Microscopic studies in heavy nuclei are very scarce due to large valence spaces involved. This computational problem can be avoided by means of the use of symmetry based models. Ground-state, gamma and beta-bands, and their B(E2) transition strengths in 160-168Dy isotopes, are studied in the framework of the pseudo-SU(3) model which includes the preserving symmetry Q.Q term and the symmetry-breaking Nilsson and pairing terms, systematically parametrized. Additionally, three rotor-like terms are considered whose free parameters, fixed for all members of the chain are used to fine tune the moment of inertia of rotational bands and the band-head of gamma and beta-bands. The model succesfully describes in a systematic way rotational features in these nuclei and allows to extrapolate toward the midshell nucleus 170Dy. The results presented show that it is possible to study full chain of isotopes or isotones in the region with the present model.

This high density of low energy states, and particularly their measured B(E2) transition strengths to the first excited 2+ state challenge nuclear models. The pseudo SU(3) model, which successfully describes many excited bands in Dy isotopes, is used to analyze this nuclei. We have fairly good reproduction of most of the states but the absence of actively including nucleons occupying intruders orbits may be the reason for the observed limitations of the model.

Abstract:
The pseudo-SU(3) model has been extensively used to study normal parity bands in even-even and odd-mass heavy deformed nuclei. The use of a realistic Hamiltonian that mixes many SU(3) irreps has allowed for a successful description of energy spectra and electromagnetic transition strengths. While this model is powerful, there are situations in which the intruder states must be taken into account explicitly. The quasi-SU(3) symmetry is expected to complement the model, allowing for a description of nucleons occupying normal and intruder parity orbitals using a unified formalism.

Abstract:
Normal parity bands are studied in 157Gd, 163Dy and 169Tm using the pseudo SU(3) shell model. Energies and B(E2) transition strengths of states belonging to six low-lying rotational bands with the same parity in each nuclei are presented. The pseudo SU(3) basis includes states with pseudo-spin 0 and 1, and 1/2 and 3/2, for even and odd number of nucleons, respectively. States with pseudo-spin 1…

It provides a very efficient basis truncation scheme. It is shown that a small number of SU(3) coupled irreps, those with the largest C_2 values within the direct product of the proton and neutron SU(3) irreps with spin 0 and 1 (for even number of particles), and spin 1/2 and 3/2 for (for odd number of nucleons), are enough to describe the low energy spectra and B(E2) transition strengths of 21Ne, 23Na and 25Mg. A simple but realistic Hamiltonian is employed. Results compare favorably both with experimental data and with full shell model calculations. Limitations and possible improvements of the schematic Hamiltonian are discussed.

The Quasi-SU(3) symmetry was uncovered in full pf and sdg shell-model calculations for both even-even and odd-even nuclei. It manifests itself through a dominance of single-particle and quadrupole-quadrupole terms in the Hamiltonian used to describe well-deformed nuclei. A practical consequence of the quasi-SU(3) symmetry is an efficient basis truncation scheme. In a recent work was shown that when this type of Hamiltonian is diagonalized in an SU(3) basis, only a few irreducible represntations (irreps) of SU(3) are needed to describe the Yrast band, the leading S = 0 irrep augmented with the leading S = 1 irreps in the proton and neutron subspaces. In the present article the quasi-SU(3) truncation scheme is used, in conjunction with a "realistic but schematic" Hamiltonian that includes the most important multipole terms, to describe the energy spectra and B(E2) transition strengths of 20-Ne, 22-Ne, 24-Mg and 28-Si. The effect of the size of the Hilbert space on both sets of observables is discussed, as well as the structure of the Yrast band and the importance of the various terms in the Hamiltonian.

Normal parity bands are built as linear combinations of SU(3) states, which are the direct product of SU(3) proton and neutron states with pseudo spin zero (for even number of nucleons) and pseudo spin 1/2 (for odd number of nucleons). Each of the many-particle states have a well-defined particle number and total angular momentum. The Hamiltonian includes spherical Nilsson single-particle energies, the quadrupole-quadrupole and pairing interactions, as well as three rotor terms which are diagonal in the SU(3) basis. The pseudo SU(3) model is shown to be a powerful tool to describe odd-mass heavy deformed nuclei.
