The equations of state for symmetric nuclear matter and pure neutron matter are investigated with the tensor-optimized Fermi Sphere method (TOFS) up to the density $ρ=0.5$~fm$^{-3}$. This method is based on a linked-cluster expansion theorem, and the energy per particle of nuclear matter ($E/A$) is calculated variationally with respect to the correlated nuclear matter wave function. We can study the density dependence of the many-body terms arising from the operator products, which contribute to $E/A$. In order to clarify the relation between the many-body effects and short-range correlation, we take the spin-isospin dependent central {\it NN} interaction with a few GeV repulsion in the inner region. The EOS obtained by the TOFS method is reasonably reproduced, compared with other \textit{ab initio} many-body methods. We found that the many-body terms from the 2-body to 6-body ones) give sizable effects on $E/A$ at higher density, and they play an important role in nuclear matter.

$^{20}$Ne can be considered as a double-magic $^{16}$O core nucleus surrounded by four nucleons, the constituents of an $α$-like quartet. Similar to other nuclei ($^{212}$Po, $^{104}$Ti, etc.) with a quartet on top of a double-magic core nucleus, significant $α$-like correlations are expected. Correlations in the ground state of $^{20}$Ne are investigated using different approaches. The quartetting wave function approach (QWFA) predicts a large $α$-like cluster contribution near the surface of the nuclei. The Tohsaki-Horiuchi-Schuck-Röpke (THSR) approach describes $α$-like clustering in nuclear systems. The results of the QWFA in the Thomas-Fermi and shell-model approximation are compared with THSR calculations for the container model. Results for the $α$ formation probability and the rms radii are shown.

We searched for the $α$ condensed state in $^{13}$C by measuring the $α$ inelastic scattering at $E_α = 388$ MeV at forward angles including 0 degrees. We performed the distorted-wave Born-approximation calculation with the single-folding potential and the multipole decomposition analysis to determine the isoscalar transition strengths in $^{13}$C. We found a bump structure around $E_x = 12.5$ MeV due to the isoscalar monopole ($IS0$) transition. A peak-fit analysis suggested that this bump consisted of several $1/2^-$ states. We propose that this bump is due to the mirror state of the 13.5 MeV-state in $^{13}$N, which dominantly decays to the $α$ condensed state in $^{12}$C. It was speculated that the $1/2^-$ states around $E_x = 12.5$ MeV were candidates for the $α$ condensed state, but the $3α+ n$ orthogonality condition model suggests that the $α$ condensed state is unlikely to emerge as the negative parity states. We also found two $1/2^+$ or $3/2^+$ states at $E_x = 14.5$ and 16.1 MeV excited with the isoscalar dipole ($IS1$) strengths. We suggest that the 16.1-MeV state is a possible candidate for the $α$ condensed state predicted by the cluster-model calculations on the basis of the good correspondence between the experimental and calculated level structures. However, the theoretical $IS1$ transition strength for this state is significantly smaller than the measured value. Further experimental information is strongly desired to establish the $α$ condensed state in $^{13}$C.

Improving the local density approximation, the shell structure of the core nucleus is considered, and the center-of-mass (c.o.m.) effective potential for the quartet is obtained self-consistently from the shell model wavefunctions. The $α$-cluster formation and decay probabilities are obtained by solving the bound-state of the c.o.m. motion of the quartet and the scattering state of the formed $α$-cluster in the Gurvitz approach. Striking shell effects on the $α$-cluster formation probabilities are analyzed for magic numbers 50, 82 and 126. The computed $α$-decay half-lives of these special nuclei are compared with the newest experimental data.

We find that $^7$Li and $^{11}$B have larger sensitivity to the CP violation than the deuteron. It is also suggested that the EDMs of $^7$Li and $^{11}$B, together with those of $^6$Li, $^9$Be and the $1/2^+_1$ excited state of $^{13}$C, obey an approximate counting rule accounting for the EDM of the cluster and the $α-N $ polarization. We show their sensitivity on the hadronic level CP violation in terms of the chiral effective field theory, and discuss their role in probing new physics beyond the standard model.

