Search for the 6$α$ condensed state in $^{24}$Mg using the $^{12}\rm{C}+{}^{12}\rm{C}$ scattering

We searched for the 6$α$-condensed state in $^{24}$Mg by measuring the $^{12}\rm{C}+{}^{12}\rm{C}$ scattering with the SAKRA Si detector array at $E_\rm{cm}$ = 17.5-25.0 MeV. We searched for the 6$α$-condensed state in $^{24}$Mg by measuring the $^{12}\rm{C}+{}^{12}\rm{C}$ scattering with the SAKRA Si detector array at $E_\rm{cm}$ = 17.5-25.0 MeV. By using the invariant-mass method for the detected 3$α$ particles, the inclusive cross sections for the $^{12}\rm{C}+{}^{12}\rm{C}\to{}^{12}\rm{C}(0^+_2)+X$ and $^{12}\rm{C}(3^-_1)+X$ reactions were determined. In addition, the missing-mass spectroscopy was successfully utilized to determine the excitation energy of the residual $^{12}\rm{C}$ nucleus and the exclusive cross sections for the $^{12}\rm{C}+{}^{12}\rm{C}\to{}^{12}\rm{C}(0^+_2)+{}^{12}\rm{C}(0^+_1)$, $^{12}\rm{C}(0^+_2)+{}^{12}\rm{C}(2^+_1)$, and $^{12}\rm{C}(0^+_2)+{}^{12}\rm{C}(0^+_2)$ reactions. In both the inclusive $^{12}\rm{C}(0^+_2)+X$ channel and the exclusive $^{12}\rm{C}(0^+_2)+{}^{12}\rm{C}(0^+_1)$ channel, the cross section peaked at $E_rm{cm}$ = 19.4 MeV, which correspond to the excitation energy of $E_x$ = 33.3 MeV in $^{24}\rm{Mg}$. This 19.4-MeV state is a candidate for the 6$α$-condensed state because of the agreement of the excitation energy with the theoretical value and its decay property. In the exclusive $^{12}\rm{C}(0^+_2)+{}^{12}\rm{C}(0^+_2)$ channel, a broad state was observed at $E_\rm{cm}$ = 22.5 MeV, which correspond to the excitation energy of $E_x$ = 36.4 MeV in $^{24}\rm{Mg}$. From the angular distribution of the differential cross section, the spin and parity of this 22.5-MeV state was assigned to be $4^+$. In addition, a $2^+$ state was suggested at the low-energy side of the 22.5-MeV state. Because their excitation energies are higher than the theoretical value of the 6$α$-condensed state, these states might be excited states of the 6$α$-condensed state such as the $2^+_2$ and $4^+_1$ states in $^{12}\rm{C}$.

In this study, we evaluate and compare the pulse shape discrimination (PSD) performance of multipixel photon counters (MPPCs, also known as silicon photomultiphers - SiPMs) with that of a typical photomultiplier tube (PMT) when testing using CsI(Tl) scintillators. We use the charge comparison method, whereby we discriminate different types of particles by the ratio of charges integrated within two time-gates (the delayed part and the entire digitized waveform). For a satisfactory PSD performance, a setup should generate many photoelectrons (p.e.) and collect their charges efficiently. The PMT setup generates more p.e. than the MPPC setup does. With the same digitizer and the same long time-gate (the entire digitized waveform), the PMT setup is also better in charge collection. Therefore, the PMT setup demonstrates better PSD performance. We subsequently test the MPPC setup using a new data acquisition (DAQ) system. Using this new DAQ, the long time-gate is extended by nearly four times the length when using the previous digitizer. With this longer time-gate, we collect more p.e. at the tail part of the pulse and almost all the charges of the total collected p.e. Thus, the PSD performance of the MPPC setup is improved significantly. This study also provides an estimation of the short time-gate (the delayed part of the digitized waveform) that can give a satisfactory PSD performance without an extensive analysis to optimize this gate.

An analysis was performed to kinematically isolate Delta knockout events from conventional Delta photoproduction events, and a statistically significant excess of pi+p events was identified, consistent with Delta++ knockout. Two methods were used to estimate the DeltaNN probability in the 3He ground state, corresponding to the observed knockout cross section. The first gave a lower probability limit of 1.5+/-0.6+/-0.5%; the second yielded an upper limit of about 2.6%.

A large reduction of the rho^0 mass in the nuclear medium is reported, inferred from dipion photoproduction spectra in the 1 GeV region, for the reaction 3He(gamma,pi+ pi-)X with a 10% duty factor tagged-photon beam and the TAGX multi-particle spectrometer. The energy range covered (800 < E(gamma) < 1120 MeV) lies mostly below the free rho^0 production threshold, a region which is believed sensitive to modifications of light vector-meson properties at nuclear-matter densities. The rho^0 masses extracted from the MC fitting of the data, m*(rho^0) = 642 +/- 40, 669 +/- 32, and 682 +/- 56 MeV/c^2 for E(gamma) in the 800-880, 880-960, and 960-1040 MeV regions respectively, are independently corroborated by a measured, assumption-free, kinematical observable. This mass shift, far exceeding current mean-field driven theoretical predictions, may be suggestive of rho^0 decay within the range of the nucleonic field.
