For the first time, we approach in this work the problem of the renormalization of the Gamow-Teller decay operator for nuclear shell-model calculations by way of many-body perturbation theory, starting from a nuclear Hamiltonian and electroweak currents derived consistently by way of the chiral perturbation theory. These are the inputs we need to construct microscopically the effective shell-model Hamiltonians and decay operators. The goal is to assess the role of both electroweak currents and many-body correlations as the origins of the well-known problem of the quenching of the axial coupling constant gA. To this end, the calculation of observables related to the Gamow-Teller transitions has been performed for several nuclear systems outside the 40Ca and 56Ni closed cores and compared with the available data.

We survey the impact of nuclear three-body forces on structure properties of nuclei within the shell model.
It has long been acknowledged, since the seminal works of Zuker and coworkers, that three-body forces play a fundamental role in making the monopole component of shell-model Hamiltonians, derived from realistic nucleon-nucleon potentials, able to reproduce the observed evolution of the shell structure. In the vast majority of calculations, however, their effects have been taken into account by shell-model practitioners by introducing ad hoc modifications of the monopole matrix elements. During last twenty years, a new theoretical approach, framed within the chiral perturbation theory, has progressed in develo** nuclear potentials, where two- and many-body components are naturally and consistently built in. This new class of nuclear forces allows to carry out nuclear structure studies that are improving our ability to understand nuclear phenomena in a microscopic approach. We provide in this work an update on the status of the nuclear shell model based on realistic Hamiltonians that are derived from two- and three-nucleon chiral potentials, focusing on the role of the three-body component to provide the observed shell evolution and closure properties, as well as the location of driplines. To this end, we present the results of shell-model calculations and their comparison with recent experimental measurements, which enlighten the relevance of the inclusion of three-nucleon forces to master our knowledge of the physics of atomic nuclei.

Starting from a chiral interaction with two-nucleon force (2NF) at N$^3$LO and three-nucleon force (3NF) at N$^2$LO, a complex-momentum ${\it psd}$-shell Hamiltonian was constructed by employing the many-body perturbation theory in the Gamow Hartree-Fock basis which includes bound, resonant and continuum states self-consistently. Such an elaborated {\it ab initio} Gamow shell model with both continuum coupling and 3NF included can properly treat the many-body correlations of weakly bound and unbound nuclei. The mirror partners of $^{16}$F and $^{16}$N exhibit different level orders in their excitation spectra, which can be well explained by the inclusion of 3NF in the calculation. The isospin asymmetry between the mirror partners $^{16}$Ne and $^{16}$C was studied in detail by insight into their configuration structures. The interplay between 3NF and the continuum coupling is discussed in the weakly bound and unbound nuclear states.

We have developed an {\it ab initio} deformed in-medium similarity renormalization group (IMSRG) for open-shell nuclei. This is a single-reference IMSRG in deformed Hartree-Fock (HF) basis. Deformed wave functions are more efficient in describing deformed nuclei. The broken spherical symmetry needs to be restored by angular momentum projection, which is computational expensive. The angular momentum mainly capture the static correlations and can be estimated by the projection of the HF state. In this work, we do deformed IMSRG calculation and add the correlation energy from projected HF as a leading order approximation. As the test ground, we have calculated the deformed $^{8,10}\rm Be$ isotopes with the optimized chiral interaction NNLO$_{\rm opt}$. The results are benchmarked with the no-core shell model and valence space IMSRG calculations. Then we systematically investigated the ground-state energies and charge radii of even-even isotopes from light beryllium to medium-mass magnesium. The calculated energies are extrapolated to infinite basis space by an exponential form, and compared with the extrapolated valence-space IMSRG results and experimental data available.

With both three-nucleon force and continuum coupling included, we have developed a self-consistent {\it ab initio} Gamow shell model within the Gamow Hartree-Fock (GHF) basis obtained by the realistic interaction itself. With the chiral two-nucleon N$^3$LO and three-nucleon N$^2$LO interactions, the Gamow shell model has been applied to the mirror systems of $Z=8$ neutron-rich isotopes and $N=8$ proton-rich isotones, giving good agreements with data in binding energies, dripline positions and excitation spectra. The GHF calculated that the $0d_{3/2}$, $1s_{1/2}$ and $1p_{3/2}$ orbitals are resonances. The resonance states and their interplay with nonresonant continua play a crucial role in the descriptions of nuclei around driplines. Excitation spectra and Thomas-Ehrman shifts observed can be better described when both three-nucleon force and continuum coupling are considered in calculations. The three-nucleon force and continuum coupling produce a combined effect on the Thomas-Ehrman shift, e.g., for the ${1/2}^+$ resonance level of $^{19}$Na. The calculations help the understandings of related nuclear astrophysical processes.

