Abstract:
The spin-exotic hybrid meson $π_{1}(1600)$ is predicted to have a large decay rate to the $ωππ$ final state. We combine these limits with lattice calculations of decay widths and find that photoproduction of $η'π$ is the most sensitive two-body system to search for the $π_1(1600)$.

We report the measurement of spin-density matrix elements of the $Δ^{++}(1232)$ in the photoproduction reaction $γp \to π^-Δ^{++}(1232)$ with the GlueX experiment in Hall D at Jefferson Lab. The measurement used a linearly polarized photon beam with $E_γ=8.2-8.8$~GeV and the statistical precision exceeds the previous measurement from SLAC by three orders of magnitude for the momentum transfer squared region $-t < 1.4$ GeV$^2$. The data are sensitive to the previously undetermined relative sign between couplings in existing Regge exchange models. Linear combinations of the extracted SDMEs allow for a decomposition into natural and unnatural exchange amplitudes, which shows that the unnatural exchange plays an important role in the low $-t$ region.

The recent PREX-2 and CREX data on the model-independent extraction of the charge-weak form factor difference $ΔF_{\rm CW}$ in $^{208}$Pb and $^{48}$Ca challenge modern nuclear energy density functionals (EDFs) as well as our present understanding on the neutron skin and nuclear symmetry energy. Within the Skyrme-like EDFs, we demonstrate that the isovector spin-orbit interaction can strongly change the $ΔF_{\rm CW}$ in $^{48}$Ca while it has essentially no influence on the $ΔF_{\rm CW}$ in $^{208}$Pb, mainly due to the eight spin-orbit unpaired $1f_{7/2}$ neutrons in $^{48}$Ca. To simultaneously describe PREX-2 and CREX data in $1σ$ error, we find the strength of isovector spin-orbit interaction should be larger than about four times of that in the conventional Skyrme-like EDFs, implying the neutrons and protons have significantly different spin-orbit interaction. To further reconcile the data on electric dipole polarizability in $^{208}$Pb and $^{48}$Ca, we obtain $L \approx 55$ MeV for the slope parameter of the symmetry energy, $Δr_{\rm np}(^{208}\rm{Pb}) \approx 0.19$ fm and $Δr_{\rm np}(^{48}\rm{Ca}) \approx 0.12$ fm for the neutron skin thickness. The implications of the strong isovector spin-orbit interaction are discussed.

The extended kernel ridge regression (EKRR) method with odd-even effects was adopted to improve the description of the nuclear charge radius using five commonly used nuclear models. These are: (i) the isospin dependent $A^{1/3}$ formula, (ii) relativistic continuum Hartree-Bogoliubov (RCHB) theory, (iii) Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) model HFB25, (iv) the Weizsäcker-Skyrme (WS) model WS$^\ast$, and (v) HFB25$^\ast$ model. In the last two models, the charge radii were calculated using a five-parameter formula with the nuclear shell corrections and deformations obtained from the WS and HFB25 models, respectively. For each model, the resultant root-mean-square deviation for the 1014 nuclei with proton number $Z \geq 8$ can be significantly reduced to 0.009-0.013~fm after considering the modification with the EKRR method. The best among them was the RCHB model, with a root-mean-square deviation of 0.0092~fm. The extrapolation abilities of the KRR and EKRR methods for the neutron-rich region were examined and it was found that after considering the odd-even effects, the extrapolation power was improved compared with that of the original KRR method. The strong odd-even staggering of nuclear charge radii of Ca and Cu isotopes and the abrupt kinks across the neutron $N=126$ and 82 shell closures were also calculated and could be reproduced quite well by calculations using the EKRR method.

This study examines the chemical freeze-out of hadrons, encompassing light-flavor, strange-flavor, and light nuclei produced in Au+Au collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). By conducting a thermal analysis of hadron yields with and without the inclusion of light nuclei yields, we observe a discernible decrease in the chemical freeze-out temperature $T_{\textrm{ch}}$ when light nuclei yields are considered. This suggests that light nuclei formation occurs at a later stage of the system evolution. Furthermore, the $T_{\textrm{ch}}$ associated with strange-flavor particles is found to be approximately $20-30$ MeV higher than that for light-flavor particles and light nuclei, hinting at the existence of multiple freeze-out hyper-surfaces for different hadron types in heavy-ion collisions. We present parameterized formulas that describe the energy dependence of $T_{\textrm{ch}}$ and $μ_B$ for four distinct particle sets in central Au+Au collisions. These formulas allow for the selection of appropriate parameters tailored to specific studies, facilitating a more nuanced understanding of the freeze-out process.

The H1 Collaboration at HERA reports the first measurement of groomed event shape observables in deep inelastic electron-proton scattering (DIS) at $\sqrt{s}=319$ GeV, using data recorded between the years 2003 and 2007 with an integrated luminosity of $351$ pb$^{-1}$. Event shapes provide incisive probes of perturbative and non-perturbative QCD. Grooming techniques have been used for jet measurements in hadronic collisions; this paper presents the first application of grooming to DIS data. The analysis is carried out in the Breit frame, utilizing the novel Centauro jet clustering algorithm that is designed for DIS event topologies. Events are required to have squared momentum-transfer $Q^2 > 150$ GeV$^2$ and inelasticity $ 0.2 < y < 0.7$. We report measurements of the production cross section of groomed event 1-jettiness and groomed invariant mass for several choices of grooming parameter. Monte Carlo model calculations and analytic calculations based on Soft Collinear Effective Theory are compared to the measurements.

