The $^{21}$Al nucleus decays by one-proton (1p) emission, and its in-flight decays were detected by tracking trajectories of all decay products with micro-strip silicon detectors. The 1p-emission processes were studied by analyses of the measured angular correlations of decay products $^{20}$Mg+p. The 1p-decay energies of ground and low-lying excited states of $^{21}$Al, its mass excess and proton separation energy value $S_p$=$-1.1(1)$ MeV were determined.

We report the charge-changing cross sections ($σ_{\text{cc}}$) of 24 $p$-shell nuclides on both hydrogen and carbon at about 900$A$ MeV, of which $^{8,9}$Li, $^{10\textendash12}$Be, $^{10,14,15}$B, $^{14,15,17\textendash22}$N and $^{16}$O on hydrogen and $^{8,9}$Li on carbon are for the first time. Benefiting from the data set,we found a new and robust relationship between the scaling factor of the Glauber model calculations and the separation energies of the nuclei of interest on both targets. This allows us to deduce proton radii ($R_p$) for the first time from the cross sections on hydrogen. Nearly identical $R_p$ values are deduced from both target data for the neutron-rich carbon isotopes, however, the $R_p$ from the hydrogen target is systematically smaller in the neutron-rich nitrogen isotopes. This calls for further experimental and theoretical investigations.

Imprints of the shell closures at $N$ = 14 and 16 are reflected in local minima of their proton radii that provide evidence for the tensor interaction causing them. The radii agree with it ab initio calculations employing the chiral NNLO$_{\mathrm{sat}}$ interaction, though skin thickness predictions are challenged. Shell model predictions agree well with the data.

The value agrees with that of PREX2. Reaction cross sections $σ_{\rm R}$ are available for p+$^{48}$Ca scattering, whereas interaction cross sections $σ_{\rm I}$ are available for $^{48}$Ca + $^{12}$C scattering. As for $^{48}$Ca, the high-resolution $E1$ polarizability experiment ($E1$pE) yields $r_{\rm skin}^{48}(E1{\rm pE}) =0.14 \sim 0.20~{\rm fm}$. We determine $r_{\rm skin}^{48}({\rm exp})$ from the data on $σ_{\rm R}$ for p+$^{48}$Ca scattering and from the data on $σ_{\rm I}$ for $^{48}$Ca+$^{12}$C scattering. We use the Kyushu $g$-matrix folding model with the densities calculated with the D1M-GHFB+AMP densities. The D1M-GHFB+AMP proton and neutron densities are scaled so as to reproduce the data under the condition that the radius $r_{\rm p}$ of the scaled proton density equals the data $r_{\rm p}({\rm exp})$ determined from the electron scattering. We deduce skin values $r_{\rm skin}=r_{\rm n}({\rm exp})-r_{\rm p}({\rm exp})$ from the resulting $r_{\rm n}({\rm exp})$ and the $r_{\rm p}({\rm exp})$ determined from electron scattering. The same procedure is taken for D1S-GHFB+AMP. We regard $r_{\rm skin}^{48}(E1{\rm pE})$ as a reference skin value. Using the reference skin value and taking D1M-GHFB+AMP, we determine $r_{\rm skin}^{48}({\rm exp})=0.158 \pm 0.025$~fm for p+$^{48}$Ca scattering and $0.160 \pm 0.058$~fm for $^{48}$Ca + $^{12}$C scattering. We take the weighted mean and its error for the two skin values. The result is $r_{\rm skin}^{48}({\rm exp})=0.158 \pm (0.023)_{\rm exp} \pm (0.012)_{\rm th}~{\rm fm}$.

Charge-changing cross sections $σ_\mathrm{CC}$ for $^{42\textrm{--}51}$Ca on a carbon target at around 280~MeV/nucleon have been measured. The measured $σ_\mathrm{CC}$ values differ significantly from the previously developed calculations based on the Glauber model. However, through introduction of the charged-particle evaporation effect induced by the neutron-removal reaction in addition to the Glauber-model calculation, experimental $σ_\mathrm{CC}$ values on $^{12}$C at around 300~MeV/nucleon for nuclides from C to Fe isotopes are all reproduced with approximately 1\% accuracy. This proposed model systematically reproduces $σ_\mathrm{CC}$ data without phenomenological corrections, and can also explain experimental $σ_\mathrm{CC}$ values obtained in other energy regions.

