An important prerequisite for including these three-body forces in few- and many-body calculations is the accuracy and efficiency of their partial-wave decomposition. A careful benchmark of the ΛNN potential matrix elements, computed using two robust and efficient partial-wave decomposition methods, is presented. In addition, results of a first quantitative assessment for the contributions of $Λ$NN forces to the separation energies in A=3-5 hypernuclei are reported.

The $1π$-exchange and contact interactions are rewritten in a form suitable for evaluating partial-wave matrix elements. The $Λ$-deuteron folding potentials constructed from these 3BFs are evaluated to demonstrate their contributions to \h3t. The $1π$-exchange interaction provides an attractive effect in which the d-state component of the deuteron wave function plays an important role. The attractive contribution tends to cancel the repulsive ones from the $2π$-exchange and contact 3BFs. Faddeev calculations show that the net effect of the 3BFs to the \h3t separation energy is small in a range between $-5$ to $+20$ keV, depending on the NN interaction used. Although these results are based on speculative low-energy constants, they can serve as a reference for further investigations.

We build a relativistic model to perform calculations of exclusive, semi-exclusive and inclusive unpolarized cross sections and various polarization observables in electron and neutrino scattering experiments with deuteron targets. The strong interaction dynamics is defined by an explicit dynamical unitary representation of the Poincaré group, where representations of space translations and rotations in the interacting and non-interacting representations are the same. The Argonne V18 potential is used to construct a relativistic nucleon-nucleon interaction reproducing the experimental deuteron binding energy and nucleon-nucleon scattering observables. Our formalism does not include the pion production channel and neglects two-body contributions in the electromagnetic as well as in the weak nuclear current operator. We show that it is applicable to processes at kinematics, where the internal two-nucleon energy remains below the pion production threshold but the magnitude of the three-momentum transfer extends at least to several GeV.

The pi- + 2H -> n + n, pi- + 3H -> n + n + n, pi- + 3He -> n + d and pi- + 3He -> p + n + n capture reactions from the lowest atomic orbitals are studied under full inclusion of final state interactions. Our results are obtained with the single-nucleon and two-nucleon transition operators derived at leading order in chiral effective field theory. The initial and final three-nucleon states are calculated with the chiral nucleon-nucleon SMS potential up to N4LO+ augmented by the consistently regularized chiral N2LO three-nucleon potential. We found that absorption rates depend strongly on the nuclear pion absorption operator used, and its two-body parts change the rates by a few orders of magnitude. The final state interactions between nucleons generated by the two-nucleon forces are also important, while the three-nucleon interaction plays a visible role only in the pi- + 3He -> n + d reaction. Our absorption rate for the pi- + 2H -> n + n process is in good agreement with the experimental data from the hadronic ground-state broadening in pionic deuterium. The capture rates on 3He are also generally consistent with the spectroscopic data within error bars, though our central values are found to be systematically below the data. We show that for the three-body breakup processes the dominant contributions to the absorption rates arise from the quasi-free scattering and final-state interaction kinematical configurations.

Using the derived formula, a $Λ$-deuteron folding potential is evaluated. This information is valuable for inferring the possible contribution of the $ΛNN$ three-baryon forces to the hypertriton as the basis of further studies by sophisticated Faddeev calculations. A microscopic understanding of $ΛNN$ three-baryon forces together with two-body $ΛN$ interactions is essential for the description of hypernuclei and neutron-star matter.

