We investigate the role of a dynamical gluon in the pion within the Basis Light-Front Quantization (BLFQ) framework and compare it with the solution of the Minkowski space Bethe-Salpeter equation, focusing on contributions beyond the valence state. Particularly in BLFQ, we identify the effect on the pion structure of the dynamical chiral symmetry breaking by the enhancement of the spin-flip matrix element, through the $|q\bar qg\rangle$ component of the light-front wave function and associated gluon parton distribution function (PDF). We explicitly show an enhancement of the low-$x$ contribution in the quark PDF associated with the large spin-flip matrix element, necessary to provide the $π-ρ$ mass splitting.

We compare our results with those from light-front perturbation theory. We adopt a novel basis with its scale depending on the constituents' longitudinal momentum fraction. We show that this basis improves convergence of the form factors with increasing basis dimension, compared to that calculated in the original basis with fixed scale. These results both validate the BLFQ approach and provide guidance for its efficient implementation in solving light-front Hamiltonian mass eigenstates for more complex systems in QED and QCD.

The calculation of nuclear electromagnetic sum rules by directly diagonalizing the nuclear Hamiltonian in a large basis is numerically challenging and has not been performed for $A>2$ nuclei. With the significant progress of high performance computing, we show that calculating sum rules using numerous discretized continuum states obtained by directly diagonalizing the ab initio no-core shell model Hamiltonian is achievable numerically. Specifically, we calculate the $^{4}$He electric dipole ($E1$) polarizability, that is an inverse energy weighted sum rule, employing the Daejeon16 $NN$ interaction. We demonstrate that the calculations are numerically tractable as the dimension of the basis increases and are convergent. Our results for the $^{4}$He electric dipole polarizability are consistent with the most recent experimental data and are compared with those of other theoretical studies employing different techniques and various interactions.

We compute the gravitational form factors $A_i$, $D_i$ and $\bar c_i$ of the scalar Yukawa theory using both the light-cone and covariant perturbation theory at the one-loop level. The light-cone formalism provides a potential approach to access these form factors beyond the perturbative regime. However, unlike the covariant formulation, the Poincaré symmetry on the light cone is not manifest. In this work, we use perturbation theory as a benchmark to extract the gravitational form factors from the light-front energy-momentum tensor. By comparing results on and off the light cone, we identify $T^{++}, T^{+a}, T^{+-}, T^{12}$ as the "good currents" that are properly renormalized and can be used to extract the gravitational form factors.

Everything gravitates and they do so through the energy-momentum tensor (EMT). However, there is no consensus on how to define the EMT of a hadron, e.g. the proton, the fundamental building blocks of the visible world. In this work, we show that the hadronic EMT can be cast into the form of relativistic continua with spin. The fluid-like form allows a clear identification of the proper hadronic energy density, pressure and shear. A spin tensor contribution is also identified without the reference to the total angular momentum operator, in alignment with the recent development in relativistic spin hydrodynamics. The hadronic EMT is related to the quantum expectation value of the EMT operator through the convolution with the hadronic wavepacket. To factorize out the hadronic EMT, different multipole expansion schemes are explored. We show that the popular Breit-frame densities and light-front densities emerge as the monopole momentum densities from different factorization schemes.

We demonstrate, in the context of a scalar version of the chiral effective field theory, that the multi-sea quark contribution to the nucleon is significant and highly non-trivial in sharp contrast to the prediction of perturbation theory. The non-perturbative calculation is performed in the Fock sector dependent renormalization scheme on the light front, in which the non-perturbative renormalization is incorporated. The calculation suggests that a fully non-perturbative calculation of the chiral EFT is needed to obtain a robust result to be compared with the recent experimental measurement of flavor asymmetry in the proton.

