This strong isospin dependence at large momentum transfer is not reproduced by the distorted-wave impulse approximation calculations with known spectroscopic amplitudes. The results indicate the presence of high-momentum protons and neutrons induced by the tensor interactions in ground state of 16O.

The neutron density distributions and neutron skin thicknesses in $^{40,48}$Ca are determined from the angular distributions of the cross sections and analyzing powers of polarized proton elastic scattering at $E_p = 295$ MeV. Based on the framework of the relativistic impulse approximation with the density-dependent effective $NN$ interaction, the experimental data is successfully analyzed, providing precise information of neutron and proton density profiles of $^{40,48}$Ca with small uncertainties. The extracted neutron and proton density distributions give neutron skin thicknesses in $^{40,48}$Ca for $-0.010^{+0.022}_{-0.024}$ fm and $0.168^{+0.025}_{-0.028}$ fm, respectively. The results of the density profiles and the neutron skin thickness in $^{48}$Ca are directly compared with the {\it ab initio} coupled-cluster calculations with interactions derived from chiral effective field theory, as well as relativistic and non-relativistic energy density functional theories.

The nuclear shell structure, which originates in the nearly independent motion of nucleons in an average potential, provides an important guide for our understanding of nuclear structure and the underlying nuclear forces. Its most remarkable fingerprint is the existence of the so-called `magic numbers' of protons and neutrons associated with extra stability. Although the introduction of a phenomenological spin-orbit (SO) coupling force in 1949 helped explain the nuclear magic numbers, its origins are still open questions. Here, we present experimental evidence for the smallest SO-originated magic number (subshell closure) at the proton number 6 in 13-20C obtained from systematic analysis of point-proton distribution radii, electromagnetic transition rates and atomic masses of light nuclei. Performing ab initio calculations on 14,15C, we show that the observed proton distribution radii and subshell closure can be explained by the state-of-the-art nuclear theory with chiral nucleon-nucleon and three-nucleon forces, which are rooted in the quantum chromodynamics.

A new type of neutron detector, named Stack Structure Solid organic Scintillator (S$^4$), consisting of multi-layer plastic scintillators with capability to suppress low-energy $γ$ rays under high-counting rate has been constructed and tested. To achieve $\it{n}$-$γ$ discrimination, we exploit the difference in the ranges of the secondary charged particles produced by the interactions of neutrons and $γ$ rays in the scintillator material. The thickness of a plastic scintillator layer was determined based on the results of Monte Carlo simulations using the Geant4 toolkit. With layer thicknesses of 5 mm, we have achieved a good separation between neutrons and $γ$ rays at 5 MeV$_{\rm ee}$ threshold setting. We have also determined the detection efficiencies using monoenergetic neutrons at two energies produced by the $\it{d}$+$\it{d}\to\it{n}$+$^{3}$He reaction. The results agree well with the Geant4 simulations implementing the Li$\grave{\rm e}$ge Intranuclear Cascade hadronic model (INCL++) and the high-precision model of low-energy neutron interactions (NeutronHP).

We have measured for the first time the charge-changing cross sections ($σ_{\text{CC}}$) of $^{12-16}$C on a $^{12}$C target at energies below $100A$ MeV. To analyze these low-energy data, we have developed a finite-range Glauber model with a global parameter set within the optical-limit approximation which is applicable to reaction cross section ($σ_{\text{R}}$) and $σ_{\text{CC}}$ measurements at incident energies from 10$A$ to $2100A$ MeV. Adopting the proton-density distribution of $^{12}$C known from the electron-scattering data, as well as the bare total nucleon-nucleon cross sections, and the real-to-imaginary-part ratios of the forward proton-proton elastic scattering amplitude available in the literatures, we determine the energy-dependent slope parameter $β_{\rm pn}$ of the proton-neutron elastic differential cross section so as to reproduce the existing $σ_{\text{R}}$ and interaction-cross-section data for $^{12}$C+$^{12}$C over a wide range of incident energies. The Glauber model thus formulated is applied to calculate the $σ_{\text{\tiny R}}$'s of $^{12}$C on a $^9$Be and $^{27}$Al targets at various incident energies. Our calculations show excellent agreement with the experimental data. Applying our model to the $σ_{\text{\tiny R}}$ and $σ_{\text{\tiny CC}}$ for the "neutron-skin" $^{16}$C nucleus, we reconfirm the importance of measurements at incident energies below $100A$ MeV. The proton root-mean-square radii of $^{12-16}$C are extracted using the measured $σ_{\text{CC}}$'s and the existing $σ_{\text{R}}$ data. The results for $^{12-14}$C are consistent with the values from the electron scatterings, demonstrating the feasibility, usefulness of the $σ_{\text{CC}}$ measurement and the present Glauber model.

