In this work, under the hypothesis that quark matter may not be strange [Phys. Rev. Lett. 120, 222001 (2018)], we adopt a modification of the coupling constant of the four-quark scalar interaction $G\rightarrow G_1+G_2\langle\barψψ\rangle$ in the 2-flavor Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model to study nonstrange hybrid stars. According to lattice QCD simulation results of the critical temperature at zero chemical potential, $G_1$ and $G_2$ are constrained as $G_1\in(1.935, 1.972)$ GeV$^{-2}$, and $G_2\in(-1.582, -0.743)$ GeV$^{-5}$, respectively. To obtain hybrid equation of states, the Maxwell construction is used to describe the first-order confinement-deconfinement phase transition in hybrid stars. With recent measurements on neutron star mass, radius, and tidal deformability, the hybrid equation of states are constrained. The result suggests that pure nonstrange quark matter cores can exist in hybrid stars, possessing 0.014-0.026 solar mass with the bag constant $B^{1/4}$ in a range of 148-161 MeV. It is argued that the binary neutron stars in GW170817 should be hadron stars.

We propose two functions to distinguish fission-like events from quasi-elastic (QE) scattering and deep inelastic collisions (DIC), for a better analysis of the measured mass-total kinetic energy distributions of binary fragments formed in fusion-fission reactions. We note that the ratio of capture to DIC events evidently decreases with the decreasing of the depth of the capture pocket predicted from the Skyrme energy density functional, with which the capture pocket could be extracted from the measured mass-energy distributions. Together with the improved quantum molecular dynamics simulations, in which the typical contact time of the reaction partners is smaller than 200 fm/c for QE and is larger than 600 fm/c for fission-like events, we find that the ratio of capture to touching cross section systematically increases with the pocket depth.

Einstein field equations are notoriously challenging to solve due to their complex mathematical form, with few analytical solutions available in the absence of highly symmetric systems or ideal matter distribution. However, accurate solutions are crucial, particularly in systems with strong gravitational field such as black holes or neutron stars. In this work, we use neural networks and auto differentiation to solve the Einstein field equations numerically inspired by the idea of physics-informed neural networks (PINNs). By utilizing these techniques, we successfully obtain the Schwarzschild metric and the charged Schwarzschild metric given the energy-momentum tensor of matter. This innovative method could open up a different way for solving space-time coupled Einstein field equations and become an integral part of numerical relativity.

Over the past two decades high energy-resolution inelastic proton scattering studies were used to gain an understanding of the origin of fine structure observed in the isoscalar giant quadrupole resonance (ISGQR) and the isovector giant dipole resonance (IVGDR). Recently, the isoscalar giant monopole resonance (ISGMR) in $^{58}$Ni, $^{90}$Zr, $^{120}$Sn and $^{208}$Pb was studied at the iThemba Laboratory for Accelerator Based Sciences (iThemba LABS) by means of inelastic $α$-particle scattering at very forward scattering angles (including $0\circ$). The good energy resolution of the measurement revealed significant fine structure of the ISGMR.~To extract scales by means of wavelet analysis characterizing the observed fine structure of the ISGMR in order to investigate the role of different mechanisms contributing to its decay width. Characteristic energy scales are extracted from the fine structure using continuous wavelet transforms. The experimental energy scales are compared to different theoretical approaches performed in the framework of quasiparticle random phase approximation (QRPA) and beyond-QRPA including complex configurations using both non-relativistic and relativistic density functional theory. All models highlight the role of Landau fragmentation for the dam** of the ISGMR especially in the medium-mass region. Models which include the coupling between one particle-one hole (1p-1h) and two particle-two hole (2p-2h) configurations modify the strength distributions and wavelet scales indicating the importance of the spreading width. The effect becomes more pronounced with increasing mass number. Wavelet scales remain a sensitive measure of the interplay between Landau fragmentation and the spreading width in the description of the fine structure of giant resonances.

Recent measurements indicate that the previously established upper limit for the $γ$-decay branch of the $3_{1}^{-}$ resonance in $^{12}\textrm{C}$ at $E_{x} = 9.641(5)$ MeV may be incorrect. As a result, the $3_{1}^{-}$ resonance has been suggested as a significant resonance for mediating the triple-$α$ reaction at high temperatures above 2 GK. Accurate estimations of the $3_{1}^{-}$ contribution to the triple-$α$ reaction rate require accurate knowledge of not only the radiative width, but also the total width. In anticipation of future measurements to more accurately determine the $γ$-decay branch of the $3_{1}^{-}$ resonance, the objective of this work is to accurately determine the total width of the $3_{1}^{-}$ resonance. An evaluation was performed on all previous results considered in the current ENSDF average of 46(3) keV for the physical total width (FWHM) of the $3_{1}^{-}$ resonance in $^{12}\textrm{C}$. Significant unaccounted-for uncertainties and a misstated result were discovered in these previous results, leading to an invalid ENSDF average. In this work, the new global \textbf{R}-matrix analysis performed on direct-reaction data yields a formal total width of $Γ(E_{r}) = 46(2)$ keV and an observed total width of $Γ_{\textrm{obs}}(E_{r}) = 38(2)$ keV for the $3_{1}^{-}$ resonance. An observed total width of $Γ_{\textrm{obs}}(E_{r}) = 38(2)$ keV is recommended for the $3_{1}^{-}$ resonance in $\mathrm{^{12}C}$. This observed total width should be employed for future evaluations of the observed total radiative width for the $3_{1}^{-}$ resonance and its contribution to the high-temperature triple-$α$ reaction rate.

No significant $H$-dibaryon signal is observed in the $Ξ^-p$ final state. This is the first study of hyperon-nucleon interactions in electron-positron collisions and opens up a new direction for such research.

