Self-consistent strong plasma screening around light nuclei is implemented in the Big Bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) epoch to determine the short-range screening potential, $eφ(r)/T \geq 1$, relevant for thermonuclear reactions. We numerically solve the non-linear Poisson-Boltzmann equation incorporating Fermi-Dirac statistics adopting a generalized screening mass to find the electric potential in the cosmic BBN electron-positron plasma for finite-sized $^4$He nuclei as an example. Although the plasma follows Boltzmann statistics at large distances, Fermi-Dirac statistics is necessary when work performed by ions on electrons is comparable to their rest mass energy. While strong screening effects are generally minor due to the high BBN temperatures, they can enhance the fusion rates of high-$Z>2$ elements while leaving fusion rates of lower-$Z\le 2$ elements relatively unaffected. Our results also reveal a pronounced spatial dependence of the strong screening potential near the nuclear surface. These findings about the electron-positron plasma's role refine BBN theory predictions and offer broader applications for studying weakly coupled plasmas in diverse cosmic and laboratory settings.

We characterize in a novel manner the physical properties of the low temperature Fermi gas in the degenerate domain as a function of temperature and chemical potential. For the first time we obtain low temperature $T$ results in the domain where several fermions are found within a de Broglie spatial cell. In this regime, the usual high degeneracy Sommerfeld expansion fails. The other known semi-classical Boltzmann domain applies when fewer than one particle is found in the de Broglie cell. We also improve on the understanding of the Sommerfeld expansion in the regime where the chemical potential is close to the mass and also in the high temperature regime. In these calculcations we use a novel characterization of the Fermi distribution allowing the separation of the finite and zero temperature phenomena. The relative errors of the three approximate methods (Boltzmann limit, Sommerfeld expansion, and the new domain of several particles in the de Broglie cell) are quantified.

We have applied thermodynamic stability analysis to derive the stability and causality conditions for conventional relativistic viscous hydrodynamics and spin hydrodynamics. We obtain the thermodynamic stability conditions for second-order relativistic hydrodynamics with shear and bulk viscous tensors, finding them identical to those derived from linear mode analysis. We then derive the thermodynamic stability conditions for minimal causal extended second-order spin hydrodynamics in canonical form, both with and without viscous tensors. Without viscous tensors, the constraints from thermodynamic stability exactly match those from linear mode analysis. In the presence of viscous tensors, the thermodynamic stability imposes more stringent constraints than those obtained from linear mode analysis. Our results suggest that conditions derived from thermodynamic stability analysis can guarantee both causality and stability in linear mode analysis.

We investigate theoretically the possibility of achieving the stimulated amplification of $γ$-rays. Herein, our approach circumvents the so-called ``graser dilemma" through a non-linear, multi-photon mechanism. Our work foresees the combination of a high-intensity $γ-$flash generated by the interaction of a high-intensity laser pulse with plasma and intensive photons supplied by an additional laser. We show that multi-photon stimulated emission processes can have a larger effective cross-section compared to a one-photon process. The bandwidth of the supplied photons can also be tuned to curtail linewidth broadening. Naturally, Mossbauer transitions can be chosen to apply the scheme in the first instance. Furthermore, we derive that even multi-photon stimulated emission in the form of an anti-Stokes type could allow our scheme to be applied to non-Mossbauer nuclei, provided that the supplied photon energy can be tuned to compensate for the recoil and other broadening induced losses. The graser development can be spearheaded using multi-PW class high-power laser systems such as the 10 PW installation at Extreme Light Infrastructure - Nuclear Physics (ELI-NP) in Romania.

We propose a novel scheme for the population and depletion of nuclear isomers. The scheme combines the $γ$-photons with energies $\gtrsim 10$ keV emitted during the interaction of a contemporary high-intensity laser pulse with a plasma and one or multiple photon beams supplied by intense lasers. Due to nonlinear effects, two- or multi-photon absorption dominates over the conventional multi-step one-photon process for an optimized gamma flash. Moreover, this nonlinear effect can be greatly enhanced with the help of externally supplied photons. These photons act such that the effective cross-section experienced by the $γ$-photons becomes tunable, growing with the intensity $I_0$ of the beam. Assuming $I_{0}\sim 10^{18}$ Wcm$^{-2}$ for the photon beam, an effective cross-section as large as $10^{-21}$ cm$^2$ to $10^{-28}$ cm$^2$ for the $γ-$photon can be achieved. Thus, within state-of-the-art 10 PW laser facilities, the yields from two-photon absorption can reach $10^6$ to $10^9$ isomers per shot for selected states that are separated from their ground state by E2 transitions. Similar yields for transitions with higher multipolarities can be accommodated by multi-photon absorption with additional photons provided.