The fragment separator FRS has been for the first time used to measure the (n,p) and (p,n)-type isobaric charge-exchange cross sections of stable 112,124Sn isotopes accelerated at 1A GeV with an uncertainty of 3% and to separate quasi-elastic and inelastic components in the missing-energy spectra of the ejectiles. The inelastic contribution can be associated to the excitation of isobar Δ(1232) resonances and to the pion emission in s-wave, both in the target and projectile nuclei, while the quasi-elastic contribution is associated to the nuclear spin-isospin response of nucleon-hole excitations. The data lead to interesting results where we observe a clear quenching of the quasi-elastic component and their comparisons to theoretical calculations demonstrate that the baryonic resonances can be excited in the target and projectile nuclei. To go further in this investigation, we propose to study the excitation of baryonic resonances taking advantage of the combination of high-resolving power magnetic spectrometers with the WASA calorimeter. These new measurements will allow us to determine the momenta of the ejectiles and pions emitted in coincidence after the single isobaric charge-exchange collisions, providing us unique opportunities to study the evolution of the baryonic resonance dynamics with the neutron-proton asymmetry through the use of exotic radioactive ion beams.

The hydrogen-filled ionization chamber IKAR served simultaneously as a gas target and a detector for the recoil protons. The projectile scattering angles were measured with multi-wire tracking detectors. The radial nuclear matter density distributions and the root-mean-square nuclear matter radii were deduced from the measured cross sections using the Glauber multiple-scattering theory. A possible neutron halo structure in $^{15}$C, $^{16}$C and $^{17}$C is discussed. The obtained data show evidence for a halo structure in the $^{15}$C nucleus.

As for p+$^{58}$Ni scattering, $σ_{\rm R}({\rm EXP})$ are available as a function of incident energy $E_{\rm in}$.
Aim: Our aim is to determine matter radius $r_{m}$ and skin $r_{\rm skin}$ for $^{58}$Ni from the $σ_{\rm R}({\rm EXP})$ of p+$^{58}$Ni scattering by using the Kyushu $g$-matrix folding model with the GHFB+AMP densities.
Results: For p+$^{58}$Ni scattering, the Kyushu $g$-matrix folding model with the GHFB+AMP densities reproduces $σ_{\rm R}({\rm EXP})$ in $8.8 \leq E_{\rm in} \leq 81$MeV. For $E_{\rm in}=81$MeV, we define the factor $F$ as $F=σ_{\rm R}({\rm EXP})/σ_{\rm R}({\rm AMP})=0.9775$. The $Fσ_{\rm R}({\rm AMP})$ be much the same as the center values of $σ_{\rm R}({\rm EXP})$ in $8.8 \leq E_{\rm in} \leq 81$MeV. We then determine $r_{\rm m}({\rm EXP})$ from the center values of $σ_{\rm R}({\rm EXP})$, using $σ_{\rm R}({\rm EXP})=C r_{m}^{2}({\rm EXP})$ with $C=r_{m}^{2}({\rm AMP})/ (Fσ_{\rm R}({\rm AMP}))$. The $r_{m}({\rm EXP})$ thus obtained are averaged over $E_{\rm in}$. The averaged value is $r_{m}({\rm EXP})=3.697$fm. Eventually, we obtain $r_{\rm skin}({\rm EXP})=0.023$fm from $r_{\rm m}=3.697$fm and $r_p({\rm EXP})=3.685$fm of electron scattering.

The folding model with GHFB+AMP densities reproduces $σ_{\rm R}$ in $23 \leq E_{\rm in} \leq 25.3$ MeV in one-$σ$ level, but slightly overestimates the central values of $σ_{\rm R}$ there. In $23 \leq E_{\rm in} \leq 25.3$MeV, the small deviation allows us to scale the GHFB+AMP densities to the central values of $r_p({\rm EXP})$ and $r_n(E1{\rm pE})$. The $σ_{\rm R}(E1{\rm pE})$ obtained with the scaled densities almost reproduce the central values of $σ_{\rm R}$ when $E_{\rm in}=23-25.3$MeV, so that the $σ_{\rm R}({\rm GHFB+AMP})$ and the $σ_{\rm R}(E1{\rm pE})$ are in 1-$σ$ of $σ_{\rm R}$ there. The chiral (Kyushu) $g$-matrix folding model for $^{12}$C scattering on $^{9}$Be, $^{12}$C, $^{27}$Al targets was tested in the incident energy range of $30 \lsim E_{\rm in} \lsim 400 $ MeV, and it is found that the model reliably reproduces the $σ_R$ in $30 \lsim E_{\rm in} \lsim 100 $ MeV and $250 \lsim E_{\rm in} \lsim 400$ MeV. \item[Aim]
We determine $R_n$ and the neutron skin thickness $R_{\rm skin}$ of ${}^{208}{\rm Pb}$ by using high-quality $σ_R$ data for the $p+{}^{208}{\rm Pb}$ scattering in $30 \leq E_{\rm in} \leq 100$ MeV.
The theoretical model is the Kyushu $g$-matrix folding model with the densities calculated with Gongny-D1S HFB (GHFB) with the angular momentum projection (AMP). \item[Results]
The Kyushu $g$-matrix folding model with the GHFB+AMP densities underestimates $σ_{\rm R}$ in $30 \leq E_{\rm in} \leq 100$~MeV only by a factor of 0.97.
Since the proton radius $R_p$ calculated with GHFB+AMP agrees with the precise experimental data of 5.444 fm, the small deviation of the theoretical result from the data on $σ_R$ allows us to scale the GHFB+AMP neutron density so as to reproduce the $σ_R$ data.
In $E_{\rm in}$ = 30--100 MeV, the experimental $σ_R$ data can be reproduced by assuming the neutron radius of ${}^{208}{\rm Pb}$ as $R_n$ = $5.722 \pm 0.035$ fm. \item[Conclusion]
The present result $R_{\rm skin}$ = $0.278 \pm 0.035$ fm is in good agreement with the recent PREX-II result of $r_{\rm skin}$ = $0.283\pm 0.071$ fm.

