A particle-triaxial rigid core Hamiltonian is semi-classically treated. The coupling term corresponds to a particle rigidly coupled to the triaxial core, along a direction that does not belong to any principal plane of the inertia ellipsoid. The equations of motion for the angular momentum components provide a sixth-order algebraic equation for one component and subsequently equations for the other two. Linearizing the equations of motion, a dispersion equation for the wobbling frequency is obtained. The equations of motion are also considered in the reduced space of generalized phase space coordinates. Choosing successively the three axes as quantization axis will lead to analytical solutions for the wobbling frequency, respectively. The same analysis is performed for the chirally transformed Hamiltonian. With an illustrative example one identified wobbling states whose frequencies are mirror image to one another. Changing the total angular momentum I, a pair of twin bands emerged. Note that the present formalism conciliates between the two signatures of triaxial nuclei, i.e., they could coexist for a single nucleus.

A triaxial core rotating around the middle axis, i.e. 2-axis, is cranked around the 1-axis, due to the coupling of an odd proton from a high j orbital. Using the Bargmann representation of a new and complex boson expansion of the angular momentum components, the eigenvalue equation of the model Hamiltonian acquires a Schrödinger form with a fully separated kinetic energy. From a critical angular momentum, the potential energy term exhibits three minima, two of them being degenerate. Spectra of the deepest wells reflects a chiral-like structure. Energies corresponding to the deepest and local minima respectively, are analytically expressed within a harmonic approximation. Based on a classical analysis, a phase diagram is constructed. It is also shown that the transverse wobbling mode is unstable. The wobbling frequencies corresponding to the deepest minimum are used to quantitatively describe the wobbling properties in $^{135}$Pr. Both energies and e.m. transition probabilities are described.

The moments of inertia (MoI) of the core for the first three bands are the same, and considered to be free parameters. Due to the core polarization effect caused by the particle-core coupling, the MoI's for TSD4 are different. The energies and the e.m. transitions are quantitatively well described. Also, the phase diagram of the odd system is drawn. In the parameter space, one indicates where the points associated with the fitted parameters are located, which is the region where the transversal wobbling mode might be possible, as well as where the wobbling motion is forbidden.

A unitary description for wobbling motion in even-even and even-odd nuclei is presented. In both cases compact formulas for wobbling frequencies are derived. The accuracy of the harmonic approximation is studied for the yrast as well as for the excited bands in the even-even case. Important results for the structure of the wave function and its behavior inside the two wells of the potential energy function corresponding to the Bargmann representation are pointed out. Applications to $^{158}$Er and $^{163}$Lu reveal a very good agreement with available data. Indeed, the yrast energy levels in the even-even case and the first four triaxial super-deformed bands, TSD1,TSD2,TSD3 and TSD4, are realistically described. Also, the results agree with the data for the E2 and M1 intra- as well as inter-band transitions. Perspectives for the formalism development and an extensive application to several nuclei from various regions of the nuclides chart are presented.

Magnetic and chiral bands have been a hot subject for more than twenty years. Therefore, quite large volumes of experimental data as well as theoretical descriptions have been accumulated. Although some of the formalisms are not so easy to handle, the results agree impressively well with the data. The objective of this paper is to review the actual status of both experimental and theoretical investigations. Aiming at making this material accessible to a large variety of readers, including young students and researchers, I gave some details on the schematic models which are able to unveil the main features of chirality in nuclei. Also, since most formalisms use a rigid triaxial rotor for the nuclear system's core, I devoted some space to the semi-classical description of the rigid triaxial as well as of the tilted triaxial rotor. In order to answer the question whether the chiral phenomenon is spread over the whole nuclear chart and whether it is specific only to a certain type of nuclei, odd-odd, odd-even or even-even, the current results in the mass regions of $A\sim 60,80,100,130,180,200$ are briefly described for all kinds of odd/even-odd/even systems. The chiral geometry is a sufficient condition for a system of proton-particle, neutron-hole and a triaxial rotor to have the electromagnetic properties of chiral bands. In order to prove that such geometry is not unique for generating magnetic bands with chiral features, I presented a mechanism for a new type of chiral bands. One tries to underline the fact that this rapidly develo** field is very successful in pushing forward nuclear structure studies.