Background: The half-life of the famous $^{14}$C $β$ decay is anomalously long, with different mechanisms: the tensor force, cross-shell mixing, and three-body forces, proposed to explain the cancellations that lead to a small transition matrix element. Purpose: We revisit and analyze the role of the tensor force for the $β$ decay of $^{14}$C as well as of neighboring isotopes. Methods: We add a tensor force to the Gogny interaction, and derive an effective Hamiltonian for shell-model calculations. The calculations were carried out in a $p$-$sd$ model space to investigate cross-shell effects. Furthermore, we decompose the wave functions according to the total orbital angular momentum $L$ in order to analyze the effects of the tensor force and cross-shell mixing.
Results: The inclusion of the tensor force significantly improves the shell-model calculations of the $β$-decay properties of carbon isotopes. In particular, the anomalously slow $β$ decay of $^{14}$C can be explained by the isospin $T=0$ part of the tensor force, which changes the components of $^{14}$N with the orbital angular momentum $L=0,1$, and results in a dramatic suppression of the Gamow-Teller transition strength. At the same time, the description of other nearby $β$ decays are improved.
Conclusions: Decomposition of wave function into $L$ components illuminates how the tensor force modifies nuclear wave functions, in particular suppression of $β$-decay matrix elements. Cross-shell mixing also has a visible impact on the $β$-decay strength. Inclusion of the tensor force does not seem to significantly change, however, binding energies of the nuclei within the phenomenological interaction.

More precisely, we take advantage of the normal-ordering approach to include the 3NF and the Berggren representation to treat bound, resonant and continuum states on equal footing in a complex-momentum plane. In our framework, 3NF is essential to reproduce the Borromean structure of 17Ne, while the continuum is more crucial for the halo property of the nucleus. The two-proton halo structure is demonstrated by calculating the valence proton density and correlation density. The astrophysically interesting $3/2^-$ excited state has its energy above the threshold of the proton emission, and therefore the two-proton decay should be expected from the state.

Three-nucleon force and continuum play important roles in reproducing the properties of atomic nuclei around driplines. Therefore it is valuable to build up a theoretical framework where both effects can be taken into account to solve the nuclear Schrödinger equation. To this end, in this letter, we have expressed the chiral three-nucleon force within the continuum Berggren representation, so that bound, resonant and continuum states can be treated on an equal footing in the complex-momentum space. To reduce the model dimension and computational cost, the three-nucleon force is truncated at the normal-ordered two-body level and limited in the $sd$-shell model space, with the residual three-body term being neglected. We choose neutron-rich oxygen isotopes as the test ground because they have been well studied experimentally, with the neutron dripline determined. The calculations have been carried out within the Gamow shell model. The quality of our results in reproducing the properties of oxygen isotopes around the neutron dripline shows the relevance of the interplay between three-nucleon force and the coupling to continuum states. We also analyze the role played by the chiral three-nucleon force, by dissecting the contributions of the $2π$ exchange, $1π$ exchange and contact terms.

Then we construct the effective single-particle energies and residual interaction needed to diagonalize the shell-model Hamiltonian. The calculated two-neutron separation energies agree nicely with experiment until 56Ca, which is the heaviest isotope whose mass has been measured, and do not show any sign of two-neutron emission until 70Ca. We discuss the role of the choice of the model space in determining the neutron drip line, and also the dependence of the results on the parameters of the shell-model Hamiltonian.

We probe nuclear multipole resonances in the framework of the random-phase approximation by using the interaction obtained from the chiral effective field theory. The three-nucleon force is included in a form of the in-medium two-nucleon interaction which was derived from the chiral three-nucleon force. The isoscalar monopole, isoscalar dipole, isovector dipole and isoscalar quadrupole resonances of the closed-shell $^{56,68,78}$Ni have been investigated. The calculations reasonably reproduce the experimental multipole resonances of $^{56,68}$Ni, and well describe the pygmy dipole resonance and dipole polarizability measured in $^{68}$Ni. The multipole resonances of $^{78}$Ni, including pygmy dipole resonance and dipole polarizability, are predicted. The detailed effects of the tensor force and three-body force are analyzed by dissecting the chiral interaction. We find that in general the tensor force effect on electric giant resonances is not as significant as the effect from the three-body force, although the tensor force provides more than half of the binding energy. The effect from three-body force is strong in light nuclei. Particularly, three-body force is crucial for the formation of the pygmy resonance in calculations.

