The mirror energy difference (MED) of the mirror state, especially for states bearing the Thomas-Erhman shift, serves as a sensitive probe of isospin symmetry breaking. We employ the Gamow shell model, which includes the inter-nucleon correlation and continuum coupling, to investigate the MED for $sd$-shell nuclei by taking the $^{18}$Ne/$^{18}$O and $^{19}$Na/$^{19}$O as examples. Our GSM provides good descriptions for the excitation energies and MEDs for the $^{18}$Ne/$^{18}$O and $^{19}$Na/$^{19}$O. Moreover, our calculations also reveal that the large MED of the mirror states is caused by the significant occupation of the weakly bound or unbound $s_{1/2}$ waves, giving the radial density distribution of the state in the proton-rich nucleus more extended than that of mirror states in deeply-bound neutron-rich nuclei. Furthermore, our GSM calculation shows that the contribution of Coulomb is different for the low-lying states in proton-rich nuclei, which significantly contributes to MEDs of mirror states. Moreover, the contributions of the nucleon-nucleon interaction are different for the mirror state, especially for the state of proton-rich nuclei bearing the Thomas-Erhman shift, which also contributes to the significant isospin symmetry breaking with large MED.

We provide an investigation of the spectroscopic factor of resonance states in $A =5-8$ nuclei, utilizing the Gamow shell model (GSM). Within the GSM, the configuration mixing is taken into account exactly with the shell model framework, and the continuum coupling is addressed via the complex-energy Berggren ensemble, which treats bound, resonance, and non-resonant continuum single-particle states on an equal footing. As a result, both the configuration mixing and continuum coupling are meticulously considered in the GSM. We first calculate the low-lying states of helium isotopes and isotones with the GSM, and the results are compared with that of \textit{ab initio} no-core shell model (NCSM) calculations. The results indicate that GSM can reproduce the low-lying resonance states more accurately than the no-core shell model. Following this, we delve into the spectroscopic factors of the resonance states as computed through both GSM and NCSM, concurrently conducting systematic calculations of overlap functions pertinent to these resonance states. Finally, the calculated overlap function and spectroscopic factor of $^6$He$(0_1^+)$ $\otimes νp_{3/2} \to $ $^7$He$(3/2_1^-)$ with GSM are compared with the results from \textit{ab initio} NCSM, variational Monte Carlo, and Green's function Monte Carlo calculations, as well as avaliable experimental data. The results assert that wave function asymptotes can only be reproduced in GSM, where resonance and continuum coupling are precisely addressed.

Nuclei in the vicinity of driplines have been receiving a lot of attention in nuclear structure studies. In the nuclei, the continuum coupling is crucial in reproducing weakly-bound and unbound phenomena. To calculate observables of the nuclei as open quantum systems, we have developed valence-space effective operators in the complex-energy Berggren basis using many-body perturbation theory. We focus on the Gamow-Teller $β$ decay in the {\it sd} shell. The two- plus three-nucleon force from the chiral effective field theory (EFT), named EM1.8/2.0, has been used. The Gamow shell model which takes the continuum coupling into account can properly reproduce experimental observations of weakly-bound and unbound states. The $β$-decay isospin asymmetry between the dripline nucleus $^{22}\rm Si$ and its mirror partner $^{22}\rm O$ is reproduced, in which the $s_{1/2}$ continuum plays a key role. Significant Thomas-Ehrman shift is seen through mirror energy differences between the mirror daughters $^{22}\rm Al$ and $^{22}\rm F$, in which the continuum effect plays an important role.

The evolution of channel amplitudes and the alignment of the many-body state with the decay channel in the vicinity of the channel threshold is studied for selected states. The GSM-CC in multi-mass partition formulation applied to a translationally invariant Hamiltonian with an effective finite-range two-body interaction reproduce well the spectra of $^7$Be, $^7$Li, $^8$Be and elastic scattering reactions: $^4$He($^3$He, $^3$He)$^4$He, $^4$He($^3$H, $^3$H)$^4$He. Detailed analysis of the dependence of reaction channel amplitudes on the distance from the particle decay threshold allowed to demonstrate the alignment of the wave function in the vicinity of the decay threshold. This analysis also demonstrates the appearance of clustering in the GSM-CC wave function in the vicinity of the cluster decay threshold. We demonstrated that GSM formulated in the basis of reaction channels including both cluster and proton/neutron channels allows to describe both the spectra of nuclei with low-energy cluster thresholds and the low-energy elastic scattering reactions with proton, $^3$H, and $^3$He projectiles. Studying dependence of the reaction channel amplitude in a many-body state on distance from the threshold, we showed an evolution of the $^3$He, $^4$He clustering with increasing separation energy from the cluster decay threshold and demonstrated a mechanism of the alignment of many-body wave function with the decay threshold, i.e. the microscopic reorganization of the wave function in the vicinity of the cluster decay threshold which leads to the appearance of clustering in this state.