The challenge of isotopic identification over a wide angular distribution has limited the measurement of neutron-rich nuclei produced via the multinucleon transfer (MNT) process. To investigate the optimal detection angles for the N=126 isotones, we propose a method to construct the reasonable scattering angles of the MNT products in the dinuclear system (DNS-sysu) model. The reactions $^{136,144}$Xe + $^{208}$Pb are investigated. The calculated results are in rather good agreement with the available experimental data in the reaction $^{136}$Xe + $^{208}$Pb. The entrance channel effects on the scattering angle are investigated. It is found that the scattering angular distribution strongly depends on the isospin and the impact parameter of the collision system. The optimal angle ranges for detecting $N=126$ neutron-rich nuclides $^{204}$Pt, $^{203}$Ir, $^{202}$Os, and $^{201}$Re in the $^{136}$Xe + $^{208}$Pb reaction at the incident energy $E_{c.m.} = 526MeV$ are predicted. Our results suggest that the angle range $45^{\circ} \leqslant θ_{\mathrm{lab}} \leqslant 50^{\circ}$ is most favorable for detecting unknown N=126 isotones. Given the current difficulties in separating and identifying experimental MNT fragments, the results of this work could provide significant contributions to future experiments.

In this paper, a version of the Polyakov-Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (PNJL) model based on nonextensive statistical mechanics is presented. This new statistics summarizes all possible factors that violate the assumptions of the Boltzmann-Gibbs (BG) statistics to a dimensionless nonextensivity parameter $q$, and when $q$ tends to 1, it returns to the BG case. Within the nonextensive PNJL model, we found that as $q$ increases, the location of the critical end point (CEP) exhibits non-monotonic behavior. That is, for $q<1.15$, CEP moves in the direction of lower temperature and larger quark chemical potential. But for $q>1.15$, CEP turns to move in the direction of lower temperature and lower quark chemical potential. In addition, we studied the moments of the net-baryon number distribution, that is, the variance ($σ^{2}$), skewness (S), and kurtosis ($κ$). Our results are generally consistent with the latest experimental data, especially for $\sqrt{S_{NN}}>19.6\ \mathrm{GeV}$, when $q$ is set to $1.07$.

Photo-nuclear reactions of light nuclei below a mass of $A=60$ are studied experimentally and theoretically by the PANDORA (Photo-Absorption of Nuclei and Decay Observation for Reactions in Astrophysics) project. Two experimental methods, virtual-photon excitation by proton scattering and real-photo absorption by a high-brilliance gamma-ray beam produced by laser Compton scattering, will be applied to measure the photo-absorption cross sections and the decay branching ratio of each decay channel as a function of the photon energy. Several nuclear models, e.g. anti-symmetrized molecular dynamics, mean-field type models, a large-scale shell model, and ab initio models, will be employed to predict the photo-nuclear reactions. The uncertainty in the model predictions will be evaluated from the discrepancies between the model predictions and the experimental data. The data and the predictions will be implemented in a general reaction calculation code TALYS . The results will be applied to the simulation of the photo-disintegration process of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays in inter-galactic propagation.

We review recent studies about anisotropic flows ($v_1, v_2, v_3$) of charmonium in the quark-gluon plasma produced in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Collective flows of the bulk medium are developed due to the anisotropic pressure gradient of the medium. Strongly coupled with the bulk medium, charm quarks carry collective flows from the expanding medium, which will be inherited by the regenerated charmonium via the coalescence process. In event-by-event collisions where nucleon positions fluctuate from the smooth distribution, there is triangularity in the medium initial energy density. Triangular flows of the bulk medium and heavy flavor particles can be developed due to the initial fluctuations. In the longitudinal direction, the rapidity-odd distribution of the initial energy density is induced by the rotation of the medium in non-central heavy-ion collisions. Charmonium suffers biased dissociation along positive and negative $x$-directions in forward (backward) rapidity. The directed flow of charmonium becomes non-zero. The directed, elliptic and triangular flows ($v_1, v_2, v_3$) of charmonium come from the anisotropic initial distributions of the medium energy density in the transverse and longitudinal directions.

We report a measurement of cumulants and correlation functions of event-by-event proton multiplicity distributions from fixed-target Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 3 GeV measured by the STAR experiment. Protons are identified within the rapidity ($y$) and transverse momentum ($p_{\rm T}$) region $-0.9 < y<0$ and $0.4 < p_{\rm T} <2.0 $ GeV/$c$ in the center-of-mass frame. A systematic analysis of the proton cumulants and correlation functions up to sixth-order as well as the corresponding ratios as a function of the collision centrality, $p_{\rm T}$, and $y$ are presented. The effect of pileup and initial volume fluctuations on these observables and the respective corrections are discussed in detail. The results are compared to calculations from the hadronic transport UrQMD model as well as a hydrodynamic model. In the most central 5\% collisions, the value of proton cumulant ratio $C_4/C_2$ is negative, drastically different from the values observed in Au+Au collisions at higher energies. Compared to model calculations including Lattice QCD, a hadronic transport model, and a hydrodynamic model, the strong suppression in the ratio of $C_4/C_2$ at 3 GeV Au+Au collisions indicates an energy regime dominated by hadronic interactions.