We investigate the gravitational form factors of charmonium. Our method is based on a Hamiltonian formalism on the light front known as basis light-front quantization. The charmonium mass spectrum and light-front wave functions were obtained from diagonalizing an effective Hamiltonian that incorporates confinement from holographic QCD and one-gluon exchange interaction from light-front QCD. We proposed a quantum many-body approach to construct the hadronic matrix elements of the energy momentum tensor $T^{++}$ and $T^{+-}$, which are used to extract the gravitational form factors $A(Q^2)$ and $D(Q^2)$. The obtained form factors satisfy the known constraints, e.g. von Laue condition. From these quantities, we also extract the energy, pressure and light-front energy distributions of the system. Quantum computing provides a promising approach for solving the real-time dynamics of systems consist of quarks and gluons from first-principle calculations that are intractable with classical computers. In this work, we start with an initial problem of the ultra-relativistic quark-nucleus scattering and present an efficient and precise approach to quantum simulate the dynamics on the light front. This approach employs the eigenbasis of the asymptotic scattering system and implements the compact scheme for basis encoding. It exploits the operator structure of the light-front Hamiltonian of the scattering system, which enables the Hamiltonian input scheme that utilizes the quantum Fourier transform for efficiency. It utilizes the truncated Taylor series for the dynamics simulations. The qubit cost of our approach scales logarithmically with the Hilbert space dimension of the scattering system. The gate cost has optimal scaling with the simulation error and near optimal scaling with the simulation time. These scalings make our approach advantageous for large-scale dynamics simulations on future fault-tolerant quantum computers. We demonstrate our approach with a simple scattering problem and benchmark the results with those from the Trotter algorithm and the classical calculations, where good agreement between the results is found.

In this paper, we calculate the T-even gluon TMDs at the leading twist within the Basis Light-front Quantization framework. We employ the light-front wave functions of the proton obtained from a light-front quantized Hamiltonian with Quantum Chromodynamics input determined for its valence Fock sector with three constituent quarks and an additional Fock sector, encompassing three quarks and a dynamical gluon, with a three-dimensional confinement. After obtaining the numerical results we investigate the properties of gluon TMDs by checking whether they satisfy the Mulders-Rodrigues inequalities and investigate the correlations between transverse and longitudinal degrees of freedom. With their connection to unintegrated gluon distributions in mind, we further investigate the limiting behaviours of gluon TMDs in the small-$x$ and large-$x$ regions.

We present an efficient quantum circuit for block encoding pairing Hamiltonian often studied in nuclear physics. Our block encoding scheme does not require map** the creation and annihilation operators to the Pauli operators and representing the Hamiltonian as a linear combination of unitaries. Instead, we show how to encode the Hamiltonian directly using controlled swap operations. We analyze the gate complexity of the block encoding circuit and show that it scales polynomially with respect to the number of qubits required to represent a quantum state associated with the pairing Hamiltonian. We also show how the block encoding circuit can be combined with the quantum singular value transformation to construct an efficient quantum circuit for approximating the density of states of a pairing Hamiltonian. The techniques presented can be extended to encode more general second-quantized Hamiltonians.

We propose a hybrid quantum-classical framework to solve the elastic scattering phase shift of two well-bound nuclei in an uncoupled channel. Within this framework, we develop a many-body formalism in which the continuum scattering states of the two colliding nuclei are regulated by a weak external harmonic oscillator potential with varying strength. Based on our formalism, we propose an approach to compute the eigenenergies of the low-lying scattering states of the relative motion of the colliding nuclei as a function of the oscillator strength of the confining potential. Utilizing the modified effective range expansion, we extrapolate the elastic scattering phase shift of the colliding nuclei from these eigenenergies to the limit when the external potential vanishes. In our hybrid approach, we leverage the advantage of quantum computing to solve for these eigenenergies from a set of many-nucleon Hamiltonian eigenvalue problems. These eigenenergies are inputs to classical computers to obtain the phase shift. We demonstrate our framework with two simple problems, where we implement the rodeo algorithm to solve the relevant eigenenergies with the IBM Qiskit quantum simulator. The results of both the spectra and the elastic scattering phase shifts agree well with other theoretical results.