In the previous paper, we predicted reaction cross sections $σ_{\rm R}$ for $^{40-60,62,64}$Ca+$^{12}$C scattering at $280$~MeV/nucleon, since Tanaka {\it el al.} measured interaction cross sections $σ_{\rm I}$ for $^{42-51}$Ca in RIKEN and determined neutron skin $r_{\rm skin}({\rm RIKEN})$ using the optical limit of the Glauber model with the Woos-Saxon densities. Our purpose is to reanalyze the $r_{\rm skin}$ from the $σ_{\rm I}$. Our analysis is superior to theirs, since the chiral $g$-matrix folding model (the GHFB and GHFB+AMP densities) is much better than the optical limit of the Glauber model (the Woos-Saxon densities). Our model is the chiral $g$-matrix folding model with the densities scaled from the GHFB and GHFB+AMP densities. We scale the GHFB and GHFB+AMP densities so that the $σ_{\rm R}$ of the scaled densities can agree with the central values of $σ_{\rm I}$ under the condition that the proton radius of the scaled proton density equals the data determined from the isotope shift based on the electron scattering. The $r_{\rm skin}$ thus determined are close to their results $r_{\rm skin}^{42-51}({\rm RIKEN})$. For $^{48}$Ca, our value $r_{\rm skin}^{48}$ is 0.105 $\pm$ 0.06~fm, while their value is $r_{\rm m}^{48}({\rm RIKEN})=0.146 \pm 0.06$~fm. We take the weighted mean and its error of $r_{\rm skin}^{48}(σ_{\rm I})= 0.105 \pm 0.06$~fm and $r_{\rm skin}^{48}(E1{\rm pE}) =0.17 \pm 0.03$~fm of the high-resolution $E1$ polarizability experiment (E1{\rm pE}). Our final result is $r_{\rm skin}^{48}=0.157 \pm 0.027$~fm. Our conclusion is $r_{\rm skin}^{48}=0.157 \pm 0.027$~fm for $^{48}$Ca. For $^{42-47,49-51}$Ca, our results on $r_{\rm skin}$ are similar to theirs. Our result for $^{48}$Ca is related to CREX.

The high-resolving power of this spectrometer makes it possible to obtain the isobaric charge-exchange cross sections with an accuracy of 3% and to separate quasi-elastic and inelastic contributions in the missing-energy spectra, in which the inelastic component is associated to the in-medium excitation of baryonic resonances such as the $Δ$ resonance. We report on the results obtained for the (p,n) and (n,p) channels excited by using different targets that cover a large range in neutron excess.

[Background]: In our previous paper, we predicted $r_{\rm skin}$, $r_{\rm p}$, $r_{\rm n}$, $r_{\rm m}$ for $^{40-60,62,64}$Ca after determining the neutron dripline, using the Gogny-D1S HFB with and without the angular momentum projection (AMP). We found that effects of the AMP are small. Very lately, Tanaka {\it et al.} measured interaction cross sections $σ_{\rm I}$ for $^{42-51}$Ca, determined $r_{\rm m}$ from the $σ_{\rm I}$, and deduced skin $r_{\rm skin}$ and $r_{\rm n}$ from the $r_{\rm m}$ and the $r_{\rm p}(\rm {exp})$ evaluated from the electron scattering. Comparing our results with the data, we find for $^{42-48}$Ca that GHFB and GHFB+AMP reproduce the data on $r_{\rm skin}$, $r_{\rm n}$, $r_{\rm m}$, but not for $r_{\rm p}(\rm {exp})$. [Aim]: Our purpose is to determine a value of $r_{\rm skin}^{48}$ by using GHFB+AMP and the constrained GHFB (cGHFB) in which the calculated value is fitted to $r_{\rm p}(\rm {exp})$. [Results]: For $^{42,44,46,48}$Ca, cGHFB hardly changes $r_{\rm skin}$, $r_{\rm m}$, $r_{\rm n}$ calculated with GHFB+AMP, except for $r_{\rm skin}^{48}$. For $r_{\rm skin}^{48}$, the cGHFB result is $r_{\rm skin}^{48}=0.190$fm, while $r_{\rm skin}^{48}=0.159$fm for GHFB+AMP. We should take the upper and the lower bound of GHFB+AMP and cGHFB. The result $r_{\rm skin}^{48}=0.159-0.190$fm consists with the $r_{\rm skin}^{48}(σ_{\rm I})$ and the data $r_{\rm skin}^{48}(\rm $E1$pE)$ obtained from high-resolution $E1$ polarizability experiment ($E1$pE). Using the $r_{\rm skin}^{48}$-$r_{\rm skin}^{208}$ relation with strong correlation of Ref.[3], we transform the data $r_{\rm skin}^{208}$ determined by PREX and $E1$pE to the corresponding values, $r_{\rm skin}^{48}(\rm tPREX)$ and $r_{\rm skin}^{48}(\rm t$E1$pE)$. Our result is consistent also for $r_{\rm skin}^{48}(\rm tPREX)$ and $r_{\rm skin}^{48}(\rm t$E1$pE)$.