The higher-order cumulants of net-proton number, net-charge, and net-strangeness multiplicity distributions are widely studied to search for the quantum-chromodynamics critical point and extract the chemical freeze-out parameters in heavy-ion collisions. In this context, the event-by-event fluctuations of the net-strangeness multiplicity distributions play important roles in extracting the chemical freeze-out parameter in the strangeness sector. Due to having difficulties in detecting all strange hadrons event by event, the kaon ($K$) and lambda ($Λ$) particles serve as a proxy for the strangeness-related observables in heavy-ion collisions. We have studied the net-$K$, net-$Λ$, and net-($K$ + $Λ$) multiplicity distributions and calculated their different order of cumulants using the ultrarelativistic quantum molecular dynamics model and hadron resonance gas calculation. To adequately account for the net-strangeness cumulants, it has been found that the inclusion of resonance decay contributions in $K$ and $Λ$ is necessary.

We report the triton ($t$) production in mid-rapidity ($|y| <$ 0.5) Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}$= 7.7--200 GeV measured by the STAR experiment from the first phase of the beam energy scan at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The nuclear compound yield ratio ($\mathrm{N}_t \times \mathrm{N}_p/\mathrm{N}_d^2$), which is predicted to be sensitive to the fluctuation of local neutron density, is observed to decrease monotonically with increasing charged-particle multiplicity ($dN_{ch}/dη$) and follows a scaling behavior. The $dN_{ch}/dη$ dependence of the yield ratio is compared to calculations from coalescence and thermal models. Enhancements in the yield ratios relative to the coalescence baseline are observed in the 0\%-10\% most central collisions at 19.6 and 27 GeV, with a significance of 2.3$σ$ and 3.4$σ$, respectively, giving a combined significance of 4.1$σ$. The enhancements are not observed in peripheral collisions or model calculations without critical fluctuation, and decreases with a smaller $p_{T}$ acceptance. The physics implications of these results on the QCD phase structure and the production mechanism of light nuclei in heavy-ion collisions are discussed.

A decisive experimental test of the Chiral Magnetic Effect (CME) is considered one of the major scientific goals at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC) towards understanding the nontrivial topological fluctuations of the Quantum Chromodynamics vacuum. In heavy-ion collisions, the CME is expected to result in a charge separation phenomenon across the reaction plane, whose strength could be strongly energy dependent. The previous CME searches have been focused on top RHIC energy collisions. In this Letter, we present a low energy search for the CME in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{\rm{NN}}}}=27$ GeV. We measure elliptic flow scaled charge-dependent correlators relative to the event planes that are defined at both mid-rapidity $|η|<1.0$ and at forward rapidity $2.1 < |η|<5.1$. We compare the results based on the directed flow plane ($Ψ_1$) at forward rapidity and the elliptic flow plane ($Ψ_2$) at both central and forward rapidity. The CME scenario is expected to result in a larger correlation relative to $Ψ_1$ than to $Ψ_2$, while a flow driven background scenario would lead to a consistent result for both event planes. In 10-50\% centrality, results using three different event planes are found to be consistent within experimental uncertainties, suggesting a flow driven background scenario dominating the measurement. We obtain an upper limit on the deviation from a flow driven background scenario at the 95\% confidence level. This work opens up a possible road map towards future CME search with the high statistics data from the RHIC Beam Energy Scan Phase-II.

We report on measurements of sequential $Υ$ suppression in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_\mathrm{NN}}}$ = 200 GeV with the STAR detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) through both the dielectron and dimuon decay channels. In the 0-60% centrality class, the nuclear modification factors ($R_{\mathrm{AA}}$), which quantify the level of yield suppression in heavy-ion collisions compared to $p$+$p$ collisions, for $Υ$(1S) and $Υ$(2S) are $0.40 \pm 0.03~\textrm{(stat.)} \pm 0.03~\textrm{(sys.)} \pm 0.09~\textrm{(norm.)}$ and $0.26 \pm 0.08~\textrm{(stat.)} \pm 0.02~\textrm{(sys.)} \pm 0.06~\textrm{(norm.)}$, respectively, while the upper limit of the $Υ$(3S) $R_{\mathrm{AA}}$ is 0.17 at a 95% confidence level. This provides experimental evidence that the $Υ$(3S) is significantly more suppressed than the $Υ$(1S) at RHIC. The level of suppression for $Υ$(1S) is comparable to that observed at the much higher collision energy at the Large Hadron Collider. These results point to the creation of a medium at RHIC whose temperature is sufficiently high to strongly suppress excited $Υ$ states.

The dynamics of the charge equilibration (CE) and the effects on the production of the neutron-rich isotopes around $N = 126$ in multinucleon transfer reactions are still not well understood. In this Letter, we investigate the mechanism of the CE from different viewpoints by using the extended version of the dinuclear system model (DNS-sysu) and the improved quantum molecular dynamics (ImQMD) model. From the macroscopic and microscopic dynamical viewpoints, we find incomplete CE for the mass asymmetry reaction systems even in the very deep collisions, and the behavior of "inverse CE" that the tendency of the fragments is away from the $N/Z$ value of the compound system in the reaction $^{140}$Xe + $^{198}$Pt. Unlike the slow process presented in the ImQMD model, the behavior of fast equilibration with the characteristic time $\sim$ 0.52 zs is obtained based on the DNS-sysu model, which is consistent with the experimental data. By performing the systematic calculation, the correlation between the CE and the mass asymmetry of the reaction systems is clarified, which not only accounts for the observed intriguing phenomena of the CE but also provides essential information for producing the neutron-rich isotopes around $N = 126$.