We present an efficient quantum circuit for block encoding pairing Hamiltonian often studied in nuclear physics. Our block encoding scheme does not require map** the creation and annihilation operators to the Pauli operators and representing the Hamiltonian as a linear combination of unitaries. Instead, we show how to encode the Hamiltonian directly using controlled swap operations. We analyze the gate complexity of the block encoding circuit and show that it scales polynomially with respect to the number of qubits required to represent a quantum state associated with the pairing Hamiltonian. We also show how the block encoding circuit can be combined with the quantum singular value transformation to construct an efficient quantum circuit for approximating the density of states of a pairing Hamiltonian. The techniques presented can be extended to encode more general second-quantized Hamiltonians.

The internuclear electromagnetic screened potential is obtained (analytically) using the linear response approach, allowing for the dynamic motion of the electromagnetic field sources and the dam** effects due to plasma component scattering. We discuss the limits of the linear response method and suggest additional work needed to improve BBN reaction rates in the primordial Universe. Our theoretical methods to describe the potential between charged dust particles align with previous studies on planetary and space dusty plasma and could have significant impact on interpretation of standard cosmological model results.

We perform the linear analysis of causality and stability for a minimal extended spin hydrodynamics up to second order of the gradient expansion. The first order spin hydrodynamics, with a rank-3 spin tensor being antisymmetric for only the last two indices, are proved to be acausal and unstable. We then consider the minimal causal spin hydrodynamics up to second order of the gradient expansion. We derive the necessary causality and stability conditions for this minimal causal spin hydrodynamics. Interestingly, the satisfaction of the stability conditions relies on the equations of state for the spin density and chemical potentials. Moreover, different with the conventional relativistic dissipative hydrodynamics, the stability of the theory seems to be broken at the finite wave-vector when the stability conditions are fulfilled at small and large wave-vector limits. It implies that the behavior in small and large wave-vector limits may be insufficient to determine the stability conditions for spin hydrodynamics in linear mode analysis.

The generalized Kadanoff-Baym ansatz (GKBA) is an approximation to the Kadanoff-Baym equations (KBE), that neglects certain memory effects that contribute to the Green's function at non-equal times. Here we present arguments and numerical results to demonstrate the practical insignificance of the quantities neglected when deriving the GKBA at conditions at which KBE and GKBA are appropriate. We provide a mathematical proof that places a scaling bound on the neglected terms, further reinforcing that these terms are typically small in comparison to terms that are kept in the GKBA. We perform calculations in a range of models, including different system sizes and filling fractions, as well as experimentally relevant non-equilibrium excitations. We find that both the GKBA and KBE capture the dynamics of interacting systems with moderate and even strong interactions well. We explicitly compute terms neglected in the GKBA approximation and show, in the scenarios tested here, that they are orders of magnitude smaller than the terms that are accounted for, i.e., they offer only a small correction when included in the full Kadanoff-Baym equations.

We report a measurement of cumulants and correlation functions of event-by-event proton multiplicity distributions from fixed-target Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 3 GeV measured by the STAR experiment. Protons are identified within the rapidity ($y$) and transverse momentum ($p_{\rm T}$) region $-0.9 < y<0$ and $0.4 < p_{\rm T} <2.0 $ GeV/$c$ in the center-of-mass frame. A systematic analysis of the proton cumulants and correlation functions up to sixth-order as well as the corresponding ratios as a function of the collision centrality, $p_{\rm T}$, and $y$ are presented. The effect of pileup and initial volume fluctuations on these observables and the respective corrections are discussed in detail. The results are compared to calculations from the hadronic transport UrQMD model as well as a hydrodynamic model. In the most central 5\% collisions, the value of proton cumulant ratio $C_4/C_2$ is negative, drastically different from the values observed in Au+Au collisions at higher energies. Compared to model calculations including Lattice QCD, a hadronic transport model, and a hydrodynamic model, the strong suppression in the ratio of $C_4/C_2$ at 3 GeV Au+Au collisions indicates an energy regime dominated by hadronic interactions.

