Abstract:
We conducted measurements of $K^- + {^3{\rm He}} \to π\!Y \!N + N'$ reactions using a $1~{\rm GeV}/c$ $K^-$-beam, with the objective of understanding the broad decay width of $\bar{K} \!N \!N$ (approximately twice as broad as that of $Λ(1405)$ considered to be the $\bar{K} \!N$ quasi-bound state). We conducted measurements of $K^- + {^3{\rm He}} \to π\!Y \!N + N'$ reactions using a $1~{\rm GeV}/c$ $K^-$-beam, with the objective of understanding the broad decay width of $\bar{K} \!N \!N$ (approximately twice as broad as that of $Λ(1405)$ considered to be the $\bar{K} \!N$ quasi-bound state). We successfully reproduced distributions of the $π\! Y \! N$ invariant mass and momentum transfer for $π\! Y \! N$ using model fitting functions for $\bar{K} \!N \!N$ formation and quasi-free $\bar{K}$ absorption (${\rm QF}_{\bar{K}-{\rm abs}}$) processes. The model can describe the experimental data quite well, and four $\bar{K} \! N \! N \to π\! Y \! N $ cross-sections were obtained. The results indicate that mesonic decay is the dominant decay branch of $\bar{K} \! N \! N$. The results also suggest that $Γ_{πΛN} \sim Γ_{πΣN}$, which indicates that the $I_{\bar{K} \! N}=1$ absorption channel, in addition to the $I_{\bar{K} \! N}=0$ absorption channel, substantially contribute to the $\bar{K} \! N \! N$ decay, making the $\bar{K} \! N \! N$ state approximately twice as unstable as $Λ$(1405).

Abstract:

We present a new measurement of the $^4_Λ$H hypernuclear lifetime using in-flight $K^-$ + $^4$He $\rightarrow$ $^4_Λ$H + $π^0$ reaction at the J-PARC hadron facility. We demonstrate, for the first time, the effective selection of the hypernuclear bound state using only the $γ$-ray energy decayed from $π^0$. This opens the possibility for a systematic study of isospin partner hypernuclei through comparison with data from ($K^-$, $π^-$) reaction. As the first application of this method, our result for the $^4_Λ$H lifetime, $τ(^4_Λ\mathrm{H}) = 206 \pm 8 (\mathrm{stat.}) \pm 12 (\mathrm{syst.})\ \mathrm{ps}$, is one of the most precise measurements to date. We are also preparing to measure the lifetime of the hypertriton ($^3_Λ$H) using the same setup in the near future.

We performed a novel $Σ^+ p$ scattering experiment at the J-PARC Hadron Experimental Facility. Approximately 2400 $Σ^+ p$ elastic scattering events were identified from $4.9 \times 10^7$ tagged $Σ^+$ particles in the $Σ^+$ momentum range 0.44 -- 0.80 GeV/$c$. The differential cross sections of the $Σ^+ p$ elastic scattering were derived with much better precision than in previous experiments. The obtained differential cross sections were approximately 2 mb/sr or less, which were not as large as those predicted by the fss2 and FSS models based on the quark cluster model in the short-range region. By performing phase-shift analyses for the obtained differential cross sections, we experimentally derived the phase shifts of the $^3 S_1$ and $^1 P_1$ channels for the first time. The phase shift of the $^3 S_1$ channel, where a large repulsive core was predicted owing to the Pauli effect between quarks, was evaluated as $20^\circ<|δ_{^3S_1}|<35^\circ$. If the sign of $δ_{^3S_1}$ is assumed to be negative, the interaction in this channel is moderately repulsive, as the Nijmegen extended-sort-core models predicted.