The model Hamiltonian is treated in a restricted space consisting of the core projected states associated to the bands ground, $β, γ,\widetildeγ, 1^+$ and $\widetilde{1^+}$ and two proton aligned quasiparticles coupled to the states of the ground band. The chirally transformed particle-core states are also included. The Hamiltonian contains two terms which are not invariant to the chiral transformations relating the right handed trihedral $({\bf J_F}, {\bf J_p}, {\bf J_n})$ and the left handed ones $(-{\bf J_F}, {\bf J_p}, {\bf J_n})$, $({\bf J_F}, -{\bf J_p}, {\bf J_n})$,
$({\bf J_F}, {\bf J_p}, -{\bf J_n})$ where ${\bf J_F}, {\bf J_p}, {\bf J_n}$ are the angular momenta carried by fermions, proton and neutron bosons, respectively. The energies defined with the particle-core states form four chiral bands, two of them being degenerate. Electromagnetic properties of the chiral bands are investigated. The eigenvalue equation associated to the Bohr-Mottelson Hamiltonian is considered in the intrinsic reference frame and amended by replacing the harmonic oscillator potential in the $β$ variable with a sextic oscillator potential with centrifugal barrier plus a periodic potential for the $γ$ variable. After the separation of variables, the $β$ equation is quasi-exactly solved, while the solutions for the $γ$ equation are just the angular spheroidal functions. An anharmonic transition operator is used to determine the reduced E2 transition probabilities. The formalism is conventionally called the Sextic and Spheroidal Approach (SSA) and applied for several X(5) candidate nuclei: $^{176,178,180,188,190}$Os, $^{150}$Nd, $^{170}$W, $^{156}$Dy, $^{166,168}$Hf. The SSA predictions are in good agreement with the experimental data of the mentioned nuclei. The comparison of the SSA results with those yielded by other models, such as X(5) \cite{Iache9}, Infinite Square Well (ISW) \cite{Raduta}, and Davidson (D) like potential \cite{Raduta} for the $β$, otherwise kee** the spheroidal functions for the $γ$, and the Coherent State Model (CSM) \cite{Rad1,Rad2,Rad3,Rad4,RaSa,Rad5} respectively, suggests that SSA represents a good approach to describe nuclei achieving the critical point of the U(5)$\rightarrow$SU(3) shape phase transition.

The space of particle-core states is defined by the angular momentum projection of a quadrupole deformed product state. The backbending phenomena are described by mixing four rotational bands, defined by a set of angular momentum projected states, and a model Hamiltonian describing a set of paired particles moving in a deformed mean field and interacting with a phenomenological deformed core. The ground band corresponds to the configuration where all particles are paired while the other rotational bands are built on one neutron or/and one proton broken pair. The classical and quantal features of a quadrupole coherent state and its projections over angular momentum and boson number are quantitatively analyzed in terms of the departure of the Heisenberg uncertainty relations from the classical limit. This study is performed alternatively for two choices of the pairs of conjugate coordinates. The role of deformation as mediator of classical and quantal behaviors is also commented. Although restoring the rotational and gauge symmetries makes the quantal features manifest dominantly for small deformation, these are blurred by increasing the deformation which pushes the system toward a classical limit.

Analytical formulas for the excitation energies as well as for the electric quadrupole reduced transition probabilities in the ground, beta and gamma bands were derived within the coherent state model for the near vibrational and well deformed nuclei. Numerical calculations were performed for 42 nuclei exhibiting various symmetries and therefore with specific properties. Comparison of the calculation results with the corresponding experimental data shows a good agreement. The parameters involved in the proposed model satisfy evident regularities being interpolated by smooth curves. Few of them, which fall out of the curves, are interpreted as signatures for a critical point in a specific phase transition. This is actually supported also by the figures showing the excitation energy dependence on the angular momentum. The formulas provided for energies and B(E2) values are very simple, being written in a compact form, and therefore easy to be handled to explain the new experimental data.