The nuclear compound yield ratio ($\mathrm{N}_t \times \mathrm{N}_p/\mathrm{N}_d^2$), which is predicted to be sensitive to the fluctuation of local neutron density, is observed to decrease monotonically with increasing charged-particle multiplicity ($dN_{ch}/dη$) and follows a scaling behavior. The $dN_{ch}/dη$ dependence of the yield ratio is compared to calculations from coalescence and thermal models. Enhancements in the yield ratios relative to the coalescence baseline are observed in the 0\%-10\% most central collisions at 19.6 and 27 GeV, with a significance of 2.3$σ$ and 3.4$σ$, respectively, giving a combined significance of 4.1$σ$. The enhancements are not observed in peripheral collisions or model calculations without critical fluctuation, and decreases with a smaller $p_{T}$ acceptance. The physics implications of these results on the QCD phase structure and the production mechanism of light nuclei in heavy-ion collisions are discussed.

A decisive experimental test of the Chiral Magnetic Effect (CME) is considered one of the major scientific goals at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC) towards understanding the nontrivial topological fluctuations of the Quantum Chromodynamics vacuum. In heavy-ion collisions, the CME is expected to result in a charge separation phenomenon across the reaction plane, whose strength could be strongly energy dependent. The previous CME searches have been focused on top RHIC energy collisions. In this Letter, we present a low energy search for the CME in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{\rm{NN}}}}=27$ GeV. We measure elliptic flow scaled charge-dependent correlators relative to the event planes that are defined at both mid-rapidity $|η|<1.0$ and at forward rapidity $2.1 < |η|<5.1$. We compare the results based on the directed flow plane ($Ψ_1$) at forward rapidity and the elliptic flow plane ($Ψ_2$) at both central and forward rapidity. The CME scenario is expected to result in a larger correlation relative to $Ψ_1$ than to $Ψ_2$, while a flow driven background scenario would lead to a consistent result for both event planes. In 10-50\% centrality, results using three different event planes are found to be consistent within experimental uncertainties, suggesting a flow driven background scenario dominating the measurement. We obtain an upper limit on the deviation from a flow driven background scenario at the 95\% confidence level. This work opens up a possible road map towards future CME search with the high statistics data from the RHIC Beam Energy Scan Phase-II.

The evolution of tilted energy density, pressure gradient and radial flow along the $x$-direction are systematically investigated. Counter-clockwise tilt of initial fireball is shown to be a vital source of the directed flow for final light hadrons. A good description of directed flow is provided for light hadrons in central and mid-central Au+Au and isobar collisions at RHIC. Our numerical results show a clear system size dependence for light hadron $v_{1}$ across different collision systems. In the 0-60% centrality class, the nuclear modification factors ($R_{\mathrm{AA}}$), which quantify the level of yield suppression in heavy-ion collisions compared to $p$+$p$ collisions, for $Υ$(1S) and $Υ$(2S) are $0.40 \pm 0.03~\textrm{(stat.)} \pm 0.03~\textrm{(sys.)} \pm 0.09~\textrm{(norm.)}$ and $0.26 \pm 0.08~\textrm{(stat.)} \pm 0.02~\textrm{(sys.)} \pm 0.06~\textrm{(norm.)}$, respectively, while the upper limit of the $Υ$(3S) $R_{\mathrm{AA}}$ is 0.17 at a 95% confidence level. This provides experimental evidence that the $Υ$(3S) is significantly more suppressed than the $Υ$(1S) at RHIC. The level of suppression for $Υ$(1S) is comparable to that observed at the much higher collision energy at the Large Hadron Collider. These results point to the creation of a medium at RHIC whose temperature is sufficiently high to strongly suppress excited $Υ$ states.

The collision energy dependence of the cross section and the transverse momentum distribution of dielectrons from the Breit-Wheeler process in heavy-ion collisions are computed in the lowest-order QED and found to be sensitive to the nuclear charge distribution and the infrared-divergence of the ultra-Lorentz boosted Coulomb field. Within a given experimental kinematic acceptance, the cross section is found to increase while the pair transverse momentum ($\sqrt{\langle p_{T}^{2} \rangle}$) decreases with increasing beam energy. We demonstrate that the transverse-momentum component of Weizsacker-Williams photons is due to the finite extent of the charge source and electric field component in the longitudinal direction. We further clarify the connection between the nuclear charge distribution and the kinematics of produced $e^+e^-$ from the Breit-Wheeler process, and propose a criterion for the validity of the Breit-Wheeler process in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Following this approach we demonstrate that the experimental measurements of the Breit-Wheeler process in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions can be used to quantitatively constrain the nuclear charge radius. The extracted parameters show sensitivity to the impact parameter dependence, and can be used to study the initial-state and final-state effects in hadronic interactions.