We present a comprehensive investigation of few-nucleon systems as well as light and medium-mass nuclei up to $A=48$ using the current Low Energy Nuclear Physics International Collaboration two-nucleon interactions in combination with the third-order (N$^2$LO) three-nucleon forces. To address the systematic overbinding of nuclei starting from $A \sim 10$ found in our earlier study utilizing the N$^2$LO two- and three-nucleon forces, we take into account higher-order corrections to the two-nucleon potentials up through fifth order in chiral effective field theory. The resulting Hamiltonian can be completely determined using the $A=3$ binding energies and selected nucleon-deuteron cross sections as input. It is then shown to predict other nucleon-deuteron scattering observables and spectra of light $p$-shell nuclei, for which a detailed correlated truncation error analysis is performed, in agreement with experimental data. Moreover, the predicted ground state energies of nuclei in the oxygen isotopic chain from $^{14}$O to $^{26}$O as well as $^{40}$Ca and $^{48}$Ca show a remarkably good agreement with experimental values, given that the Hamiltonian is fixed completely from the $A \leq 3$ data, once the fourth-order (N$^3$LO) corrections to the two-nucleon interactions are taken into account. On the other hand, the charge radii are found to be underpredicted by $\sim 10\%$ for the oxygen isotopes and by almost $20\%$ for $^{40}$Ca and $^{48}$Ca.

We present a systematic investigation of few-nucleon systems and light nuclei using the current LENPIC interactions comprising semilocal momentum-space regularized two- and three-nucleon forces up to third chiral order (N$^2$LO). Following our earlier study utilizing the coordinate-space regularized interactions, the two low-energy constants entering the three-body force are determined from the triton binding energy and the differential cross section minimum in elastic nucleon-deuteron scattering. Predictions are made for selected observables in elastic nucleon-deuteron scattering and in the deuteron breakup reactions, for properties of the $A=3$ and $A=4$ nuclei, and for spectra of $p$-shell nuclei up to $A = 16$. A comprehensive error analysis is performed including an estimation of correlated truncation uncertainties for nuclear spectra. The obtained predictions are generally found to agree with experimental data within errors. Similar to the coordinate-space regularized chiral interactions at the same order, a systematic overbinding of heavier nuclei is observed, which sets in for $A \sim 10$ and increases with $A$.

We construct a folding potential between the $α$ and $Λ$ particles based on underlying nucleon-nucleon and hyperon-nucleon interactions. Starting from a phenomenological $Λ$-N potential and a Gaussian form of the $α$-particle wave function we obtain for the built $α$-$Λ$ interaction a bound $^5_Λ$He state with the binding energy (3.10 MeV), which is consistent with recent experimental data $3.12 \pm 0.02$ MeV. When in turn an exact solution of the four-body Faddeev-Yakubovsky equation for the $α$-particle calculated with the CDBonn, Nijmegen or Argonne V18 realistic nucleon-nucleon potential is used and the phenomenological Gaussian $Λ$-N potential is replaced by the realistic (Nijmegen NSC97f) potential approximated by a rank-1 separable form, then $^5_Λ$He is overbound. In particular, its binding energy given by the folding potential generated with the $α$ particle wave function based on the CDBonn potential is 7.47 MeV. Although the rank-1 separable $Λ$-N potential reproduces the exact scattering length and the effective range of the original $Λ$-N potential, the overbinding results from the lack of the required repulsive properties in the assumed separable form.

We report the first measurement of the \eep three-body breakup reaction cross sections in helium-3 ($^3$He) and tritium ($^3$H) at large momentum transfer ($\langle Q^2 \rangle \approx 1.9$ (GeV/c)$^2$) and $x_B>1$ kinematics, where the cross section should be sensitive to quasielastic (QE) scattering from single nucleons. The data cover missing momenta $40 \le p_{miss} \le 500$ MeV/c that, in the QE limit with no rescattering, equals the initial momentum of the probed nucleon. The measured cross sections are compared with state-of-the-art ab-initio calculations. Overall good agreement, within $\pm20\%$, is observed between data and calculations for the full $p_{miss}$ range for $^3$H and for $100 \le p_{miss} \le 350$ MeV/c for $^3$He. Including the effects of rescattering of the outgoing nucleon improves agreement with the data at $p_{miss} > 250$ MeV/c and suggests contributions from charge-exchange (SCX) rescattering. The isoscalar sum of $^3$He plus $^3$H, which is largely insensitive to SCX, is described by calculations to within the accuracy of the data over the entire $p_{miss}$ range. This validates current models of the ground state of the three-nucleon system up to very high initial nucleon momenta of $500$ MeV/c.