A linearly polarized photon can be quantized from the Lorentz-boosted electromagnetic field of a nucleus traveling at ultra-relativistic speed. When two relativistic heavy nuclei pass one another at a distance of a few nuclear radii, the photon from one nucleus may interact through a virtual quark-antiquark pair with gluons from the other nucleus forming a short-lived vector meson (e.g. ${ρ^0}$). In this experiment, the polarization was utilized in diffractive photoproduction to observe a unique spin interference pattern in the angular distribution of ${ρ^0\rightarrowπ^+π^-}$ decays. The observed interference is a result of an overlap of two wave functions at a distance an order of magnitude larger than the ${ρ^0}$ travel distance within its lifetime. The strong-interaction nuclear radii were extracted from these diffractive interactions, and found to be $6.53\pm 0.06$ fm ($^{197} {\rm Au }$) and $7.29\pm 0.08$ fm ($^{238} {\rm U}$), larger than the nuclear charge radii. The observable is demonstrated to be sensitive to the nuclear geometry and quantum interference of non-identical particles.

Ab-initio calculations of nuclear masses, the binding energy and the $α$ decay half-lives are intractable for heavy nucleus, because of the curse of dimensionality in many body quantum simulations as proton number($\mathrm{N}$) and neutron number($\mathrm{Z}$) grow. We take advantage of the powerful non-linear transformation and feature representation ability of deep neural network(DNN) to predict the nuclear masses and $α$ decay half-lives. For nuclear binding energy prediction problem we achieve standard deviation $σ=0.263$ MeV on 10-fold cross validation on 2149 nuclei. Word-vectors which are high dimensional representation of nuclei from the hidden layers of mass-regression DNN help us to calculate $α$ decay half-lives. For this task, we get $σ=0.797$ on 100 times 10-fold cross validation on 350 nuclei on $log_{10}T_{1/2}$ and $σ=0.731 $ on 486 nuclei. We also find physical a priori such as shell structure, magic numbers and augmented inputs inspired by Finite Range Droplet Model are important for this small data regression task.

Knowledge of the low-lying monopole strength in $\mathrm{^{12}C}$ $-$ the Hoyle state in particular $-$ is crucial for our understanding of both the astrophysically important $3α$ reaction and of $α$-particle clustering. Multiple theoretical models have predicted a breathing mode of the Hoyle State at $E_{x} \approx 9$ MeV, corresponding to a radial in-phase oscillation of the underlying $α$ clusters. The $\mathrm{^{12}C}(α, α^{\prime})\mathrm{^{12}C}$ and $\mathrm{^{14}C}(p, t)\mathrm{^{12}C}$ reactions were employed to populate states in $^{12}$C in order to search for this predicted breathing mode. A self-consistent, simultaneous analysis of the inclusive spectra with R-matrix lineshapes, together with angular distributions of charged-particle decay, yielded clear evidence for excess monopole strength at $E_{x} \approx 9$ MeV which is highly collective. Reproduction of the experimentally observed inclusive yields using a fit, with consistent population ratios for the various broad states, required an additional source of monopole strength. The interpretation of this additional monopole resonance as the breathing-mode excitation of the Hoyle state would provide evidence supporting a $\mathcal{D}_{3h}$ symmetry for the Hoyle state itself. The excess monopole strength may complicate analysis of the properties of the Hoyle state, modifying the temperature dependence of the $3α$ rate at $T_{9} \gtrsim 2$ and ultimately, the predicted nucleosynthesis in explosive stars.

We investigate the transverse momentum ($p_{\rm T}$) spectra of identified hadrons in minimum-bias proton-proton (pp) collisions at a centre-of-mass energy ($\sqrt{s}$) of 0.9, 2.76, 5.02, 7 and 13 TeV in the framework of Tsallis-blast wave (TBW) model. It is found that the model describes well the particle spectra up to 10 GeV/c. The radial flow ($\langle β\rangle$) increases with the collision energy. The degrees of non-equilibrium ($q$) and the Tsallis temperature parameter ($T$) show a similar behaviour, but with a much weaker trend. With this dependence of the freeze-out parameters on the collision energy, we evaluate $\langle β\rangle$, $T$ and $q$ in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=$ 8 and 14 TeV and predict the particle spectra at these two energies. Moreover, in order to investigate the multiplicity dependence of the freeze-out parameters, the TBW model is extended to the spectra at different charged-particle multiplicity classes in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=$ 7 and 13 TeV. It is observed that at both energies the radial flow increases with the multiplicity while the degree of non-equilibrium shows an opposite behaviour, which is similar to that observed in proton-nucleus (pA) and nucleus-nucleus (AA) collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) energies. However, the Tsallis temperature parameter increases with the multiplicity, which is opposite to the trend in pA and AA collisions. At similar multiplicities, the radial flow in pp collisions is stronger than those in pA and AA collisions, indicating that the size of the colliding system has significant effects on the final state particle dynamics. Finally, we apply an additional flow correction to the Tsallis temperature parameter and find that the doppler-corrected temperature parameter almost scales with the multiplicity in a uniform way, despite the difference in the colliding system and collision energy.

We observe a clear suppression of the correlated yields of back-to-back $π^0$ pairs in $p+$Al and $p+$Au collisions compared to the $p$+$p$ data. The observed suppression of back-to-back pairs as a function of transverse momentum suggests nonlinear gluon dynamics arising at high parton densities. The larger suppression found in $p+$Au relative to $p+$Al collisions exhibits a dependence of the saturation scale, $Q_s^2$, on the mass number, $A$. A linear scaling of the suppression with $A^{1/3}$ is observed with a slope of $-0.09$ $\pm$ $0.01$.