A linearly polarized photon can be quantized from the Lorentz-boosted electromagnetic field of a nucleus traveling at ultra-relativistic speed. When two relativistic heavy nuclei pass one another at a distance of a few nuclear radii, the photon from one nucleus may interact through a virtual quark-antiquark pair with gluons from the other nucleus forming a short-lived vector meson (e.g. ${ρ^0}$). In this experiment, the polarization was utilized in diffractive photoproduction to observe a unique spin interference pattern in the angular distribution of ${ρ^0\rightarrowπ^+π^-}$ decays. The observed interference is a result of an overlap of two wave functions at a distance an order of magnitude larger than the ${ρ^0}$ travel distance within its lifetime. The strong-interaction nuclear radii were extracted from these diffractive interactions, and found to be $6.53\pm 0.06$ fm ($^{197} {\rm Au }$) and $7.29\pm 0.08$ fm ($^{238} {\rm U}$), larger than the nuclear charge radii. The observable is demonstrated to be sensitive to the nuclear geometry and quantum interference of non-identical particles.

Heavy quarks are valuable probes of the electromagnetic field and the initial condition of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) matter produced in high-energy nuclear collisions. Within an improved Langevin model that is coupled to a (3+1)-dimensional viscous hydrodynamic model, we explore the origin of the directed flow coefficient ($v_1$) of heavy mesons and their decay leptons, and its splitting ($Δv_{1}$) between opposite charges. We find that while the rapidity dependence of the heavy flavor $v_1$ is mainly driven by the titled energy density profile of the QGP with respect to the longitudinal direction at the RHIC energy, it is dominated by the electromagnetic field at the LHC energy. The $Δv_{1}$ serves as a novel probe of the spacetime evolution profile of the electromagnetic field. Our results of $D$ mesons and their decay electrons are consistent with the available data at RHIC and LHC, and our predictions on the heavy flavor decay muons can be further tested by future measurements.

We study the origin of the directed flow of charged particles produced in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Three different initial conditions, Boz$\dot{\textrm{e}}$k-Wyskiel, CCNU and Shen-Alzhrani, of energy density distributions are coupled to the (3+1)-dimensional viscous hydrodynamic model CLVisc, and their effects on the development of the anisotropic medium geometry, pressure gradient and radial flow are systematically compared. By comparing to experimental data at both RHIC and LHC, we find that the directed flow provides a unique constraint on the tilt of the initial medium profile in the plane spanned by the impact parameter and space-time rapidity. Within mid-rapidity, the counter-clockwise tilt is shown to be a crucial source of the positive/negative force by the pressure gradient along the impact parameter ($x$) direction at backward/forward rapidity, which drives a negative slope of the $x$ component of the medium flow velocity with respect to rapidity, and in the end the same feature of the charged particle directed flow.

Hadron spectral functions carry all the information of hadrons and are encoded in the Euclidean two-point correlation functions. The extraction of hadron spectral functions from the correlator is a typical ill-posed inverse problem and infinite number of solutions to this problem exists. We propose a novel neural network (sVAE) based on the Variation Auto-Encoder (VAE) and Bayesian theorem. Inspired by the maximum entropy method (MEM) we construct the loss function of the neural work such that it includes a Shannon-Jaynes entropy term and a likelihood term. The sVAE is then trained to provide the most probable spectral functions. For the training samples of spectral function we used general spectral functions produced from the Gaussian Mixture Model. After the training is done we performed the mock data tests with input spectral functions consisting 1) only a free continuum, 2) only a resonance peak, 3) a resonance peak plus a free continuum and 4) a NRQCD motivated spectral function. From the mock data test we find that the sVAE in most cases is comparable to the maximum entropy method in the quality of reconstructing spectral functions and even outperforms the MEM in the case where the spectral function has sharp peaks with insufficient number of data points in the correlator. By applying to temporal correlation functions of charmonium in the pseudoscalar channel obtained in the quenched lattice QCD at 0.75 $T_c$ on $128^3\times96$ lattices and $1.5$ $T_c$ on $128^3\times48$ lattices, we find that the resonance peak of $η_c$ extracted from both the sVAE and MEM has a substantial dependence on the number of points in the temporal direction ($N_τ$) adopted in the lattice simulation and $N_τ$ larger than 48 is needed to resolve the fate of $η_c$ at 1.5 $T_c$.