The recent precise experimental determination of the monopole transition form factor from the ground state of $^4$He to its $0^+_2$ resonance via electron scattering has reinvigorated discussions about the nature of this first excited state of the $α$ particle. The $0^+_2$ state has been traditionally interpreted in the literature as the isoscalar monopole resonance (breathing mode) or, alternatively, as a particle-hole shell-model excitation. To better understand the nature of this state, which lies only $\sim$ 410 keV above the proton emission threshold, we employ the coupled-channel representation of the no-core Gamow shell model. By considering the $[^3$H$ + p]$, $[^3$He$ + n]$, and $[^2$H+$^2$H] reaction channels, we explain the excitation energy and monopole form-factor of the $0^+_2$ state. We argue that the continuum coupling strongly impacts the nature of this state, which carries characteristics of the proton decay threshold.

Although they are part of the lightest nuclei, the hydrogen isotopes are not well understood both experimentally and theoretically. Indeed, besides deuteron and triton, all known hydrogen isotopes are resonances of complex structure. Even more elusive is 7H, which may have been observed experimentally and has been claimed to be a narrow resonance. Nevertheless, even its existence is controversial, and its theoretical study is difficult due to both its unbound character and large number of interacting valence nucleons. It is then the object of this paper to theoretically study the hydrogen isotopes {4-7}H with the Gamow shell model, which is, up to our knowledge, the first direct calculation of unbound resonance hydrogen isotopes up to 7H. As the Gamow shell model includes both continuum coupling and inter-nucleon correlations, useful information can be obtained about poorly known unbound hydrogen isotopes. Our present calculations indicate that {4,6}H ground states are fairly broad resonances, whereas those of {5,7}H are narrow, which is in accordance with current experimental data. The results then suggest that, in particular, {5,7}H should be more heavily studied, as they might well be among the most narrow neutron resonances of the light nuclear chart.

Spectroscopic factors involving well bound nucleons in light nuclei are calculated with standard shell model, no-core shell model and Gamow shell model. Continuum coupling is included exactly in the Gamow shell model, due to the use of the Berggren basis, which contains bound, resonance and scattering states. Conversely, it is absent from standard and no-core shell models, where a basis of harmonic oscillator states is used. As the A - 1 nuclei for which spectroscopic factors are calculated are either weakly bound or unbound, coupling to continuum is prominent, even though the A nuclei are well bound. It is then showed that Gamow shell model can properly reproduce experimental data and is a predictive tool for detailed nuclear structure at drip-line, contrary to standard and no-core shell model.

Isospin-symmetry breaking is responsible for the energy difference of excited states in mirror nuclei. It also influences the coefficient of the isobaric multiplet mass equation. In the present work, we extensively investigate isospin-symmetry breaking in medium mass nuclei within ab initio frameworks. For this, we employ the ab initio valence-space in-medium similarity renormalization group approach, in which charge-symmetry and charge-independence breakings are included in the adopted nuclear force. The mirror energies of sd- and pf- shell nuclei are computed for that matter. The effects of single-particle states on weakly bound and unbound nuclear states, especially those of the s-wave, are discussed. Predictions are also made concerning proton drip-line nuclei bearing large mirror energy difference. Finally, the coefficient of the isobaric multiplet mass equation in T = 1/2 and T = 1 isospin multiplets for A = 18 to A = 76 is calculated.

Transfer reactions are essential to determine spectroscopic factors and astrophysical reaction rates. However, their theoretical evaluation is typically effected using standard reaction theory, from which structure degrees of freedom are absent. While reaction cross sections have been implemented in the frame of the no-core shell model with continuum, this model can be applied in practice only to the lightest nuclei. The use of the core + valence nucleon picture is then necessary to include inter-nucleon correlations in reaction cross sections involving medium nuclei. For this, we will use the recently developed coupled-channel Gamow Shell Model (GSM-CC) for direct reactions and extend it to the evaluation of transfer cross sections. As an example, we will study the ${ { }^{ 40 } }$Ca(d,p) transfer reaction with GSM-CC. Experimental data can be successfully reproduced, but at the price of the use of a very phenomenological Hamiltonian.