The H1 Collaboration reports the first measurement of the 1-jettiness event shape observable $τ_1^b$ in neutral-current deep-inelastic electron-proton scattering (DIS). The observable $τ_1^b$ is equivalent to a thrust observable defined in the Breit frame. The data sample was collected at the HERA $ep$ collider in the years 2003-2007 with center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=319\,\text{GeV}$, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $351.1\,\text{pb}^{-1}$. Triple differential cross sections are provided as a function of $τ_1^b$, event virtuality $Q^2$, and inelasticity $y$, in the kinematic region $Q^2>150\,\text{GeV}^{2}$. Single differential cross section are provided as a function of $τ_1^b$ in a limited kinematic range. Double differential cross sections are measured, in contrast, integrated over $τ_1^b$ and represent the inclusive neutral-current DIS cross section measured as a function of $Q^2$ and $y$. The data are compared to a variety of predictions and include classical and modern Monte Carlo event generators, predictions in fixed-order perturbative QCD where calculations up to $\mathcal{O}(α_s^3)$ are available for $τ_1^b$ or inclusive DIS, and resummed predictions at next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy matched to fixed order predictions at $\mathcal{O}(α_s^2)$. These comparisons reveal sensitivity of the 1-jettiness observable to QCD parton shower and resummation effects, as well as the modeling of hadronization and fragmentation. Within their range of validity, the fixed-order predictions provide a good description of the data. Monte Carlo event generators are predictive over the full measured range and hence their underlying models and parameters can be constrained by comparing to the presented data.

The Breit frame provides a natural frame to analyze lepton-proton scattering events. In this reference frame, the parton model hard interactions between a quark and an exchanged boson defines the coordinate system such that the struck quark is back-scattered along the virtual photon momentum direction. In Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), higher order perturbative or non-perturbative effects can change this picture drastically. As Bjorken-$x$ decreases below one half, a rather peculiar event signature is predicted with increasing probability, where no radiation is present in one of the two Breit-frame hemispheres and all emissions are to be found in the other hemisphere. At higher orders in $α_s$ or in the presence of soft QCD effects, predictions of the rate of these events are far from trivial, and that motivates measurements with real data. We report on the first observation of the empty current hemisphere events in electron-proton collisions at the HERA collider using data recorded with the H1 detector at a center-of-mass energy of 319 GeV. The fraction of inclusive neutral-current DIS events with an empty hemisphere is found to be $0.0112 \pm 3.9\,\%_\text{stat} \pm 4.5\,\%_\text{syst} \pm 1.6\,\%_\text{mod}$ in the selected kinematic region of $150< Q^2<1500$ GeV$^2$ and inelasticity $0.14< y<0.7$. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 351.1 pb$^{-1}$, sufficient to enable differential cross section measurements of these events. The results show an enhanced discriminating power at lower Bjorken-$x$ among different Monte Carlo event generator predictions.

It replaces the results of previous attempts to determine the ratio of $^8$He to $^9$Li production that yielded a wide range of limits from 0 to 30\%. The results provide future liquid-scintillator-based experiments with improved ability to predict cosmogenic backgrounds.

The mass table in the deformed relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov theory in continuum (DRHBc) with the PC-PK1 density functional has been established for even-$Z$ nuclei with $8\le Z\le120$, extended from the previous work for even-even nuclei [Zhang $\it{et.~al.}$ (DRHBc Mass Table Collaboration), At. Data Nucl. Data Tables 144, 101488 (2022)]. The calculated binding energies, two-nucleon and one-neutron separation energies, root-mean-square (rms) radii of neutron, proton, matter, and charge distributions, quadrupole deformations, and neutron and proton Fermi surfaces are tabulated and compared with available experimental data. A total of 4829 even-$Z$ nuclei are predicted to be bound, with an rms deviation of 1.477 MeV from the 1244 mass data. Good agreement with the available experimental odd-even mass differences, $α$ decay energies, and charge radii is also achieved. The description accuracy for nuclear masses and nucleon separation energies as well as the prediction for drip lines is compared with the results obtained from other relativistic and nonrelativistic density functional. The comparison shows that the DRHBc theory with PC-PK1 provides an excellent microscopic description for the masses of even-$Z$ nuclei. The systematics of the nucleon separation energies, odd-even mass differences, pairing energies, two-nucleon gaps, $α$ decay energies, rms radii, quadrupole deformations, potential energy curves, neutron density distributions, and neutron mean-field potentials are discussed.

Clear signals are observed for the two reactions. The cross sections in $-0.9\leq\rm{cos}θ_{Λ/\barΛ}\leq0.9$ are measured to be $σ(Λp\rightarrowΛp)=(12.2\pm1.6_{\rm{stat}}\pm1.1_{\rm{sys}})$ mb and $σ(\barΛ p\rightarrow\barΛ p)=(17.5\pm2.1_{\rm{stat}}\pm1.6_{\rm{sys}})$ mb at the $Λ/\barΛ$ momentum of $1.074$ GeV/$c$ within a range of $\pm0.017$ GeV/$c$, where the $θ_{Λ/\barΛ}$ are the scattering angles of the $Λ/\barΛ$ in the $Λp/\barΛp$ rest frames. Furthermore, the differential cross sections of the two reactions are also measured, where there is a slight tendency of forward scattering for $Λp\rightarrowΛp$, and a strong forward peak for $\barΛp\rightarrow\barΛp$. We present an approach to extract the total elastic cross sections by extrapolation. The study of $\barΛp\rightarrow\barΛp$ represents the first study of antihyperon-nucleon scattering, and these new measurements will serve as important inputs for the theoretical understanding of the (anti)hyperon-nucleon interaction.