The observed suppression of back-to-back pairs as a function of transverse momentum suggests nonlinear gluon dynamics arising at high parton densities. The larger suppression found in $p+$Au relative to $p+$Al collisions exhibits a dependence of the saturation scale, $Q_s^2$, on the mass number, $A$. A linear scaling of the suppression with $A^{1/3}$ is observed with a slope of $-0.09$ $\pm$ $0.01$.

This longitudinal tilted initial condition combined with the Ideal-CLVisc (3 + 1)D hydrodynamic model, a nonvanishing directed flow coefficient $v_{1}$ in a wide rapidity range is observed. After comparing the model's results with experimentally observed data of directed flow coefficient $v_{1}(η)$ from $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV Cu + Cu, Au + Au collisions at RHIC energy to $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 2.76 TeV and $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV Pb + Pb collisions at the LHC energy. We find that the directed flow measurements in heavy-ion collisions can set strong constraints on the imbalance of forward and backward incoming nuclei and on the magnitude asymmetry of pressure gradients along the $x$ direction.

We study the inverse problem of reconstructing spectral functions from Euclidean correlation functions via machine learning. We propose a novel neural network, SVAE, which is based on the variational autoencoder (VAE) and can be naturally applied to the inverse problem. The prominent feature of the SVAE is that a Shannon-Jaynes entropy term having the ground truth values of spectral functions as prior information is included in the loss function to be minimized. We train the network with general spectral functions produced from a Gaussian mixture model. As a test, we use correlators generated from four different types of physically motivated spectral functions made of one resonance peak, a continuum term and perturbative spectral function obtained using non-relativistic QCD. From the mock data test we find that the SVAE in most cases is comparable to the maximum entropy method (MEM) in the quality of reconstructing spectral functions and even outperforms the MEM in the case where the spectral function has sharp peaks with insufficient number of data points in the correlator. We find that this promotion enables the first realistic description of the $^{16}$O ground state based on a renormalization-group-invariant LO interaction. We also performed coupled-cluster calculations of the equation of state for symmetric nuclear matter and our results indicate that LO four-nucleon forces could play a crucial role for describing heavy-mass nuclei. The enhancement mechanism we found is very general and could be important also in other many-body problems.

Understanding gluon density distributions and how they are modified in nuclei are among the most important goals in nuclear physics. In recent years, diffractive vector meson production measured in ultra-peripheral collisions (UPCs) at heavy-ion colliders has provided a new tool for probing the gluon density. In this Letter, we report the first measurement of $J/ψ$ photoproduction off the deuteron in UPCs at the center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s_{_{\rm NN}}}=200~\rm GeV$ in d$+$Au collisions. The differential cross section as a function of momentum transfer $-t$ is measured. In addition, data with a neutron tagged in the deuteron-going Zero-Degree Calorimeter is investigated for the first time, which is found to be consistent with the expectation of incoherent diffractive scattering at low momentum transfer. Theoretical predictions based on the Color Glass Condensate saturation model and the gluon shadowing model are compared with the data quantitatively. A better agreement with the saturation model has been observed. With the current measurement, the results are found to be directly sensitive to the gluon density distribution of the deuteron and the deuteron breakup, which provides insights into the nuclear gluonic structure.

To accelerate the solution of large eigenvalue problems arising from many-body calculations in nuclear physics on distributed-memory parallel systems equipped with general-purpose Graphic Processing Units (GPUs), we modified a previously developed hybrid MPI/OpenMP implementation of an eigensolver written in FORTRAN 90 by using an OpenACC directives based programming model. Such an approach requires making minimal changes to the original code and enables a smooth migration of large-scale nuclear structure simulations from a distributed-memory many-core CPU system to a distributed GPU system. However, in order to make the OpenACC based eigensolver run efficiently on GPUs, we need to take into account the architectural differences between a many-core CPU and a GPU device. Consequently, the optimal way to insert OpenACC directives may be different from the original way of inserting OpenMP directives. We point out these differences in the implementation of sparse matrix-matrix multiplications (SpMM), which constitutes the main cost of the eigensolver, as well as other differences in the preconditioning step and dense linear algebra operations. We compare the performance of the OpenACC based implementation executed on multiple GPUs with the performance on distributed-memory many-core CPUs, and demonstrate significant speedup achieved on GPUs compared to the on-node performance of a many-core CPU. We also show that the overall performance improvement of the eigensolver on multiple GPUs is more modest due to the communication overhead among different MPI ranks.