Isobaric single charge-exchange reactions, changing nuclear charges by one unit but leaving the mass partitions unaffected, have been for the first time investigated by peripheral collisions of $^{112}$Sn ions accelerated up to 1\textit{A} GeV at the GSI facilities. The high-resolving power of the FRS spectrometer allows us to obtain $(p, n)$-type isobaric charge-exchange cross sections with an uncertainty of $3.5\%$ and to separate quasi-elastic and inelastic components in the missing-energy spectra of the ejectiles. The inelastic component is associated to the excitation of the $Δ$(1232) isobar resonance and the emission of pions in s-wave both in the target and projectile nucleus, while the quasi-elastic contribution is associated to the nuclear spin-isospin response of nucleon-hole excitations. An apparent shift of the $Δ$-resonance peak of $\sim$63 MeV is observed when comparing the missing-energy spectra obtained from the measurements with proton and carbon targets. A detailed analysis, performed with a theoretical model for the reactions, indicates that this observation can be simply interpreted as a change in the relative magnitude between the contribution of the excitation of the resonance in the target and in the projectile.

We first predict the ground-state properties of Ca isotopes, using the Gogny-D1S Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (GHFB) with and without the angular momentum projection (AMP). We find that $^{64}$Ca is an even-dripline nucleus and $^{59}$Ca is an odd-dripline nucleus, using $A$ dependence of the one-neutron separation energy $S_{1}$ and the two-neutron separation energy, $S_{2}$. As for $S_{1}$, $S_{2}$ and the binding energies $E_{\rm B}$, our results agree with the experimental data in $^{40-58}$Ca. As other ground-state properties of $^{40-60,62,64}$Ca, we predict charge, proton, neutron, matter radii, neutron skin and deformation. As for charge radii, our results are consistent with the experimental data in $^{40-52}$Ca. For $^{48}$Ca, our results on proton, neutron, matter radii agree with the experimental data. Very lately, Tanaka et. al. measured interaction cross sections for $^{42-51}$Ca scattering on a $^{12}$C target at an incident energy per nucleon of $E_{\rm lab}=280$MeV. Secondly, we predict reaction cross sections $σ_{\rm R}$ for $^{40-60,62,64}$Ca, using a chiral $g$-matrix double-folding model (DFM). To show the reliability of the present DFM for $σ_{\rm R}$, we apply the DFM for the data on $^{12}$C scattering on $^{9}$Be, $^{12}$C, $^{27}$Al targets in $30 < E_{\rm lab} < 400 $MeV, and show that the present DFM is good in $30 < E_{\rm lab} < 100 $MeV and $250 < E_{\rm lab} < 400 $MeV. For $110 < E_{\rm lab} < 240 $MeV, our results have small errors. To improve the present DFM for $σ_{\rm R}$, we propose two prescriptions.

Interaction cross sections for $^{42\textrm{-}51}$Ca on a carbon target at 280 MeV/nucleon have been measured for the first time. The neutron number dependence of derived root-mean-square matter radii shows a significant increase beyond the neutron magic number $N=28$. Furthermore, this enhancement of matter radii is much larger than that of the previously measured charge radii, indicating a novel growth in neutron skin thickness. A simple examination based on the Fermi-type distribution, and the Mean-Field calculations point out that this anomalous enhancement of the nuclear size beyond $N=28$ results from an enlargement of the core by a sudden increase in the surface diffuseness of the neutron density distribution, which implies the swelling of the bare $^{48}$Ca core in Ca isotopes beyond $N=28$.