Flow harmonic coefficients, $v_n$, which are the key to studying the hydrodynamics of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) created in heavy-ion collisions, have been measured in various collision systems and kinematic regions and using various particle species. The study of flow harmonics in a wide pseudorapidity range is particularly valuable to understand the temperature dependence of the shear viscosity to entropy density ratio of the QGP. This paper presents the first LHCb results of the second- and the third-order flow harmonic coefficients of charged hadrons as a function of transverse momentum in the forward region, corresponding to pseudorapidities between 2.0 and 4.9, using the data collected from PbPb collisions in 2018 at a center-of-mass energy of $5.02$ TeV. The coefficients measured using the two-particle angular correlation analysis method are smaller than the central-pseudorapidity measurements at ALICE and ATLAS from the same collision system but share similar features.

The nuclear modification factors of both $D^+_{s}$ and $D^+$ mesons are determined as a function of transverse momentum, $p_{\mathrm{T}}$, and rapidity. In addition, the $D^+_{s}$ to $D^+$ cross-section ratio is measured as a function of the charged particle multiplicity in the event. An enhanced $D^+_{s}$ to $D^+$ production in high-multiplicity events is observed for the whole measured $p_{\mathrm{T}}$ range, in particular at low $p_{\mathrm{T}}$ and backward rapidity, where the significance exceeds six standard deviations. This constitutes the first observation of strangeness enhancement in charm quark hadronization in high-multiplicity $p\mathrm{Pb}$ collisions. The results are also qualitatively consistent with the presence of quark coalescence as an additional charm quark hadronization mechanism in high-multiplicity proton-lead collisions.

The study covers the forward ($1.5<y^*<4.0$) and backward ($-5.0<y^*<-2.5$) rapidity regions, where $y^*$ is the $J/ψ$ rapidity in the nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass system. Forward and backward rapidity samples correspond to integrated luminosities of 13.6 $\pm$ 0.3 nb$^{-1}$ and 20.8 $\pm$ 0.5 nb$^{-1}$, respectively. The result is presented as a function of the $J/ψ$ transverse momentum $p_{T,J/ψ}$ in the range 1$<p_{T, J/ψ}<20$ GeV/$c$. The $F_{χc}$ fraction at forward rapidity is compatible with the LHCb measurement performed in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV, whereas the result at backward rapidity is 2.4 $σ$ larger than in the forward region for $1<p_{T, J/ψ}<3$ GeV/$c$. The increase of $F_{χc}$ at low $p_{T, J/ψ}$ at backward rapidity is compatible with the suppression of the $ψ$(2S) contribution to the prompt $J/ψ$ yield. The lack of in-medium dissociation of $χ_c$ states observed in this study sets an upper limit of 180 MeV on the free energy available in these pPb collisions to dissociate or inhibit charmonium state formation.

Proton-proton collisions are studied at center-of-mass energies of $5.02$ and $13~{\rm TeV}$, and proton-lead collisions are studied at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon of $8.16~{\rm TeV}$. The studies are performed in center-of-mass rapidity regions $2.5<y_{\rm c.m.}<3.5$ (forward rapidity) and $-4.0<y_{\rm c.m.}<-3.0$ (backward rapidity) defined relative to the proton beam direction. The $η$ and $η'$ production cross sections are measured differentially as a function of transverse momentum for $1.5<p_{\rm T}<10~{\rm GeV}$ and $3<p_{\rm T}<10~{\rm GeV}$, respectively. The differential cross sections are used to calculate nuclear modification factors. The nuclear modification factors for $η$ and $η'$ mesons agree at both forward and backward rapidity, showing no significant evidence of mass dependence. The differential cross sections of $η$ mesons are also used to calculate $η/π^0$ cross section ratios, which show evidence of a deviation from the world average. These studies offer new constraints on mass-dependent nuclear effects in heavy-ion collisions, as well as $η$ and $η'$ meson fragmentation.

At the origin of the Universe, asymmetry between the amount of created matter and antimatter led to the matter-dominated Universe as we know today. The origins of this asymmetry remain not completely understood yet. High-energy nuclear collisions create conditions similar to the Universe microseconds after the Big Bang, with comparable amounts of matter and antimatter. Much of the created antimatter escapes the rapidly expanding fireball without annihilating, making such collisions an effective experimental tool to create heavy antimatter nuclear objects and study their properties, ho** to shed some light on existing questions on the asymmetry between matter and antimatter. Here we report the first observation of the antimatter hypernucleus \hbox{$^4_{\barΛ}\overline{\hbox{H}}$}, composed of a $\barΛ$ , an antiproton and two antineutrons. The discovery was made through its two-body decay after production in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions by the STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. In total, 15.6 candidate \hbox{$^4_{\barΛ}\overline{\hbox{H}}$} antimatter hypernuclei are obtained with an estimated background count of 6.4. The lifetimes of the antihypernuclei \hbox{$^3_{\barΛ}\overline{\hbox{H}}$} and \hbox{$^4_{\barΛ}\overline{\hbox{H}}$} are measured and compared with the lifetimes of their corresponding hypernuclei, testing the symmetry between matter and antimatter. Various production yield ratios among (anti)hypernuclei and (anti)nuclei are also measured and compared with theoretical model predictions, shedding light on their production mechanisms.