Experimental manifestation of the CME involves a separation of positively and negatively charged hadrons along the direction of the magnetic field. Previous measurements of the CME-sensitive charge-separation observables remain inconclusive because of large background contributions. In order to better control the influence of signal and backgrounds, the STAR Collaboration performed a blind analysis of a large data sample of approximately 3.8 billion isobar collisions of $^{96}_{44}$Ru+$^{96}_{44}$Ru and $^{96}_{40}$Zr+$^{96}_{40}$Zr at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=200$ GeV. Prior to the blind analysis, the CME signatures are predefined as a significant excess of the CME-sensitive observables in Ru+Ru collisions over those in Zr+Zr collisions, owing to a larger magnetic field in the former. A precision down to 0.4% is achieved, as anticipated, in the relative magnitudes of the pertinent observables between the two isobar systems. Observed differences in the multiplicity and flow harmonics at the matching centrality indicate that the magnitude of the CME background is different between the two species. No CME signature that satisfies the predefined criteria has been observed in isobar collisions in this blind analysis.

The chiral magnetic effect (CME) refers to charge separation along a strong magnetic field due to imbalanced chirality of quarks in local parity and charge-parity violating domains in quantum chromodynamics. The experimental measurement of the charge separation is made difficult by the presence of a major background from elliptic azimuthal anisotropy. This background and the CME signal have different sensitivities to the spectator and participant planes, and could thus be determined by measurements with respect to these planes. We report such measurements in Au+Au collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 200 GeV at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider. It is found that the charge separation, with the flow background removed, is consistent with zero in peripheral (large impact parameter) collisions. Some indication of finite CME signals is seen in mid-central (intermediate impact parameter) collisions. Significant residual background effects may, however, still be present.

The dependence on collision centrality and kinematic acceptance in ($p_{T}$, $y$) are analyzed. While for 27 and 54.4 GeV collisions the $C_{6}/C_{2}$ values are close to zero within uncertainties, it is observed that for 200 GeV collisions, the $C_{6}/C_{2}$ ratio becomes progressively negative from peripheral to central collisions. Transport model calculations without critical dynamics predict mostly positive values except for the most central collisions within uncertainties. These observations seem to favor a smooth crossover in the high energy nuclear collisions at top RHIC energy.

Muon abundance is required for the understanding of several fundamental questions regarding properties of the primordial Universe. In this paper we evaluate the production and decay rates of muons in the cosmic plasma as a function of temperature. This allows us to determine when exactly the muon abundance disappears. When the Universe cools below the temperature $kT_\mathrm{disappear}\approx 4.135$ MeV the muon decay rate overwhelms production rates and muons vanish quasi-instantaneously from the Universe. Interestingly, we show that at $T_\mathrm{disappear}$ the muon number is nearly equal to baryon abundance.

The $C_{n}$ and $κ_n$ are presented as a function of collision energy, centrality and kinematic acceptance in rapidity, $y$, and transverse momentum, $p_{T}$. The data were taken during the first phase of the Beam Energy Scan (BES) program (2010 -- 2017) at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) facility. The measurements are carried out at midrapidity ($|y| <$ 0.5) and transverse momentum 0.4 $<$ $p_{\rm T}$ $<$ 2.0 GeV/$c$, using the STAR detector at RHIC. We observe a non-monotonic energy dependence ($\sqrt{s_{\mathrm {NN}}}$ = 7.7 -- 62.4 GeV) of the net-proton $C_{4}$/$C_{2}$ with the significance of 3.1$σ$ for the 0-5\% central Au+Au collisions. This is consistent with the expectations of critical fluctuations in a QCD-inspired model. Thermal and transport model calculations show a monotonic variation with $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm {NN}}}$. For the multiparticle correlation functions, we observe significant negative values for a two-particle correlation function, $κ_2$, of protons and antiprotons, which are mainly due to the effects of baryon number conservation. Furthermore, it is found that the four-particle correlation function, $κ_4$, of protons plays a role in determining the energy dependence of proton $C_4/C_1$ below 19.6 GeV, which cannot be understood by the effect of baryon number conservation.