Combined with photoabsorption data an electric dipole polarizability α_D(120Sn) = 8.93(36) fm^3 is extracted. The dipole polarizability as isovector observable par excellence carries direct information on the nuclear symmetry energy and its density dependence. The correlation of the new value with the well established α_D(208Pb) serves as a test of its prediction by nuclear energy density functionals (EDFs). Models based on modern Skyrme interactions describe the data fairly well while most calculations based on relativistic Hamiltonians cannot.

Below neutron threshoild it differs from the results of a 120Sn(gamma,gamma') experiment and peaks at an excitation energy of 8.3 MeV. The total strength corresponds to 2.3(2)% of the energy-weighted sum rule and is more than three times larger than what is observed with the (gamma, gamma') reaction. This implies a strong fragmentation of the E1 strength and/or small ground state branching ratios of the excited 1- states.

Differential cross sections of the one-neutron transfer reactions populating the ground states and several low-lying excited states in 15O were measured. Comparing the ratios of the cross sections for each excited state to the one for the ground state over a wide range of momentum transfer, we found a marked enhancement for the positive-parity state(s). The observation indicates large components of high-momentum neutrons in the initial ground-state configurations, due possibly to the tensor interactions.

Scattering of protons of several hundred MeV is a promising new spectroscopic tool for the study of electric dipole strength in nuclei. A case study of 208Pb shows that at very forward angles J^pi = 1- states are strongly populated via Coulomb excitation. A separation from nuclear excitation of other modes is achieved by a multipole decomposition analysis of the experimental cross sections based on theoretical angular distributions calculated within the quasiparticle-phonon model. The B(E1) transition strength distribution is extracted for excitation energies up to 9 MeV, i.e., in the region of the so-called pygmy dipole resonance (PDR). The Coulomb-nuclear interference shows sensitivity to the underlying structure of the E1 transitions, which allows for the first time an experimental extraction of the electromagnetic transition strength and the energy centroid of the PDR.

We have extracted the ISGDR strength under the coincidence condition between inelastically scattered $α$ particles at forward angles and decay protons emitted at backward angles. Branching ratios for proton decay to low-lying states of $^{57}$Co have been determined, and the results compared to predictions of recent continuum-RPA calculations. The final-state spectra of protons decaying to the low-lying states in $^{57}$Co were analyzed for a more detailed understanding of the structure of the ISGDR. It is found that there are differences in the structure of the ISGDR as a function of excitation energy.

Cross sections and analyzing powers for proton elastic scattering from $^{116,118,120,122,124}$Sn at 295 MeV have been measured for a momentum transfer of up to about 3.5 fm$^{-1}$ to deduce systematic changes of the neutron density distribution. We tuned the relativistic Love-Franey interaction to explain the proton elastic scattering of a nucleus whose density distribution is well known. Then, we applied this interaction to deduce the neutron density distributions of tin isotopes. The result of our analysis shows the clear systematic behavior of a gradual increase in the neutron skin thickness of tin isotopes with mass number.