Such an elaborated {\it ab initio} Gamow shell model with both continuum coupling and 3NF included can properly treat the many-body correlations of weakly bound and unbound nuclei. The mirror partners of $^{16}$F and $^{16}$N exhibit different level orders in their excitation spectra, which can be well explained by the inclusion of 3NF in the calculation. The isospin asymmetry between the mirror partners $^{16}$Ne and $^{16}$C was studied in detail by insight into their configuration structures. The interplay between 3NF and the continuum coupling is discussed in the weakly bound and unbound nuclear states.

In the astrophysical environment of high temperature, the proton capture of $^8$B can be faster than its beta decay, thus $^8$B$(p,γ)$$^9$C reaction plays an important role in the hot $pp$ chain. Due to the unstable nature of $^8$B and the lack of the $^8$B beam, the measurement of $^8$B$(p,γ)$$^9$C reaction can only be achieved by the indirect method, and large uncertainties exist. The Gamow shell model in the coupled-channel representation (GSM-CC) is applied to study the proton radiative capture reaction $^8$B$(p,γ)$$^9$C. For the calculation of the $^8$B$(p,γ)$$^9$C astrophysical factors, all E1, M1, and E2 transitions from the initial continuum states to the final bound states ${3/2}_1^-$of $^9$C are considered. The resonant capture to the first resonant state ${1/2}_1^-$ of $^{9}$C is also calculated. The experimental low-energy levels and the proton emission threshold in $^9$C are reproduced by the GSM-CC. The calculated astrophysical factors agrees with the existed experimental data from the indirect measurements. The reaction rates from the direct capture and resonant capture are calculated for the temperature range of astrophysical interest. The calculated total astrophysical $S$ factor is dominated by the E1 transition to the ground state of $^9$C. The GSM-CC calculations suggest that $S$ first increase with the energy of the center of mass $E_{\rm c.m.}$, and then decrease with the energy. This agrees with the existing data, which has smaller values at around zero energy and larger value in the energy range of 0.2 MeV $\leq E_{\rm c.m.} \leq$ 0.6 MeV.

We have applied the Gamow shell model to calculate nuclear observables of $^{26-31}$Ne isotopes pertaining to one-neutron halo structure, these nuclei being situated close to neutron drip-line. As both many-body correlations and continuum coupling are taken into account in that approach, halo structure can be analyzed properly. Our calculations provide good descriptions of $^{26-31}$Ne, where asymptotic behavior is crucial for that matter. One-body density, neutron root-mean-square radii of $^{26-31}$Ne, and one-neutron overlap functions of $^{29,31}$Ne have been calculated as well. Our results support the presence of a one-neutron \textit{p}-wave halo in $^{31}$Ne, already pointed out experimentally. A similar situation also occurs in the ground state of $^{29}$Ne, which is mainly a \textit{p}-wave valence neutron coupled to the inner $^{28}$Ne \textit{core}. The $3/2^+$ excited state of $^{29}$Ne, which is dominated by a \textit{d}-wave valence neutron, has also been considered. A larger radius and more extended wave function occur for the ground state of $^{29}$Ne when compared to its $3/2^+$ first excited state. The present results suggest that $^{29}$Ne is a good candidate for one-neutron \textit{p}-wave halo in the medium-mass region.

The $^8$Li$(n,γ)$$^9$Li reaction plays a critical role in several reaction chains leading to the nucleosynthesis of $A>12$ nuclei. Due to unstable nature of $^8$Li and the unavailability of neutron targets, direct measurements of this reaction are exceedingly difficult. Only upper limits of this cross section, provided by the indirect experiments, have been obtained so far. In this work, we use the Gamow shell model (GSM) in the coupled-channel representation (GSM-CC) to study the properties of $^9$Li and the radiative capture reaction $^8$Li$(n,γ)$$^9$Li. In GSM-CC calculations, a translationally invariant Hamiltonian is used with a finite-range two-body interaction tuned to reproduce the low-energy spectra of $^{8-9}$Li. In the calculation of $^8$Li$(n,γ)$$^9$Li cross section, all relevant E1, M1, and E2 transitions from the initial continuum states to the final bound states ${3/2}_1^-$, ${1/2}_1^-$ and the resonance ${5/2}_1^-$ of $^9$Li are included. The GSM-CC approach reproduces the experimental low-energy spectrum, neutron emission threshold, and spectroscopic factors in $^9$Li. The calculated reaction rate is consistent with the experimental upper limit of the reaction rate obtained in the indirect measurements at stellar energies. The GSM-CC calculations suggest that the $^8$Li$(n,γ)$$^9$Li reaction can reduce heavy-element production via the main chain $^7$Li($n,γ$)$^8$Li($α,n$)$^{11}$B($n,γ$)$^{12}$B($β^+$)$^{12}$C. Major contribution to the calculated cross section is given by the direct E1 transition to the ground state of $^8$Li. The contribution of excited states to the reaction rate does not exceed $\sim$18% of the total reaction rate.