The differential cross sections of the Σ-p --> Λ n reaction were measured accurately for the Σ- momentum (p_{Σ}) ranging from 470 to 650 MeV/c at the J-PARC Hadron Experimental Facility. Precise angular information about the Σ-p --> Λ n reaction was obtained for the first time by detecting approximately 100 reaction events at each angular step of Δcosθ = 0.1. The obtained differential cross sections show slightly forward-peaking structure in the measured momentum regions.The cross sections integrated for -0.7 < cosθ < 1.0 were obtained as 22.5 +- 0.68 (stat.) +- 0.65 (syst.) mb and 15.8 +-0.83(stat.) +- 0.52 (syst.) mb for 470<p_{Σ}(MeV/c)<550 and 550<p_{Σ}(MeV/c)<650, respectively. These results show a drastic improvement compared to past measurements of the hyperon-proton scattering experiments. They will play essential roles in updating the theoretical models of the baryon-baryon interactions.

We observed the simplest kaonic nuclei, $K^-pp$, having a much deeper binding energy than normal nuclei. For further studies, we have proposed a series of experimental programs for the systematic investigation of light kaonic nuclei, from $\bar K N$ ($Λ(1405)$) to $\bar K NNNN$. In the new experiment approved as J-PARC E80, we will measure the $\bar K NNN$ ($A=3$) system as a first step toward a comprehensive study.

A high statistics $Σp$ scattering experiment has been performed at the J-PARC Hadron Experimental Facility. Data for momentum-tagged $Σ^{-}$ running in a liquid hydrogen target were accumulated by detecting the $π^{-}p \to K^{+}Σ^{-}$ reaction with a high intensity $π^{-}$ beam of 20 M/spill. Differential cross sections of the $Σ^{-}p$ elastic scattering were derived with a drastically improved accuracy by identifying the largest statistics of about 4,500 events from 1.72 $\times$ $10^{7}$ $Σ^{-}$. The derived differential cross section shows a clear forward-peaking angular distribution for a $Σ^{-}$ momentum range from 470 to 850 MeV/$c$. The accurate data will impose a strong constraint on the theoretical models of the baryon-baryon interactions.

We have performed an exclusive measurement of the $K^{-}+\! ~^{3}{\rm He} \to Λpn$ reaction at an incident kaon momentum of $1\ {\rm GeV}/c$.In the $Λp$ invariant mass spectrum, a clear peak was observed below the mass threshold of $\bar{K}\!+\!N\!+\!N$, as a signal of the kaonic nuclear bound state, $\bar{K}NN$.The binding energy, decay width, and $S$-wave Gaussian reaction form-factor of this state were observed to be $B_{K} = 42\pm3({\rm stat.})^{+3}_{-4}({\rm syst.})\ {\rm MeV}$, $Γ_{K} = 100\pm7({\rm stat.})^{+19}_{-9}({\rm syst.})\ {\rm MeV}$, and $Q_{K} = 383\pm11({\rm stat.})^{+4}_{-1}({\rm syst.})\ {\rm MeV}/c$, respectively. The total production cross-section of $\bar{K}NN$, determined by its $Λp$ decay mode, was $σ^{tot}_{K} \cdot BR_{Λp} = 9.3\pm0.8({\rm stat.})^{+1.4}_{-1.0}({\rm syst.})\ μ{\rm b}$.We estimated the branching ratio of the $\bar{K}NN$ state to the $Λp$ and $Σ^{0}p$ decay modes as $BR_{Λp}/BR_{Σ^{0}p} \sim 1.7$, by assuming that the physical processes leading to the $ΣN\!N$ final states are analogous to those of $Λpn$.

We observed a distinct peak in the $Λp$ invariant mass spectrum of $^{3}{\rm He}(K^-, \, Λp)n$, well below the mass threshold of $m_K + 2 m_p$. By selecting a relatively large momentum-transfer region $q = 350 \sim 650$ MeV/$c$, one can clearly separate the peak from the quasi-free process, $\overline{K}N \rightarrow \overline{K}N$ followed by the non-resonant absorption by the two spectator-nucleons $\overline{K}NN \rightarrow ΛN $. We found that the simplest fit to the observed peak gives us a Breit-Wigner pole position at $B_{\rm {\it Kpp}} = 47 \pm 3 \, (stat.) \,^{+3}_{-6} \,(sys.)$ MeV having a width $Γ_{\rm {\it Kpp}} = 115 \pm 7 \, (stat.) \,^{+10}_{-9} \,(sys.)$ MeV, and the $S$-wave Gaussian reaction form-factor parameter $Q_{\rm {\it Kpp}} = 381 \pm 14 \, (stat.)\,^{+57}_{-0} \,(sys.)$ MeV/$c$, as a new form of the nuclear bound system with strangeness -- "$K^-pp$".