Chiral effective field theory ($χ$EFT), as originally proposed by Weinberg, promises a theoretical connection between low-energy nuclear interactions and quantum chromodynamics (QCD). However, the important property of renormalization-group (RG) invariance is not fulfilled in current implementations and its consequences for predicting atomic nuclei beyond two- and three-nucleon systems has remained unknown. In this work we present a first and systematic study of recent RG-invariant formulations of $χ$EFT and their predictions for the binding energies and other observables of selected nuclear systems with mass-numbers up to $A =16$. Specifically, we have carried out ab initio no-core shell-model and coupled cluster calculations of the ground-state energy of $^3$H, $^{3,4}$He, $^{6}$Li, and $^{16}$O using several recent power-counting (PC) schemes at leading order (LO) and next-to-leading order (NLO), where the subleading interactions are treated in perturbation theory. Our calculations indicate that RG-invariant and realistic predictions can be obtained for nuclei with mass number $A \leq 4$. We find, however, that $^{16}$O is either unbound with respect to the four $α$-particle threshold, or deformed, or both. Similarly, we find that the $^{6}$Li ground-state resides above the $α$-deuteron separation threshold. These results are in stark contrast with experimental data and point to either necessary fine-tuning of all relevant counterterms, or that current state-of-the-art RG-invariant PC schemes at LO in $χ$EFT lack necessary diagrams -- such as three-nucleon forces -- to realistically describe nuclei with mass number $A>4$.

We illustrate a step towards the construction of a power counting in energy-density-functional (EDF) theories, by analyzing the equations of state (EOSs) of both symmetric and neutron matter. Within the adopted strategy, next-to-leading order (NLO) EOSs are introduced which contain renormalized first-order-type terms and an explicit second-order finite part. Employing as a guide the asymptotic behavior of the introduced renormalized parameters, we focus our analysis on two aspects: (i) With a minimum number of counterterms introduced at NLO, we show that each energy contribution entering in the EOS has a regular evolution with respect to the momentum cutoff (introduced in the adopted regularization procedure) and is found to converge to a cutoff-independent curve. The convergence features of each term are related to its Fermi-momentum dependence. (ii) We find that the asymptotic evolution of the second-order finite-part coefficients is a strong indication of a perturbative behavior, which in turns confirms that the adopted strategy is coherent with a possible underlying power counting in the chosen Skyrme-inspired EDF framework.

Quark interactions with topological gluon configurations can induce local chirality imbalance and parity violation in quantum chromodynamics, which can lead to the chiral magnetic effect (CME) -- an electric charge separation along the strong magnetic field in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. The CME-sensitive azimuthal correlator observable ($Δγ$) is contaminated by background arising, in part, from resonance decays coupled with elliptic anisotropy ($v_{2}$). We report here differential measurements of the correlator as a function of the pair invariant mass ($m_{\rm inv}$) in 20-50\% centrality Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{\rm NN}}}$= 200 GeV by the STAR experiment at RHIC. Strong resonance background contributions to $Δγ$ are observed. At large $m_{\rm inv}$ where this background is significantly reduced, the $Δγ$ value is found to be significantly smaller. An event-shape-engineering technique is deployed to determine the $v_{2}$ background shape as a function of $m_{\rm inv}$. We extract a $v_2$-independent and $m_{\rm inv}$-averaged signal $Δγ_{\rm sig}$ = (0.03 $\pm$ 0.06 $\pm$ 0.08) $\times10^{-4}$, or $(2\pm4\pm5)\%$ of the inclusive $Δγ(m_{\rm inv}>0.4$ GeV/$c^2$)$ =(1.58 \pm 0.02 \pm 0.02) \times10^{-4}$, within pion $p_{T}$ = 0.2 - 0.8~\gevc and averaged over pseudorapidity ranges of $-1 < η< -0.05$ and $0.05 < η< 1$. This represents an upper limit of $0.23\times10^{-4}$, or $15\%$ of the inclusive result, at $95\%$ confidence level for the $m_{\rm inv}$-integrated CME contribution.