We discuss the current status of chiral effective field theory in the three-nucleon sector and present selected results for nucleon-deuteron scattering observables based on semilocal momentum-space-regularized chiral two-nucleon potentials together with consistently regularized three-nucleon forces up to third chiral order. Using a Bayesian model for estimating truncation errors, the obtained results are found to provide a good description of the experimental data. We confirm our earlier findings that a high-precision description of nucleon-deuteron scattering data below pion production threshold will require the theory to be pushed to fifth chiral order. This conclusion is substantiated by an exploratory study of selected short-range contributions to the three-nucleon force at that order, which, as expected, are found to have significant effects on polarization observables at intermediate and high energies. We also outline the challenges that will need to be addressed in order to push the chiral expansion of three-nucleon scattering observables to higher orders.

For most of these processes we provide predictions for the total cross sections and in the case of the (anti)neutrino-$^3$He and (anti)neutrino-$^3$H inelastic scattering we compute examples of essential response functions, using the AV18 nucleon-nucleon potential and a single-nucleon weak current operator. For the reactions with the deuteron we study relativistic effects in the final state kinematics and compare two-nucleon scattering states obtained in momentum and coordinate spaces. Our results from momentum space are compared with the theoretical predictions by G.Shen et al., Phys. Rev. C 86, 035503 (2012). The observed disagreement can be attributed to the differences in kinematics and in the weak current operator.

The employed Faddeev approach requires as main input amplitudes for the two-body subsystems $\bar KN \to \bar KN$ and $\bar KN \to πΣ$. For the latter results from recently published chiral unitary models of the $\bar KN$ interaction are utilized. The $\bar KN \to \bar KN$ amplitude itself, however, is taken from a recent partial-wave analysis. Due to the large incoming momentum of the $K^-$, the $\bar KN$ interaction is probed in a kinematical regime where those chiral potentials are no longer applicable. A comparison of the predicted spectrum for various $πΣ$ charge channels with preliminary data is made and reveals a remarkable agreement as far as the magnitude and the line shape in general is concerned. Noticeable differences observed in the $πΣ$ spectrum around the $\bar KN$ threshold, i.e. in the region of the $Λ$(1405) resonance, indicate a sensitivity to the details of the employed $\bar KN \to πΣ$ amplitudes and suggest that pertinent high-precision data could indeed provide substantial constraints on the structure of the $Λ$(1405).

The nucleon-nucleon J-matrix Inverse Scattering Potential JISP16 is applied to elastic nucleon-deuteron (Nd) scattering and the deuteron breakup process at the lab. nucleon energies up to 135 MeV. The formalism of the Faddeev equations is used to obtain 3N scattering states. We compare predictions based on the JISP16 force with data and with results based on various NN interactions: the CD Bonn, the AV18, the chiral force with the semi-local regularization at the 5th order of the chiral expansion and with low-momentum interactions obtained from the CD Bonn force as well as with the predictions from the combination of the AV18 NN interaction and the Urbana IX 3N force. JISP16 provides a satisfactory description of some observables at low energies but strong deviations from data as well as from standard and chiral potential predictions with increasing energy. However, there are also polarization observables at low energies for which the JISP16 predictions differ from those based on the other forces by a factor of two. The reason for such a behavior can be traced back to the P-wave components of the JISP16 force. At higher energies the deviations can be enhanced by an interference with higher partial waves and by the properties of the JISP16 deuteron wave function. In addition, we compare the energy and angular dependence of predictions based on the JISP16 force with the results of the low-momentum forces obtained with different values of the momentum cutoff parameter. We found that such low-momentum forces can be employed to interpret the Nd elastic scattering data only below some specific energy which depends on the cutoff parameter. Since JISP16 is defined in a finite oscillator basis, it has properties similar to low momentum interactions and its application to the description of Nd scattering data is limited to a low momentum transfer region.