Background: In highly deformed nuclei, there is a noticeable coupling of the Isoscalar Giant Monopole Resonance (ISGMR) and the $K = 0$ component of the Isoscalar Giant Quadrupole Resonance (ISGQR), which results in a double peak structure of the isoscalar monopole (IS0) strength (a narrow low-energy deformation-induced peak and a main broad ISGMR part). The energy of the narrow low-lying IS0 peak is sensitive to both the incompressibility modulus $K_\infty$ and the coupling between IS0 and isoscalar quadrupole (IS2) strength.
Objective: This study aims to investigate the two-peaked structure of the ISGMR in the prolate $^{24}$Mg and oblate $^{28}$Si nuclei and identify among a variety of energy density functionals based on Skyrme parameterisations the one which best describes the experimental data. This will allow for conclusions regarding the nuclear incompressibility. Because of the strong IS0/IS2 coupling, the deformation splitting of the ISGQR will also be analysed.
Methods: The ISGMR was excited in $^{24}$Mg and $^{28}$Si using $α$-particle inelastic scattering measurements acquired with an $E_α= 196$ MeV beam at scattering angles $θ_{\text{Lab}} = 0^\circ$ and $4^\circ$. The K$600$ magnetic spectrometer at iThemba LABS was used to detect and momentum analyse the inelastically scattered $α$ particles. An experimental energy resolution of $\approx 70$ keV (FWHM) was attained, revealing fine structure in the excitation-energy region of the ISGMR. The IS0 strength distributions in the nuclei studied were obtained with the Difference-of-Spectrum (DoS) technique. The theoretical comparison is based on the quasiparticle random-phase approximation (QRPA) with a representative set of Skyrme forces.

The calculation of dynamic response functions is expected to be an early application benefiting from rapidly develo** quantum hardware resources. The ability to calculate real-time quantities of strongly-correlated quantum systems is one of the most exciting applications that can easily reach beyond the capabilities of traditional classical hardware. Response functions of fermionic systems at moderate momenta and energies corresponding roughly to the Fermi energy of the system are a potential early application because the relevant operators are nearly local and the energies can be resolved in moderately short real time, reducing the spatial resolution and gate depth required.
This is particularly the case in quasielastic electron and neutrino scattering from nuclei, a topic of great interest in the nuclear and particle physics communities and directly related to experiments designed to probe neutrino properties. In this work we use current quantum hardware and error mitigation protocols to calculate response functions for a highly simplified nuclear model through calculations of a 2-point real time correlation function for a modified Fermi-Hubbard model in two dimensions with three distinguishable nucleons on four lattice sites.

Understanding gluon density distributions and how they are modified in nuclei are among the most important goals in nuclear physics. In recent years, diffractive vector meson production measured in ultra-peripheral collisions (UPCs) at heavy-ion colliders has provided a new tool for probing the gluon density. In this Letter, we report the first measurement of $J/ψ$ photoproduction off the deuteron in UPCs at the center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s_{_{\rm NN}}}=200~\rm GeV$ in d$+$Au collisions. The differential cross section as a function of momentum transfer $-t$ is measured. In addition, data with a neutron tagged in the deuteron-going Zero-Degree Calorimeter is investigated for the first time, which is found to be consistent with the expectation of incoherent diffractive scattering at low momentum transfer. Theoretical predictions based on the Color Glass Condensate saturation model and the gluon shadowing model are compared with the data quantitatively. A better agreement with the saturation model has been observed. With the current measurement, the results are found to be directly sensitive to the gluon density distribution of the deuteron and the deuteron breakup, which provides insights into the nuclear gluonic structure.

In order to better control the influence of signal and backgrounds, the STAR Collaboration performed a blind analysis of a large data sample of approximately 3.8 billion isobar collisions of $^{96}_{44}$Ru+$^{96}_{44}$Ru and $^{96}_{40}$Zr+$^{96}_{40}$Zr at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=200$ GeV. Prior to the blind analysis, the CME signatures are predefined as a significant excess of the CME-sensitive observables in Ru+Ru collisions over those in Zr+Zr collisions, owing to a larger magnetic field in the former. A precision down to 0.4% is achieved, as anticipated, in the relative magnitudes of the pertinent observables between the two isobar systems. Observed differences in the multiplicity and flow harmonics at the matching centrality indicate that the magnitude of the CME background is different between the two species. No CME signature that satisfies the predefined criteria has been observed in isobar collisions in this blind analysis.

We discuss how to connect the energy levels of two-particle systems trapped by a harmonic-oscillator force to scattering amplitudes, with nucleon-nucleon scattering phase shifts in uncoupled channels as the application. At the center of the proposed framework is the energy-dependent effective field theory that aims to expand observables in a neighborhood around each reference energy, often taken to be one of the energy levels. We also investigate how to disentangle the trap** force at short distances and the intrinsic interaction between the particles.

The chiral magnetic effect (CME) refers to charge separation along a strong magnetic field due to imbalanced chirality of quarks in local parity and charge-parity violating domains in quantum chromodynamics. The experimental measurement of the charge separation is made difficult by the presence of a major background from elliptic azimuthal anisotropy. This background and the CME signal have different sensitivities to the spectator and participant planes, and could thus be determined by measurements with respect to these planes. We report such measurements in Au+Au collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 200 GeV at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider. It is found that the charge separation, with the flow background removed, is consistent with zero in peripheral (large impact parameter) collisions. Some indication of finite CME signals is seen in mid-central (intermediate impact parameter) collisions. Significant residual background effects may, however, still be present.

The dependence on collision centrality and kinematic acceptance in ($p_{T}$, $y$) are analyzed. While for 27 and 54.4 GeV collisions the $C_{6}/C_{2}$ values are close to zero within uncertainties, it is observed that for 200 GeV collisions, the $C_{6}/C_{2}$ ratio becomes progressively negative from peripheral to central collisions. Transport model calculations without critical dynamics predict mostly positive values except for the most central collisions within uncertainties. These observations seem to favor a smooth crossover in the high energy nuclear collisions at top RHIC energy.

