems are well described simultaneously, even without introducing three-nucleon forces. This provides a quantitative understanding of the connection between the light nuclei and nuclear matter saturation properties, which has been an outstanding problem in nuclear $ab\ initio$ calculations for decades.

Starting from a manifestly Lorentz-invariant chiral Lagrangian, we present a model-free prediction for the transition amplitude of the process $nn\rightarrow pp e^-e^-$ induced by light Majorana neutrinos, which is a key process of the neutrinoless double beta decay ($0νββ$) in heavy nuclei employed in large-scale searches. Contrary to the nonrelativistic case, we show that the transition amplitude can be renormalized at leading order without any uncertain contact operators. The predicted amplitude defines a stringent benchmark for the previous estimation with model-dependent inputs, and greatly reduces the uncertainty of $0νββ$ transition operator in the calculations of nuclear matrix elements. Generalizations of the present framework could also help to address the uncertainties in $0νββ$ decay induced by other mechanisms. In addition, the present work motivates a relativistic {\it ab initio} calculation of $0νββ$ decay in light and medium-mass nuclei.

A clear signal is observed with a statistical significance of $7.1σ$. The cross section of the reaction $Ξ^0+{^9\rm{Be}}\rightarrowΞ^-+p+{^8\rm{Be}}$ is determined to be $σ(Ξ^0+{^9\rm{Be}}\rightarrowΞ^-+p+{^8\rm{Be}})=(22.1\pm5.3_{\rm{stat}}\pm4.5_{\rm{sys}})$ mb at the $Ξ^0$ momentum of $0.818$ GeV/$c$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. No significant $H$-dibaryon signal is observed in the $Ξ^-p$ final state. This is the first study of hyperon-nucleon interactions in electron-positron collisions and opens up a new direction for such research.

Shape and multiple shape coexistence of nuclei are investigated throughout the nuclear chart by calculating the low-lying spectra and the quadrupole shape invariants for even-even nuclei with $10\leq Z\leq 104$ from the proton drip line to the neutron one within a five-dimensional collective Hamiltonian based on the covariant density functional PC-PK1. The quadrupole shape invariants are implemented to characterize the quadrupole deformations of low-lying $0^+$ states and predict nuclear mass regions of shape and multiple shape coexistence. The predicted low-lying spectra and the shape or multi-shape coexisting nuclei are overall in good agreement with the available experimental results. In addition, the present work predicts a wealth of nuclei with shape or multiple shape coexistence in the neutron-rich regions. The connection between the strong $E0$ transition strength and the occurrence of shape coexistence is analyzed systemically. It is found that nuclei with pronounced shape coexistence generally have strong $E0$ transition strengths, while the reverse may not be true. The present results can serve as useful guidelines for experimental searches and theoretical studies of shape and multiple shape coexistence, especially in neutron-rich regions.

Based on the leading-order covariant pionless effective field theory, a relativistic nuclear Hamiltonian is derived and solved using the variational Monte Carlo approach for $A\le 4$ nuclei by representing the nuclear many-body wave functions with a symmetry-based artificial neural network. It is found that the relativistic effects rescue the renormalizability of the theory, and overcome the energy collapse problem for $^3$H and $^4$He without promoting a repulsive three-nucleon interaction to leading order as in nonrelativistic calculations. Nevertheless, to exactly reproduce the experimental ground-state energies, a three-nucleon interaction is needed and its interplay with the relativistic effects plays a crucial role. The strongly repulsive relativistic effects suppress the energy contribution given by the three-nucleon interactions, so a strong strength for the three-nucleon interaction could be required to reproduce the experimental energies. These results shed light on a consistent understanding of relativistic effects and three-body interactions in atomic nuclei.

We study the two-point functions from chiral kinetic theory which characterize the response to perturbative vector and axial gauge fields in magnetized chiral plasma. In the lowest Landau level approximation, the solution of chiral kinetic equations gives density waves of electric and axial charges, which contain chiral magnetic wave implied by the axial anomaly and magnetic field. We then obtain the constitutive relations for covariant currents and stress tensor that involving the density waves. By considering the difference between consistent and covariant anomalies explicitly, the correlators of consistent currents and stress tensor satisfy derivative symmetry, and therefore allow an effective action for the perturbative gauge fields as the generating functional of the correlators. We also verify the derivative symmetry of the correlators agrees with the Onsager relations.

The compressibility of magnetized quark matter is investigated in the SU(2) NJL model. The increases of the chemical potential and the temperature can reduce the compressibility, and lead to the much stiffer equation of state. The variation of the compressibility with the magnetic field will depend on the phase region. Due to the anisotropic structure, the compressibility is different in the directions parallel and perpendicular to the field. The discontinuity of longitudinal compressibility with the chemical potential and the temperature captures the signature of a first-order chiral phase transition and the crossover at high temperature. Moreover, the magnetic-field-and-temperature running coupling would have an important effect on the position of the phase transition. Under the lowest landau level approximation at zero temperature, the longitudinal compressibility has a direct inverse proportional relation to the magnetic field strength and the chemical potential square as $κ^\parallel_{\mathrm{LLL},χ}\propto1/(eB μ^2)$.