However, matrix elements of the E2 operator are sensitive to the nuclear wave function at large distances and are poorly convergent within the ab initio no-core shell model approach. We develop a non-perturbative approach to simulating scattering on classical and quantum computers, in which the initial and final states contain a fixed number of composite particles. The construction is designed to mimic a particle collision, wherein two composite particles are brought in contact. The initial states are assembled via consecutive application of operators creating eigenstates of the interacting theory from vacuum. These operators are defined with the aid of the Møller wave operator, which can be constructed using such methods as adiabatic state preparation or double commutator flow equation.
The approach is well-suited for studying strongly coupled systems in both relativistic and non-relativistic settings. For relativistic systems, we employ the language of light-front quantization, which has been previously used for studying the properties of individual bound states, as well as for simulating their scattering in external fields, and is now adopted to the studies of scattering of bound state systems.
For simulations on classical computers, we describe an algorithm for calculating exact (in the sense of a given discretized theory) scattering probabilities, which has cost (memory and time) exponential in momentum grid size. Such calculations may be interesting in their own right and can be used for benchmarking results of a quantum simulation algorithm, which is the main application of the developed framework. We illustrate our ideas with an application to the $φ^4$ theory in $1+1\rm D$.

We investigate the gravitational form factors of a strongly coupled scalar theory that mimic the interaction between the nucleon and the pion. The non-perturbative calculation is based on the light-front Hamiltonian formalism. We renormalize the energy-momentum tensor with a Fock sector dependent scheme. We also systematically analyze the Lorentz structure of the energy-momentum tensor and identify the suitable hadron matrix elements to extract the form factors, avoiding the contamination of spurious contributions. We verify that the extracted form factors obey momentum conservation as well as the mechanical stability condition. From the gravitational form factors, we compute the energy and pressure distributions of the system. Furthermore, we show that utilizing the Hamiltonian eigenvalue equation, the off-diagonal Fock sector contributions from the interaction term can be converted to diagonal Fock sector contributions, yielding a systematic non-perturbative light-front wave function representation of the energies and forces inside the system.

The internal image of the proton is unveiled by examining the generalized parton distributions (GPDs) at zero skewness, within the basis light-front quantized environment. Several distributions emerge when a quark is sampled with different currents depending upon the helicity arrangements of the active quark and the proton target. We investigate six of the eight leading-twist proton GPDs of the valence quarks, the helicity conserving distributions $(H, E, \tilde{H})$ and the helicity non-conserving $(H_T,E_T,\tilde{H}_T)$ distributions at skewness set to zero ($ζ=0$). We consider purely transverse momentum transfer and, hence, obtain results describe only the proton's two-dimensional structure in the transverse plane. We present the Mellin moments of these distribution functions, where the first moment produces a form factor and the second Mellin moments help extract the information on partonic contributions to the hadronic angular momentum. We compare our results for the Mellin moments with those from lattice QCD and other approaches where available. We also present the GPDs in transverse position space.

We present new microscopic effective shell-model interactions in the valence sd shell, obtained from the modern Daejeon16 nucleon-nucleon potential using no-core shell-model (NCSM) wave functions of 18F at Nmax=6 (total oscillator quanta of excitation) model space and the Okubo-Lee-Suzuki transformation. First, we explore the convergence properties of our calculations and show that the excitation energies of states in 18F, characterized by the largest valence-like configurations, are reasonably converged and the lowest states are in sensible agreement with experiment. Then, we investigate the monopole properties of that interaction in comparison with the phenomenological universal sd-shell interaction, USDB, and with the previously derived interaction at Nmax=4. Theoretical binding energies and low-energy spectra of the O isotopes, as well as low-energy spectra of a selection of $sd$-shell nuclei, are presented. We conclude that the use of larger-space NCSM wave functions leads to a noticeable improvement in the quality of the derived effective interaction. We propose monopole modifications of the Daejeon16 centroids which further improve the agreement with experiment throughout the sd shell, as demonstrated by a compilation of spectra contained in Supplemental Material.