The first $3^-$ and $4^-$ states of $^{12}$C are studied in the present container model, in which the shift parameter is introduced to break the parity symmetry for projecting out the negative-parity states. Taking the limit as the shift parameter approaches zero and by variational calculations for one-deformed size parameter, the local energy minima are obtained for the $3^-$ and $4^-$ states. It is found that the obtained single THSR (Tohsaki-Horiuchi-Schuck-Röpke) wave functions for $3^-$ and $4^-$ states are 96% and 92% equivalent to the corresponding GCM wave functions, respectively. The calculated intrinsic densities further show that these negative-parity states of three clusters, different with the traditional understanding of rigid triangle structure, are found to have nonlocalized clustering structure in the two-dimensional container picture.

We propose a new variational method for describing nuclear matter from nucleon-nucleon interaction. We use the unitary correlation operator method (UCOM) for central correlation to treat the short-range repulsion and further include the two-particle two-hole (2p2h) excitations of nucleon pair involving a large relative momentum, which is called 'high-momentum pair'(HM). We describe nuclear matter in finite size with finite particle number on periodic boundary condition and increase the 2p2h configurations until we get the convergence of the total energy per particle. We demonstrate the validity of this 'UCOM+HM' framework by applying it to the symmetric nuclear and neutron matters with the Argonne V4$^\prime$ potential having short-range repulsion. The nuclear equations of state obtained in UCOM+HM are fairly consistent to those of other calculations such as Brueckner-Hartree-Fock and auxiliary field diffusion Monte Carlo in the overall density region.

The high-momentum antisymmetrized molecular dynamics (HMAMD) is a new promising framework with significant analytical simplicity and efficiency inherited from its antisymmetrized molecular dynamics in describing the high momentum correlations in various nuclear states. In the aim of further improving the numerical efficiency for the description of nucleon-nucleon correlation, we introduce a new formulation by including a new Gaussian weighted basis of high momentum pairs in the HMAMD wave function, with which very rapid convergence is obtained in numerical calculation. It is surprising that the very high-momentum components in the new HMAMD basis are found to be almost equivalent to the contact representation of the nucleon-nucleon pairs with very small nucleon-nucleon distance. The explicit formulation for the contact term significantly improves the numerical efficiency of the HMAMD method, which shows the importance of the contact correlation in the formulation of light nuclei.

In order to study the nucleon-nucleon pairing effects in clustering nuclei, we formulate a superposed Tohsaki-Horiuchi-Schuck-Roepke (THSR) wave function, which includes both molecular-orbit and pairing configurations explicitly. With this new wave function, we investigate the abnormal deuteron-like pn-pairing effect in 10B with T=0 and S=1 (isoscalar) by comparing with isovector NN pairs (T=1, S=1) in 10Be and 10C. Energies are calculated for the ground states of 10Be, 10B and 10C nuclei, and the 1+ excited state of 10B. These energies are essentially improved comparing with studies using previous version of THSR wave function. Further more, overlaps between the total wave function and the pairing component indicate that the NN pairing effect is more visible in 10B than in 10Be and 10C. By analyzing the energies and the overlaps between wave function components, we observe two different mechanisms enhancing the formation of deuteron-like pairs in 10B. We also discuss the pairing effect by showing average distances between components in each nucleus and density distributions of valance nucleons.

In the TOFS calculation, we take into account the contributions from all the many body terms arising from the product of the nuclear-matter Hamiltonian $\mathcal{H}$ and $F$. In the TOFS formalism based on Hermitian form, it is shown that the energy per particle in nuclear matter with $Ψ_{\rm ex}$ can be expressed in terms of a linked-cluster expansion. On the basis of these results, we present the formula of the energy per particle in nuclear matter with $Ψ_{N}$. We call the $N$th-order TOFS calculation for evaluating the energy with $Ψ_N$, where the correlation functions are optimally determined in the variation of the energy. The TOFS theory is applied for the study of symmetric nuclear matter using a central NN potential with short-range repulsion. This hybrid approach has advantages in both analytical simplicity and numerical efficiency comparing with other AMD-based methods which treat the bare interaction, especially for heavier nuclear systems. In this work, the $s$-shell nucleus $^{4}$He is calculated with TO-HMAMD by including up to double product of nucleon-nucleon ($NN$) correlations, described by using high-momentum pairs and spatial correlation functions of nucleons. The total energy and radius of $^{4}$He nucleus are well reproduced using the AV8$^\prime$ interaction. The spin-isospin channel dependence is also discussed for $NN$-correlations, which are found to be mostly contributed in the even-state channels, especially the triplet-even channel. Analyses of the analytical formation and numerical results suggest that TO-HMAMD could be a promising framework for general nuclear systems.