The hydrogen-filled ionization chamber IKAR was used as an active target to detect the recoil protons. The projectile tracking and isotope identification were performed with multi-wire proportional chambers and scintillation detectors. The measured cross sections were analysed using the Glauber multiple-scattering theory. The root-mean-square (rms) nuclear matter radii $R_{\rm m} = 2.42 (4)$ fm for $^7$Be and $R_{\rm m} = 2.58 (6)$ fm for $^8$B were obtained. The radial density distribution deduced for $^8$B exhibits a proton halo structure with the rms halo radius $R_{\rm h} = 4.24 (25)$ fm. A comparison of the deduced experimental radii is displayed with existing experimental and theoretical data.

It is unbound in respect to three-proton (${3p}$) emission, and its decays have been detected in flight by measuring trajectories of all decay products using micro-strip detectors. The $3p$-emission processes have been studied by means of angular correlations $^{28}$S+3$p$ and the respective decay vertexes. The energies of the previously-unknown ground and excited states of $^{31}$K have been determined. This provides its $3p$ separation-energy value $S_{3p}$ of $-4.6(2)$ MeV. Upper half-life limits of 10 ps of the observed $^{31}$K states have been derived from distributions of the measured decay vertexes.

Mass measurements of fission and projectile fragments, produced via $^{238}$U and $^{124}$Xe primary beams, have been performed with the multiple-reflection time-of-flight mass spectrometer (MR-TOF-MS) of the FRS Ion Catcher with a mass resolving powers (FWHM) up to 410,000 and an uncertainty of $6\cdot 10^{-8}$. The nuclides were produced and separated in-flight with the fragment separator FRS at 300 to 1000 MeV/u and thermalized in a cryogenic stop** cell. The data-analysis procedure was developed to determine with highest accuracy the mass values and the corresponding uncertainties for the most challenging conditions: down to a few events in a spectrum and overlap** distributions, characterized only by a broader common peak shape. With this procedure, the resolution of low-lying isomers is increased by a factor of up to three compared to standard data analysis. The ground-state masses of 31 short-lived nuclides of 15 different elements with half-lives down to 17.9~ms and count rates as low as 11 events per nuclide were determined. This is the first direct mass measurement for seven nuclides. The excitation energies and the isomer-to-ground state ratios of six isomeric states with excitation energies down to about 280~keV were measured. For nuclides with known mass values, the average relative deviation from the literature values is $(2.9 \pm 6.2) \cdot 10^{-8}$. The measured two-neutron separation energies and their slopes near and at the N=126 and Z=82 shell closures indicate a strong element-dependent binding energy of the first neutron above the closed proton shell Z=82. The experimental results deviate strongly from the theoretical predictions, especially for N=126 and N=127.

A thick neutron skin emerges from the first determination of root mean square radii of the proton distributions for $^{17-22}$N from charge changing cross section measurements around 900$A$ MeV at GSI. Neutron halo effects are signaled for $^{22}$N from an increase in the proton and matter radii. The radii suggest an unconventional shell gap at $N$ = 14 arising from the attractive proton-neutron tensor interaction, in good agreement with shell model calculations. $Ab$ $initio$, in-medium similarity re-normalization group, calculations with a state-of-the-art chiral nucleon-nucleon and three-nucleon interaction reproduce well the data approaching the neutron drip-line isotopes but are challenged in explaining the complete isotopic trend of the radii.

Prospects of experimental studies of argon and chlorine isotopes located far beyond the proton dripline are studied by using systematics and cluster models. The deviations from the widespread systematics observed in $^{28,29}$Cl and $^{29,30}$Ar have been theoretically substantiated, and analogous deviations predicted for the lighter chlorine and argon isotopes. The limits of nuclear structure existence are predicted for Ar and Cl isotopic chains, with $^{26}$Ar and $^{25}$Cl found to be the lightest sufficiently long-living nuclear systems. By simultaneous measurements of protons and $γ$-rays following decays of such systems as well as their $β$-delayed emission, an interesting synergy effect may be achieved, which is demonstrated by the example of $^{30}$Cl and $^{31}$Ar ground state studies. Such synergy effect may be provided by the new EXPERT setup (EXotic Particle Emission and Radioactivity by Tracking), being operated inside the fragment separator and spectrometer facility at GSI, Darmstadt.

The proton-unbound argon and chlorine isotopes have been studied by measuring trajectories of their decay-in-flight products by using a tracking technique with micro-strip detectors. The proton ($1p$) and two-proton ($2p$) emission processes have been detected in the measured angular correlations "heavy-fragment"+$p$ and "heavy-fragment"+$p$+$p$, respectively. The ground states of the previously unknown isotopes $^{30}$Cl and $^{28}$Cl have been observed for the first time, providing the $1p$-separation energies $S_p$ of $-0.48(2)$ and $-1.60(8)$ MeV, respectively. The relevant systematics of $1p$ and $2p$ separations energies have been studied theoretically in the core+$p$ and core+$p$+$p$ cluster models. The first-time observed excited states of $^{31}$Ar allow to infer the $2p$-separation energy $S_{2p}$ of 6(34) keV for its ground state. The first-time observed state in $^{29}$Ar with $S_{2p} = -5.50(18)$ MeV can be identified either as a ground or an excited state according to different systematics.