We report on the first observation of $γ$ rays emitted from an $sd$-shell hypernucleus, $\rm ^{19}_ΛF$. The energy spacing between the ground state doublet, $1/2^{+}$ and $3/2^{+}$ states, of $\rm ^{19}_ΛF$ is determined to be $\rm 315.5 \pm 0.4 (stat) ^{+0.6}_{-0.5} (syst)~keV$ by measuring the $γ$-ray energy from the $M1(3/2^{+} \rightarrow 1/2^{+})$ transition. In addition, three $γ$-ray peaks were observed and assigned as $E2(5/2^{+} \rightarrow 1/2^{+})$, $E1(1/2^{-} \rightarrow 1/2^{+})$, and $E1(1/2^{-} \rightarrow 3/2^{+})$ transitions. The excitation energies of the $5/2^{+}$ and $1/2^{-}$ states are determined to be $\rm 895.2 \pm 0.3 (stat) \pm 0.5 (syst)~keV$ and $\rm 1265.6 \pm 1.2 (stat) ^{+0.7}_{-0.5} (syst)~keV$, respectively. It is found that the ground state doublet spacing is well described by theoretical models based on existing $s$- and $p$-shell hypernuclear data.

We searched for the bound state of the neutron-rich $Λ$-hypernucleus ${}^{6}_Λ$H, using the ${}^{6}$Li($π^{-}, K^{+}$)X double charge-exchange reaction at a $π^{-}$ beam momentum of 1.2 GeV/c at J-PARC. A total of $1.4 \times 10^{12}$ $π^{-}$ was driven onto a ${}^{6}$Li target of 3.5-g/$\rm cm^2$ thickness. No event was observed below the bound threshold, i.e., the mass of ${}^{4}_Λ$H + 2n, in the missing-mass spectrum of the ${}^{6}$Li($π^{-}, K^{+}$)X reaction in the $2^{\circ}$ < $θ_{πK}$ < $20^{\circ}$ angular range. Furthermore, no event was found up to 2.8 MeV/$c^2$ above the bound threshold. We obtained the the double-differential cross section spectra of the ${}^{6}$Li($π^{-}, K^{+}$)X reaction in the angular range of $2^{\circ}$ < $θ_{πK}$ < $14^{\circ}$. An upper limit of 0.56 nb/sr (90% C.L.) was obtained for the production cross section of the ${}^{6}_Λ$H hypernucleus bound state. In addition, not only the bound state region, but also the $Λ$ continuum region and part of the $Σ^{-}$ quasi-free production region of the ${}^{6}$Li($π^{-}, K^{+}$)X reaction, were obtained with high statistics. The present missing-mass spectrum will facilitate the investigation of the $Σ^{-}$-nucleus optical potential for $Σ^{-}$-${}^{5}$He through spectrum shape analysis.

Furthermore, the observed interference effect does not account for the $\sqrt{s}=2.1$ GeV bump structure in forward differential cross sections for $φ$ photoproduction. This fact suggests possible exotic structures such as a hidden-strangeness pentaquark state, a new Pomeron exchange and rescattering processes via other hyperon states.