With the bare nucleon-nucleon interaction AV8', we sufficiently reproduce the energy and radius of the 3H nucleus in HM-TOAMD. We treat the tensor correlation in antisymmetrized molecular dynamics (AMD) including large-relative-momentum components among nucleon pairs for finite nuclei. The tensor correlation is described by using large imaginary centroid vectors of Gaussian wave packets for nucleon pairs with opposite directions, which makes a large relative momentum. We superpose the AMD basis states, in which one nucleon pair has various relative momenta for all directions; this new method is called "high-momentum AMD" (HM-AMD). We show the results for $^4$He using the effective interaction having a strong tensor force. It is found that HM-AMD provides a large tensor matrix element comparable to the case of the tensor-optimized shell model (TOSM), in which the two-particle-two-hole (2p-2h) excitations are fully included to describe the tensor correlation. The results of two methods agree with each other at the level of the Hamiltonian components of $^4$He. This indicates that in HM-AMD the high-momentum components described by the imaginary centroid vectors of the nucleon pair provide the equivalent effect of the 2p-2h excitations for the tensor correlation.

We obtained two bound states and two resonance (quasi-bound) states for $J^π=0^+$ in $^{13}_Λ{\rm C}$, corresponding to the four $0^+$ states in $^{12}{\rm C}$. However, the inversion of level ordering between the spectra of $^{12}{\rm C}$ and $^{13}_Λ{\rm C}$, i.e. that the $0_3^+$ and $0_4^+$ states in $^{13}_Λ{\rm C}$ correspond to the $0_4^+$ and $0_3^+$ states in $^{12}{\rm C}$, respectively, is shown to occur. The additional $Λ$ particle reduces sizes of the $0_2^+$ and $0_3^+$ states in $^{13}_Λ{\rm C}$ very much, but the shrinkage of the $0_4^+$ state is only a half of the other states. In conclusion, the Hoyle state becomes quite a compact object with ${^{9}_Λ{\rm Be}}+α$ configuration in $^{13}_Λ{\rm C}$ and is no more gaslike state composed of the $3α$ clusters. Instead, the $0_4^+$ state in $^{13}_Λ{\rm C}$, coming from the $^{12}{\rm C}(0_3^+)$ state, appears as a gaslike state composed of $α+α+^{5}_Λ{\rm He}$ configuration, i.e. the Hoyle analog state. A linear-chain state in a $Λ$ hypernucleus is for the first time predicted to exist as the $0_3^+$ state in $^{13}_Λ{\rm C}$ with more shrunk arrangement of the $3α$ clusters along $z$-axis than the $3α$ linear-chain configuration realized in the $^{12}{\rm C}(0_4^+)$ state.

We present a microscopic calculation of alpha-cluster formation in heavy nuclei by using the quartetting wave function approach. The interaction of the quartet with the core nucleus is taken in local density approximation. The alpha-cluster formation is found to be particularly sensitive to the interplay of the mean field felt by the alpha-cluster and the Pauli blocking as a consequence of antisymmetrization. The striking feature of alpha-cluster formation probability across the major shell closures of 82 protons and 126 neutrons is reproduced. The shell (or subshell) effects on the alpha-cluster formation in superheavy nuclei are also analyzed.

We calculate for the first time the electric dipole moment (EDM) of $^{13}$C generated by the isovector CP-odd pion exchange nuclear force in the $α$-cluster model, which describes well the structures of low lying states of the $^{13}$C nucleus. The linear dependence of the EDM of $^{13}$C on the neutron EDM and the isovector CP-odd nuclear coupling is found to be $d_{^{13}{\rm C}} = -0.33 d_n - 0.0020 \bar G_π^{(1)}$. The linear enhancement factor of the CP-odd nuclear coupling is smaller than that of the deuteron, due to the difference of the structure between the $1/2^-_1$ state and the opposite parity ($1/2^+$) states. We clarify the role of the structure played in the enhancement of the EDM. This result provides good guiding principles to search for other nuclei with large enhancement factor. We also mention the role of the EDM of $^{13}$C in determining the new physics beyond the standard model.