The absolute differential cross section for small-angle proton elastic scattering on the proton-rich $^8$B nucleus has been measured in inverse kinematics for the first time. The experiment was performed using a secondary radioactive beam with an energy of 0.7 GeV/u at GSI, Darmstadt. The active target, namely hydrogen-filled time projection ionization chamber IKAR, was used to measure the energy, angle and vertex point of the recoil protons. The scattering angle of the projectiles was simultaneously determined by the tracking detectors. The measured differential cross section is analyzed on the basis of the Glauber multiple scattering theory using phenomenological nuclear-density distributions with two free parameters. The radial density distribution deduced for $^8$B exhibits a halo structure with the root-mean-square (rms) matter radius $R_{\rm m} = 2.58 (6)$ fm and the rms halo radius $R_{\rm h} = 4.24 (25)$ fm. The results on $^8$B are compared to those on the mirror nucleus $^8$Li investigated earlier by the same method. A comparison is also made with previous experimental results and theoretical predictions for both nuclei.

Several states of proton-unbound isotopes $^{30}$Ar and $^{29}$Cl were investigated by measuring their in-flight decay products, $^{28}$S+proton+proton and $^{28}$S+proton, respectively. A refined analysis of $^{28}$S-proton angular correlations indicates that the ground state of $^{30}$Ar is located at $2.45^{+0.05}_{-0.10}$ MeV above the two-proton emission threshold. The theoretical investigation of the $^{30}$Ar ground state decay demonstrates that its mechanism has the transition dynamics with a surprisingly strong sensitivity of the correlation patterns of the decay products to the two-proton decay energy of the $^{30}$Ar ground state and the one-proton decay energy as well as the one-proton decay width of the $^{29}$Cl ground state. The comparison of the experimental $^{28}$S-proton angular correlations with those resulting from Monte Carlo simulations of the detector response illustrates that other observed $^{30}$Ar excited states decay by sequential emission of protons via intermediate resonances in $^{29}$Cl. Based on the findings, the decay schemes of the observed states in $^{30}$Ar and $^{29}$Cl were constructed. For calibration purposes and for checking the performance of the experimental setup, decays of the previously-known states of a two-proton emitter $^{19}$Mg were remeasured. Evidences for one new excited state in $^{19}$Mg and two unknown states in $^{18}$Na were found.

The nuclear shell structure, which originates in the nearly independent motion of nucleons in an average potential, provides an important guide for our understanding of nuclear structure and the underlying nuclear forces. Its most remarkable fingerprint is the existence of the so-called `magic numbers' of protons and neutrons associated with extra stability. Although the introduction of a phenomenological spin-orbit (SO) coupling force in 1949 helped explain the nuclear magic numbers, its origins are still open questions. Here, we present experimental evidence for the smallest SO-originated magic number (subshell closure) at the proton number 6 in 13-20C obtained from systematic analysis of point-proton distribution radii, electromagnetic transition rates and atomic masses of light nuclei. Performing ab initio calculations on 14,15C, we show that the observed proton distribution radii and subshell closure can be explained by the state-of-the-art nuclear theory with chiral nucleon-nucleon and three-nucleon forces, which are rooted in the quantum chromodynamics.

A carbon target has been irradiated with a 2.5 GeV proton beam supplied by the synchrotron SIS-18 at GSI to produce $η^\prime$ meson bound states in $^{11}$C nuclei. Deuterons emitted at $0^\circ$ in the reaction have been momentum-analyzed by the fragment separator (FRS) used as a high-resolution spectrometer. No distinct structure due to the formation of $η^\prime$-mesic states is observed although a high statistical sensitivity is achieved in the experimental spectra. Upper limits on the formation cross sections of $η^\prime$-mesic states are determined, and thereby a constraint imposed on the $η^\prime$-nucleus interaction is discussed.

$Background:$ Previous measurements of $β$-delayed neutron emitters comprise around 230 nuclei, spanning from the $^{8}$He up to $^{150}$La. Apart from $^{210}$Tl, with a minuscule branching ratio of 0.007\%, no other neutron emitter is measured yet beyond $A=150$. Therefore new data are needed, particularly in the heavy mass region around N=126, in order to guide theoretical models and to understand the formation of the third r-process peak at $A\sim195$.
$Purpose:$ To measure both, $β$-decay half-lives and neutron branching ratios of several neutron-rich Au, Hg, Tl, Pb and Bi isotopes beyond $N=126$.
$Method:$ Ions of interest are produced by fragmentation of a $^{238}$U beam, selected and identified via the GSI-FRS fragment separator. A stack of segmented silicon detectors (SIMBA) is used to measure ion-implants and $β$-decays. An array of 30 $^3$He tubes embedded in a polyethylene matrix (BELEN) is used to detect neutrons with high efficiency and selectivity. A self-triggered digital system is employed to acquire data and to enable time-correlations. The latter are analyzed with an analytical model and results for the half-lives and neutron-branching ratios are derived using the binned Maximum-Likelihood method.
$Results:$ Twenty new $β$-decay half-lives are reported for $^{204-206}$Au, $^{208-211}$Hg,$^{211-216}$Tl,$^{215-218}$Pb and $^{218-220}$Bi, nine of them for the first time. Neutron emission probabilities are reported for $^{210,211}$Hg and $^{211-216}$Tl.
$Conclusions:$ The new $β$-decay half-lives are in good agreement with previous measurements in this region. The measured neutron emission probabilities are comparable or smaller than values predicted by global models like RHB+RQRPA.