The mechanism of backbending is semi-phenomenologically investigated based on the hybridization of two rotational bands. These bands are defined by treating a model Hamiltonian describing two interacting subsystems: a set of particles moving in a deformed mean field and interacting among themselves through an effective pairing force and a phenomenological deformed core whose intrinsic ground state is an axially symmetric coherent boson state. The two components interact with each other by a quadrupole-quadrupole and a spin-spin interaction. The total Hamiltonian is considered in the space of states with good angular momentum, projected from a quadrupole deformed product function. The single-particle factor function defines the nature of the rotational bands, one corresponding to the ground band in which all particles are paired and another one built upon a $i_{13/2}$ neutron broken pair. A many body Hamiltonian involving the mean field for a projected spherical single particle basis, the pairing interactions for alike nucleons and the dipole-dipole proton-neutron interactions in the particle-hole ($ph$) and particle-particle ($pp$) channels is treated by the projected gauge fully renormalized proton-neutron quasiparticle random phase approximation (PGFRpnQRPA) approach. The resulting wave functions and energies for the mother and the daughter nuclei are used to calculate the $2νββ$ decay rate and the process half life. For illustration, the formalism is applied for the decay $^{100}$Mo$ \to$ $^{100}$Ru. The results are in good agreement with the corresponding experimental data. The Ikeda sum rule ($ISR$) is obeyed. The gauge projection makes the $pp$ interaction inefficient.

A time dependent variational principle is used to dequantize a second order quadrupole boson Hamiltonian. The classical equations for the generalized coordinate and the constraint for angular momentum are quantized and then analytically solved. A generalized Holmberg-Lipas formula for energies is obtained. A similar $J(J+1)$ dependence is provided by the coherent state model (CSM) in the large deformation regime, by using an expansion in powers of $1/x$ for energies, with $x$ denoting a deformation parameter squared. A simple compact expression is also possible for the near vibrational regime. These three expressions have been used for 44 nuclei covering regions characterized by different dynamic symmetries or in other words belonging to the all known nuclear phases. Nuclei satisfying the specific symmetries of the critical point in the phase transitions $O(6)\to SU(3)$, $SU(5)\to SU(3)$ have been also considered. The agreement between the results and the corresponding experimental data is very good. This is reflected in very small r.m.s. values of deviations.

The core is described by a quadrupole and octupole boson Hamiltonian which was previously used for the description of four positive and four negative parity bands in the neighboring even-even isotopes. The particle-core Hamiltonian consists of four terms: a quadrupole-quadrupole, an octupole-octupole, a spin-spin and a rotational $\hat{I}^2$ interaction, with $\hat {I}$ denoting the total angular momentum. The single particle space for the odd nucleon consists of three spherical shell model states, two of positive and one of negative parity. The product of these states with a collective deformed ground state and the intrinsic gamma band state generate, through angular momentum projection, the bands with $K^π=1/2^{\pm},3/2^{\pm},5/2^{\pm}$, respectively. In the space of projected states one calculates the energies of the considered bands. The resulting excitation energies are compared with the corresponding experimental data as well as with those obtained with other approaches. Also, we searched for some signatures for a static octupole deformation in the considered odd isotopes. The calculated branching ratios in $^{219}$Ra agree quite well with the corresponding experimental data.