We present a lattice QCD calculation of the nucleon electric polarizabilities at the physical pion mass. Our findings reveal the substantial contributions of the $Nπ$ states to these polarizabilities. Without considering these contributions, the lattice results fall significantly below the experimental values, consistent with previous lattice studies. This observation has motivated us to compute both the parity-negative $Nπ$ scattering length and $Nγ^*\to Nπ$ matrix elements using lattice QCD. Our results confirm that the inclusion of dynamic $Nπ$ contributions allows for reliable determination of the polarizabilities from lattice QCD. This methodology lays the groundwork for future lattice QCD investigations into various other polarizabilities.

We report results on an elastic cross section measurement in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}=510$ GeV, obtained with the Roman Pot setup of the STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The elastic differential cross section is measured in the four-momentum transfer squared range $0.23 \leq -t \leq 0.67$ GeV$^2$. We find that a constant slope $B$ does not fit the data in the aforementioned $t$ range, and we obtain a much better fit using a second-order polynomial for $B(t)$. The $t$ dependence of $B$ is determined using six subintervals of $t$ in the STAR measured $t$ range, and is in good agreement with the phenomenological models. The measured elastic differential cross section $\mathrm{d}σ/\mathrm{dt}$ agrees well with the results obtained at $\sqrt{s} = 546$ GeV for proton--antiproton collisions by the UA4 experiment. We also determine that the integrated elastic cross section within the STAR $t$-range is $σ^\mathrm{fid}_\mathrm{el} = 462.1 \pm 0.9 (\mathrm{stat.}) \pm 1.1 (\mathrm {syst.}) \pm 11.6 (\mathrm {scale})$~$μ\mathrm{b}$.

This paper presents research that focuses on nonflow contribution subtraction in heavy-ion collisions, using a multiphase transport model (AMPT). Specifically, the study aims to investigate the behavior of charged particle elliptic flow ($v_{\rm 2}$) in d-Au collisions at a collision energy of $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 200$ GeV and to determine the impact of nonflow sources, such as jet correlations and resonance decays, in small collision systems. To reduce nonflow effects, the per-trigger yield distribution in peripheral d-Au collisions or pp collisions with the same collision energy is subtracted. Our results show that the nonflow effects in central and mid-central collisions are not strongly dependent on subtracting the per-trigger yield distribution in peripheral d-Au collisions or pp collisions. Furthermore, the elliptic flow of charged particles, after removing nonflow effects through two subtracting methods from this work, exhibits consistency in various collision centrality classes. We also discuss comparisons with measurements from d-Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 200$ GeV. Overall, this work provides valuable insights and serves as a reference for researchers studying nonflow contribution subtraction in experiments with small collision systems.

A significant $v_3$ signal for protons is observed, which increases for higher rapidity, higher transverse momentum, and more peripheral collisions. The triangular flow is essentially rapidity-odd with a slope at mid-rapidity, $dv_3/dy|_{(y=0)}$, opposite in sign compared to the slope for directed flow. No significant $v_3$ signal is observed for charged pions and kaons. Comparisons with models suggest that a mean field potential is required to describe these results, and that the triangular shape of the participant nucleons is the result of stop** and nuclear geometry.

We present the first lattice QCD calculation of the universal axial $γW$-box contribution $\square_{γW}^{VA}$ to both superallowed nuclear and neutron beta decays. This contribution emerges as a significant component within the theoretical uncertainties surrounding the extraction of $|V_{ud}|$ from superallowed decays. Our calculation is conducted using two domain wall fermion ensembles at the physical pion mass. To construct the nucleon 4-point correlation functions, we employ the random sparsening field technique. Furthermore, we incorporate long-distance contributions to the hadronic function using the infinite-volume reconstruction method. Upon performing the continuum extrapolation, we arrive at $\square_{γW}^{VA}=3.65(8)_{\mathrm{lat}}(1)_{\mathrm{PT}}\times10^{-3}$. Consequently, this yields a slightly higher value of $|V_{ud}|=0.97386(11)_{\mathrm{exp.}}(9)_{\mathrm{RC}}(27)_{\mathrm{NS}}$, reducing the previous $2.1σ$ tension with the CKM unitarity to $1.8σ$. Additionally, we calculate the vector $γW$-box contribution to the axial charge $g_A$, denoted as $\square_{γW}^{VV}$, and explore its potential implications.

Within the TMEP, we present a detailed study of the performance of different transport models in Sn+Sn collisions at $270A$ MeV, and put particular emphasis on the production of pions and $Δ$ resonances, which have been used as probes of the nuclear symmetry energy. We prescribe a common and rather simple physics model, and follow in detail the results of 4 BUU models and 6 QMD models. The nucleonic evolution of the collision and the nucleonic observables in these codes do not completely converge, but the differences among the codes can be understood as being due to several reasons: the basic differences between BUU and QMD models in the representation of the phase-space distributions, computational differences in the mean-field evaluation, and differences in the adopted strategies for the Pauli blocking in the collision integrals. For pionic observables, we find that a higher maximum density leads to an enhanced pion yield and a reduced $π^-/π^+$ yield ratio, while a more effective Pauli blocking generally leads to a slightly suppressed pion yield and an enhanced $π^-/π^+$ yield ratio. We specifically investigate the effect of the Coulomb force, and find that it increases the total $π^-/π^+$ yield ratio but reduces the ratio at high pion energies, although differences in its implementations do not have a dominating role in the differences among the codes. Taking into account only the results of codes that strictly follow the homework specifications, we find a convergence of the codes in the final charged pion yield ratio to a $1σ$ deviation of about $5\%$. However, the uncertainty is expected to be reduced to about $1.6\%$ if the same or similar strategies and ingredients, i.e., an improved Pauli blocking and calculation of the non-linear term in the mean-field potential, are similarly used in all codes.