Rare information on photodisintegration reactions of nuclei with mass numbers $A \approx 160$ at astrophysical conditions impedes our understanding of the origin of $p$-nuclei. Experimental determination of the key ($p,γ$) cross sections has been playing an important role to verify nuclear reaction models and to provide rates of relevant ($γ,p$) reactions in $γ$-process. In this paper we report the first cross section measurements of $^{160}$Dy($p,γ$)$^{161}$Ho and $^{161}$Dy($p,n$)$^{161}$Ho in the beam energy range of 3.4 - 7.0 MeV, partially covering the Gamow window. Such determinations are possible by using two targets with various isotopic fractions. The cross section data can put a strong constraint on the nuclear level densities and gamma strength functions for $A \approx$ 160 in the Hauser-Feshbach statistical model. Furthermore, we find the best parameters for TALYS that reproduce the A $\thicksim$ 160 data available, $^{160}$Dy($p,γ$)$^{161}$Ho and $^{162}$Er($p,γ$)$^{163}$Tm, and recommend the constrained $^{161}$Ho($γ,p$)$^{160}$Dy reaction rates over a wide temperature range for $γ$-process network calculations. Although the determined $^{161}$Ho($γ$, p) stellar reaction rates at the temperature of 1 to 2 GK can differ by up to one order of magnitude from the NON-SMOKER predictions, it has a minor effect on the yields of $^{160}$Dy and accordingly the $p$-nuclei, $^{156,158}$Dy. A sensitivity study confirms that the cross section of $^{160}$Dy($p$, $γ$)$^{161}$Ho is measured precisely enough to predict yields of $p$-nuclei in the $γ$-process.

In this paper, the equation of state (EOS) of deconfined quark stars is studied in the framework of the two-flavor NJL model, and the self-consistent mean field approximation is employed by introducing a parameter $α$ combining the original Lagrangian and the Fierz-transformed Lagrangian, $\mathcal{L}_R= (1-α)\mathcal{L}+α\mathcal{L}_F$, to measure the weights of different interaction channels. It is believed that the deconfinement of phase transition happens along with the chiral phase transition. Thus, due to the lack of description of confinement in the NJL model, the vacuum pressure is set to confine quarks at low densities, which is the pressure corresponding to the critical point of chiral phase transition. We find that deconfined quark stars can reach over two-solar-mass, and the bag constant therefore shifts from $(130 ~\mathrm{MeV})^4$ to $(150 ~\mathrm{MeV})^4$ as $α$ grows. In addition, the tidal deformability $Λ$ is yielded ranging from 253 to 482 along with the decrease of $~α$, which satisfies the astronomical constraint of $Λ<800$ for 1.4-solar-mass neutron stars.

Based on the properties of uniform nuclear matter at the nuclear saturation density and basic thermodynamic relations, we first re-study the composition of matter on the surface of normal neutron stars and hybrid stars. It is found that the hybrid stars are composed of uniform hadronic matter on the surface rather than heavy nuclei. Then we use the Walceka model and the self-consistent NJL model to describe the equation of state of low-density hadrons and quark matter at high densities respectively, and the P--interpolation method is employed to connect the equation of state at the extreme densities to study hybrid stars. As a result, we find that the obtained hybrid star mass-radius relation and tidal deformability meet the latest astronomical data. More importantly, we find that the hybrid stars we obtained can be self-bound rather than gravitationally bound, which is completely different from previous related studies.

We report a systematic measurement of cumulants, $C_{n}$, for net-proton, proton and antiproton multiplicity distributions, and correlation functions, $κ_n$, for proton and antiproton multiplicity distributions up to the fourth order in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm {NN}}}$ = 7.7, 11.5, 14.5, 19.6, 27, 39, 54.4, 62.4 and 200 GeV. The $C_{n}$ and $κ_n$ are presented as a function of collision energy, centrality and kinematic acceptance in rapidity, $y$, and transverse momentum, $p_{T}$. The data were taken during the first phase of the Beam Energy Scan (BES) program (2010 -- 2017) at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) facility. The measurements are carried out at midrapidity ($|y| <$ 0.5) and transverse momentum 0.4 $<$ $p_{\rm T}$ $<$ 2.0 GeV/$c$, using the STAR detector at RHIC. We observe a non-monotonic energy dependence ($\sqrt{s_{\mathrm {NN}}}$ = 7.7 -- 62.4 GeV) of the net-proton $C_{4}$/$C_{2}$ with the significance of 3.1$σ$ for the 0-5\% central Au+Au collisions. This is consistent with the expectations of critical fluctuations in a QCD-inspired model. Thermal and transport model calculations show a monotonic variation with $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm {NN}}}$. For the multiparticle correlation functions, we observe significant negative values for a two-particle correlation function, $κ_2$, of protons and antiprotons, which are mainly due to the effects of baryon number conservation. Furthermore, it is found that the four-particle correlation function, $κ_4$, of protons plays a role in determining the energy dependence of proton $C_4/C_1$ below 19.6 GeV, which cannot be understood by the effect of baryon number conservation.

We report a study of the processes of $e^+e^-\to K^+ (D_s^- D^{*0} + D^{*-}_s D^0)$ based on $e^+e^-$ annihilation samples collected with the BESIII detector operating at BEPCII at five center-of-mass energies ranging from 4.628 to 4.698 GeV with a total integrated luminosity of 3.7 fb$^{-1}$. An excess over the known contributions of the conventional charmed mesons is observed near the $D_s^- D^{*0}$ and $D^{*-}_s D^0$ mass thresholds in the $K^{+}$ recoil-mass spectrum for events collected at $\sqrt{s}=4.681$ GeV. The structure matches a mass-dependent-width Breit-Wigner line shape, whose pole mass and width are determined as $(3982.5^{+1.8}_{-2.6}\pm2.1)$ MeV/$c^2$ and $(12.8^{+5.3}_{-4.4}\pm3.0)$ MeV, respectively. The first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. The significance of the resonance hypothesis is estimated to be 5.3 $σ$ over the contributions only from the conventional charmed mesons. This is the first candidate of the charged hidden-charm tetraquark with strangeness, decaying into $D_s^- D^{*0}$ and $D^{*-}_s D^0$. However, the properties of the excess need further exploration with more statistics.

