Fission at low excitation energy is an ideal playground to probe the impact of nuclear structure on nuclear dynamics. While the importance of structural effects in the nascent fragments is well-established in the (trans-)actinide region, the observation of asymmetric fission in several neutron-deficient pre-actinides can be explained by various mechanisms. To deepen our insight into that puzzle, an innovative approach based on inverse kinematics and an enhanced version of the VAMOS++ heavy-ion spectrometer was implemented at the GANIL facility, Caen. Fission of $^{178}$Hg was induced by fusion of $^{124}$Xe and $^{54}$Fe. The two fragments were detected in coincidence using VAMOS++ supplemented with a new SEcond Detection arm. For the first time in the pre-actinide region, access to the pre-neutron mass and total kinetic energy distributions, and the simultaneous isotopic identification of one the fission fragment, was achieved. The present work describes the experimental approach, and discusses the pre-neutron observables in the context of an extended asymmetric-fission island located south-west of $^{208}Pb. A comparison with different models is performed, demonstrating the importance of this "new" asymmetric-fission island for elaborating on driving effects in fission.

The new neutron-deficient isotope $^{249}$No was synthesized for the first time in the fusion-evaporation reaction $^{204}$Pb($^{48}$Ca,3n)$^{249}$No. After separation, using the kinematic separator SHELS, the new isotope was identified with the GABRIELA detection system through genetic correlations with the known daughter and granddaughter nuclei $^{245}$Fm and $^{241}$Cf. The alpha-decay activity of $^{249}$No has an energy of 9129(22)$~$keV and half-life 38.3(2.8) ms. An upper limit of 0.2\% was measured for the fission branch of $^{249}$No. Based on the present data and recent information on the decay properties of $^{253}$Rf and aided by Geant4 simulations, the ground state of $^{249}$No is assigned the 5/2$^+$[622] neutron configuration and a partial decay scheme from $^{253}$Rf to $^{245}$Fm could be established. The production cross-section was found to be $σ$(3n)=0.47(4) nb at a mid-target beam energy of 225.4 MeV, which corresponds to the maximum of the calculated excitation function. Correlations of the $^{249}$No alpha activity with subsequent alpha decays of energy 7728(20) keV and half-life $1.2_{-0.4}^{+1.0}$ min provided a firm measurement of the electron-capture or $β^{+}$ branch of $^{245}$Fm to $^{245}$Es. The excitation function for the 1n, 2n and 3n evaporation channels was measured. In the case of the 2n-evaporation channel $^{250}$No, a strong variation of the ground state and isomeric state populations as a function of bombarding energy could be evidenced.

An experiment on the study of the $^{246}$Fm spontaneous fission was conducted using the SHELS separator. The isotope was synthesized in the complete fusion reaction of $^{40}$Ar beam ions and $^{208}$Pb target nuclei. The neutron yields of $^{246}$Fm spontaneous fission ($\overlineν = 3.79\pm0.30$, $σ^{2}_ν = 2.1$) were obtained using the SFiNx detector system. The multiplicity distribution of emitted prompt neutrons was restored using the Tikhonov method of statistical regularisation ($\overlineν_{r} = 3.79\pm0.20$, $σ^{2}_{νr} = 2.8$). The spontaneous fission branching ratio ($b_{SF} = 0.061\pm0.005$) and the half-life ($T_{1/2} = 1.50^{+0.08}_{-0.07}$ s) of the isotope were determined. The experimental data were compared with scission point model predictions. Excellent convergence was observed in the average number of neutrons per spontaneous fission process. However, the forms of the experimental and model prompt neutron multiplicity distributions differ significantly.

An analysis of recent experimental data [J. Khuyagbaatar et al., Phys. Rev. C 104, L031303 (2021)] has established the existence of two fissioning states in $^{253}$Rf: the ground state and a low-lying isomeric state, most likely involving the same neutron single-particle configurations as in the lighter isotone $^{251}$No. The ratio of fission half-lives measured in $^{253}$Rf was used to predict the fission properties of the 1/2$^{+}$ isomeric state in $^{251}$No and draw conclusions as to the stability against fission of even lighter Rf systems. This paper focusses again on the fission properties of $^{253}$Rf and their impact on the stability of other neutron deficient isotopes, using new and improved data collected from two experiments performed at the Flerov Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions in Dubna, Russia. Two fission activities with half-lives of 52.8(4.4)$~μ$s and 9.9(1.2) ms were measured in the case of $^{253}$Rf, confirming the results of J. Kkuyagbaatar et al. A third state, at much higher excitation energy, was also observed through the detection of its electromagnetic decay to the 52.8$~μ$s state. This observation leads to the opposite quantum-configuration assignments for the fissioning states as compared to the ones established by J. Khuyagbaatar et al., namely that the higher-spin state has the shortest fission half-life. This inversion of the ratio of fission hindrances between the low and high-spin states is corroborated in the isotone $^{251}$No by the non observation of any substantial fission branch from the low-spin isomer.