To search for an S= -1 di-baryonic state which decays to $Λp$, the $ {\rm{}^3He}(K^-,Λp)n_{missing}$ reaction was studied at 1.0 GeV/$c$. Unobserved neutrons were kinematically identified from the missing mass $M_X$ of the $ {\rm{}^3He}(K^-,Λp)X$ reaction in order to have a large acceptance for the $Λpn$ final state. The observed $Λp n$ events, distributed widely over the kinematically allowed region of the Dalitz plot, establish that the major component comes from a three nucleon absorption process. A concentration of events at a specific neutron kinetic energy was observed in a region of low momentum transfer to the $Λp$. To account for the observed peak structure, the simplest S-wave pole was assumed to exist in the reaction channel, having Breit-Wigner form in energy and with a Gaussian form-factor. A minimum $χ^2$ method was applied to deduce its mass $M_X\ =$ 2355 $ ^{+ 6}_{ - 8}$ (stat.) $ \pm 12$ (syst.) MeV/c$^2$, and decay-width $Γ_X\ = $ 110 $ ^{+ 19}_{ - 17}$ (stat.) $ \pm 27$ (syst.) MeV/c$^2$, respectively. The form factor parameter $Q_X \sim$ 400 MeV/$c$ implies that the range of interaction is about 0.5

The energy spacing between the ground-state spin doublet of $^4_Λ$He(1$^+$,0$^+$) was determined to be $1406 \pm 2 \pm 2$ keV, by measuring $γ$ rays for the $1^+ \to 0^+$ transition with a high efficiency germanium detector array in coincidence with the $^4$He$(K^-,π^-)$ $^4_Λ$He reaction at J-PARC. In comparison to the corresponding energy spacing in the mirror hypernucleus $^4_Λ$H, the present result clearly indicates the existence of charge symmetry breaking (CSB) in $ΛN$ interaction. It is also found that the CSB effect is large in the $0^+$ ground state but is by one order of magnitude smaller in the $1^+$ excited state, demonstrating that the $ΛN$ CSB interaction has spin dependence.

In this context the importance of kaonic deuterium X-ray spectroscopy has been well recognized, but no experimental results have yet been obtained due to the difficulty of the measurement. We propose to measure the shift and width of the kaonic deuterium 1s state with an accuracy of 60 eV and 140 eV respectively at J-PARC. These results together with the kaonic hydrogen data (KpX at KEK, DEAR and SIDDHARTA at DAFNE) will then permit the determination of values of both the isospin I=0 and I=1 antikaon-nucleon scattering lengths and will provide the most stringent constraints on the antikaon-nucleon interaction, promising a breakthrough. Refined Monte Carlo studies were performed, including the investigation of background suppression factors for the described setup. These studies have demonstrated the feasibility of determining the shift and width of the kaonic deuterium atom 1s state with the desired accuracy of 60 eV and 140 eV.

A broad enhancement in the proton coincidence spectra are observed around the missing-mass of 2.27 GeV/$c^2$, which corresponds to the $K^-pp$ binding energy of 95 $^{+18}_{-17}$ (stat.) $^{+30}_{-21}$ (syst.) MeV and the width of 162 $^{+87}_{-45}$ (stat.) $^{+66}_{-78}$ (syst.) MeV.

In the semi-inclusive neutron missing-mass spectrum at $θ_{n}^{lab}=0^\circ$, no significant peak was observed in the region corresponding to $K^-pp$ binding energy larger than 80 MeV, where a bump structure has been reported in the $Λp$ final state in different reactions. Assuming the state to be isotropically decaying into $Λp$, mass-dependent upper limits on the production cross section were determined to be 30--180, 70--250, and 100--270 $μ$b/sr, for the natural widths of 20, 60, and 100 MeV, respectively, at 95\% confidence level.