The nuclear landscape has been investigated within the triaxial relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov theory with the PC-PK1 density functional, and the beyond-mean-field dynamical correlation energies are taken into account by a microscopically mapped five-dimensional collective Hamiltonian without additional free parameters. The effects of triaxial deformation and dynamical correlations on the nuclear landscape are analyzed. The present results provide the best description of the experimental binding energies, in particular for medium and heavy mass regions, in comparison with the results obtained previously with other state-of-the-art covariant density functionals. The inclusion of the dynamical correlation energies plays an important role in the PC-PK1 results. It is emphasized that the nuclear landscape is considerably extended by the PC-PK1 functional in comparison with the previous results with other density functionals, which may be due to the different isovector properties in the density functionals.

We develop covariant chiral kinetic theory with Landau level basis. We use it to investigate a magnetized plasma with a transverse electric field and a steady vorticity as perturbations. After taking into account vacuum shift in the latter case, we find the resulting current and stress tensor in both cases can be matched consistently with constitutive equations of magnetohydrodynamics. We find the solution in the vorticity case contains both shifts in temperature and chemical potential as well as excitations of the lowest Landau level states. The solution gives rise to an vector charge density and axial current density. The vacuum parts coming from both shifts and excitations agree with previous studies and the medium parts coming entirely from excitations leads to a new contribution to vector charge and axial current density consistent with standard chiral vortical effect.

We report a study of the processes of $e^+e^-\to K^+ (D_s^- D^{*0} + D^{*-}_s D^0)$ based on $e^+e^-$ annihilation samples collected with the BESIII detector operating at BEPCII at five center-of-mass energies ranging from 4.628 to 4.698 GeV with a total integrated luminosity of 3.7 fb$^{-1}$. An excess over the known contributions of the conventional charmed mesons is observed near the $D_s^- D^{*0}$ and $D^{*-}_s D^0$ mass thresholds in the $K^{+}$ recoil-mass spectrum for events collected at $\sqrt{s}=4.681$ GeV. The structure matches a mass-dependent-width Breit-Wigner line shape, whose pole mass and width are determined as $(3982.5^{+1.8}_{-2.6}\pm2.1)$ MeV/$c^2$ and $(12.8^{+5.3}_{-4.4}\pm3.0)$ MeV, respectively. The first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. The significance of the resonance hypothesis is estimated to be 5.3 $σ$ over the contributions only from the conventional charmed mesons. This is the first candidate of the charged hidden-charm tetraquark with strangeness, decaying into $D_s^- D^{*0}$ and $D^{*-}_s D^0$. However, the properties of the excess need further exploration with more statistics.

We report on a comparison between the theoretically predicted and experimentally measured spectra of the first-forbidden non-unique $β$-decay transition $^{137}\textrm{Xe}(7/2^-)\to\,^{137}\textrm{Cs}(7/2^+)$. The experimental data were acquired by the EXO-200 experiment during a deployment of an AmBe neutron source. The ultra-low background environment of EXO-200, together with dedicated source deployment and analysis procedures, allowed for collection of a pure sample of the decays, with an estimated signal-to-background ratio of more than 99-to-1 in the energy range from 1075 to 4175 keV. In addition to providing a rare and accurate measurement of the first-forbidden non-unique $β$-decay shape, this work constitutes a novel test of the calculated electron spectral shapes in the context of the reactor antineutrino anomaly and spectral bump.

We employ a new self-consistent mean field approximation of NJL model, which introduces a free parameter $α$ ($α$ reflects the weight of different interaction channels), to study the effects of the chiral chemical potential $μ_5$ on QCD phase structure, especially the location of the QCD critical end point (CEP). We find that, at a high temperature, the critical temperature of QCD phase transition smoothly increases with $μ_5$ at the beginning, and then decreases rapidly. At low temperature and high baryon density region, the increase of the chiral chemical potential will reduce the critical chemical potential of phase transition. The temperature of the CEP shows a non-monotonic dependence on the chiral chemical potential with a long plateau around the maximum. At $μ_5=0$, we found that the CEP will disappear when the $α$ value is larger than 0.71 and will reappear when the $μ_5$ increases. This study is important for exploring the QCD phase structure and the location of CEP in chiral imbalanced systems.

We derive a chiral kinetic theory with Landau level basis, which is valid for slow-varying magnetic field with arbitrary magnitude. We apply the new chiral kinetic theory to calculate the electric conductivity transverse to the magnetic field in a magnetized QED and QCD plasma. Under the lowest Landau level approximation and relaxation time approximation, we find the transverse conductivity approaches a constant in the large magnetic field limit and is inversely proportional to the relaxation time. We also obtain a frequency-dependent transverse conductivity in response to a time-dependent electric field. We find a high frequency enhancement in this conductivity.