Gamow shell model (GSM) is usually performed within the Woods-Saxon (WS) basis in which the WS parameters need to be determined by fitting experimental single-particle energies including their resonance widths. In the multi-shell case, such a fit is difficult due to the lack of experimental data of cross-shell single-particle energies and widths. In this paper, we develop an {\it ab-initio} GSM by introducing the Gamow Hartree-Fock (GHF) basis that is obtained using the same interaction as the one used in the construction of the shell-model Hamiltonian. GSM makes use of the complex-momentum Berggren representation, then including resonance and continuum components. Hence, GSM gives a good description of weakly bound and unbound nuclei. Starting from chiral effective field theory and employing many-body perturbation theory (MBPT) (called nondegenerate $\hat Q$-box folded-diagram renormalization) in the GHF basis, a multi-shell Hamiltonian ({\it sd-pf} shells in this work) can be constructed. The single-particle energies and their resonance widths can also been obtained using MBPT. We investigated $^{23-28}$O and $^{23-31}$F isotopes, for which multi-shell calculations are necessary. Calculations show that continuum effects and the inclusion of the {\it pf} shell are important elements to understand the structure of nuclei close to and beyond driplines.

We present a study of the role played by realistic three-body forces in providing a reliable monopole component of the effective shell-model Hamiltonian. To this end, starting from a nuclear potential built up within the chiral perturbation theory, we derive effective shell-model Hamiltonians with and without the contribution of the three-body potential and compare the results of shell-model calculations with a set of observables that evidence shell-evolution properties. The testing ground of our investigation are nuclei belonging to fp shell, since the shell evolution towards shell closures in 48Ca and 56Ni provides a paradigm for shell-model Hamiltonians. Our analysis shows that only by including contributions of the three-body force the monopole component of the effective shell-model Hamiltonian is then able to reproduce the experimental shell evolution towards and beyond the closure at N=28.

In this paper we present an evolution of our derivation of the shell-model effective Hamiltonian, namely introducing effects of three-body contributions. More precisely, we consider a three-body potential at next-to-next-to-leading order in chiral perturbation theory, and the induced three-body forces that arise from many-body correlations among valence nucleons. The first one is included, in the derivation of the effective Hamiltonian for one- and two-valence nucleon-systems, at first order in the many-body perturbation theory. Namely, we include only the three-body interaction between one or two valence nucleons and those belonging to the core. For nuclei with more than two valence particles, both induced - turned on by the two-body potential - and genuine three-body forces come into play. Since it is difficult to perform shell-model calculations with three-body forces, these contributions are estimated for the ground-state energy only. In order to establish the reliability of our approximations, we focus attention on nuclei belonging to the p shell, aiming to benchmark our calculations against those performed with the ab initio no-core shell-model. The obtained results are satisfactory, and pave the way to the application of our approach to nuclear systems with heavier masses.

We study nuclear multipole resonances in the framework of the random phase approximation using the chiral potential NNLO$_{\text{sat}}$. This potential includes two- and three-body terms that has been simultaneously optimized to low-energy nucleon-nucleon scattering data and selected nuclear structure data. Our main foci have been the isoscalar monopole, isovector dipole, and isoscalar quadrupole resonances of the closed-shell nuclei, $^4$He, $^{16,22,24}$O, and $^{40,48}$Ca. These resonance modes have been widely observed in experiment. In addition, we use a renormalized chiral potential $V_{\text{low-}k}$, based on the N$^3$LO two-body potential by Entem and Machleidt [Phys. Rev. \textbf{C68}, 041001 (2011)]. This introduces a dependency on the cutoff parameter used in the normalization procedure as reported in previous works by other groups. While NNLO$_{\text{sat}}$ can reasonably reproduce observed multipole resonances, it is not possible to find a single cutoff parameter for the $V_{\text{low-}k}$ potential that simultaneously describe the different types of resonance modes. The sensitivity to the cutoff parameter can be explained by missing induced three-body forces in the calculations. Our results for neutron-rich $^{22,24}$O show a mixing nature of isoscalar and isovector resonances in the dipole channel at low energies. We predict that $^{22}$O and $^{24}$O have low-energy isoscalar quadrupole resonances at energies lower than 5 MeV.