The solutions of relativistic viscous hydrodynamics for longitudinal expanding fireballs is investigated with the Navier-Stokes theory and Israel-Stewart theory. The energy and Euler conservation equations for the viscous fluid are derived in Rindler coordinates with the longitudinal expansion effect is small. Under the perturbation assumption, an analytical perturbation solution for the Navier-Stokes approximation and numerical solutions for the Israel-Stewart approximation are presented. The temperature evolution with both shear viscous effect and longitudinal acceleration effect in the longitudinal expanding framework are presented and specifically temperature profile shows symmetry Gaussian shape in the Rindler coordinates. In addition, in the presence of the longitudinal acceleration expanding effect, the results of the Israel-Stewart approximation are compared to the results from Bjorken and Navier-Stokes approximation, and it gives a good description than the Navier-Stokes theories results at the early stages of evolution.

The measurements of particle multiplicity distributions have generated considerable interest in understanding the fluctuations of conserved quantum numbers in the Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) hadronization regime, in particular near a possible critical point and near the chemical freeze-out. We report the measurement of efficiency and centrality bin width corrected cumulant ratios ($C_{2}/C_{1}$, $C_{3}/C_{2}$) of net-$Λ$ distributions, in the context of both strangeness and baryon number conservation, as a function of collision energy, centrality and rapidity. The results are for Au + Au collisions at five beam energies ($\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 19.6, 27, 39, 62.4 and 200 GeV) recorded with the Solenoidal Tracker at RHIC (STAR). We compare our results to the Poisson and negative binomial (NBD) expectations, as well as to Ultra-relativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamics (UrQMD) and Hadron Resonance Gas (HRG) model predictions. Both NBD and Poisson baselines agree with data within the statistical and systematic uncertainties. The ratios of the measured cumulants show no features of critical fluctuations. The chemical freeze-out temperatures extracted from a recent HRG calculation, which was successfully used to describe the net-proton, net-kaon and net-charge data, indicate $Λ$ freeze-out conditions similar to those of kaons. However, large deviations are found when comparing to temperatures obtained from net-proton fluctuations. The net-$Λ$ cumulants show a weak, but finite, dependence on the rapidity coverage in the acceptance of the detector, which can be attributed to quantum number conservation.

We analyze the proper time evolution of the system energy density. We find that the longitudinal acceleration parameter $λ^*$, magnetic field decay parameter $a$, equation of state $κ$, and initial magnetization $σ_0$ have nontrivial effects on the evolutions of the system energy density and temperature.

We report the first measurement of rapidity-odd directed flow ($v_{1}$) for $D^{0}$ and $\overline{D^{0}}$ mesons at mid-rapidity ($|y| < 0.8$) in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 200\,GeV using the STAR detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. In 10--80\% Au+Au collisions, the slope of the $v_{1}$ rapidity dependence ($dv_{1}/dy$), averaged over $D^{0}$ and $\overline{D^{0}}$ mesons, is -0.080 $\pm$ 0.017 (stat.) $\pm$ 0.016 (syst.) for transverse momentum $p_{\rm T}$ above 1.5~GeV/$c$. The absolute value of $D^0$-meson $dv_1/dy$ is about 25 times larger than that for charged kaons, with 3.4$σ$ significance. These data give a unique insight into the initial tilt of the produced matter, and offer constraints on the geometric and transport parameters of the hot QCD medium created in relativistic heavy-ion collisions.

According to the CPT theorem, which states that the combined operation of charge conjugation, parity transformation and time reversal must be conserved, particles and their antiparticles should have the same mass and lifetime but opposite charge and magnetic moment. Here, we test CPT symmetry in a nucleus containing a strange quark, more specifically in the hypertriton. This hypernucleus is the lightest one yet discovered and consists of a proton, a neutron, and a $Λ$ hyperon. With data recorded by the STAR detector{\cite{TPC,HFT,TOF}} at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, we measure the $Λ$ hyperon binding energy $B_Λ$ for the hypertriton, and find that it differs from the widely used value{\cite{B_1973}} and from predictions{\cite{2019_weak, 1995_weak, 2002_weak, 2014_weak}}, where the hypertriton is treated as a weakly bound system. Our results place stringent constraints on the hyperon-nucleon interaction{\cite{Hammer2002, STAR-antiH3L}}, and have implications for understanding neutron star interiors, where strange matter may be present{\cite{Chatterjee2016}}. A precise comparison of the masses of the hypertriton and the antihypertriton allows us to test CPT symmetry in a nucleus with strangeness for the first time, and we observe no deviation from the expected exact symmetry.
