Deep Inelastic Scattering with Application to Nuclear Targets: Lectures at the 1985 Los Alamos School on Relativistic Dynamics and Quark Nuclear Physics
Abstract: This paper is essentially a verbatim reconstruction of lectures that I gave at the Los Alamos School on Relativistic Dynamics and Quark Nuclear Physics in 1985. They were published in the school proceedings, but the book is not widely available. The Los Alamos School took place at the height of the first wave of interest in the quark substructure of nuclei, stimulated by the 1983 discovery of the… ▽ More

Ambiguities in the definition of local spatial densities in light hadrons
Abstract: The relationship between the matrix element of a local operator and the Fourier transform of the associated form factor fails for systems such as the nucleon where its intrinsic size is of order its Compton wavelength. Although one can conceive of an intrinsic charge density distribution in the proton, there does not seem to be an unambiguous way to define, compute, or measure it precisely.

Strange Hadron Spectroscopy with Secondary KL Beam in Hall D
Abstract: We propose to create a secondary beam of neutral kaons in Hall D at Jefferson Lab to be used with the GlueX experimental setup for strange hadron spectroscopy. The superior CEBAF electron beam will enable a flux on the order of $1\times 10^4~K_L/sec$, which exceeds the flux of that previously attained at SLAC by three orders of magnitude. The use of a deuteron target will provide first measurement… ▽ More

Search for Exotic Gluonic States in the Nucleus, A Letter of Intent to Jefferson Lab PAC 44
Abstract: We renew our intent to submit a proposal to perform a search for a non-zero value of the unmeasured hadronic double helicity flip structure function $Δ(x,Q^2)$, predicted to be sensitive to gluons in the nucleus. This would be performed with an unpolarized electron beam and transversely polarized, spin-1, nuclear target. This structure function was first identified by Jaffe and Manohar in 1989 as… ▽ More

Implications of the Present Bound on the Width of the Theta(1540)
Abstract: The recently reported Theta(1540) exotic baryon seems to be very narrow: Gamma(Theta)< 1 MeV according to some analyses. Using methods of low energy scattering theory, we develop expectations for the width of the Theta, an elastic resonance in KN scattering in a theory where the characteristic range of interactions is ~1 Fermi. If the Theta is a potential scattering resonance, generated by the f… ▽ More

Diquarks and Exotic Spectroscopy
Abstract: We propose that the recently discovered Θbaryon is a bound state of four quarks and an antiquark, containing two highly correlated ud-pairs. If so, the Θbaryon has positive parity, and it lies in an near-ideally mixed SU(3)_{f} \mathbf{\bar{10}}_{f} oplus \mathbf{8}_{f}. The Roper resonance and the P_{11}(1710) fit naturally into this classification. We predict an isospin 3/2 multiplet of Ξ's (S… ▽ More

The Spin Structure of the Nucleon: Theoretical Overview
Abstract: I review what is known about the quark and gluon spin distributions in the nucleon. I discuss in some detail (a) the existence of sum rules for angular momentum; (b) the interpretation and possible measurement of the nucleon's transversity distributions; and (c) the uses of spin-dependent fragmentation functions.

Review of Speculative "Disaster Scenarios" at RHIC
Abstract: We discuss speculative disaster scenarios inspired by hypothetical new fundamental processes that might occur in high energy relativistic heavy ion collisions. We estimate the parameters relevant to black hole production; we find that they are absurdly small. We show that other accelerator and (especially) cosmic ray environments have already provided far more auspicious opportunities for transi… ▽ More

Interference Fragmentation Functions and Valence Quark Spin Distributions in the Nucleon
Abstract: We explore further applications of the twist-two quark interference fragmentation functions introduced earlier. We show that semi-inclusive production of two pions in the current fragmentation region in deep inelastic scattering of a longitudinally polarized electron on a longitudinally polarized nucleon can provide a probe of the valence quark spin (or helicity difference) distribution in the n… ▽ More