With only one single THSR wave function, the calculated results show good agreement with other models and experimental values. We apply, for the first time, the THSR wave function on the chain orbit (σ-orbit) structure in the 0^+_2 state of 10Be. The ring orbit (π-orbit) and σ-orbit structures are further illustrated by calculating the density distribution of the valence neutrons. A full spectrum up to the $1/2^{-}_5$ ($1/2^{+}_3$) state is reproduced consistently with the lowest five $1/2^{-}$ (three $1/2^{+}$) states of experimental spectrum. It is shown that the $1/2^{-}_2$ and $1/2^{-}_3$ states are characterized by the dominant cluster configurations of $^{9}$Be($3/2^-$,$1/2^-$)+$α$, while the ground state $1/2^-_1$ has a shell-model-like structure. The observed monopole transition strengths to the $1/2^{-}_{2,3}$ states are consistently reproduced for the first time. These results indicate that the excited $1/2^-$ states have cluster structures. They are compared to those by the previous work with the shell model. On the other hand, the $1/2^{+}_{1}$ state is found to have a loosely bound neutron structure in which the extra neutron moves around $^{12}$C(g.s) core with $1S$ orbit, reflecting the fact that this state appears by $1.9$ MeV just below the $^{12}$C(g.s)+$n$ threshold, while the $1/2^{+}_{2}$ and $1/2^{+}_{3}$ states are characterized by $^{9}$Be+$α$ structures. We found that the $1/2^+_5$ state located above the $3α+n$ threshold is the Hoyle analogue state in $^{13}$C, the wave function of which is described by product states of constituent clusters, $(0S)^3_α(S)_n$, with the probability of $52$ %.

A modified version of the THSR (Tohsaki-Horiuchi-Schuck-Röpke) wave function is introduced based on the container picture. It is found that the constructed negative-parity THSR wave function is very suitable for describing the cluster states of ${}^9$Be. Namely the nonlocalized clustering is shown to prevail in ${}^9$Be. The calculated binding energy and radius of ${}^9$Be are consistent with calculations in other models and with experimental values. The squared overlaps between the THSR wave function and the Brink+GCM wave function for the $3/2^-$ rotational band of ${}^9$Be are found to be near 96%. Furthermore, by showing the density distribution of the ground state of ${}^9$Be, the π-orbit structure is naturally reproduced by using this THSR wave function.

As an example, we consider $^{212}$Po with the $α$ on top of the $^{208}$ Pb core. We will consider the core nucleus infinitely heavy, so that the $α$ particle moves with respect to a fixed center, i.e., recoil effects are neglected. The fully quantal solution of the problem is discussed. The approach is inspired by the THSR (Tohsaki-Horiuchi-Schuck-Röpke) wave function concept that has been successfully applied to light nuclei. Shell model calculations are improved by including four-particle ($α$-like) correlations that are of relevance when the matter density becomes low. In the region where the $α$-like cluster penetrates the core nucleus, the intrinsic bound state wave function transforms at a critical density into an unbound four-nucleon shell model state. Exploratory calculations for $^{212}$Po are presented. Such preformed cluster states are only hardly described by shell model calculations. Reasons for different physics behavior of an $α$-like cluster with respect to a deuteron-like cluster are discussed.

New concept of clustering is discussed in $Λ$ hypernuclei using a new-type microscopic cluster model wave function, which has a structure that constituent clusters are confined in a container, whose size is a variational parameter and which we refer to as Hyper-Tohsaki-Horiuchi-Schuck-Röpke (Hyper-THSR) wave function. By using the Hyper-THSR wave function, $2α+ Λ$ cluster structure in ${^{9}_Λ{\rm Be}}$ is investigated. We show that full microscopic solutions in the $2α+ Λ$ cluster system, which are given as $2α+ Λ$ Brink-GCM wave functions, are almost perfectly reproduced by the single configurations of the Hyper-THSR wave function. The squared overlaps between the both wave functions are calculated to be $99.5$%, $99.4$%, and $97.7$% for $J^π=0^+$, $2^+$, and $4^+$ states, respectively. We also simulate the structural change by adding the $Λ$ particle, by varying the $ΛN$ interaction artificially. As the increase of the $ΛN$ interaction, the $Λ$ particle gets to move more deeply inside the core and invokes strongly the spatial core shrinkage, and accordingly distinct localized $2α$ clusters appear in the nucleonic intrinsic density, though in ${^{8}{\rm Be}}$ rather gaslike $2α$-cluster structure is shown. The origin of the localization is associated with the strong effect of Pauli principle. We conclude that the container picture of the $2α$ and $Λ$ clusters is essential in understanding the cluster structure in ${^{9}_Λ{\rm Be}}$, in which the very compact spatial localization of clusters is shown in the density distribution.