We discuss the role of the three-nucleon isospin T=3/2 amplitude in elastic neutron-deuteron scattering and in the deuteron breakup reaction. The contribution of this amplitude originates from charge-independence breaking of the nucleon-nucleon potential and is driven by the difference between neutron-neutron (proton-proton) and neutron-proton forces. We study the magnitude of that contribution to the elastic scattering and breakup observables, taking the locally regularized chiral N4LO nucleon-nucleon potential supplemented by the chiral N2LO three-nucleon force. For comparison we employ also the Av18 nucleon-nucleon potential combined with the Urbana IX three-nucleon force. We find that the isospin T=3/2 component is important for the breakup reaction and the proper treatment of charge-independence breaking in this case requires the inclusion of the 1S0 state with isospin T=3/2. For neutron-deuteron elastic scattering the T=3/2 contributions are insignificant and charge-independence breaking can be accounted for by using the effective t-matrix generated with the so-called "2/3-1/3" rule.

The recently developed semi-local improved chiral nucleon-nucleon interaction is used for the first time to study several electromagnetic and weak processes at energies below the pion production threshold. Cross sections and selected polarization observables for deuteron photodisintegration, nucleon-deuteron radiative capture, three-body $^3$He photodisintegration as well as capture rates for decays of the muonic $^2$H and $^3$He atoms are calculated. The Lippmann-Schwinger and Faddeev equations in momentum space are solved to obtain nuclear states. The electromagnetic current operator is taken as a single nucleon current supplemented by many-body contributions induced via the Siegert theorem. For muon capture processes the nonrelativistic weak current together with the dominant relativistic corrections is used. Our results compare well with experimental data, demonstrating the same quality as is observed for the semi-phenomenological AV18 potential. Compared to the older version of the chiral potential with a nonlocal regularization, a much smaller cut-off dependence is found for the state-of-art chiral local interaction employed in this paper. Finally, estimates of errors due to the truncation of the chiral expansion are given.

Calculations beyond second order differ from experiment well outside the range of quantified uncertainties, providing truly unambiguous evidence for missing three-nucleon forces within the employed framework. The sizes of the required three-nucleon force contributions agree well with expectations based on Weinberg's power counting. We identify the energy range in elastic Nd scattering best suited to study three-nucleon force effects and estimate the achievable accuracy of theoretical predictions for various observables.

Our results for the two- and three-body break-up of 3He are calculated with a variety of nucleon-nucleon potentials, among which is the AV18 potential, augmented by the Urbana~IX three-nucleon potential. Most of our results are based on the single nucleon weak current operator. As a first step, we have tested our calculation in the case of the mu + 2H -> nu + n + n and mu + 3He -> nu + 3H reactions, for which theoretical predictions obtained in a comparable framework are available. Additionally, we have been able to obtain for the first time a realistic estimate for the total rates of the muon capture reactions on 3He in the break-up channels: 544 1/s and 154 1/s for the n + d and n + n + p channels, respectively. The potential of the subsystem in the model has been determined to make a coupling both of the ground state and the excited one inside the core nucleus. By a similar mechanism the three-nucleon system is solved with the three-body force originating from an isobar excitation of the nucleon. Inputting only the information of subsystem energy levels and widths we get the coupling constants of rank 1 Yamaguchi potential between the core nucleus and neutron. We calculate the Faddeev three-cluster equations to obtain the low-lying energy levels of 8He and 10He. We compare three methods to calculate the nucleon-nucleon t-matrix based on the three-dimensional formulation of J. Golak et al., Phys. Rev. C 81, 034006, (2010). In the first place we solve a system of complex linear inhomogeneous equations directly for the t-matrix. Our second method is based on iterations and a variant of the Lanczos algorithm. In the third case we obtain the t-matrix in two steps, solving a system of real linear equations for the k-matrix expansion coefficients and then solving an on-shell equation, which connects the scalar coefficients of the k- and t-matrices. A very good agreement among the three methods is demonstrated for selected nucleon-nucleon scattering observables using a chiral next-to-next-to-leading-order neutron-proton potential. We also apply our three-dimensional framework to the demanding problem of proton-proton scattering, using a corresponding version of the nucleon-nucleon potential and supplementing it with the (screened) Coulomb force, taken also in the three-dimensional form. We show converged results for two different screening functions and find a very good agreement with other methods dealing with proton-proton scattering.