Some drawbacks of the X(5) model, as are the eigenfunction periodicity and the $γ$ Hamiltonian hermiticity, are absent in the present approach. Results of numerical applications to $^{150}$Nd, $^{154}$Gd and $^{192}$Os are in good agreement to the experimental data. The influence of the nuclear deformation and of angular momentum projection on the charge density is investigated. The monopole transition amplitude has been calculated for ten nuclei. The results are compared with some previous theoretical studies and with the available experimental data. Our results concerning angular momentum projection are consistent with those of previous microscopic calculations for the ground state density. The calculations for the E0 transitions agree quite well with the experimental data. A sixth-order quadrupole boson Hamiltonian is used to describe the states $0^+$ and $2^+$ identified in several nuclei by various types of experiments. Two alternative descriptions of energy levels are proposed. One corresponds to a semi-classical approach of the model Hamiltonian while the other one provides the exact eigenvalues. Both procedures yield close formulas for energies. The first procedure involves four parameters, while the second involves a compact formula with five parameters. In each case the parameters are fixed by a least-square fit procedure. Applications are performed for eight even-even nuclei.
Both methods yield results which are in a surprisingly good agreement with the experimental data. We give also our predicted reduced transition probabilities within the two approaches, although the corresponding experimental data are not yet available.

Signatures for a static octupole deformation in some states of the dipole bands are pointed out. Some properties which distinguish between the dipole band states and states of the same parity but belonging to other bands are mentioned. A sixth order quadrupole boson Hamiltonian is treated through a time dependent variational principle approach choosing as trial function a coherent state with respect to zeroth $b^{\dagger}_0$ and second $b^{\dagger}_2+b^{\dagger}_{-2}$ components of the quadrupole bosons. The coefficients involved in the model Hamiltonian are chosen so that the classical effective potential energy term has two distinct minima. The equation of motion for the radial coordinate is analytically solved and the resulting trajectories are extensively studied. One distinguishes three energy regions exhibiting different types of trajectories. When one passes from the region characterized by two wells to the region of energies higher than the maximum value of the effective potential the trajectories period exhibits a singularity which reflects a phase transition. The classical trajectories are quantized by a constraint similar to the Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization condition. The semiclassical spectra corresponding to the two potential wells have specific properties. The tunneling process through the potential barrier is also studied. The transmission coefficients exhibit jumps in magnitude when the angular momentum acquires certain values.

Using a schematic solvable many-body Hamiltonian, one studies a new type of proton-neutron excitations within a time dependent variational approach. Classical equations of motion are linearized and subsequently solved analytically. The harmonic state energy is compared with the energy of the first excited state provided by diagonalization as well as with the energies obtained by a renormalized RPA and a boson expansion procedure. The new collective mode describes a wobbling motion, in the space of isospin, and collapses for a particle-particle interaction strength which is much larger than the physical value. A suggestion for the description of the system in the second nuclear phase is made. We identified the transition operators which might excite the new mode from the ground state.

We count the number of pairs in the single j-shell model of {44}Ti for various interactions. For a state of total angular momentum I, the wave function can be written in terms of the probability amplitude D(Jp Jn) that the protons couple to Jp and the neutrons to Jn. For I=0 there are three states with (I=0,T=0) and one with (I=0,T=2). The latter is the double analog of {44}Ca. In that case (T=2), the magnitude of D(JJ) is the same as that of a corresponding two-particle fractional parentage coefficient. In counting the number of pairs with an even angular momentum J, we find a new relationship obtained by diagonalizing a unitary nine-j symbol. We are also able to get results for the `no-interaction' case for T=0 states, for which it is found, e.g., that there are less (J=1,T=0) pairs than on the average. Relative to this `no-interaction case', we find for the most realistic interaction used that there is an enhancement of pairs with angular momentum J=0,2,1 and 7, and a depletion for the others. Also considered are interactions in which only the (J=0,T=1) pair state is at lower energy, only the (J=1,T=0) pair state is lowered and where both are equally lowered, as well as the QQ interaction. We are also able to obtain simplified formulae for the number of J=0 pairs for the I=0 states in {46}Ti and {48}Ti by noting that the unique state with isospin |Tz|+2 is orthogonal to all the states with isospin |Tz|.