We have measured an inclusive missing-mass spectrum of the $d(π^+, K^+)$ reaction at the pion incident momentum of 1.69 GeV/$c$ at the laboratory scattering angles between 2$^\circ$ and 16$^\circ$ with the missing-mass resolution of 2.7 $\pm$ 0.1 MeV/$c^2$ (FWHM) at the missing mass of 2.27 GeV/$c^{2}$. In this Letter, we first try to understand the spectrum as a simple quasi-free picture based on several known elementary cross sections, considering the neutron/proton Fermi motion in deuteron. While gross spectrum structures are well understood in this picture, we have observed two distinct deviations; one peculiar enhancement at 2.13 GeV/$c^2$ is due to the $ΣN$ cusp, and the other notable feature is a shift of a broad bump structure, mainly originating from hyperon resonance productions of $Λ(1405)$ and $Σ(1385)^{+/0}$, by about 22.4 $\pm$ 0.4 (stat.) $^{+2.7}_{-1.7}$ (syst.) MeV/$c^2$ toward the low-mass side, which is calculated in the kinematics of a proton at rest as the target.

The systematic uncertainty of the upper limits was controlled within 10\%. Constraints on the $Θ^+$ decay width were also evaluated with a theoretical calculation using effective Lagrangian. The present result implies that the width should be less than 0.36 and 1.9 MeV for the spin-parity of $1/2^+$ and $1/2^-$, respectively.

A novel experiment, aiming at demonstrating the feasibility of hypernuclear spectroscopy with heavy-ion beams, was conducted. Using the invariant mass method, the spectroscopy of hypernuclear products of 6Li projectiles on a carbon target at 2 AGeV was performed. Signals of the Λ-hyperon and 3ΛH and 4ΛH hypernuclei were observed for final states of p+π^-, 3He+π^- and 4He+π^-, respectively, with significance values of 6.7, 4.7 and 4.9σ. By analyzing the proper decay time from secondary vertex distribution with the unbinned maximum likelihood fitting method, their lifetime values were deduced to be $262 ^{+56}_{-43} \pm 45$ ps for Λ, $183 ^{+42}_{-32} \pm 37$ ps for 3ΛH, and $140 ^{+48}_{-33}\pm 35 $ ps for 4ΛH.

Here we report a result of the search for the $X$ by using the $K^+ + N \rightarrow X^+ + N$ reaction at P$_K\sim$ 1.2 GeV/c. The $X^+ \rightarrow K^+ γγ$ decay produces $K^+$ in momentum region where other processes cannot fill. We observed signature of the $X^+$ with statistical significance of 2 $σ$. Production cross section of $X$ with respect to that of $π^0$ is 1$\pm$0.5% if we take it as an evidence and 1.5% if we set an upper limit.

A linearly polarized photon beam at $E_γ$=1.6-2.4 GeV was used for the production of $φ$ mesons. The natural-parity Pomeron exchange processes remains dominant nearthreshold. There is no strong $E_γ$-dependence, but some dependence on momentum-transfer. Photoproduction of $Λ$(1520) with liquid hydrogen and deuterium targets was examined at photon energies below 2.4 GeV in the SPring-8 LEPS experiment. For the first time, the differential cross sections were measured at low energies and with a deuterium target. A large asymmetry of the production cross sections from protons and neutrons was observed at backward K$^{+/0}$ angles. This suggests the importance of the contact term, which coexists with t-channel K exchange under gauge invariance. This interpretation was compatible with the differential cross sections, decay asymmetry, and photon beam asymmetry measured in the production from protons at forward K$^+$ angles.

The HypHI collaboration aims to perform a precise hypernuclear spectroscopy with stable heavy ion beams and rare isotope beams at GSI and fAIR in order to study hypernuclei at extreme isospin, especially neutron rich hypernuclei to look insight hyperon-nucleon interactions in the neutron rich medium, and hypernuclear magnetic moments to investigate baryon properties in the nuclei. We are currently preparing for the first experiment with $^6$Li and $^{12}$C beams at 2 AGeV to demonstrate the feasibility of a precise hypernuclear spectroscopy by identifying $^{3}_Λ$H, $^{4}_Λ$H and $^{5}_Λ$He. The first physics experiment on these hypernuclei is planned for 2009. In the present document, an overview of the HypHI project and the details of this first experiment will be discussed.