The structure of the unbound $^{15}$F nucleus is investigated using the inverse kinematics resonant scattering of a radioactive $^{14}$O beam im**ing on a CH$_2$ target. The analysis of $^{1}$H($^{14}$O,p)$^{14}$O and $^{1}$H($^{14}$O,2p)$^{13}$N reactions allowed the confirmation of the previously observed narrow $1/2^{-}$ resonance, near the two-proton decay threshold, and the identification of two new narrow 5/2$^{-}$ and 3/2$^{-}$ resonances. The newly observed levels decay by 1p emission to the ground of $^{14}$O, and by sequential 2p emission to the ground state (g.s.) of $^{13}$N via the $1^-$ resonance of $^{14}$O. Gamow shell model (GSM) analysis of the experimental data suggests that the wave functions of the 5/2$^{-}$ and 3/2$^{-}$ resonances may be collectivized by the continuum coupling to nearby 2p- and 1p- decay channels. The observed excitation function $^{1}$H($^{14}$O,p)$^{14}$O and resonance spectrum in $^{15}$F are well reproduced in the unified framework of the GSM.

The present situation is that experiments so far have not given consistent data on the resonances. Few-body calculations have well studied the scatterings of the $4N$ systems. In the present work, we provide many-body calculations of the broad resonance structures, in an \textit{ab initio} framework with modern realistic interactions. It occurs that, indeed, $^4$H, $^4$Li and excited $^4$He are broad resonances, which is in accordance with experimental observations. The calculations also show that the first $1^-$ excited state almost degenerates with the $2^-$ ground state in the pair of mirror isobars of $^4$H and $^4$Li, which may suggest that the experimental data on energy and width are the mixture of the ground state and the first excited state. The $T = 1$ isospin triplet formed with an excited state of $^4$He and ground states of $^4$H and $^4$Li is studied, focusing on the effect of isospin symmetry breaking.

In most nuclear many-body methods, observables are calculated using many-body wave functions explicitly. The variational two-particle reduced density matrix method is one of the few exceptions to the rule. Ground-state energies of both closed-shell and open-shell nuclear systems can indeed be evaluated by minimizing a constrained linear functional of the two-particle reduced density matrix. However, it has virtually never been used in nuclear theory, because nuclear ground states were found to be well overbound, contrary to those of atoms and molecules. Consequently, we introduced new constraints in the nuclear variational two-particle reduced density matrix method, developed recently for atomic and molecular systems. Our calculations then show that this approach can provide a proper description of nuclear systems where only valence neutrons are included. For the nuclear systems where both neutrons and protons are active, however, the energies obtained with the variational two-particle reduced density matrix method are still overbound. The possible reasons for the noticed discrepancies and solutions to this problem will be discussed.

Proton-rich nuclei possess unique properties in the nuclear chart. Due to the presence of both continuum coupling and Coulomb interaction, phenomena such as halos, Thomas-Ehrman shift, and proton emissions can occur. Experimental data are difficult to be obtained therein, so that theoretical calculations are needed to understand nuclei at drip-lines and guide experimentalists for that matter. In particular, the $^{16}$Ne and $^{18}$Mg isotopes are supposed to be one-proton and/or two-proton emitting nuclei, but associated experimental data are either incomplete or even unavailable. Consequently, we performed Gamow shell model calculations of carbon isotones bearing $A=15\text{-}18$. Isospin-symmetry breaking occurring in carbon isotones and isotopes is also discussed. It is hereby shown that the mixed effects of continuum coupling and Coulomb interaction at drip-lines generate complex patterns in isospin multiplets. Added to that, it is possible to determine the one-proton and two-proton widths of $^{16}$Ne and $^{18}$Mg. Obtained decay patterns are in agreement with those obtained in previous experimental and theoretical works. Moreover, up to the knowledge of authors, this is the first theoretical calculation of binding energy and partial decay widths of $^{18}$Mg in a configuration interaction picture.

In the present work, we study neutron-dripline oxygen isotopes. It is hereby demonstrated that the presence of continuum coupling is important for the description of oxygen isotopes at dripline, and especially to assess the eventual bound or unbound character of $^{28}$O. Our results suggest that the ground state of $^{28}$O is weakly unbound and is similar to the narrow resonant $^{26}$O ground state. Predictions of weakly bound and resonance excited states in $^{24\text-26}$O are also provided. The asymptotes of the studied many-body states are analyzed via one-body densities, whereby the different radial properties of well bound, loosely bound, resonance states are clearly depicted.

