Model independent reconstruction of impact parameter distributions for intermediate energy heavy ion collisions
Abstract: We present a model-independent method to reconstruct the impact parameter distributions of experimental data for intermediate energy heavy ion collisions, adapted from a recently proposed approach for ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions. The method takes into account the fluctuations which are inherent to the relationship between any experimental observable and the impact parameter in this ene… ▽ More

Estimate of average freeze-out volume in multifragmentation events
Abstract: An estimate of the average freeze-out volume for multifragmentation events is presented. Values of volumes are obtained by means of a simulation using the experimental charged product partitions measured by the 4pi multidetector INDRA for 129Xe central collisions on Sn at 32 AMeV incident energy. The input parameters of the simulation are tuned by means of the comparison between the experimental… ▽ More

Multifragmentation of very heavy nuclear systems (III): fragment velocity correlations and event topology at freeze-out
Abstract: Kinetic energy spectra and fragment velocity correlations, simulated by means of stochastic mean-field calculations, are successfully confronted with experimental data for single multifragmenting sources prepared at the same excitation energy per nucleon in 32 AMeV 129Xe+natSn and 36 AMeV 155Gd+natU central collisions. Relying thus on simulations, average freeze-out times of 200-240 fm/c are est… ▽ More

A study of nuclear stop** in central symmetric nuclear collisions at intermediate energies
Abstract: Nuclear stop** has been investigated in central symmetric nuclear collisions at intermediate energies. Firstly, it is found that the isotropy ratio, Riso, reaches a minimum near the Fermi energy and saturates or slowly increases depending on the mass of the system as the beam energy increases. An approximate scaling based on the size of the system is found above the Fermi energy suggesting the… ▽ More

Liquid-gas phase transition in hot nuclei: correlation between dynamical and thermodynamical signals
Abstract: The dynamics and thermodynamics of phase transition in hot nuclei are studied through experimental results on multifragmentation of heavy systems (A$geq$200) formed in central heavy ion collisions. Different signals indicative of a phase transition studied in the INDRA collaboration are presented and their consistency is stressed.

Correlations between signals of the liquid-gas phase transition in nuclei
Abstract: Finite systems such as atomic nuclei present at phase transition specific features different from those observed at the thermodynamic limit. Several characteristic signals were found in samples of events resulting from heavy ion collisions at and above the Fermi energy. The concomitant observation of different signatures of a liquid-gas phase transition in nuclei on a given sample strongly suppo… ▽ More

Measurements of sideward flow around the balance energy
Abstract: Sideward flow values have been determined with the INDRA multidetector for Ar+Ni, Ni+Ni and Xe+Sn systems studied at GANIL in the 30 to 100 A.MeV incident energy range. The balance energies found for Ar+Ni and Ni+Ni systems are in agreement with previous experimental results and theoretical calculations. Negative sideward flow values have been measured. The possible origins of such negative valu… ▽ More

Liquid-Gas Coexistence Region in Central Xe+Sn Reactions
Abstract: Charge partitions and distributions of fragments emitted in multifragmentation of fused systems produced in central collisions are studied over the incident energy range 32-50 MeV per nucleon. Most of the charged products are well identified thanks to the high performances of the INDRA 4pi array. Supported by dynamical calculations, charge correlations are used t$ evidence, or not, spinodal inst… ▽ More

Response of CsI(Tl) scintillators over a large range in energy and atomic number of ions (Part II): calibration and identification in the INDRA array
Abstract: The light output of the 324 CsI(Tl) scintillators of INDRA has been measured over a large range both in energy: 1 - 80 AMeV and in atomic number of incident ions: Z = 1 - 60. An analytical expression for the nonlinear total light response as a function of the energy and the identity of the ion is proposed. It depends on four parameters. For three of them, connected to CsI(Tl) intrinsic character… ▽ More

Response of CsI(Tl) scintillators over a large range in energy and atomic number of ions (Part I): recombination and delta -- electrons
Abstract: A simple formalism describing the light response of CsI(Tl) to heavy ions, which quantifies the luminescence and the quenching in terms of the competition between radiative transitions following the carrier trap** at the Tl activator sites and the electron-hole recombination, is proposed. The effect of the delta rays on the scintillation efficiency is for the first time quantitatively included… ▽ More

Evidence for Spinodal Decomposition in Nuclear Multifragmentation
Abstract: Multifragmentation of a ``fused system'' was observed for central collisions between 32 MeV/nucleon 129Xe and natSn. Most of the resulting charged products were well identified thanks to the high performances of the INDRA 4pi array. Experimental higher-order charge correlations for fragments show a weak but non ambiguous enhancement of events with nearly equal-sized fragments. Supported by dynam… ▽ More

Experimental evidence for spinodal decomposition in multifragmentation of heavy systems
Abstract: Multifragmentation of fused systems was observed for central collisions between 32 AMeV 129Xe and Sn, and 36 AMeV 155Gd and U. Previous extensive comparisons between the two systems led to the hypothesis of spinodal decomposition of finite systems as the origin of multifragmentation for incident energies around 30 AMeV. New results on velocity and charge correlations of fragments bring strong ar… ▽ More

Emission time scale of light particles in the system Xe+Sn at 50 AMeV. A probe for dynamical emission ?
Abstract: Proton and deuteron correlation functions have been investigated with both impact parameter and emission source selections. The correlations of the system (129Xe + natSn) at 50 AMeV have been measured with the 4 pi INDRA which provides a complete kinematical description of each event. The emission time scale analyzed with a quantum model reveals the time sequence of the light particles emitted b… ▽ More