In contrast to theoretical predictions on the possible existence of deeply bound $η'$ mesic states in carbon nuclei, no distinct structures were observed associated with the formation of bound states. The spectra were analyzed to set stringent constraints on the formation cross section and on the hitherto barely-known $η'$-nucleus interaction.

We have measured for the first time the charge-changing cross sections ($σ_{\text{CC}}$) of $^{12-16}$C on a $^{12}$C target at energies below $100A$ MeV. To analyze these low-energy data, we have developed a finite-range Glauber model with a global parameter set within the optical-limit approximation which is applicable to reaction cross section ($σ_{\text{R}}$) and $σ_{\text{CC}}$ measurements at incident energies from 10$A$ to $2100A$ MeV. Adopting the proton-density distribution of $^{12}$C known from the electron-scattering data, as well as the bare total nucleon-nucleon cross sections, and the real-to-imaginary-part ratios of the forward proton-proton elastic scattering amplitude available in the literatures, we determine the energy-dependent slope parameter $β_{\rm pn}$ of the proton-neutron elastic differential cross section so as to reproduce the existing $σ_{\text{R}}$ and interaction-cross-section data for $^{12}$C+$^{12}$C over a wide range of incident energies. The Glauber model thus formulated is applied to calculate the $σ_{\text{\tiny R}}$'s of $^{12}$C on a $^9$Be and $^{27}$Al targets at various incident energies. Our calculations show excellent agreement with the experimental data. Applying our model to the $σ_{\text{\tiny R}}$ and $σ_{\text{\tiny CC}}$ for the "neutron-skin" $^{16}$C nucleus, we reconfirm the importance of measurements at incident energies below $100A$ MeV. The proton root-mean-square radii of $^{12-16}$C are extracted using the measured $σ_{\text{CC}}$'s and the existing $σ_{\text{R}}$ data. The results for $^{12-14}$C are consistent with the values from the electron scatterings, demonstrating the feasibility, usefulness of the $σ_{\text{CC}}$ measurement and the present Glauber model.

Production cross sections of nitrogen isotopes from high-energy carbon isotopes on hydrogen and carbon targets have been measured for the first time for a wide range of isotopes. The fragment separator FRS at GSI was used to deliver C isotope beams. The cross sections of the production of N isotopes were determined by charge measurements of forward going fragments. The cross sections show a rapid increase with the number of neutrons in the projectile. Since the production of nitrogen is mostly due to charge exchange reactions below the proton separation energies, the present data suggests a concentration of Gamow-Teller and Fermi transition strength at low excitation energies for neutron-rich isotopes. It was also observed that the cross sections were enhanced much more strongly for neutron rich isotopes in the C-target data.

The nucleosynthesis of elements beyond iron is dominated by neutron captures in the s and r processes. However, 32 stable, proton-rich isotopes cannot be formed during those processes, because they are shielded from the s-process flow and r-process beta-decay chains. These nuclei are attributed to the p and rp process.
For all those processes, current research in nuclear astrophysics addresses the need for more precise reaction data involving radioactive isotopes. Depending on the particular reaction, direct or inverse kinematics, forward or time-reversed direction are investigated to determine or at least to constrain the desired reaction cross sections.
The Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) will offer unique, unprecedented opportunities to investigate many of the important reactions. The high yield of radioactive isotopes, even far away from the valley of stability, allows the investigation of isotopes involved in processes as exotic as the r or rp processes.

The rapid neutron nucleosynthesis process involves an enormous amount of very exotic neutron-rich nuclei, which represent a theoretical and experimental challenge. Two of the main decay properties that affect the final abundance distribution the most are half-lives and neutron branching ratios. Using fragmentation of a primary $^{238}$U beam at GSI we were able to measure such properties for several neutron-rich nuclei from $^{208}$Hg to $^{218}$Pb. This contribution provides a short update on the status of the data analysis of this experiment, together with a compilation of the latest results published in this mass region, both experimental and theoretical. The impact of the uncertainties connected with the beta-decay rates and with beta-delayed neutron emission is illustrated on the basis of $r$-process network calculations. In order to obtain a reasonable reproduction of the third $r$-process peak, it is expected that both half-lives and neutron branching ratios are substantially smaller, than those based on FRDM+QRPA, commonly used in $r$-process model calculations. Further measurements around $N\sim126$ are required for a reliable modelling of the underlying nuclear structure, and for performing more realistic $r$-process abundance calculations.