A many-body Hamiltonian describing a system of Z protons and N neutrons moving in spherical shell model mean field and interacting among themselves through proton-proton and neutron-neutron pairing and a dipole-dipole proton-neutron interaction of both particle-hole and particle-particle type, is treated within a fully renormalized (FR) pnQRPA approach. Two decoupling schemes are formulated. One of them decouples the equations of motion of particle total number conserving and non-conserving operators. One ends up with two very simple dispersion equations for phonon operators which are formally of Tamm-Dancoff types. For excitations in the (N-1,Z+1) system, Ikeda sum rule is fully satisfied provided the BCS equations are renormalized as well and therefore solved at a time with the FRpnQRPA equations. Next, one constructs two operators ${\cal R}^{\dagger}_{1μ}$, ${\cal R}_{1,-μ}(-)^{1-μ}$ which commutes with the particle total number conserving operators, ${\cal A}^{\dagger}_{1μ}$ and ${\cal A}_{1,-μ}(-)^{1-μ}$, and moreover could be renormalized so that they become bosons. Then, a phonon operator is built up as a linear combination of these four operators. The FRpnQRPA equations are written down for this complex phonon operator and the ISR is calculated analytically. This formalism allows for an unified description of the dipole excitations in four neighboring nuclei (N-1,Z+1),(N+1,Z-1),(N-1,Z-1),(N+1,Z+1). The phonon vacuum describes the (N,Z) system ground state.

Using an angular momentum projected single particle basis, a pnQRPA approach is used to study the $2νββ$ properties of ten isotopes, exhibiting various quadrupole deformations. The mother and daughter nuclei exhibit different quadrupole deformations. Since the projected basis enables a unified description of deformed and spherical nuclei, situations where the nuclei involved in the double beta decay process are both spherical, both deformed or one spherical and another deformed, can be treated through a sole formalism. Dependence of single $β^-$ and $β^+$ strength distribution on atomic mass number and nuclear deformation is analyzed. For the double beta decay process, the Gamow-Teller transition amplitudes and half lives are calculated. Comparing the present results with those of E(5) symmetry, it is conspicuous that the present formalism add corrections to the E(5) formalism by bringing the predictions closer to the experimental data. However, no analytical expression for the degeneracy $d_v(I)$ of the $R_{2k+1}$'s IR, determined by the reduction $R_{2k+1}\supset R_3$, is available. Thus, the number of distinct values taken by $α_k$ has been so far obtained by solving some complex equations. Here we derive analytical expressions for the degeneracy $d_v(I)$ characterizing the octupole and quadrupole boson states, respectively. The merit of this work consists of the fact that it completes the analytical expressions for the $2^k$-pole boson basis.

The advantage of the present procedure over the ones using a deformed Woods Saxon or Nilsson single particle basis is that the actual pnQRPA states have a definite angular momentum while all the others provide states having only K as a good quantum number. The model Hamiltonian involves a mean field term yielding the projected single particle states, a pairing interaction for alike nucleons and a dipole-dipole proton-neutron interaction in both the particle-hole (ph) and particle-particle (pp) channels. The effect of nuclear deformation on the single beta strength distribution as well as on the double beta Gamow-Teller transition amplitude (M$_{\rm GT}$) is analyzed. The results are compared with the existent data and with the results from a different approach, in terms of the process half life T$_{1/2}$. We count the number of pairs in the single $j-$shell model of $^{44}$Ti for various interactions. For a state of total angular momentum $I$, the wave function can be written as $Ψ=\sum_{J_P J_N} D(J_P J_N) [(j^2)_{J_P}(j^2)_{J_N}]_I$, where $D(J_P J_N)$ is the probability amplitude that the protons couple to $J_P$ and the neutrons to $J_N$. For I=0 there are three states with ($I=0, T=0$) and one with ($I=0, T=2$). The latter is the double analog of $^{44}$Ca. In that case (T=2), the magnitude of $D(JJ)$ is the same as that of a corresponding two particle fractional parentage coefficient. In counting the number of pairs with an even angular momentum $J_A$ we find a new relationship obtained by diagonalizing a unitary nine-j symbol. We are also able to get results for the 'no-interaction' case for T=0 states, for which it is found that there are less ($J=1, T=0$) pairs than on the average. Relative to this 'no-interaction case' we find for the most realistic interaction used that there is an enhancement of pairs with angular momentum $J_A=0,2,1$ and 7, and a depletion for the others. Also considered are interactions in which only the ($J=0, T=1$) pair state is at lower energy, only the ($J=1, T=0$) pair state is lowered and where both are equally lowered.