Long-range contributions to the three-nucleon force that have been recently worked out in chiral effective field theory at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order are for the first time included in the triton and the doublet nucleon-deuteron scattering length calculations. The strengths of the two short-range terms available at this order in the chiral expansion are determined from the triton binding energy and the neutron-deuteron doublet scattering length. The structure of the resulting three-nucleon force is explored and effects for the two-nucleon correlation function in the triton are investigated. Expectation values of the individual contributions to the three-nucleon force in the triton are found to be in the range from a few 100 keV to about 1 MeV. Our study demonstrates that the very complicated operator structure of the novel chiral three-nucleon forces can be successively implemented in three-nucleon Faddeev calculations.

If one assumes a translationally invariant motion of the nucleons relative to the c. m. position in single particle mean fields a correlated single particle picture of the nuclear wave function emerges. A single particle product ansatz leads for that Hamiltonian to nonlinear equations for the single particle wave functions. In contrast to a standard not translationally invariant shell model picture those single particle s-, p- etc states are coupled. The strength of the resulting coupling is an open question. The Schroedinger equation for that Hamiltonian can be solved by few- and many -body techniques, which will allow to check the validity or non-validity of a single particle product ansatz. Realistic nuclear wave functions exhibit repulsive 2-body short range correlations. Therefore a translationally invariant single particle picture -- if useful at all -- can only be expected beyond those ranges. Since exact A = 3 and 4 nucleon ground state wave functions and beyond based on modern nuclear forces are available, the translationally invariant shell model picture can be optimized by an adjustment to the exact wave function and its validity or non-validity decided.

We extend our formulation of relativistic three-nucleon Faddeev equations to include both pairwise interactions and a three-nucleon force. Exact Poincare invariance is realized by adding interactions to the mass Casimir operator (rest Hamiltonian) of the non-interacting system without changing the spin Casimir operator. This is achieved by using interactions defined by rotationally invariant kernels that are functions of internal momentum variables and single-particle spins that undergo identical Wigner rotations. To solve the resulting equations one needs matrix elements of the three-nucleon force with these properties in a momentum-space partial-wave basis. We present two methods to calculate matrix elements of three-nucleon forces with these properties. For a number of examples we show that at higher energies, where effects of relativity and of three-nucleon forces are non-negligible, a consistent treatment of both is required to properly analyze the data.

A recently developed procedure for a partial wave decomposition of a three-nucleon force is applied to the pi-pi, pi-rho and rho-rho components of the Tucson-Melbourne three-nucleon potential. The resulting matrix elements for the pi-pi and pi-rho components are compared with the values obtained using the standard approach to the partial wave decomposition, in which the pi-rho expressions for the…

A recently developed procedure for a partial wave decomposition of a three-nucleon force is applied to the pi-pi, pi-rho and rho-rho components of the Tucson-Melbourne three-nucleon potential. The resulting matrix elements for the pi-pi and pi-rho components are compared with the values obtained using the standard approach to the partial wave decomposition, in which the pi-rho expressions for the matrix elements are also derived and presented. Several numerical tests and results for the triton binding energy and the correlation function prove the reliability and efficiency of the new method.

We formulate a general and exact method of partial wave decomposition (PWD) of any nucleon-nucleon (NN) potential and any three-nucleon (3N) force. The approach allows one to efficiently use symbolic algebra software to generate the interaction dependent part of the program code calculating the interaction. We demonstrate the feasibility of this approach for the one-boson exchange BonnB potential, a recent nucleon-nucleon chiral force and the chiral two-pion-exchange three-nucleon force. In all cases very good agreement between the new and the traditional PWD is found. The automated PWD offered by the new approach is of the utmost importance in view of future applications of numerous chiral N3LO contributions to the 3N force in three nucleon calculations.

The direct treatment of the Faddeev equation for the three-boson system in 3 dimensions is generalized to nucleons. The one Faddeev equation for identical bosons is replaced by a strictly finite set of coupled equations for scalar functions which depend only on 3 variables. The spin-momentum dependence occurring as scalar products in 2N and 3N forces accompanied by scalar functions is supplemented by a corresponding expansion of the Faddeev amplitudes. After removing the spin degrees of freedom by suitable operations only scalar expressions depending on momenta remain. The corresponding steps are performed for the deuteron leading to two coupled equations.