We present theoretical ground state energies and their uncertainties for p-shell nuclei obtained from chiral effective field theory internucleon interactions as a function of chiral order, fitted to two- and three-body data only. We apply a Similary Renormalization Group transformation to improve the numerical convergence of the many-body calculations, and discuss both the numerical uncertainties arising from basis truncations and those from omitted induced many-body forces, as well as chiral truncation uncertainties. With complete Next-to-Next-to-Leading (N2LO) order two- and three-body interactions, we find significant overbinding for the ground states in the upper p-shell, but using higher-order two-body potentials, in combination with N2LO three-body forces, our predictions agree with experiment throughout the p-shell to within our combined estimated uncertainties. The uncertainties due to chiral order truncation are noticeably larger than the numerical uncertainties, but they are expected to become comparable to the numerical uncertainties at complete N3LO.

We propose a framework for computing the structure and dynamics for second-quantized many-nucleon Hamiltonians on quantum computers. We develop an oracle-based Hamiltonian input model that computes the many-nucleon states and nonzero Hamiltonian matrix elements of the many-nucleon system. With our Fock-state based input model, we show how to implement the sparse matrix simulation algorithms to calculate the dynamics of the second-quantized many-nucleon Hamiltonian. Based on the dynamics simulation methods, we also present the methodology for structure calculations of the many-nucleon system. In this work, we provide an explicit circuit design of our input model of the second-quantized Hamiltonian within a direct encoding scheme that maps the occupation of each available single-particle state in the many-nucleon state to the state of specific qubit in a quantum register. We analyze our method and provide the asymptotic cost in computing resources for structure and dynamics calculations of many-nucleon systems. For pedagogical purposes, we demonstrate our input model with two model problems in restricted model spaces.

Chiral effective field theory ($χ$EFT) provides a framework for obtaining internucleon interactions in a systematically improvable fashion from first principles, while also providing for the derivation of consistent electroweak current operators. In this work, we apply consistently derived interactions and currents towards calculating the magnetic dipole moments of the $A=3$ systems Triton and Helium-3. We focus here on LENPIC interactions obtained using semilocal coordinate-space (SCS) regularization. Starting from the momentum-space representation of the LENPIC $χ$EFT vector current, we derive the SCS-regularized magnetic dipole operator up through N2LO. We then carry out no-core shell model calculations for Triton and Helium-3 systems, using the SCS LENPIC interaction at N2LO in $χ$EFT, and evaluate the magnetic dipole moments obtained using the consistently derived one-nucleon and two-nucleon electromagnetic currents. As anticipated by prior results with $χ$EFT currents, the current corrections through N2LO provide improved, but not yet complete, agreement with experiment for the Triton and Helium-3 magnetic dipole moments.

This White Paper presents the community inputs and scientific conclusions from the Hot and Cold QCD Town Meeting that took place September 23-25, 2022 at MIT, as part of the Nuclear Science Advisory Committee (NSAC) 2023 Long Range Planning process. A total of 424 physicists registered for the meeting. The meeting highlighted progress in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) nuclear physics since the 2015 LRP (LRP15) and identified key questions and plausible paths to obtaining answers to those questions, defining priorities for our research over the coming decade. In defining the priority of outstanding physics opportunities for the future, both prospects for the short (~ 5 years) and longer term (5-10 years and beyond) are identified together with the facilities, personnel and other resources needed to maximize the discovery potential and maintain United States leadership in QCD physics worldwide. This White Paper is organized as follows: In the Executive Summary, we detail the Recommendations and Initiatives that were presented and discussed at the Town Meeting, and their supporting rationales. Section 2 highlights major progress and accomplishments of the past seven years. It is followed, in Section 3, by an overview of the physics opportunities for the immediate future, and in relation with the next QCD frontier: the EIC. Section 4 provides an overview of the physics motivations and goals associated with the EIC. Section 5 is devoted to the workforce development and support of diversity, equity and inclusion. This is followed by a dedicated section on computing in Section 6. Section 7 describes the national need for nuclear data science and the relevance to QCD research.