The electromagnetic decay of a new excited state in $^{253}$No has been observed. The state lies 750 keV above the ground state and is favourably populated in the alpha decay of the low-lying spin isomer of $^{257}$Rf. It decays to the 9/2$^-$ ground state by an M1 transition and is assigned the 11/2$^-$[725] Nilsson configuration. The presence of this state suggests a possible reinterpretation of the decay of the high-K isomer in $^{253}$No.

High-resolution gamma-ray spectroscopy of 18N is performed with the Advanced GAmma Tracking Array AGATA, following deep-inelastic processes induced by an 18O beam on a 181Ta target. Six states are newly identified, which together with the three known excitations exhaust all negative-parity excited states expected in 18N below the neutron threshold. Spin and parities are proposed for all located states on the basis of decay branchings and comparison with large-scale shell-model calculations performed in the p-sd space, with the YSOX interaction. Of particular interest is the location of the 0^-_1 and 1^-_2 excitations, which provide strong constrains for cross-shell p-sd matrix elements based on realistic interactions, and help to simultaneously reproduce the ground and first-excited states in 16N and 18N, for the first time. Understanding the 18N structure may also have significant impact on neutron-capture cross-section calculations in r-process modeling including light neutron-rich nuclei.

A novel Monte Carlo technique has been developed to determine lifetimes of excited states in the tens-to-hundreds femtoseconds range. The method is applied to low-energy heavy-ion binary reactions populating nuclei with complex velocity distributions. Its relevance is demonstrated in connection with the $^{18}$O(7.0 MeV/u) + $^{181}$Ta experiment, performed at GANIL with the AGATA+VAMOS+PARIS setup, to study neutron-rich O, C, N, ... nuclei. Excited states in $^{17}$O and $^{19}$O, with known lifetimes, are used to validate the method over the $\sim$20-400 fs lifetime-sensitivity range. Emphasis is given to the unprecedented position resolution provided by $γ$-tracking arrays, which turns out to be essential for reaching the required accuracy in Doppler-shift correction, at the basis of the detailed analysis of $γ$-ray lineshape and resulting state lifetime determination. The technique is anticipated to be an important tool for lifetime investigations in exotic neutron-rich nuclei, produced with intense ISOL-type beams.

To test the predictive power of ab initio nuclear structure theory, the lifetime of the second 2+ state in neutron-rich 20O, tau(2+_2 ) = 150(+80-30) fs, and an estimate for the lifetime of the second 2+ state in 16C have been obtained, for the first time. The results were achieved via a novel Monte Carlo technique that allowed us to measure nuclear state lifetimes in the tens-to-hundreds femtoseconds range, by analyzing the Doppler-shifted gamma-transition line shapes of products of low-energy transfer and deep-inelastic processes in the reaction 18O (7.0 MeV/u) + 181Ta. The requested sensitivity could only be reached owing to the excellent performances of the AGATA gamma-tracking array, coupled to the PARIS scintillator array and to the VAMOS++ magnetic spectrometer. The experimental lifetimes agree with predictions of ab initio calculations using two- and three-nucleon interactions, obtained with the valence-space in-medium similarity renormalization group for 20O, and with the no-core shell model for 16C. The present measurement shows the power of electromagnetic observables, determined with high-precision gamma spectroscopy, to assess the quality of first-principles nuclear structure calculations, complementing common benchmarks based on nuclear energies. The proposed experimental approach will be essential for short lifetimes measurements in unexplored regions of the nuclear chart, including r-process nuclei, when intense ISOL-type beams become available.

In order to understand the performance of the PARIS (Photon Array for the studies with Radioactive Ion and Stable beams) detector, detailed characterization of two individual phoswich (LaBr$_3$(Ce)-NaI(Tl)) elements has been carried out. The detector response is investigated over a wide range of $E_γ$ = 0.6 to 22.6 MeV using radioactive sources and employing $^{11}B(p,γ)$ reaction at $E_p$ = 163 keV and $E_p$ = 7.2 MeV. The linearity of energy response of the LaBr$_3$(Ce) detector is tested upto 22.6 MeV using three different voltage dividers. The data acquisition system using CAEN digitizers is set up and optimized to get the best energy and time resolution. The energy resolution of $\sim$ 2.1% at $E_γ$ = 22.6~MeV is measured for the configuration giving best linearity upto high energy. Time resolution of the phoswich detector is measured with a $^{60}$Co source after implementing CFD algorithm for the digitized pulses and is found to be excellent (FWHM $\sim$ 315~ps). In order to study the effect of count rate on detectors, the centroid position and width of the $E_γ$ = 835~keV peak were measured upto 220 kHz count rate. The measured efficiency data with radioactive sources are in good agreement with GEANT4 based simulations. The total energy spectrum after the add-back of energy signals in phoswich components is also presented.