We study a problem of $π$ production in heavy ion collisions in the context of the Isospin-dependent Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck (IBUU) transport model. We generated nucleon densities using two different models, the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock (SHF) model and configuration interaction shell model (SM). Indeed, inter-nucleon correlations are explicitly taken into account in SM, while they are averaged in the SHF model. As an application of our theoretical frameworks, we calculated the $π^{-}$ and $π^{+}$ yields in collisions of nuclei with $A = 30-40$ nucleons. We used different harmonic oscillator lengths $b_{HO}$ to generate the harmonic oscillator basis for SM in order to study both theoretical and experimental cases. It is found that SM framework with $b_{HO}$ = 2.5 fm and SHF can be distinguished by the yield of $π$ mesons, in this case the density distribution calculated by the shell model produces more $π$ in the collision. In comparison, SM with $b_{HO}$ = 2.0 fm is characterized from SHF by the double $π^{-}/π^{+}$ ratios with different large impact parameters, from which one can find the double $π^{-}/π^{+}$ ratios of SM change smoother and are less than those of SHF.

Starting from chiral two-nucleon (2NF) and chiral three-nucleon (3NF) potentials, we present a detailed study of 17Ne, a Borromean system, with the Gamow shell model which can capture continuum effects. More precisely, we take advantage of the normal-ordering approach to include the 3NF and the Berggren representation to treat bound, resonant and continuum states on equal footing in a complex-momentum plane. In our framework, 3NF is essential to reproduce the Borromean structure of 17Ne, while the continuum is more crucial for the halo property of the nucleus. The two-proton halo structure is demonstrated by calculating the valence proton density and correlation density. The astrophysically interesting $3/2^-$ excited state has its energy above the threshold of the proton emission, and therefore the two-proton decay should be expected from the state.

Background: Weakly bound and unbound nuclei close to particle drip lines are laboratories of new nuclear structure physics at the extremes of neutron/proton excess. The comprehensive description of these systems requires an open quantum system framework that is capable of treating resonant and nonresonant many-body states on equal footing. Purpose: In this work, we construct the minimal complex-energy configuration interaction approach to describe binding energies and spectra of selected 5 $\leq$ A $\leq$ 11 nuclei. Method: We employ the complex-energy Gamow shell model (GSM) assuming a rigid $^4$He core. The effective Hamiltonian, consisting of a core-nucleon Woods-Saxon potential and a simplified version of the Furutani-Horiuchi-Tamagaki interaction with the mass-dependent scaling, is optimized in the sp space. To diagonalize the Hamiltonian matrix, we employ the Davidson method and the Density Matrix Renormalization Group technique. Results: Our optimized GSM Hamiltonian offers a good reproduction of binding energies and spectra with the root-mean-square (rms) deviation from experiment of 160 keV. Since the model performs well when used to predict known excitations that have not been included in the fit, it can serve as a reliable tool to describe poorly known states. A case in point is our prediction for the pair of unbound mirror nuclei $^{10}$Li-$^{10}$N in which a huge Thomas-Ehrman shift dramatically alters the pattern of low-energy excitations. Conclusion: The new model will enable comprehensive studies of structure and reactions aspects of light drip-line nuclei.

Gamow shell model (GSM) is usually performed within the Woods-Saxon (WS) basis in which the WS parameters need to be determined by fitting experimental single-particle energies including their resonance widths. In the multi-shell case, such a fit is difficult due to the lack of experimental data of cross-shell single-particle energies and widths. In this paper, we develop an {\it ab-initio} GSM by introducing the Gamow Hartree-Fock (GHF) basis that is obtained using the same interaction as the one used in the construction of the shell-model Hamiltonian. GSM makes use of the complex-momentum Berggren representation, then including resonance and continuum components. Hence, GSM gives a good description of weakly bound and unbound nuclei. Starting from chiral effective field theory and employing many-body perturbation theory (MBPT) (called nondegenerate $\hat Q$-box folded-diagram renormalization) in the GHF basis, a multi-shell Hamiltonian ({\it sd-pf} shells in this work) can be constructed. The single-particle energies and their resonance widths can also been obtained using MBPT. We investigated $^{23-28}$O and $^{23-31}$F isotopes, for which multi-shell calculations are necessary. Calculations show that continuum effects and the inclusion of the {\it pf} shell are important elements to understand the structure of nuclei close to and beyond driplines.