The twist-3 TMDs are not independent and can be decomposed into twist-$2$ and genuine twist-$3$ terms from the equations of motion (EOM). We compute the TMDs from the resulting light-front wave functions obtained by diagonalizing the light-front QCD Hamiltonian, determined for pion's constituent quark-antiquark and quark-antiquark-gluon Fock sectors, with three-dimensional confinement. We also obtain the twist-3 parton distribution functions (PDFs) and show that they preserve the sum rule, which affirms the robustness of our approach. This is the first time that theoretical predictions are made for subleading twist structures of the pion containing interference terms between two light-front Fock sectors.

We employ the non-perturbative time-dependent basis function (tBF) approach to investigate in detail the sub-Coulomb barrier scattering of the deuteron projectile on the $^{208}$Pb target. Specifically, we treat the target as a quiescent source of a strong external Coulomb field that induces higher-order effects in electric-dipole excitations of the deuteron projectile including the population of states not accessible through direct electric-dipole transitions from the ground state of the deuteron. We calculate the electric-dipole polarizability of the deuteron and elastic scattering observables for comparison with experimental data. With no adjustable parameters, the tBF approach provides good agreement with experimentally available differential cross-section ratios. The dependence of these measured quantities on nucleon-nucleon interactions is investigated. The effects of the polarization potential on the scattering observables are also presented in this work. We also investigate the detailed scattering dynamics and identify characteristics of coherent and incoherent processes.

We present a comprehensive investigation of few-nucleon systems as well as light and medium-mass nuclei up to $A=48$ using the current Low Energy Nuclear Physics International Collaboration two-nucleon interactions in combination with the third-order (N$^2$LO) three-nucleon forces. To address the systematic overbinding of nuclei starting from $A \sim 10$ found in our earlier study utilizing the N$^2$LO two- and three-nucleon forces, we take into account higher-order corrections to the two-nucleon potentials up through fifth order in chiral effective field theory. The resulting Hamiltonian can be completely determined using the $A=3$ binding energies and selected nucleon-deuteron cross sections as input. It is then shown to predict other nucleon-deuteron scattering observables and spectra of light $p$-shell nuclei, for which a detailed correlated truncation error analysis is performed, in agreement with experimental data. Moreover, the predicted ground state energies of nuclei in the oxygen isotopic chain from $^{14}$O to $^{26}$O as well as $^{40}$Ca and $^{48}$Ca show a remarkably good agreement with experimental values, given that the Hamiltonian is fixed completely from the $A \leq 3$ data, once the fourth-order (N$^3$LO) corrections to the two-nucleon interactions are taken into account. On the other hand, the charge radii are found to be underpredicted by $\sim 10\%$ for the oxygen isotopes and by almost $20\%$ for $^{40}$Ca and $^{48}$Ca.

We revisit Minkowski's lost legacy on relativistic electromagnetism in order to resolve long-standing puzzles over the charge distribution of relativistic systems like hadrons. Hadrons are unique relativistic electromagnetic systems characterized by their comparable size and Compton wavelength $r_h \sim λ_C$. As such, it was recently realized that the traditional Sachs definition of the charge distribution based on a non-relativistic formula is invalid. We explain that this is the same problem pursued by Lorentz, Einstein and others, on the electromagnetism of a moving body. We show how various charge distributions proposed in hadronic physics naturally emerge as the multipole moment densities in the macroscopic theory of relativistic electromagnetism.