Nuclei in the $sd$-shell demonstrate a remarkable interplay of cluster and mean-field phenomena. The $N=Z$ nuclei, such as $^{24}$Mg and $^{28}$Si, have been the focus of the theoretical study of both these phenomena in the past. The cluster and vortical mean-field phenomena can be probed by excitation of isoscalar monopole and dipole states in scattering of isoscalar particles such as deuterons or $α$ particles.
Inelastically scattered $α$ particles were momentum-analysed in the K600 magnetic spectrometer at iThemba LABS, Cape Town, South Africa. The scattered particles were detected in two multi-wire drift chambers and two plastic scintillators placed at the focal plane of the K600. In the theoretical discussion, the QRPA and AMD+GCM were used.
The QRPA calculations lead us to conclude that: i) the mean-field vorticity appears mainly in dipole states with $K=1$, ii) the dipole (monopole) states should have strong deformation-induced octupole (quadrupole) admixtures, and iii) that near the $α$-particle threshold, there should exist a collective state (with $K=0$ for prolate nuclei and $K=1$ for oblate nuclei) with an impressive octupole strength. The results of the AMD+GCM calculations suggest that some observed states may have a mixed (mean-field + cluster) character or correspond to particular cluster configurations.
A tentative correspondence between observed states and theoretical states from QRPA and AMD+GCM was established. The QRPA and AMD+GCM analysis shows that low-energy isoscalar dipole states combine cluster and mean-field properties. The QRPA calculations show that the low-energy vorticity is well localized in $^{24}$Mg, fragmented in $^{26}$Mg, and absent in $^{28}$Si.

Quark interactions with topological gluon configurations can induce local chirality imbalance and parity violation in quantum chromodynamics, which can lead to the chiral magnetic effect (CME) -- an electric charge separation along the strong magnetic field in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. The CME-sensitive azimuthal correlator observable ($Δγ$) is contaminated by background arising, in part, from resonance decays coupled with elliptic anisotropy ($v_{2}$). We report here differential measurements of the correlator as a function of the pair invariant mass ($m_{\rm inv}$) in 20-50\% centrality Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{\rm NN}}}$= 200 GeV by the STAR experiment at RHIC. Strong resonance background contributions to $Δγ$ are observed. At large $m_{\rm inv}$ where this background is significantly reduced, the $Δγ$ value is found to be significantly smaller. An event-shape-engineering technique is deployed to determine the $v_{2}$ background shape as a function of $m_{\rm inv}$. We extract a $v_2$-independent and $m_{\rm inv}$-averaged signal $Δγ_{\rm sig}$ = (0.03 $\pm$ 0.06 $\pm$ 0.08) $\times10^{-4}$, or $(2\pm4\pm5)\%$ of the inclusive $Δγ(m_{\rm inv}>0.4$ GeV/$c^2$)$ =(1.58 \pm 0.02 \pm 0.02) \times10^{-4}$, within pion $p_{T}$ = 0.2 - 0.8~\gevc and averaged over pseudorapidity ranges of $-1 < η< -0.05$ and $0.05 < η< 1$. This represents an upper limit of $0.23\times10^{-4}$, or $15\%$ of the inclusive result, at $95\%$ confidence level for the $m_{\rm inv}$-integrated CME contribution.

The measurements of particle multiplicity distributions have generated considerable interest in understanding the fluctuations of conserved quantum numbers in the Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) hadronization regime, in particular near a possible critical point and near the chemical freeze-out. We report the measurement of efficiency and centrality bin width corrected cumulant ratios ($C_{2}/C_{1}$, $C_{3}/C_{2}$) of net-$Λ$ distributions, in the context of both strangeness and baryon number conservation, as a function of collision energy, centrality and rapidity. The results are for Au + Au collisions at five beam energies ($\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 19.6, 27, 39, 62.4 and 200 GeV) recorded with the Solenoidal Tracker at RHIC (STAR). We compare our results to the Poisson and negative binomial (NBD) expectations, as well as to Ultra-relativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamics (UrQMD) and Hadron Resonance Gas (HRG) model predictions. Both NBD and Poisson baselines agree with data within the statistical and systematic uncertainties. The ratios of the measured cumulants show no features of critical fluctuations. The chemical freeze-out temperatures extracted from a recent HRG calculation, which was successfully used to describe the net-proton, net-kaon and net-charge data, indicate $Λ$ freeze-out conditions similar to those of kaons. However, large deviations are found when comparing to temperatures obtained from net-proton fluctuations. The net-$Λ$ cumulants show a weak, but finite, dependence on the rapidity coverage in the acceptance of the detector, which can be attributed to quantum number conservation.

In this work we use the equation of state (EOS) of (2+1)-flavor Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model to study the structure of the strange quark star. With a new free parameter $α$, the Lagrangian is constructed by two parts, the original NJL Lagrangian and the Fierz transformation of it, as $\mathcal{L}=(1-α)\mathcal{L}_{NJL}+α\mathcal{L}_{Fierz}$. To determine the range of $α$, we compare the binding energies in the 2-flavor and (2+1)-flavor cases. We also consider the constraints of chemical equilibrium and electric charge neutrality in the strange quark star and choose six representative EOSs with different $α$ and $B$ (bag constant) to study their influence on the structure of the strange quark star. As a result, we find that a larger $α$ and a smaller $B$ corresponds to a heavier star with a stiffer EOS. Furthermore, the heaviest strange quark star is in agreement with not only the recent mass observation of PSR J0740+6620 and the X-ray observations on radius measurements, but also the constraint on tidal deformability of GW170817.