Abstract:
Inelastic $α$ scattering on 16O is studied at 400 MeV by using an ice target. Near the 4-alpha breakup threshold of 14.4 MeV, a broad peak is observed at an excitation energy of 13.6+/-0.2 MeV with a width of 0.6+/-0.2 MeV. The observed width is significantly larger than those of the neighboring 0+ states indicating a state with a well-developed alpha cluster structure. The magnitude of the cross section is sensitive to the density distribution of the constituent alpha clusters. The observed cross section is consistent with the theoretical prediction for the alpha cluster condensed state characterized by its dilute density distribution with a large root-mean-square radius of about 4.3 fm.

We have measured de-excitation gamma-rays from the s-hole state in 15N produced via the 16O(p,2p)15N reaction in relation to the study of the nucleon decay and the neutrino neutral-current interaction in water Cherenkov detectors. In the excitation-energy region of the s-hole state between 16 MeV and 40 MeV in 15N, the branching ratio of emitting gamma-rays with the energies at more-than-6 MeV are found to be 15.6+-1.3+0.6-1.0%. Taking into account the spectroscopic factor of the s-hole state, the total emission probability is found to be 3.1%. This is about 1/10 compared with the emission probability of the 6.32 MeV gamma-ray from the 3/2- p-hole state in 15N. Moreover, we searched for a 15.1 MeV gamma-ray from the 12C 1+ state which may be populated after the particle-decay of the s-hole state in 15N. Such a high energy gamma-ray from the hole state would provide a new method to search for mode-independent nucleon decay even if the emission probability is small. No significant signal is found within a statistical uncertainty.

The isovector $0^-$ state at $E_x$ = 12.8 MeV is clearly separated from its neighboring states owing to the high energy resolution of about 30 keV.
The cross section data were compared with distorted wave impulse approximation (DWIA) calculations employing shell-model wave functions.
The observed cross sections around $q_{\rm c.m.}$ $\simeq$ $1.7 {\rm fm^{-1}}$ are significantly larger than predicted by these calculations, suggesting pionic enhancement as a precursor of pion condensation in nuclei.
The data are successfully reproduced by DWIA calculations using random phase approximation response functions including the $Δ$ isobar that predict pionic enhancement.

The measured $^{11}$B($^3$He$, t$) cross sections were compared with the results of the distorted-wave impulse-approximation (DWIA) calculation, and the Gamow-Teller (GT) strengths for low-lying states in $^{11}$C were determined. The GT strengths were converted to the isovector spin-flip M1 strengths using the isobaric analog relations under the assumption of the isospin symmetry. The isoscalar spin-flip M1 strengths were obtained from the ($d, d'$) analysis by assuming that the shape of the collective transition form factor with the same $ΔJ^π$ is similar in the $^{11}$B($d, d'$) and $^{12}$C($d, d'$) reactions. The obtained isovector and isoscalar strengths were used in the DWIA calculations for the $^{11}$B($p, p'$) reaction. The DWIA calculation reasonably well explains the present $^{11}$B($p, p'$) result. However, the calculated cross section for the 8.92-MeV 3/2$^-_2$ state was significantly smaller than the experimental values. The transition strengths obtained in the shell-model calculations were found to be 20-50% larger than the experimental strengths. The transition strengths for the neutrino induced reactions were estimated by using the isovector and isoscalar spin-flip M1 strengths. The present results are quantitatively in agreement with the theoretical estimation discussing the axial isoscalar coupling in the neutrino scattering process, and are useful in the measurement of the stellar neutrinos using the neutral- and charged-current reactions on $^{11}$B.

The non-spin-flip ($ΔS=0$) and spin-flip ($ΔS=1$) strengths in transitions to several discrete states and broad resonances in $^{16}$O were extracted using a model-independent method. The giant resonances in the energy region of $E_x=19-$27 MeV were found to be predominantly excited by $ΔL=1$ transitions. The strength distribution of spin-dipole transitions with $ΔS=1$ and $ΔL=1$ were deduced. The obtained distribution was compared with a recent shell model calculation. Experimental results are reasonably explained by distorted-wave impulse approximation calculations with the shell model wave functions.