We solve the Faddeev equation in an exactly Poincare invariant formulation of the three-nucleon problem. The dynamical input is a relativistic nucleon-nucleon interaction that is exactly on-shell equivalent to the high precision CDBonn NN interaction. S-matrix cluster properties dictate how the two-body dynamics is embedded in the three-nucleon mass operator. We find that for neutron laboratory energies above 20 MeV relativistic effects on Ay are negligible. For energies below 20 MeV dynamical effects lower the nucleon analyzing power maximum slightly by 2% and Wigner rotations lower it further up to 10 % increasing thus disagreement between data and theory. This indicates that three-nucleon forces must provide an even larger increase of the Ay maximum than expected up to now.

Equivalent interactions in a low-momentum space for the $ΛN$, $ΣN$ and $ΞN$ interactions are calculated, using the SU$_6$ quark model potential as well as the Nijmegen OBEP model as the input bare interaction. Because the two-body scattering data has not been accumulated sufficiently to determine the hyperon-nucleon interactions unambiguously, the construction of the potential even in low-energy regions has to rely on a theoretical model. The equivalent interaction after removing high-momentum components is still model dependent. Because this model dependence reflects the character of the underlying potential model, it is instructive for better understanding of baryon-baryon interactions in the strangeness sector to study the low-momentum space $YN$ interactions.

The potentials $V (v)$ in the nonrelativistic (relativistic) nucleon-nucleon (NN) Schroedingerequation are related by a quadratic equation. That equation is numerically solved, thus providing phase equivalent v- potentials related for instance to the high precision NN potentials, which are adjusted to NN phase shift and mixing parameters in a nonrelativistic Schroedinger equation. The relativistic NN potentials embedded in a three-nucleon (3N)system for total NN momenta different from zero are also constructed in a numerically precise manner. They enter into the relativistic interacting 3N mass operator, which is needed for relativistic 3N calculations for bound and scattering states.

We formulate an approximate relativistic framework for an analysis of the 3He(e,e'p)pn and 3He(e,e'n)pp reactions with polarized electrons and 3He in the initial state. Restricting the rescattering series to one term linear in the two-nucleon t-matrix we incorporate various relativistic features when calculating a nuclear current matrix element. These relativistic ingredients encompass the relativistic 3He wave function based on the concept of the Lorentz boosted nucleon-nucleon potential together with the boosted 2N t-matrix, relativistic kinematics and relativistic single-nucleon current operator. This allows us to estimate the magnitude of relativistic effects not included in the standard nonrelativistic approach.

The data have been compared to predictions of modern nuclear forces obtained by solving the three-nucleon Faddeev equations in momentum space. Realistic (semi) phenomenological nucleon-nucleon potentials combined with model three-nucleon forces and modern chiral nuclear forces have been used. The AV18, CD Bonn, Nijm I and II nucleon-nucleon interactions have been applied alone or combined with the Tucson-Melbourne 99 three-nucleon force, adjusted separately for each potential to reproduce the triton binding energy. For the AV18 potential also the Urbana IX three-nucleon force have been used. In addition chiral NN potentials in the next-to-leading-order and chiral two- and three-nucleon forces in the next-to-next-to-leading-order have been applied. Only when three-nucleon forces are included a satisfactory description of all data results. For the chiral approach the restriction to the forces in the next-to-leading order is insufficient. Only when going over to the next-to-next-to-leading order one gets a satisfactory description of the data, similar to the one obtained with the (semi) phenomenological forces.

A realistic nucleon-nucleon potential is transformed into a low-momentum effective one (LMNN) using the Okubo theory. The separable potentials are converted from the LMNN with a universal separable expansion method and a simple Legendre expansion. Through the calculation of the triton binding energies, the separability for the convergence of these ranks is evaluated. It is found that there is a tendency for the lower momentum cutoff parameter $Λ$ of LMNN to gain good separability.