In recent years, remarkable progress has been achieved in develo** novel non-perturbative techniques for constructing valence space shell model Hamiltonians from realistic internucleon interactions. One of these methods is based on the Okubo--Lee--Suzuki (OLS) unitary transformation applied to no-core shell model (NCSM) solutions. In the present work, we implement the corresponding approach to solve for valence space effective electromagnetic operators. To this end, we use the NCSM results for $A=16-18$, obtained at $N_{\rm max}=4$, to derive a charge-dependent version of the effective interaction for the $sd$ shell, which allows us to exactly reproduce selected NCSM spectra of $^{18}$O, $^{18}$F and $^{18}$Ne within the two valence nucleon space. We then deduce effective single-particle matrix elements of electric quadrupole ($E2$) and magnetic dipole ($M1$) operators by matching them to the electromagnetic transitions and moments for $^{17}$O and $^{17}$F from the NCSM at $N_{\rm max}=4$. Thus, effective $E2$ and $M1$ operators are obtained as sets of single-particle matrix elements for the valence space ($sd$ shell) which allow us to reproduce the NCSM results for $A=17$ exactly. Systematic comparison of a large set of $sd$ shell results on quadrupole and magnetic dipole moments and transitions for $A=18$ using effective $E2$ and $M1$ operators that we derive from the full NCSM calculations demonstrates a remarkable agreement.

We present a calculation of the radiative capture cross section $p(n,γ)d$ in the low-energy range, where the $M1$ reaction channel dominates. Employing the LENPIC nucleon-nucleon interaction up to the fifth order (N4LO) that is regularized by the semi-local coordinate space regulators, we obtain the initial and final state wave functions, and evaluate the phase shifts of the scattering state and deuteron properties. We derive the transition operator from the chiral effective field theory up to the next-to-next-to leading order (N2LO), where we also regularize the transition operator using regulators consistent with those of the interactions. We compute the capture cross sections and the results show a converging pattern with the chiral-order expansion of the nucleon-nucleon interaction, where the regulator dependence of the results is weak when higher-order nucleon-nucleon interactions are employed. We quantify the uncertainties of the cross-section results due to the chiral-order truncation. The chirally complete and consistent cross-section results are performed up to N2LO and they compare well with the experiments and other theoretical predictions.

To accommodate both in a single light-front wave function in the valence space, we obtain a sum rule by analyzing the conserved axial-vector current and the general structures of the wave functions. Using an analytic model motivated by holography, we show this sum rule is consistent with requirements of chiral symmetry breaking in AdS/QCD. Within this model, we find a remarkable feature of the pion, namely that the density is mostly uniform inside its radius; furthermore, we obtain good agreement with the experimental pion form factor at spacelike momenta.

Ab initio no-core configuration interaction (NCCI) calculations for the nuclear many-body problem have traditionally relied upon an antisymmetrized product (Slater determinant) basis built from harmonic oscillator orbitals. The accuracy of such calculations is limited by the finite dimensions which are computationally feasible for the truncated many-body space. We therefore seek to improve the accuracy obtained for a given basis size by optimizing the choice of single-particle orbitals. Natural orbitals, which diagonalize the one-body density matrix, provide a basis which maximizes the occupation of low-lying orbitals, thus accelerating convergence in a configuration-interaction basis, while also possibly providing physical insight into the single-particle structure of the many-body wave function. We describe the implementation of natural orbitals in the NCCI framework, and examine the nature of the natural orbitals thus obtained, the properties of the resulting many-body wave functions, and the convergence of observables. After taking $^3\mathrm{He}$ as an illustrative testbed, we explore aspects of NCCI calculations with natural orbitals for the ground state of the $p$-shell neutron halo nucleus $^6\mathrm{He}$.

Quantum computing has demonstrated the potential to revolutionize our understanding of nuclear, atomic, and molecular structure by obtaining forefront solutions in non-relativistic quantum many-body theory. In this work, we show that quantum computing can be used to solve for the structure of hadrons, governed by strongly-interacting relativistic quantum field theory. Following our previous work on light unflavored mesons as a relativistic bound-state problem within the nonperturbative Hamiltonian formalism, we present the numerical calculations on simulated quantum devices using the basis light-front quantization (BLFQ) approach. We implement and compare the variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) and the subspace-search variational quantum eigensolver (SSVQE) to find the low-lying mass spectrum of the light meson system and its corresponding light-front wave functions as quantum states from ideal simulators, noisy simulators, and IBM quantum computers. Based on obtained quantum states, we evaluate the meson decay constants and parton distribution functions directly on the quantum circuits. Our calculations on the quantum computers and simulators are in reasonable agreement with accurate numerical solutions solved on classical computers when noises are moderately small, and our overall results are comparable with the available experimental data.