Our results indicate that trineutron and tetraneutron are both unbound and bear broad widths. The calculated energy and width of tetraneutron are also comparable with recent experimental data. Moreover, our calculations suggest that the energy of trineutron is lower than that of tetraneutron, while its resonance width is also narrower. This strongly suggests that trineutron is more likely to be experimentally observed than tetraneutron. We thus suggest experimentalists to search for trineutron at low energy.

As the first application of this generalized GSM-CC approach, we describe the structure of 6Li and deuteron - $α$-particle elastic scattering using the same effective Furutani-Horiuchi-Tamagaki (FHT) type nucleon-nucleon interaction. Asymptotically, the deuteron structure including its continuum is described using the N3LO chiral force. Two-proton removal from 22N populated a prominent resonance-like structure in 20B at around 2.5 MeV above the one-neutron decay threshold, which is interpreted as arising from the closely spaced 1-,2- ground-state doublet predicted by the shell model. In the case of proton removal from 22C, the 19B plus one- and two-neutron channels were consistent with the population of a resonance in 21B 2.47+-0.19 MeV above the two-neutron decay threshold, which is found to exhibit direct two-neutron decay. The structure of weakly bound and unbound nuclei close to particle drip lines is one of the major science drivers of nuclear physics. A comprehensive understanding of these systems goes beyond the traditional configuration interactions approach formulated in the Hilbert space of localized states (nuclear shell model) and requires an open quantum system description. The complex-energy Gamow Shell Model (GSM) provides such a framework as it is capable of describing resonant and non-resonant many-body states on equal footing.
To make reliable predictions, quality input is needed that allows for the full uncertainty quantification of theoretical results. In this study, we carry out the optimization of an effective GSM (one-body and two-body) interaction in the $psdf$ shell model space. The resulting interaction is expected to describe nuclei with $5 \leqslant A \leqslant 12$ at the $p-sd$-shell interface.
The optimized one-body potential reproduces nucleon-$^4$He scattering phase shifts up to an excitation energy of 20 MeV. The two-body interaction built on top of the optimized one-body field is adjusted to the bound and unbound ground-state binding energies and selected excited states of the Helium, Lithium, and Beryllium isotopes up to $A=9$. A very good agreement with experiment was obtained for binding energies. First applications of the optimized interaction include predictions for two-nucleon correlation densities and excitation spectra of light nuclei with quantified uncertainties.
The new interaction will enable comprehensive and fully quantified studies of structure and reactions aspects of nuclei from the $psd$ region of the nuclear chart.

${\bf Background:}$ Weakly bound and unbound nuclear states appearing around particle thresholds are prototypical open quantum systems. Theories of such states must take into account configuration mixing effects in the presence of strong coupling to the particle continuum space.
${\bf Purpose:}$ To describe structure and decays of three-body systems, we developed a Gamow coupled-channel (GCC) approach in Jacobi coordinates by employing the complex-momentum formalism. We benchmarked the new framework against the complex-energy Gamow Shell Model (GSM).
${\bf Methods:}$ The GCC formalism is expressed in Jacobi coordinates, so that the center-of-mass motion is automatically eliminated. To solve the coupled-channel equations, we use hyperspherical harmonics to describe the angular wave functions while the radial wave functions are expanded in the Berggren ensemble, which includes bound, scattering and Gamow states.
${\bf Results:}$ We show that the GCC method is both accurate and robust. Its results for energies, decay widths, and nucleon-nucleon angular correlations are in good agreement with the GSM results.
${\bf Conclusions:}$ We have demonstrated that a three-body GSM formalism explicitly constructed in cluster-orbital shell model coordinates provides similar results to a GCC framework expressed in Jacobi coordinates, provided that a large configuration space is employed. Our calculations for $A=6$ systems and $^{26}$O show that nucleon-nucleon angular correlations are sensitive to the valence-neutron interaction. The new GCC technique has many attractive features when applied to bound and unbound states of three-body systems: it is precise, efficient, and can be extended by introducing a microscopic model of the core.

The binding-energy pattern along the neutron-rich oxygen chain, governed by an interplay between shell effects and many-body correlations impacted by strong couplings to one- and two-neutron continuum, make these isotopes a unique testing ground for nuclear models. In this work, we investigate ground states and low-lying excited states of $^{23-28}$O using the complex-energy Gamow Shell Model and Density Matrix Renormalization Group method with a finite-range two-body interaction optimized to the bound states and resonances of $^{23-26}$O, assuming a core of $^{22}$O. Our results suggest that the ground-state of $^{28}$O has a threshold character, i.e., is very weakly bound or slightly unbound. We also predict narrow excited resonances in $^{25}$O and $^{27}$O. The inclusion of the large continuum space significantly impacts predicted binding energies of $^{26-28}$O. This implies that the careful treatment of neutron continuum is necessary prior to assessing the spectroscopic quality of effective interactions in this region.