The performance of scintillating fibre detectors was studied with electrons at the spectrometer facility of the Mainz microtron MAMI, as well as in a C-12 beam of 2 AGeV energy and in a beam of different particle species at GSI. Multi-anode photomultipliers were used to read out one or more bundles of 128 fibres each in different geometries. For electrons a time resolution of FWHM = 1 ns was measured in a single detector plane with a detection efficiency epsilon > 99%. A time resolution of 310 ps (FWHM) between two planes of fibres was achieved for carbon ions, leading to a FWHM = 220 ps for a single detector. The hit position residual was measured with a width of FWHM = 0.27 mm. The variation in the measured energy deposition was Delta E/E= 15-20% (FWHM) for carbon ions. In addition, the energy response to p/pi/d particles was studied. Based on the good detector performance fibre hodoscopes will be constructed for the KAOS/A1 spectrometer at MAMI and for the HypHI experiment at GSI.

The decay asymmetries demonstrate a complete dominance of natural-parity exchange processes, showing that isovector unnatural-parity $π$-meson exchange is small. Nevertheless the deduced cross sections of $φ$-mesons from nucleons contributed by isoscalar t-channel exchange processes are not well described by the conventional Pomeron model.

Abstract:
Photoproduction of $φ$-meson on protons was studied by means of linearly polarized photons at forward angles in the low-energy region from threshold to $E_γ$= 2.37 GeV. The differential cross sections at $t = -|t|_{min}$ do not increase smoothly as $E_γ$ increases, but show a local maximum at around 2.0 GeV. Photoproduction of $φ$-meson on protons was studied by means of linearly polarized photons at forward angles in the low-energy region from threshold to $E_γ$= 2.37 GeV. The differential cross sections at $t = -|t|_{min}$ do not increase smoothly as $E_γ$ increases, but show a local maximum at around 2.0 GeV. The angular distributions demonstrate that $φ$-mesons are photo-produced predominantly by helicity-conserving processes, and the local maximum is not likely due to unnatural-parity processes.

Abstract:
The photo-production of $φ$ mesons from Li, C, Al, and Cu at forward angles has been measured at $E_gamma$=1.5--2.4 GeV. The photo-production of $φ$ mesons from Li, C, Al, and Cu at forward angles has been measured at $E_gamma$=1.5--2.4 GeV. The number of events for incoherent phi photo-production is found to have a target mass number dependence of $A^{0.72\pm 0.07}$ in the kinematical region of $|t|\le 0.6$ ${\rm GeV}^2/c^2$. The total cross section of the $φ$-nucleon interaction, $σ_{φN}$, has been estimated as $35^{+17}_{-11}$ mb using the $A$-dependence of the $φ$ photo-production yield and a Glauber-type multiple scattering theory. This value is much larger than $σ_{φN}$ in free space, suggesting that the $φ$ properties might change in the nuclear medium.

In order to study the Sigma-nucleus optical potential, we measured inclusive (pi^-,K^+) spectra on medium-to-heavy nuclear targets: CH_2, Si, Ni, In and Bi. The CH_2 target was used to calibrate the excitation energy scale by using the elementary process p + pi^- -> K^+ + Sigma^-, where the C spectrum was also extracted. The calibration was done with +-0.1 MeV precision. The angular distribution of the elementary cross section was measured, and agreed well with the previous bubble chamber data, but with better statistics, and the magnitudes of the cross sections of the measured inclusive (pi^-,K^+) spectra were also well calibrated. All of the inclusive spectra were found to be similar in shape at a region near to the Sigma^- binding energy threshold, showing a weak mass-number dependence on the magnitude of the cross section. The measured spectra were compared with a theoretical calculation performed within the framework of the Distorted Wave Impulse Approximation (DWIA). It has been demonstrated that a strongly repulsive \sig-nucleus potential with a non-zero size of the imaginary part is required to reproduce the shape of the measured spectra.

Including the new results in the development of the models is, therefore, crucial for understanding the reaction mechanism and to test the presence of baryon resonances which are predicted in quark models but are sofar undiscovered.