We develop a mechanism to build the light-front wavefunctions (LFWFs) of meson bound states on a small-sized basis function representation. Unlike in a standard Hamiltonian formalism, the Hamiltonian in this method is implicit, and the information of the system is carried directly by the functional form and adjustable parameters of the LFWFs. In this work, we model the LFWFs for four charmonium states, $η_c$, $J/ψ$, $ψ'$, and $ψ(3770)$ as superpositions of orthonormal basis functions. We choose the basis functions as eigenfunctions of an effective Hamiltonian, which has a longitudinal confining potential in addition to the transverse confining potential from light-front holographic QCD. We determine the basis function parameters and superposition coefficients by employing both guidance from the nonrelativistic description of the meson states and the experimental measurements of the meson decay widths. With the obtained wavefunctions, we study the features of those meson states, including charge radii and parton distribution functions. We use the $J/ψ$ LFWF to calculate the meson production in diffractive deep inelastic scattering and ultra-peripheral heavy-ion collisions, and the $η_c$ LFWF to calculate its diphoton transition form factor. Both results show good agreement with experiments. The obtained LFWFs have simple-functional forms and can be readily used to predict additional experimental observables.

We present the generalized parton distributions (GPDs) for the valence quarks of the pion and the kaon in both momentum space and position space within the basis light-front quantization framework. These GPDs are obtained from the eigenvectors of a light-front effective Hamiltonian consisting of the holographic quantum chromodynamics (QCD) confinement potential, a complementary longitudinal confinement potential, and the color-singlet Nambu-Jona--Lasinio interactions for the valence quarks of mesons. We then calculate the generalized form factors of the pion and the kaon from the moments of these GPDs. Combining the tensor form factors with the electromagnetic form factors, we subsequently evaluate the impact parameter dependent probability density of transversely polarized quarks inside the pion and the kaon. The numerical results for the generalized form factors, tensor charges, as well as those for the probability densities and the transverse shift of the polarized densities are consistent with lattice QCD simulations and with chiral quark models.

We produce the light-front wave functions (LFWFs) of the nucleon from a basis light-front ap- proach in the leading Fock sector representation. We solve for the mass eigenstates from a light-front effective Hamiltonian, which includes a confining potential adopted from light-front holography in the transverse direction, a longitudinal confinement, and a one-gluon exchange interaction with fixed coupling. We then employ the LFWFs to obtain the electromagnetic and axial form factors, the par- ton distribution functions (PDFs) and the generalized parton distribution functions for the nucleon. The electromagnetic and axial form factors of the proton agree with the experimental data, whereas the neutron form factors deviate somewhat from the experiments in the low momentum transfer region. The unpolarized, the helicity, and the transversity valence quark PDFs, after QCD scale evolution, are fairly consistent with the global fits to the data at the relevant experimental scales. The helicity asymmetry for the down quark also agrees well with the measurements, however, the asymmetry for the up quark shows a deviation from the data, especially in the small x region. We also find that the tensor charge agrees well with the extracted data and the lattice QCD predictions, while the axial charge is somewhat outside the experimental error bar. The electromagnetic radii of the proton, the magnetic radius of the neutron, and the axial radius are in excellent agreement with the measurements, while the neutron charge radius deviates from experiment.