The search for a resonant four-neutron system has been revived thanks to the recent experimental hints reported in Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{116}, 052501 (2016). The existence of such a system would deeply impact our understanding of nuclear matter and requires a critical investigation. In this work, we study the existence of a four-neutron resonance in the quasi-stationary formalism using \textit{ab initio} techniques with various two-body chiral interactions. We employ the No-Core Gamow Shell Model and the Density Matrix Renormalization Group method, both supplemented by the use of natural orbitals and a new identification technique for broad resonances. We demonstrate that while the energy of the four-neutron system may be compatible with the experimental value, its width must be larger than the reported upper limit, supporting the interpretation of the experimental observation as a reaction process too short to form a nucleus.

The pairing Hamiltonian is based on the rational Gaudin (RG) model which is formulated in the Berggren ensemble. We show that solutions of the generalized Richardson equations are exact in the two limiting situations: (i) in the pole approximation and (ii) in the s.p. continuum. If the s.p. spectrum contains both discrete and continuum parts, then the generalized Richardson equations provide accurate solutions for the Gamow Shell Model.

Background: Deformed neutron-rich magnesium isotopes constitute a fascinating territory where the interplay between collective rotation and single-particle motion is strongly affected by the neutron continuum. The unbound $fp$-shell nucleus $ ^{39}\text{Mg} $ is an ideal candidate to study this interplay. Purpose: In this work, we predict the properties of low-lying resonant states of $ ^{39}\text{Mg} $, using a suite of realistic theoretical approaches rooted in the open quantum system framework. Method: To describe the spectrum and decay modes of $ ^{39}\text{Mg} $ we use the conventional Shell Model, Gamow Shell Model, Resonating Group Method, Density Matrix Renormalization Group method, and the non-adiabatic Particle-Plus-Rotor model formulated in the Berggren basis. Results: The unbound ground state of $ ^{39}\text{Mg} $ is predicted to be either a $ J^π = {7/2}^- $ state or a $ {3/2}^- $ state. A narrow $ J^π = {7/2}^- $ ground-state candidate exhibits a resonant structure reminiscent of that of its one-neutron halo neighbor $ ^{37}\text{Mg} $, which is dominated by the $ f_{7/2} $ partial wave at short distances and a $ p_{3/2} $ component at large distances. A $ J^π={3/2}^- $ ground-state candidate is favored by the large deformation of the system. It can be associated with the $ {1/2}^- [321] $ Nilsson orbital dominated by the $\ell=1$ wave; hence its predicted width is large. The excited $J^π = {1/2}^-$ and $5/2^-$ states are expected to be broad resonances, while the $ J^π = {9/2}^- $ and $ {11/2}^- $ members of the ground-state rotational band are predicted to have very small neutron decay widths. Conclusion: We demonstrate that the subtle interplay between deformation, shell structure, and continuum coupling can result in a variety of excitations in an unbound nucleus just outside the neutron drip line.

We solve for properties of $^6$Li in the ab initio No-Core Full Configuration approach and we separately solve for its ground state and $J^π=2_{2}^{+}$ resonance with the Gamow Shell Model in the Berggren basis. We employ both the JISP16 and chiral NNLO$_{opt}$ realistic nucleon-nucleon interactions and investigate the ground state energy, excitation energies, point proton root-mean-square radius and a suite of electroweak observables. We also extend and test methods to extrapolate the ground state energy, point proton root-mean-square radius, and electric quadrupole moment. We attain improved estimates of these observables in the No-Core Full Configuration approach by using basis spaces up through N$_{max}$=18 that enable more definitive comparisons with experiment. Using the Density Matrix Renormalization Group approach with the JISP16 interaction, we find that we can significantly improve the convergence of the Gamow Shell Model treatment of the $^6$Li ground state and $J^π=2_{2}^{+}$ resonance by adopting a natural orbital single-particle basis.