The theory of quartet condensation is further developed. The onset of quartetting in homgeneous fermionic matter is studied with the help of an in-medium modified four fermion equation. It is found that at very low density quartetting wins over pairing. At zero temperature, in analogy to pairing, a set of equations for the quartet order parameter is given. Contrary to pairing, quartetting only exists for strong coupling and breaks down for weak coupling. Reasons for this finding are detailed. In an application to nuclear matter, the critical temperature for alpha particle condensation can reach values up to around 8 MeV. The disappearance of alpha particles with increasing density, i.e. the Mott transition, is investigated. In finite nuclei the Hoyle state, that is the second 0+ state of 12C is identified as an 'alpha-particle condensate' state. It is conjectured that such states also exist in heavier n-alpha nuclei, like 16O, 20Ne, etc. The sixth 0+ state in 16O is proposed as an analogue to the Hoyle state. The Gross-Pitaevski equation is employed to make an estimate of the maximum number of alpha particles a condensate state can contain. Possible quartet condensation in other systems is discussed briefly.

A container picture is proposed for understanding cluster dynamics where the clusters make nonlocalized motion occupying the lowest orbit of the cluster mean-field potential characterized by the size parameter $``B"$ in the THSR (Tohsaki-Horiuchi-Schuck-Röpke) wave function. The nonlocalized cluster aspects of the inversion-doublet bands in $^{20}$Ne which have been considered as a typical manifestation of localized clustering are discussed. So far unexplained puzzling features of the THSR wave function, namely that after angular-momentum projection for two cluster systems the prolate THSR wave function is almost 100$\%$ equivalent to an oblate THSR wave function is clarified. It is shown that the true intrinsic two-cluster THSR configuration is nonetheless prolate. The proposal of the container picture is based on the fact that typical cluster systems, 2$α$, 3$α$, and $α$+$^{16}$O, are all well described by a single THSR wave function. It will be shown for the case of linear-chain states with two and three $α$-clusters as well as for the $α$+$^{16}$O system that localization is entirely of kinematical origin, that is, due to the inter-cluster Pauli repulsion. It is concluded that this feature is general for nuclear cluster states.

We investigate the $α$+\oo\ cluster structure in the inversion-doublet band ($K^π=0_{1}^\pm$) states of \nene\ with an angular-momentum-projected version of the Tohsaki-Horiuchi-Schuck-Röpke (THSR) wave function, which was successful "in its original form" for the description of, e.g., the famous Hoyle state. In contrast with the traditional view on clusters as localized objects, especially in inversion doublets, we find that these {\it single} THSR wave functions, which are based on the concept of nonlocalized clustering, can well describe the $K^π=0_1^-$ band and the $K^π=0_1^+$ band. For instance, they have 99.98% and 99.87% squared overlaps for $1^-$ and $3^- $ states (99.29%, 98.79% and 97.75% for $0^+, 2^+$ and $4^+$ states), respectively, with the corresponding exact solution of the $α$+\oo\ resonating group method. These astounding results shed a completely new light on the physics of low energy nuclear cluster states in nuclei: The clusters are nonlocalized and move around in the whole nuclear volume, only avoiding mutual overlap due to the Pauli blocking effect.