Nuclear isomers play a key role in the creation of the elements in the universe and have a number of fascinating potential applications related to the controlled release of nuclear energy on demand. Particularly, $^{93m}$Mo isomer is a good candidate for studying the depletion of nuclear isomer via nuclear excitation by electron capture. For such purposes, efficient approach for $^{93m}$Mo production needs to be explored. In the present work, we demonstrate experimentally an efficient production of $^{93m}$Mo through $^{93}$Nb(p, n) reaction induced by intense laser pulse. When a ps-duration, 100-J laser pulse is employed, the $^{93m}$Mo isomer at 2425 keV (21/2$^+$, $T_{1/2}$ = 6.85 h) are generated with a high yield of $1.8\times10^6$ particles/shot. The resulting peak efficiency is expected to be $10^{17}$ particles/s, which is at least five orders of magnitudes higher than using classical proton accelerator. The effects of production and destruction of $^{93m}$Mo on the controversial astrophysical p-isotope $^{92}$Mo are studied. It is found that the $^{93}$Nb(p, n)-$^{93m}$Mo reaction is an important production path for ^{93m}Mo seed nucleus, and the influence of ^{93m}Mo-^{92}Mo reaction flow on ^{92}Mo production cannot be ignored. In addition, we propose to directly measure the astrophysical rate of (p, n) reaction using laser-induced proton beam since the latter one fits the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution well. We conclude that laser-induced proton beam opens a new path to produce nuclear isomers with high peak efficiency towards the understanding of p-nuclei nucleosythesis.

The central speed of sound (SS) measures the stiffness of the Equation of State (EOS) of superdense neutron star (NS) matter. Its variations with density and radial coordinate in NSs in conventional analyses often suffer from uncertainties of the specific nuclear EOSs used. Using the central SS and NS mass/radius scaling obtained from solving perturbatively the scaled Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff (TOV) equations, we study the variations of SS, trace anomaly and several closely related properties of NSs in an EOS-model independent manner. We find that the SS increases with the reduced central pressure $\widehat{P}_{\rm{c}}\equiv P_{\rm{c}}/\varepsilon_{\rm{c}}$ (scaled by the central energy density $\varepsilon_{\rm{c}}$), and the conformal bound for SS tends to break down for NSs with masses higher than about 1.9$M_{\odot}$. The ratio $P/\varepsilon$ is upper bounded as $P/\varepsilon\lesssim0.374$ around the centers of stable NSs. We demonstrate that it is an intrinsic property of strong-field gravity and is more relevant than the perturbative QCD bound on it. While a sharp phase transition at high densities characterized by a sudden vanishing of SS in cores of massive NSs are basically excluded, the probability for a continuous crossover signaled by a peaked radial profile of SS is found to be enhanced as $\widehat{P}_{\rm{c}}$ decreases, implying it likely happens near the centers of massive NSs. Moreover, a new and more stringent causality boundary as $R_{\max}/\rm{km}\gtrsim 4.73M_{\rm{NS}}^{\max}/M_{\odot}+1.14$ for NS M-R curve is found to be excellently consistent with observational data on NS masses and radii. Furthermore, new constraints on the ultimate energy density and pressure allowed in NSs before collapsing into black holes are obtained and compared with earlier predictions in the literature.

Angular distributions of charged particles relative to jet axes are studied in $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}$ = 200 GeV Au+Au collisions as a function of the jet orientation with respect to the event plane. This differential study tests the expected path-length dependence of energy loss experienced by a hard-scattered parton as it traverses the hot and dense medium formed in heavy-ion collisions. A second-order event plane is used in the analysis as an experimental estimate of the reaction plane formed by the collision impact parameter and the beam direction. Charged-particle jets with $15 < p_{\rm T, jet} <$ 20 and $20 < p_{\rm T, jet} <$ 40 GeV/$c$ were reconstructed with the anti-$k_{\rm T}$ algorithm with radius parameter setting of (R=0.4) in the 20-50\% centrality bin to maximize the initial-state eccentricity of the interaction region. The reaction plane fit method is implemented to remove the flow-modulated background with better precision than prior methods. Yields and widths of jet-associated charged-hadron distributions are extracted in three angular bins between the jet axis and the event plane. The event-plane (EP) dependence is further quantified by ratios of the associated yields in different EP bins. No dependence on orientation of the jet axis with respect to the event plane is seen within the uncertainties in the kinematic regime studied. This finding is consistent with a similar experimental observation by ALICE in $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}$ = 2.76 TeV Pb+Pb collision data.