Neutrino-nucleus cross section uncertainties are expected to be a dominant systematic in future accelerator neutrino experiments. The cross sections are determined by the linear response of the nucleus to the weak interactions of the neutrino, and are dominated by energy and distance scales of the order of the separation between nucleons in the nucleus. These response functions are potentially an important early physics application of quantum computers. Here we present an analysis of the resources required and their expected scaling for scattering cross section calculations. We also examine simple small-scale neutrino-nucleus models on modern quantum hardware. In this paper, we use variational methods to obtain the ground state of a three nucleon system (the triton) and then implement the relevant time evolution. In order to tame the errors in present-day NISQ devices, we explore the use of different error-mitigation techniques to increase the fidelity of the calculations.

In 10--80\% Au+Au collisions, the slope of the $v_{1}$ rapidity dependence ($dv_{1}/dy$), averaged over $D^{0}$ and $\overline{D^{0}}$ mesons, is -0.080 $\pm$ 0.017 (stat.) $\pm$ 0.016 (syst.) for transverse momentum $p_{\rm T}$ above 1.5~GeV/$c$. The absolute value of $D^0$-meson $dv_1/dy$ is about 25 times larger than that for charged kaons, with 3.4$σ$ significance. These data give a unique insight into the initial tilt of the produced matter, and offer constraints on the geometric and transport parameters of the hot QCD medium created in relativistic heavy-ion collisions.

According to the CPT theorem, which states that the combined operation of charge conjugation, parity transformation and time reversal must be conserved, particles and their antiparticles should have the same mass and lifetime but opposite charge and magnetic moment. Here, we test CPT symmetry in a nucleus containing a strange quark, more specifically in the hypertriton. This hypernucleus is the lightest one yet discovered and consists of a proton, a neutron, and a $Λ$ hyperon. With data recorded by the STAR detector{\cite{TPC,HFT,TOF}} at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, we measure the $Λ$ hyperon binding energy $B_Λ$ for the hypertriton, and find that it differs from the widely used value{\cite{B_1973}} and from predictions{\cite{2019_weak, 1995_weak, 2002_weak, 2014_weak}}, where the hypertriton is treated as a weakly bound system. Our results place stringent constraints on the hyperon-nucleon interaction{\cite{Hammer2002, STAR-antiH3L}}, and have implications for understanding neutron star interiors, where strange matter may be present{\cite{Chatterjee2016}}. A precise comparison of the masses of the hypertriton and the antihypertriton allows us to test CPT symmetry in a nucleus with strangeness for the first time, and we observe no deviation from the expected exact symmetry.

As is pointed out in a recent work (Phys. Rev. Lett. 120, 222001), quark matter may not be strange. Inspired by this argument, we use a new self-consistent mean field approximation method to study the equation of state of cold dense matter within the framework of the two-flavor NJL model. Then the mass-radius relationship of two-flavor pure quark stars is studied. In the new self-consistent mean field approximation method we introduced, there is a free parameter $α$, which reflects the weight of different interaction channels. In principal, $α$ should be determined by experiments rather than the self-consistent mean field approximation itself. In this paper, thus, the influence of the variation of $α$ on the critical chemical potential of chiral phase transition and the stiffness of the EOS are thoroughly explored. It is found that the stiffness of EOS can be increased greatly to support a two-solar-mass pure quark star when $α$ is greater than 0.95. This means that current theoretical calculations and astronomical observations cannot rule out the possibility of a two-flavor pure quark star.

The yield of deuterons is found to be well described by the thermal model. The collision energy, centrality, and transverse momentum dependence of the coalescence parameter $B_2$ are discussed. We find that the values of $B_2$ for anti-deuterons are systematically lower than those for deuterons, indicating that the correlation volume of anti-baryons is larger than that of baryons at $\sqrt{s_\text{NN}}$ from 19.6 to 39 GeV. In addition, values of $B_2$ are found to vary with collision energy and show a broad minimum around $\sqrt{s_\text{NN}}=\ $20 to 40 GeV, which might imply a change of the equation of state of the medium in these collisions.

For the same $\langle \mathrm{N_{ch}} \rangle$, the $v_1^{\text{even}}$ and $v_3$ coefficients are observed to be independent of collision system, while $v_2$ exhibits such a scaling only when normalized by the initial-state eccentricity ($\varepsilon_2$). The data also show that $\ln(v_2/\varepsilon_2)$ scales linearly with $\langle \mathrm{N_{ch}} \rangle^{-1/3}$. These measurements provide insight into initial-geometry fluctuations and the role of viscous hydrodynamic attenuation on $v_n$ from small to large collision systems.

The mechanism of multinucleon transfer (MNT) reactions for producing neutron-rich heavy nuclei around N = 126 is investigated within two different theoretical frameworks: dinuclear system (DNS) model and isospin-dependent quantum molecular dynamics (IQMD) model. The effects of mass asymmetry relaxation, N=Z equilibration, and shell closures on production cross sections of neutron-rich heavy nuclei are investigated. For the first time, the advantages for producing neutron-rich heavy nuclei around N = 126 is found in MNT reactions based on 238U target. We propose the reactions with 238U target for producing unknown neutron-rich heavy nuclei around N = 126 in the future.