Isoscalar monopole strength function in $^{16}$O up to $E_{x}\simeq40$ MeV is discussed. We found that the fine structures at the low energy region up to $E_{x} \simeq 16$ MeV in the experimental monopole strength function obtained by the $^{16}$O$(α,α^{\prime})$ reaction can be rather satisfactorily reproduced within the framework of the $4α$ cluster model, while the gross three bump structures observed at the higher energy region ($16 \lesssim E_{x} \lesssim 40$ MeV) look likely to be approximately reconciled by the mean-field calculations such as RPA and QRPA. In this paper, it is emphasized that two different types of monopole excitations exist in $^{16}$O; one is the monopole excitation to cluster states which is dominant in the lower energy part ($E_{x} \lesssim 16$ MeV), and the other is the monopole excitation of the mean-field type such as one-particle one-hole ($1p1h$) which {is attributed} mainly to the higher energy part ($16 \lesssim E_{x} \lesssim 40$ MeV). It is found that this character of the monopole excitations originates from the fact that the ground state of $^{16}$O with the dominant doubly closed shell structure has a duality of the mean-field-type {as well as} $α$-clustering {character}. This dual nature of the ground state seems to be a common feature in light nuclei.

The $α$-particle condensate in nuclei is a novel state described by a product state of $α$'s, all with their c.o.m. in the lowest 0S orbit. We demonstrate that a typical $α$-particle condensate is the Hoyle state ($E_{x}=7.65$ MeV, $0^+_2$ state in $^{12}$C), which plays a crucial role for the synthesis of $^{12}$C in the universe. The influence of antisymmentrization in the Hoyle state on the bosonic character of the $α$ particle is discussed in detail. It is shown to be weak. The bosonic aspects in the Hoyle state, therefore, are predominant. It is conjectured that $α$-particle condensate states also exist in heavier $nα$ nuclei, like $^{16}$O, $^{20}$Ne, etc. For instance the $0^+_6$ state of $^{16}$O at $E_{x}=15.1$ MeV is identified from a theoretical analysis as being a strong candidate of a $4α$ condensate. The calculated small width (34 keV) of $0^+_6$, consistent with data, lends credit to the existence of heavier Hoyle-analogue states. In non-self-conjugated nuclei such as $^{11}$B and $^{13}$C, we discuss candidates for the product states of clusters, composed of $α$'s, triton's, and neutrons etc. The relationship of $α$-particle condensation in finite nuclei to quartetting in symmetric nuclear matter is investigated with the help of an in-medium modified four-nucleon equation. A nonlinear order parameter equation for quartet condensation is derived and solved for $α$ particle condensation in infinite nuclear matter. The strong qualitative difference with the pairing case is pointed out.

The structure of $3/2^{-}$ and $1/2^{+}$ states in $^{11}$B is investigated with an $α+α+t$ orthogonality condition model (OCM) based on the Gaussian expansion method. Full levels up to the $3/2^{-}_{3}$ and $1/2^{+}_2$ states around the $α+α+t$ threshold ($E_x$=11.1 MeV) are reproduced consistently with the experimental energy levels. It is shown that the $3/2_{3}^{-}$ state located around the $^{7}$Li+$α$ threshold has an $α+α+t$ cluster structure, whereas the $3/2_{1}^{-}$ and $3/2_{2}^{-}$ states have a shell-model-like compact structure. We found that the $3/2_{3}^{-}$ state does not possess an $α$-condensate-like nature similar to the $0^{+}_{2}$ state of $^{12}$C (Hoyle state) which has a dilute $3α$-condensate structure described by a $(0S_α)^3$ configuration with about $70$\% probability, although the monopole transition strength of the former is as large as that of the latter. We discuss the reasons why the $3/2_{3}^{-}$ state does not have the condensate character. On the other hand, the $1/2^{+}_{1}$ state just below the $^{7}$Li+$α$ threshold has a cluster structure which can be interpreted as a parity-doublet partner of the $3/2^{-}_3$ state. We indicate that the $12.56$-MeV state ($J^π=1/2^{+}_{2}$) just above the $α+α+t$ threshold observed in the $^7$Li($^{7}$Li,$^{11}$B$^*$)$t$ reaction etc. is of the dilute-cluster-gas-like, and is a strong candidate for the Hoyle-analogue state which has a configuration of $(0S_α)^{2}(0S_{t})$ with about $65$\% probability from the analyses of the single-cluster motions in $^{11}$B. The structure property of the $1/2^{+}$ resonant state is analyzed with the complex scaling method.