This document presents the initial scientific case for upgrading the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) at Jefferson Lab (JLab) to 22 GeV. It is the result of a community effort, incorporating insights from a series of workshops conducted between March 2022 and April 2023. With a track record of over 25 years in delivering the world's most intense and precise multi-GeV electron beams, CEBAF's potential for a higher energy upgrade presents a unique opportunity for an innovative nuclear physics program, which seamlessly integrates a rich historical background with a promising future. The proposed physics program encompass a diverse range of investigations centered around the nonperturbative dynamics inherent in hadron structure and the exploration of strongly interacting systems. It builds upon the exceptional capabilities of CEBAF in high-luminosity operations, the availability of existing or planned Hall equipment, and recent advancements in accelerator technology. The proposed program cover various scientific topics, including Hadron Spectroscopy, Partonic Structure and Spin, Hadronization and Transverse Momentum, Spatial Structure, Mechanical Properties, Form Factors and Emergent Hadron Mass, Hadron-Quark Transition, and Nuclear Dynamics at Extreme Conditions, as well as QCD Confinement and Fundamental Symmetries. Each topic highlights the key measurements achievable at a 22 GeV CEBAF accelerator. Furthermore, this document outlines the significant physics outcomes and unique aspects of these programs that distinguish them from other existing or planned facilities. In summary, this document provides an exciting rationale for the energy upgrade of CEBAF to 22 GeV, outlining the transformative scientific potential that lies within reach, and the remarkable opportunities it offers for advancing our understanding of hadron physics and related fundamental phenomena.

Given an Equation of State (EOS) for neutron star (NS) matter, there is a unique mass-radius sequence characterized by a maximum mass $M_{\rm{NS}}^{\max}$ at radius $R_{\max}$. We first show analytically that the $M_{\rm{NS}}^{\max}$ and $R_{\max}$ scale linearly with two different combinations of NS central pressure $P_{\rm{c}}$ and energy density $\varepsilon_{\rm{c}}$ by dissecting perturbatively the dimensionless Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff (TOV) equations governing NS internal variables. The scaling relations are then verified via 87 widely used and rather diverse phenomenological as well as 17 microscopic NS EOSs with/without considering hadron-quark phase transitions and hyperons by solving numerically the original TOV equations. The EOS of densest NS matter allowed before it collapses into a black hole (BH) is then obtained. Using the universal $M_{\rm{NS}}^{\max}$ and $R_{\max}$ scalings and NICER (Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer) and XMM-Newton mass-radius observational data for PSR J0740+6620, a very narrow constraining band on the NS central EOS is extracted directly from the data for the first time without using any specific input EOS model.

The GlueX experiment at Jefferson Lab studies photoproduction of mesons using linearly polarized $8.5\,\text{GeV}$ photons im**ing on a hydrogen target which is contained within a detector with near-complete coverage for charged and neutral particles. We present measurements of spin-density matrix elements for the photoproduction of the vector meson $ρ$(770). The statistical precision achieved exceeds that of previous experiments for polarized photoproduction in this energy range by orders of magnitude. We confirm a high degree of $s$-channel helicity conservation at small squared four-momentum transfer $t$ and are able to extract the $t$-dependence of natural and unnatural-parity exchange contributions to the production process in detail. We confirm the dominance of natural-parity exchange over the full $t$ range. We also find that helicity amplitudes in which the helicity of the incident photon and the photoproduced $ρ(770)$ differ by two units are negligible for $-t<0.5\,\text{GeV}^{2}/c^{2}$.

We report the first measurements of cumulants, up to $4^{th}$ order, of deuteron number distributions and proton-deuteron correlations in Au+Au collisions recorded by the STAR experiment in phase-I of Beam Energy Scan (BES) program at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. Deuteron cumulants, their ratios, and proton-deuteron mixed cumulants are presented for different collision centralities covering a range of center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$~=~7.7 to 200~GeV. It is found that the cumulant ratios at lower collision energies favor a canonical ensemble over a grand canonical ensemble in thermal models. An anti-correlation between proton and deuteron multiplicity is observed across all collision energies and centralities, consistent with the expectation from global baryon number conservation. The UrQMD model coupled with a phase-space coalescence mechanism qualitatively reproduces the collision-energy dependence of cumulant ratios and proton-deuteron correlations.

Global polarizations ($P$) of $Λ$ ($\barΛ$) hyperons have been observed in non-central heavy-ion collisions. The strong magnetic field primarily created by the spectator protons in such collisions would split the $Λ$ and $\barΛ$ global polarizations ($ΔP = P_Λ - P_{\barΛ} < 0$). Additionally, quantum chromodynamics (QCD) predicts topological charge fluctuations in vacuum, resulting in a chirality imbalance or parity violation in a local domain. This would give rise to an imbalance ($Δn = \frac{N_{\text{L}} - N_{\text{R}}}{\langle N_{\text{L}} + N_{\text{R}} \rangle} \neq 0$) between left- and right-handed $Λ$ ($\barΛ$) as well as a charge separation along the magnetic field, referred to as the chiral magnetic effect (CME). This charge separation can be characterized by the parity-even azimuthal correlator ($Δγ$) and parity-odd azimuthal harmonic observable ($Δa_{1}$). Measurements of $ΔP$, $Δγ$, and $Δa_{1}$ have not led to definitive conclusions concerning the CME or the magnetic field, and $Δn$ has not been measured previously. Correlations among these observables may reveal new insights. This paper reports measurements of correlation between $Δn$ and $Δa_{1}$, which is sensitive to chirality fluctuations, and correlation between $ΔP$ and $Δγ$ sensitive to magnetic field in Au+Au collisions at 27 GeV. For both measurements, no correlations have been observed beyond statistical fluctuations.