According to standard stellar evolution, lithium abundance is believed to be a useful indicator of the stellar age. However, many evolved stars like red giants show huge fluctuations around expected theoretical abundances that are not yet fully understood. The better knowledge of nuclear reactions that contribute to the creation and destruction of lithium can help to solve this puzzle. In this work we apply the Gamow shell model (GSM) formulated in the coupled-channel representation (GSM-CC) to investigate the mirror radiative capture reactions $^6$Li$(p,γ)$$^7$Be and $^6$Li$(n,γ)$$^7$Li. The cross-sections are calculated using a translationally invariant Hamiltonian with the finite-range interaction which is adjusted to reproduce spectra, binding energies and one-nucleon separation energies in $^{6-7}$Li, $^7$Be. All relevant $E1$, $M1$, and $E2$ transitions from the initial continuum states to the final bound states $J={3/2}_1^-$ and $J={1/2}^-$ of $^7$Li and $^7$Be are included. We demonstrate that the $s$-wave radiative capture of proton (neutron) to the first excited state $J^π=1/2_1^+$ of $^7$Be ($^7$Li) is crucial and increases the total astrophysical $S$-factor by about 40 \%.

${\textbf{Background:}}$ Atomic nuclei often exhibit collective rotational-like behavior in highly excited states, well above the particle emission threshold. What determines the existence of collective motion in the continuum region, is not fully understood.
${\textbf{Purpose:}}$ In this work, by studying the collective rotation of the positive-parity deformed configurations of the one-neutron halo nucleus $^{11}$Be, we assess different mechanisms that stabilize collective behavior beyond the limits of particle stability.
${\textbf{Method:}}$ To solve a particle-plus-core problem, we employ a non-adiabatic coupled-channel formalism and the Berggren single-particle ensemble, which explicitly contains bound states, narrow resonances, and the scattering continuum. We study the valence-neutron density in the intrinsic rotor frame to assess the validity of the adiabatic approach as the excitation energy increases.
${\textbf{Results:}}$ We demonstrate that collective rotation of the ground band of $^{11}$Be is stabilized by (i) the fact that the $\ell=0$ one-neutron decay channel is closed, and (ii) the angular momentum alignment, which increases the parentage of high-$\ell$ components at high spins; both effects act in concert to decrease decay widths of ground-state band members. This is not the case for higher-lying states of $^{11}$Be, where the $\ell=0$ neutron-decay channel is open and often dominates.
${\textbf{Conclusion:}}$ We demonstrate that long-lived collective states can exist at high excitation energy in weakly bound neutron drip-line nuclei such as $^{11}$Be.

Bound and resonance states of the dipole-bound anion of hydrogen cyanide HCN$^-$ are studied using a non-adiabatic pseudopotential method and the Berggren expansion technique involving bound states, decaying resonant states, and non-resonant scattering continuum. We devise an algorithm to identify the resonant states in the complex energy plane. To characterize spatial distributions of electronic wave functions, we introduce the body-fixed density and use it to assign families of resonant states into collective rotational bands. We find that the non-adiabatic coupling of electronic motion to molecular rotation results in a transition from the strong-coupling to weak-coupling regime. In the strong coupling limit, the electron moving in a subthreshold, spatially extended halo state follows the rotational motion of the molecule. Above the ionization threshold, electron's motion in a resonance state becomes largely decoupled from molecular rotation. Widths of resonance-band members depend primarily on the electron orbital angular momentum.

The physics of open quantum systems is an interdisciplinary area of research. The nuclear "openness" manifests itself through the presence of the many-body continuum representing various decay, scattering, and reaction channels. As the radioactive nuclear beam experimentation extends the known nuclear landscape towards the particle drip lines, the coupling to the continuum space becomes exceedingly more important. Of particular interest are weakly bound and unbound nuclear states appearing around particle thresholds. Theories of such nuclei must take into account their open quantum nature. To describe open quantum systems, we introduce a Complex Scaling (CS) approach in the Slater basis. We benchmark it with the complex-energy Gamow Shell Model (GSM) by studying energies and wave functions of the bound and unbound states of the two-neutron halo nucleus 6He viewed as an $α$+ n + n cluster system. In the CS approach, we use the Slater basis, which exhibits the correct asymptotic behavior at large distances. To extract particle densities from the back-rotated CS solutions, we apply the Tikhonov regularization procedure, which minimizes the ultraviolet numerical noise. While standard applications of the inverse complex transformation to the complex-rotated solution provide unstable results, the stabilization method fully reproduces the GSM benchmark. We also propose a method to determine the smoothing parameter of the Tikhonov regularization. The combined suite of CS-Slater and GSM techniques has many attractive features when applied to nuclear problems involving weakly-bound and unbound states. While both methods can describe energies, total widths, and wave functions of nuclear states, the CS-Slater method, if it can be applied, can provide an additional information about partial energy widths associated with individual thresholds.