The 4-alpha condensate state for ^{16}O is discussed with the THSR (Tohsaki-Horiuchi-Schuck-Roepke) wave function which has alpha-particle condensate character. Taking into account a proper treatment of resonances, it is found that the 4-alpha THSR wave function yields a fourth 0^+ state in the continuum above the 4-alpha-breakup threshold in addition to the three 0^+ states obtained in a previous analysis. It is shown that this fourth 0^+ ((0_4^+)_{THSR}) state has an analogous structure to the Hoyle state, since it has a very dilute density and a large component of alpha+^{12}C(0_2^+) configuration. Furthermore, single-alpha motions are extracted from the microscopic 16-nucleon wave function, and the condensate fraction and momentum distribution of alpha particles are quantitatively discussed. It is found that for the (0_4^+)_{THSR} state a large alpha-particle occupation probability concentrates on a single-alpha 0S orbit and the alpha-particle momentum distribution has a delta-function-like peak at zero momentum, both indicating that the state has a strong 4-alpha condensate character. It is argued that the (0_4^+)_{THSR} state is the counterpart of the 0_6^+ state which was obtained as the 4-alpha condensate state in the previous 4-alpha OCM (Orthogonality Condition Model) calculation, and therefore is likely to correspond to the 0_6^+ state observed at 15.1 MeV.

Certain aspects of the recently proposed antisymmetrised alpha particle product state wave function, or THSR alpha cluster wave function, for the description of the ground state in 8Be, the Hoyle state in 12C, and analogous states in heavier nuclei, are elaborated in detail. For instance, the influence of antisymmetrisation in the Hoyle state on the bosonic character of the alpha particles is studied carefully. It is shown to be weak, so that bosonic aspects are predominant. The de Broglie wave length of alpha particles in the Hoyle state is shown to be much larger than the inter-alpha distance. It is pointed out that the bosonic features of low density alpha gas states have measurable consequences, one of which, that is enhanced multi-alpha decay properties, likely already have been detected. Consistent with experiment, the width of the proposed analogue to the Hoyle state in 16O at the excitation energy of E_x=15.1 MeV is estimated to be very small (34 keV), lending credit to the existence of heavier Hoyle-like states. The intrinsic single boson density matrix of a self-bound Bose system can, under physically desirable boundary conditions, be defined unambiguously. One eigenvalue then separates out, being close to the number of alpha's in the system. Differences between Brink and THSR alpha cluster wave functions are worked out. No cluster model of the Brink type can describe the Hoyle state with a single configuration. On the contrary, many superpositions of the Brink type are necessary, implying delocalisation towards an alpha product state. It is shown that single alpha particle orbits in condensates of different nuclei are almost the same. It is thus argued that alpha particle antisymmetrised product states of the THSR type are a very promising novel and useful concept in nuclear physics.

Investigations on the internal one-particle density matrix in the case of Bose-Einstein condensates with a finite number ($N$) of particles in a harmonic potential are performed. We solve the eigenvalue problem of the Pethick-Pitaevskii-type internal density matrix and find a fragmented condensate. On the contrary the condensate Jacobi-type internal density matrix gives complete condensation into a single state. The internal one-particle density matrix is, therefore, shown to be different in general for different choices of the internal coordinate system. We propose two physically motivated criteria for the choice of the adequate coordinate systems which give us a unique answer for the internal one-particle density matrix. One criterion is that in the infinite particle number limit ($N=\infty$) the internal one-particle density matrix should have the same eigenvalues and eigenfunctions as those of the corresponding ideal Bose-Einstein condensate in the laboratory frame. The other criterion is that the coordinate of the internal one-particle density matrix should be orthogonal to the remaining $(N - 2)$ internal coordinates. This second criterion is shown to imply the first criterion. It is shown that the internal Jacobi coordinate system satisfies these two criteria while the internal coordinate system adopted by Pethick and Pitaevskii for the construction of the internal one-particle density matrix does not. It is demonstrated that these two criteria uniquely determine the internal one-particle density matrix which is identical to that calculated with the Jacobi coordinates. The relevance of this work concerning $α$-particle condensates in nuclei, as well as bosonic atoms in traps, is pointed out.