We report $J^π= 0^+$ ground-state energies and point-proton radii of $^4$He, $^8$Be, $^{12}$C, $^{16}$O and $^{20}$Ne nuclei calculated by the $ab$ $initio$ no-core Monte Carlo shell model with the JISP16 and Daejeon16 nonlocal $NN$ interactions. Ground-state energies are obtained in the basis spaces up to seven oscillator shells ($N_{\rm shell} = 7$) with several oscillator energies ($\hbar ω$) around the optimal oscillator energy for the convergence of ground-state energies. These energy eigenvalues are extrapolated to obtain estimates of converged ground state energies in each basis space using energy variances of computed energy eigenvalues. We further extrapolate these energy-variance-extrapolated energies obtained in the finite basis spaces to infinite basis-space results with an empirical exponential form. This form features a dependence on the basis-space size but is independent of the value of $\hbarω$ used for the harmonic-oscillator basis functions. Point-proton radii for these states of atomic nuclei are also calculated following techniques employed for the energies. From these results, it is found that the Daejeon16 $NN$ interaction provides good agreement with experimental data up to approximately $^{16}$O, while the JISP16 $NN$ interaction provides good agreement with experimental data up to approximately $^{12}$C. Beyond these nuclei, the interactions produce overbinding accompanied by radii that are too small. These findings suggest and encourage further revisions of nonlocal $NN$ interactions towards the investigation of nuclear structure in heavier-mass regions.

The eigenvectors of the light-front effective Hamiltonian provide a good quality description of the pion electromagnetic form factor, decay constant, and the valence quark distribution functions following QCD scale evolution. We also show that the pion's gluon densities can be probed through the pion-nucleus induced $J/ψ$ production data. Our pion parton distribution functions provide excellent agreement with $J/ψ$ production data from widely different experimental conditions.

Background: Solving nuclear many-body problems with an ab initio approach is widely recognized as a computationally challenging problem. Quantum computers offer a promising path to address this challenge. There are urgent needs to develop quantum algorithms for this purpose.
Objective: In this work, we explore the application of the quantum algorithm of adiabatic state preparation with quantum phase estimation in ab initio nuclear structure theory. We focus on solving the low-lying spectra (including both the ground and excited states) of simple nuclear systems.
Ideas: The efficiency of this algorithm is hindered by the emergence of small energy gaps (level crossings) during the adiabatic evolution. In order to improve the efficiency, we introduce techniques to avoid level crossings: 1) by suitable design of the reference Hamiltonian; 2) by insertions of perturbation terms to modify the adiabatic path.
Results: We illustrate this algorithm by solving the deuteron ground state energy and the spectrum of the deuteron bounded in a harmonic oscillator trap implementing the IBM Qiskit quantum simulator. The quantum results agree well the classical results obtained by matrix diagonalization.
Outlook: With our improvements to the efficiency, this algorithm provides a promising tool for investigating the low-lying spectra of complex nuclei on future quantum computers.

We present an analytically solvable 3D light-front Hamiltonian model for hadrons that extends light-front holography by including finite mass quarks and a longitudinal confinement term. We propose that the model is suitable as an improved analytic approximation to QCD at a low resolution scale. We demonstrate that it preserves desired Lorentz symmetries and it produces improved agreement with the experimental mass spectroscopy and other properties of the light mesons. Importantly, the model also respects chiral symmetry and the Gell-Mann-Oakes-Renner relation.

We present a systematic investigation of few-nucleon systems and light nuclei using the current LENPIC interactions comprising semilocal momentum-space regularized two- and three-nucleon forces up to third chiral order (N$^2$LO). Following our earlier study utilizing the coordinate-space regularized interactions, the two low-energy constants entering the three-body force are determined from the triton binding energy and the differential cross section minimum in elastic nucleon-deuteron scattering. Predictions are made for selected observables in elastic nucleon-deuteron scattering and in the deuteron breakup reactions, for properties of the $A=3$ and $A=4$ nuclei, and for spectra of $p$-shell nuclei up to $A = 16$. A comprehensive error analysis is performed including an estimation of correlated truncation uncertainties for nuclear spectra. The obtained predictions are generally found to agree with experimental data within errors. Similar to the coordinate-space regularized chiral interactions at the same order, a systematic overbinding of heavier nuclei is observed, which sets in for $A \sim 10$ and increases with $A$.