We report the total and differential cross sections for $J/ψ$ photoproduction with the large acceptance GlueX spectrometer for photon beam energies from the threshold at 8.2~GeV up to 11.44~GeV and over the full kinematic range of momentum transfer squared, $t$. Such coverage facilitates the extrapolation of the differential cross sections to the forward ($t = 0$) point beyond the physical region. The forward cross section is used by many theoretical models and plays an important role in understanding $J/ψ$ photoproduction and its relation to the $J/ψ-$proton interaction. These measurements of $J/ψ$ photoproduction near threshold are also crucial inputs to theoretical models that are used to study important aspects of the gluon structure of the proton, such as the gluon Generalized Parton Distribution (GPD) of the proton, the mass radius of the proton, and the trace anomaly contribution to the proton mass. We observe possible structures in the total cross section energy dependence and find evidence for contributions beyond gluon exchange in the differential cross section close to threshold, both of which are consistent with contributions from open-charm intermediate states.

The deconfined quark-gluon plasma (QGP) created in relativistic heavy-ion collisions enables the exploration of the fundamental properties of matter under extreme conditions. Non-central collisions can produce strong magnetic fields on the order of $10^{18}$ Gauss, which offers a probe into the electrical conductivity of the QGP. In particular, quarks and anti-quarks carry opposite charges and receive contrary electromagnetic forces that alter their momenta. This phenomenon can be manifested in the collective motion of final-state particles, specifically in the rapidity-odd directed flow, denoted as $v_1(\mathsf{y})$. Here we present the charge-dependent measurements of $dv_1/d\mathsf{y}$ near midrapidities for $π^{\pm}$, $K^{\pm}$, and $p(\bar{p})$ in Au+Au and isobar ($_{44}^{96}$Ru+$_{44}^{96}$Ru and $_{40}^{96}$Zr+$_{40}^{96}$Zr) collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=$ 200 GeV, and in Au+Au collisions at 27 GeV, recorded by the STAR detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The combined dependence of the $v_1$ signal on collision system, particle species, and collision centrality can be qualitatively and semi-quantitatively understood as several effects on constituent quarks. While the results in central events can be explained by the $u$ and $d$ quarks transported from initial-state nuclei, those in peripheral events reveal the impacts of the electromagnetic field on the QGP. Our data put valuable constraints on the electrical conductivity of the QGP in theoretical calculations.

The polarization of $Λ$ and $\barΛ$ hyperons along the beam direction has been measured relative to the second and third harmonic event planes in isobar Ru+Ru and Zr+Zr collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV. This is the first experimental evidence of the hyperon polarization by the triangular flow originating from the initial density fluctuations. The amplitudes of the sine modulation for the second and third harmonic results are comparable in magnitude, increase from central to peripheral collisions, and show a mild $p_T$ dependence. The azimuthal angle dependence of the polarization follows the vorticity pattern expected due to elliptic and triangular anisotropic flow, and qualitatively disagree with most hydrodynamic model calculations based on thermal vorticity and shear induced contributions. The model results based on one of existing implementations of the shear contribution lead to a correct azimuthal angle dependence, but predict centrality and $p_T$ dependence that still disagree with experimental measurements. Thus, our results provide stringent constraints on the thermal vorticity and shear-induced contributions to hyperon polarization. Comparison to previous measurements at RHIC and the LHC for the second-order harmonic results shows little dependence on the collision system size and collision energy.

We report a new measurement of the production of electrons from open heavy-flavor hadron decays (HFEs) at mid-rapidity ($|y|<$ 0.7) in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=200$ GeV. Invariant yields of HFEs are measured for the transverse momentum range of $3.5 < p_{\rm T} < 9$ GeV/$c$ in various configurations of the collision geometry. The HFE yields in head-on Au+Au collisions are suppressed by approximately a factor of 2 compared to that in $p$+$p$ collisions scaled by the average number of binary collisions, indicating strong interactions between heavy quarks and the hot and dense medium created in heavy-ion collisions. Comparison of these results with models provides additional tests of theoretical calculations of heavy quark energy loss in the quark-gluon plasma.

We report on new measurements of elliptic flow ($v_2$) of electrons from heavy-flavor hadron decays at mid-rapidity ($|y|<0.8$) in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{\rm NN}}}$ = 27 and 54.4 GeV from the STAR experiment. Heavy-flavor decay electrons ($e^{\rm HF}$) in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{\rm NN}}}$ = 54.4 GeV exhibit a non-zero $v_2$ in the transverse momentum ($p_{\rm T}$) region of $p_{\rm T}<$ 2 GeV/$c$ with the magnitude comparable to that at $\sqrt{s_{_{\rm NN}}}=200$ GeV. The measured $e^{\rm HF}$ $v_2$ at 54.4 GeV is also consistent with the expectation of their parent charm hadron $v_2$ following number-of-constituent-quark scaling as other light and strange flavor hadrons at this energy. These suggest that charm quarks gain significant collectivity through the evolution of the QCD medium and may reach local thermal equilibrium in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{\rm NN}}}=54.4$ GeV. The measured $e^{\rm HF}$ $v_2$ in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{\rm NN}}}=$ 27 GeV is consistent with zero within large uncertainties. The energy dependence of $v_2$ for different flavor particles ($π,φ,D^{0}/e^{\rm HF}$) shows an indication of quark mass hierarchy in reaching thermalization in high-energy nuclear collisions.

For radiological safety reasons, general Co or Au neutron flux monitors cannot be easily used. We have experimentally demonstrated the feasibility of measuring the X-rays emitted by the NTD-Ge itself to determine the absolute thermal neutron fluence for the first time. A Micro-Megas Detector (MMD) and a Silicon Drift Detector (SDD) are set up to detect the tagging KX-rays with 9.2 keV and 10.3 keV cascading from the decays of $^{71}$Ge. Combined the detection efficiencies calculated by GEANT4, neutron fluence results given with proper accuracy by MMD and SDD are in a good agreement with each other.