The onset of quartetting, i.e. alpha-particle condensation, in symmetric nuclear matter is studied with the help of an in-medium modified four nucleon equation. It is found that at very low density quartetting wins over pairing, because of the strong binding of the alpha-particles. The critical temperature can reach values up to around 6 MeV. Also the disappearance of alpha-particles with increasing density, i.e. the Mott transition, is investigated. In finite nuclei the Hoyle state, that is the 0_2^+ of 12C, is identified as an "alpha-particle condensate" state. It is conjectured that such states also exist in heavier n alpha-nuclei, like 16O, 20Ne, etc. For instance the 6-th 0^+ state of 16O at 15.1 MeV is identified from a theoretical analysis as being a strong candidate for an alpha condensate state. Exploratory calculations are performed for the density dependence of the alpha condensate fraction at zero temperature to address the suppression of the four-particle condensate below nuclear-matter density. Possible quartet condensation in other systems is discussed briefly

The internal one-particle density matrix is discussed for Bose-Einstein condensates with finite number of particles in a harmonic trap. The outcome of the digonalization of the density matrix depends on the choice of the internal coordinates: The Pethick-Pitaevskii-type internal density matrix, whose analytical eigenvalues and eigenfunctions are evaluated, yields a fragmented condensate, while the Jacobi-type internal density matrix leads to an ideal condensate. We give a criterion for the choice of the internal coordinates: In the macroscopic limit the internal density matrix should have eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of an ideal Bose-Einstein condensate, this being a very physical condition for cases where the system is also an ideal Bose condensation in the laboratory frame. One choice fulfilling this boundary condition is given by the internal Jacobi coordinates, while the internal coordinates with respect to the center of mass do not satisfy the condition. Based on our criterion, a general definition of the internal one-particle density matrix is presented in a self-bound system, consisting of interacting bosons.

A full spectrum up to the 0_6^+ state is reproduced consistently with the lowest six 0^+ states of the experimental spectrum. The 0^+_6 state is obtained at about 2 MeV above the 4 αbreakup threshold and has a dilute density structure, with a radius of about 5 fm. The state has an appreciably large αcondensate fraction of 61 %, and a large component of α+12C(0_2^+) configuration, both features being reliable evidence for this state to be of 4 αcondensate nature.

At low densities, with decreasing temperatures, in symmetric nuclear matter alpha-particles are formed, which eventually give raise to a quantum condensate with four-nucleon alpha-like correlations (quartetting). Starting with a model of alpha-matter, where undistorted alpha particles interact via an effective interaction such as the Ali-Bodmer potential, the suppression of the condensate fraction at zero temperature with increasing density is considered. Using a Jastrow-Feenberg approach, it is found that the condensate fraction vanishes near saturation density. Additionally, the modification of the internal state of the alpha particle due to medium effects will further reduce the condensate.
In finite systems, an enhancement of the S state wave function of the c.o.m. orbital of alpha particle motion is considered as the correspondence to the condensate. Wave functions have been constructed for self-conjugate 4n nuclei which describe the condensate state, but are fully antisymmetrized on the nucleonic level. These condensate-like cluster wave functions have been successfully applied to describe properties of low-density states near the n alpha threshold. Comparison with OCM calculations in 12C and 16O shows strong enhancement of the occupation of the S-state c.o.m. orbital of the alpha-particles. This enhancement is decreasing if the baryon density increases, similar to the density-induced suppression of the condensate fraction in alpha matter. The ground states of 12C and 16O show no enhancement at all, thus a quartetting condensate cannot be formed at saturation densities.

We discuss strength of monopole excitation of the ground state to cluster states in light nuclei. We clarify that the monopole excitation to cluster states is in general strong as to be comparable with the single particle strength and shares an appreciable portion of the sum rule value in spite of large difference of the structure between the cluster state and the shell-model-like ground state. We argue that the essential reasons of the large strength are twofold. One is the fact that the clustering degree of freedom is possessed even by simple shell model wave functions. The detailed feature of this fact is described by the so-called Bayman-Bohr theorem which tells us that SU(3) shell model wave function is equivalent to cluster model wave function. The other is the ground state correlation induced by the activation of the cluster degrees of freedom described by the Bayman-Bohr theorem. We demonstrate, by deriving analytical expressions of monopole matrix elements, that the order of magnitude of the monopole strength is governed by the first reason, while the second reason plays a sufficient role in reproducing the data up to the factor of magnitude of the monopole strength. Our explanation is made by analysing three examples which are the monopole excitations to the $0^+_2$ and $0^+_3$ states in $^{16}$O and the one to the $0^+_2$ state in $^{12}$C. The present results imply that the measurement of strong monopole transitions or excitations is in general very useful for the study of cluster states.