A projection procedure for generalized BCS states has been used. As an alternative description a particle-core formalism is presented. The latter picture provides a two-parameter expression for excitation energies, which describes fairly well the data in four odd and three even isotopes of Ti.

Abstract:
We study the response of isovector orbital magnetic dipole (IOMD) transitions to the quadrupole-quadrupole ($Q \cdot Q$) interaction, to the isospin-conserving pairing interaction (ICP) and to combinations of both. We find qualitatively different behaviours for transitions in which the final isospin differs from the initial isospin versus cases where the two isospins are the same. For $N=Z$ even…

For $N=Z$ even-even nuclei with $J^π=0^+, T=0$ ground states such as $^8Be$ and $^{20}Ne$, the summed $T=0 \to T=1$ IOMD from the ground state to all the $J=1, T=1$ states in the $0 \hbar ω$ space does not vanish when the $Q \cdot Q$ interaction is turned off. The pairing interaction (ICP) alone leads to a finite transition rate. For nuclei with $J=0^+, T=1$ ground states such as $^{10}Be$ and $^{22}Ne$, the summed $T=1 \to T=1$ IOMD $does$ vanish when the $Q \cdot Q$ interaction is turned off, as is expected in a good scissors-mode behaviour. However this is not the case for the corresponding sum of the $T=1 \to T=2$ IOMD transitions. In $^{22}Ne$ (but not in $^{10}Be$) the sum of the $T=1 \to T=2$ IOMD transitions is remarkably insensitive to the strengths of both the $Q \cdot Q$ and the ICP interactions. In $^{22}Ne$ an energy weighted-sum is similarly insensitive. All our calculations were carried out in the $0 \hbar ω$ space.

Abstract:
We study sum rules for charge exchange operators of the Gamow-Teller and Fermi type and explore what can be learned from them about proton-neutron pairing in T=0 and T=1 channels. We consider both energy weighted (EWSR) and non-energy weighted (NEWSR) sum rules. We use a schematic Hamiltonian to stress the distinctive roles of T=1 and T=0 pair interactions and correlations in the sum rules. Nume…

We consider two different methods to construct the quasiparticle basis, a selfconsistent approach based on a deformed Hartree-Fock calculation with density-dependent Skyrme forces and a more phenomenological approach based on a deformed Woods-Saxon potential. Both methods contain pairing correlations in the BCS approach. We discuss the sensitivity of Gamow-Teller strength distributions to the deformed mean field and residual interactions.

Three exactly solvable Hamiltonians of complex structure are studied in the framework of a semi-classical approach. The quantized trajectories for intrinsic coordinates correspond to energies which may be classified in collective bands. For two of the chosen Hamiltonians the symmetry SU2xSU2 is the appropriate one to classify the eigenvalues in the laboratory frame. Connections of results presented here with the molecular spectrum and Moszkowski model are pointed out. The present approach suggests that the intrinsic states, which in standard formalisms are heading rotational bands, are forming themselves "rotational" bands, the rotations being performed in a fictious boson space.

The coherent state model (CSM) is extended so that three negative parity bands are treated on equal footing with three positive parity bands. The six rotational bands are generated by projecting out angular momenta and parities from three intrisic orthogonal states which exhibit both quadrupole and octupole deformations. The projected states are, by construction, mutually orthogonal. In the space of projected states, a sub-space of a quadrupole and octupole multi-boson states, an effective quadrupole and octupole boson Hamiltonian is solved. The eigenstates of the model Hamiltonian are linked by multipole transition operators for which lowest order boson expressions are considered. The calculations involve 6 structure coefficients and two deformation parameters. All of them are fixed by a least square fit of the known experimental energies. Applications are made to Gd158, Yb172, Ra218, Ra226, Th232, U238, Pu238. Very good agreement is obtained for both excitation energies and transition probabilities. New signatures for octupole deformation, manifested in excited bands, are pointed out.