A search for isomeric gamma-decays among fission fragments from 345 MeV/nucleon 238U has been performed at the RIKEN Nishina Center RI Beam Factory. Fission fragments were selected and identified using the superconducting in-flight separator BigRIPS and were implanted in an aluminum stopper. Delayed gamma-rays were detected using three clover-type high-purity germanium detectors located at the focal plane within a time window of 20 microseconds following the implantation. We identified a total of 54 microsecond isomers with half-lives of ~0.1 - 10 microseconds, including discovery of 18 new isomers in very neutron-rich nuclei: 59Tim, 90Asm, 92Sem, 93Sem, 94Brm, 95Brm, 96Brm, 97Rbm, 108Nbm, 109Mom, 117Rum, 119Rum, 120Rhm, 122Rhm, 121Pdm, 124Pdm, 124Agm and 126Agm, and obtained a wealth of spectroscopic information such as half-lives, gamma-ray energies, gamma-ray relative intensities and gamma-gamma coincidences over a wide range of neutron-rich exotic nuclei. Proposed level schemes are presented for 59Tim, 82Gam, 92Brm, 94Brm, 95Brm, 97Rbm, 98Rbm, 108Nbm, 108Zrm, 109Mom, 117Rum, 119Rum, 120Rhm, 122Rhm, 121Pdm, 124Agm and 125Agm, based on the obtained spectroscopic information and the systematics in neighboring nuclei. Nature of the nuclear isomerism is discussed in relation to evolution of nuclear structure.

Excited states in 38,40,42Si nuclei have been studied via in-beam gamma-ray spectroscopy with multi-nucleon removal reactions. Intense radioactive beams of 40S and 44S provided at the new facility of the RIKEN Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory enabled gamma-gamma coincidence measurements. A prominent gamma line observed with an energy of 742(8) keV in 42Si confirms the 2+ state reported in an earlier study. Among the gamma lines observed in coincidence with the 2+ -> 0+ transition, the most probable candidate for the transition from the yrast 4+ state was identified, leading to a 4+_1 energy of 2173(14) keV. The energy ratio of 2.93(5) between the 2+_1 and 4+_1 states indicates well-developed deformation in 42Si at N=28 and Z=14. Also for 38,40Si energy ratios with values of 2.09(5) and 2.56(5) were obtained. Together with the ratio for 42Si, the results show a rapid deformation development of Si isotopes from N=24 to N=28.

The structure of $^{19,20,22}$C has been investigated using high-energy (about 240 MeV/nucleon) one- and two-neutron removal reactions on a carbon target. Measurements were made of the inclusive cross sections and momentum distributions for the charged residues. Narrow momentum distributions were observed for one-neutron removal from $^{19}$C and $^{20}$C and two-neutron removal from $^{22}$C. Two-neutron removal from $^{20}$C resulted in a relatively broad momentum distribution. The results are compared with eikonal-model calculations combined with shell-model structure information. The neutron-removal cross sections and associated momentum distributions are calculated for transitions to both the particle-bound and particle-unbound final states. The calculations take into account the population of the mass $A-1$ reaction residues, $^{A-1}$C, and, following one-neutron emission after one-neutron removal, the mass $A-2$ two-neutron removal residues, $^{A-2}$C. The smaller contributions of direct two-neutron removal, that populate the $^{A-2}$C residues in a single step, are also computed. The data and calculations are shown to be in good overall agreement and consistent with the predicted shell-model ground state configurations and the one-neutron overlaps with low-lying states in $^{18-21}$C. These suggest significant $ν{s}_{1/2}^2$ valence neutron configurations in both $^{20}$C and $^{22}$C. The results for $^{22}$C strongly support the picture of $^{22}$C as a two-neutron halo nucleus with a dominant $ν{s}_{1/2}^2$ ground state configuration.

We report on the first spectroscopic study of the N=22 nucleus 32Ne at the newly completed RIKEN Radioactive Ion Beam Factory. A single gamma-ray line with an energy of 722(9) keV was observed in both inelastic scattering of a 226 MeV/u 32Ne beam on a Carbon target and proton removal from 33Na at 245 MeV/u. This transition is assigned to the de-excitation of the first J^pi = 2+ state in 32Ne to the 0+ ground state. Interpreted through comparison with state-of-the-art shell model calculations, the low excitation energy demonstrates that the Island of Inversion extends to at least N=22 for the Ne isotopes.