The origin of calcium production in the first stars (Pop III stars), which formed out of the primordial matter of the Big Bang, and their fates, remain most fascinating mysteries in astrophysics. Advanced nuclear burning and supernovae were thought to be the dominant source of the Ca production seen in all stars. Here we report on a qualitatively different path to Ca production through break-out from the "warm" carbon-nitrogen-oxygen (CNO) cycle. We extend direct measurement of the $^{19}$F($p$, $γ$)$^{20}$Ne break-out reaction down to an unprecedentedly low energy point of 186 keV and discover a key resonance at 225 keV. In the domain of astrophysical interest, at around 0.1 giga kelvin, this thermonuclear $^{19}$F($p$,$γ$)$^{20}$Ne rate is up to a factor of 7.4 larger than the previous recommended rate. Our stellar models show a stronger break-out during stellar hydrogen burning than thought before, and may reveal the nature of Ca production in Pop III stars imprinted on the oldest known ultra-iron poor star, SMSS0313-6708. This result from the China **** Underground Laboratory, the deepest laboratory in the world, offering an environment with extremely low cosmic-ray induced background, has far-reaching implications on our understanding of how the first stars evolve and die. Our rate showcases the impact that faint Pop III star supernovae can have on the nucleosynthesis observed in the oldest known stars and first galaxies, key mission targets of the James Webb Space Telescope.

Density fluctuations near the QCD critical point can be probed via an intermittency analysis in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. We report the first measurement of intermittency in Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{_{NN}}}$ = 7.7-200 GeV measured by the STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The scaled factorial moments of identified charged hadrons are analyzed at mid-rapidity and within the transverse momentum phase space. We observe a power-law behavior of scaled factorial moments in Au$+$Au collisions and a decrease in the extracted scaling exponent ($ν$) from peripheral to central collisions. The $ν$ is consistent with a constant for different collisions energies in the mid-central (10-40\%) collisions. Moreover, the $ν$ in the 0-5\% most central Au$+$Au collisions exhibits a non-monotonic energy dependence that reaches a possible minimum around $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{_{NN}}}$ = 27 GeV. The physics implications on the QCD phase structure are discussed.

Aiming at evaluating the lifetime of the neutron, we introduce a novel statistical method to analyse the updated compilation of precise measurements including the 2022 dataset of Particle Data Group (PDG). Based on the minimization for the information loss principle, unlike the median statistics method, we apply the most frequent value (MFV) procedure to estimate the neutron lifetime, irrespective of the Gaussian or non-Gaussian distributions. Providing a more robust way, the calculated result of the MFV is $τ_n=881.16^{+2.25}_{-2.35}$ s with statistical bootstrap errors, while the result of median statistics is $τ_n=881.5^{+5.5}_{-3}$ s according to the binomial distribution. Using the different central estimates, we also construct the error distributions of neutron lifetime measurements and find the non-Gaussianity, which is still meaningful.

We observe that these hypernuclei exhibit significant directed flow. Comparing to that of light nuclei, it is found that the midrapidity $v_1$ slopes of $^3_Λ$H and $^4_Λ$H follow baryon number scaling, implying that the coalescence is the dominant mechanism for these hypernuclei production in such collisions.

The linear and mode-coupled contributions to higher-order anisotropic flow are presented for Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}$ = 27, 39, 54.4, and 200 GeV and compared to similar measurements for Pb+Pb collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The coefficients and the flow harmonics' correlations, which characterize the linear and mode-coupled response to the lower-order anisotropies, indicate a beam energy dependence consistent with an influence from the specific shear viscosity ($η/s$). In contrast, the dimensionless coefficients, mode-coupled response coefficients, and normalized symmetric cumulants are approximately beam-energy independent, consistent with a significant role from initial-state effects. These measurements could provide unique supplemental constraints to (i) distinguish between different initial-state models and (ii) delineate the temperature ($T$) and baryon chemical potential ($μ_{B}$) dependence of the specific shear viscosity $\fracη{s} (T, μ_B)$.

These results also provide stringent constraints for the hydrodynamic modeling of these systems.

The physics potential of detecting $^8$B solar neutrinos will be exploited at the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), in a model independent manner by using three distinct channels of the charged-current (CC), neutral-current (NC) and elastic scattering (ES) interactions. Due to the largest-ever mass of $^{13}$C nuclei in the liquid-scintillator detectors and the {expected} low background level, $^8$B solar neutrinos would be observable in the CC and NC interactions on $^{13}$C for the first time. By virtue of optimized event selections and muon veto strategies, backgrounds from the accidental coincidence, muon-induced isotopes, and external backgrounds can be greatly suppressed. Excellent signal-to-background ratios can be achieved in the CC, NC and ES channels to guarantee the $^8$B solar neutrino observation. From the sensitivity studies performed in this work, we show that JUNO, with ten years of data, can reach the {1$σ$} precision levels of 5%, 8% and 20% for the $^8$B neutrino flux, $\sin^2θ_{12}$, and $Δm^2_{21}$, respectively. It would be unique and helpful to probe the details of both solar physics and neutrino physics. In addition, when combined with SNO, the world-best precision of 3% is expected for the $^8$B neutrino flux measurement.