We study coefficients of axial chiral vortical effect and chiral separation effect at finite temperature and vector chemical potential in massive theories. We present two independent methods of calculating the coefficients: one from field theory and the other using the mass term in axial anomaly equation. An ambiguity in the integration constant similar to hydrodynamic approach to axial chiral vortical effect exists in the latter, but can be fixed naturally in the presence of mass. We obtain perfect agreement between the methods. The results of axial chiral vortical effect and chiral separation effect indicate that the presence of mass generically suppresses the two coefficients, with less suppression at larger chemical potential. For phenomenologically relevant case of quark gluon plasma with three quark flavor, we find the correction is negligible.

We show that in the low $p_{\rm{T}}$ region with $p_{\rm T} \leq$ 2.75 (3.10 and 2.35) GeV/c the pion (kaon and proton) spectra exhibit a scaling behaviour independent of the centrality of the collisions. This scaling behaviour arises when these spectra are presented in terms of a suitable variable, $z=p_{\rm{T}}/K$. The scaling parameter $K$ is determined by the quality factor method and is parameterized by $a \langle N_{\rm{part}}\rangle^{b}$, where $\langle N_{\rm{part}}\rangle$ is the average value of the number of participating nucleons, $a$ and $b$ are free parameters, $b$ characterizes the rate at which $\textrm{ln} K$ changes with $\textrm{ln} \langle N_{\rm{part}}\rangle$. The values of $b$ for pions and kaons are consistent within uncertainties, while they are smaller than that for protons. In the high $p_{\rm{T}}$ region, due to the suppression of the spectra, a violation of the proposed scaling is observed going from central to peripheral collisions. The more peripheral the collisions are, the more clearly violated the proposed scaling becomes. In the framework of the colour string percolation model, we argue that the pions, kaons and protons originate from the fragmentation of clusters which are formed by strings overlap** and the cluster's fragmentation functions are different for different hadrons. The scaling behaviour of the pion, kaon and proton spectra in the low $p_{\rm T}$ region can be simultaneously explained by the colour string percolation model in a qualitative way.

Detailed investigations on the notch technique are performed on the ideal data generated by the optical model potential parameters extracted from the 16O+208Pb system at the laboratory energy of 129.5 MeV, to study the sensitivities of this technique on the model parameters as well as the experimental data. It is found that, for the perturbation parameters, a sufficient large reduced fraction and an appropriate small perturbation width are necessary to determine the accurate radial sensitivity; while for the potential parameters, almost no dependence was observed. For the experimental measurements, the number of data points has little influence for the heavy target system, and the relative inner information of the nuclear potential can be derived when the measurement extended to a lower cross section.

We present a new idea to understand the structure of nuclei, which is comparing to the liquid drop model. After discussing the probability that the nuclear system may be a fractal object with the characteristic of self-similarity, the nuclear irregular structure properties and the self-similarity characteristic are considered to be an intrinsic aspects of nuclear structure properties. For the description of nuclear geometric properties, nuclear fractal dimension is an irreplaceable variable similar to the nuclear radius. In order to determine these two variables, a new nuclear potential energy formula which is related to the fractal dimension is put forward and the phenomenological semi-empirical Bethe-Weizsacker binding energy formula is modified using the fractal geometric theory. And one important equation set with two equations is obtained, which is related to the conception that the fractal dimension should be a dynamical parameter in the process of nuclear synthesis. The fractal dimensions of the light nuclei are calculated and their physical meanings are discussed. We have compared the nuclear fractal mean density radii with the radii calculated by the liquid drop model for the light stable and unstable nuclei using rational nuclear fractal structure types. In the present model of fractal nuclear structure there is an obvious feature comparing to the liquid drop model, since the present model can reflect the geometric informations of the nuclear structure, especially for the nuclei with clusters, such as the α-cluster nuclei and halo nuclei.

The liquid-gas phase transition in strange hadronic matter is studied utilizing an extended Furnstahl-Serot-Tang model with nucleons and hyperons. The system is treated as of two components. The phase transition is analyzed by investigating the stability of the system and Gibbs conditions for phase equilibrium. A two-dimensional binodal surface resulted from the two-phase equilibrium, namely the phase boundary, is obtained. For each temperature ranging from T = 8 MeV to T = 12 MeV, a limit pressure on the binodal surface section is found, while a critical point is spotted for the temperature around T = 13 MeV. The Maxwell constructions are also illustrated to give a vivid description of the course of the phase transition. Moreover, the entropy per baryon and heat capacity per baryon as functions of temperature are examined. The entropy is continuous during the phase transition but the heat capacity is discontinuous, indicating that the phase transition is of second order. By these efforts, the L-G phase transition can be concluded to exist in the strange hadronic matter.