Their high-spin level schemes have been extended to higher excitation energy from the triple gamma-ray coincidence data. The gamma-gamma angular correlations have been analyzed in order to assign spin and parity values to many observed states. Moreover the half-lives of isomeric states have been measured from the delayed coincidences between the fission-fragment detector SAPhIR and Euroball, as well as from the timing information of the Ge detectors. The behaviors of the yrast structures identified in the present work are first discussed in comparison with the general features known in the mass region, particularly the breakings of neutron pairs occupying the nuh11/2 orbit identified in the neighboring Sn nuclei. The experimental level schemes are then compared to shell-model calculations performed in this work. The analysis of the wave functions shows the effects of the proton-pair breaking along the yrast lines of the heavy Te isotopes.

The configurations of the three structures observed above ~ 2 MeV excitation energy are first discussed by analogy with the proton excitations identified in the semi-magic 137Cs nucleus, which involve the three high-j orbits lying above the Z=50 gap, pi g_{7/2}, pi d_{5/2} and pi h_{11/2}. This is confirmed by the results of shell-model calculations performed in this work.

Five N=82 isotones have been produced in two fusion-fission reactions and their gamma-rays studied with the Euroball array. The high-spin states of 139La have been identified for the first time, while the high-spin yrast and near-to-yrast structures of the four others have been greatly extended. From angular correlation analysis, spin values have been assigned to some states of 136Xe and 137Cs. Several cascades involving gamma-rays of 139La have been found to be delayed, they deexcite an isomeric state with T1/2= 315(35) ns located at 1800-keV excitation energy. The excited states of these five N=82 isotones are expected to be due to various proton excitations involving the three high-j subshells located above the Z=50 shell closure. This is confirmed by the results of shell-model calculations performed in this work. In addition, high-spin states corresponding to the excitation of the neutron core have been unambiguously identified in 136Xe, 137Cs, and 138Ba.

The 119-126Sn nuclei have been produced as fission fragments in two reactions induced by heavy ions: 12C+238U at 90 MeV bombarding energy, 18O+208Pb at 85 MeV. Their level schemes have been built from gamma rays detected using the Euroball array. High-spin states located above the long-lived isomeric states of the even- and odd-A 120-126Sn nuclei have been identified. Moreover isomeric states lying around 4.5 MeV have been established in 120,122,124,126Sn from the delayed coincidences between the fission fragment detector SAPhIR and the Euroball array. The states located above 3-MeV excitation energy are ascribed to several broken pairs of neutrons occupying the nu h11/2 orbit. The maximum value of angular momentum available in such a high-j shell, i.e. for mid-occupation and the breaking of the three neutron pairs, has been identified. This process is observed for the first time in spherical nuclei.

A great deal of research work has been undertaken in the alpha-clustering study since the pioneering discovery, half a century ago, of 12C+12C molecular resonances. Our knowledge of the field of the physics of nuclear molecules has increased considerably and nuclear clustering remains one of the most fruitful domains of nuclear physics, facing some of the greatest challenges and opportunities in the years ahead. In this work, the occurence of "exotic" shapes in light N=Z alpha-like nuclei is investigated. Various approaches of superdeformed and hyperdeformed bands associated with quasimolecular resonant structures are presented. Results on clustering aspects are also discussed for light neutron-rich Oxygen isotopes.

Charged particle and gamma decays in 24Mg* are investigated for excitation energies where quasimolecular resonances appear in 12C+12C collisions. Various theoretical predictions for the occurence of superdeformed and hyperdeformed bands associated with resonance structures with low spin are discussed within the measured 24Mg* excitation energy region. The inverse kinematics reaction 24Mg+12C is studied at E_lab(24Mg) = 130 MeV, an energy which enables the population of 24Mg states decaying into 12C+12C resonant break-up states. Exclusive data were collected with the Binary Reaction Spectrometer in coincidence with EUROBALL IV installed at the VIVITRON Tandem facility at Strasbourg. Specific structures with large deformation were selectively populated in binary reactions and their associated gamma decays studied. Coincident events associated with inelastic and alpha-transfer channels have been selected by choosing the excitation energy or the entry point via the two-body Q-values. The analysis of the binary reaction channels is presented with a particular emphasis on 24Mg-gamma, 20Ne-gamma and 16O-gamma coincidences. New information (spin and branching ratios) is deduced on high-energy states in 24Mg and 16O, respectively.

The deformation effects in the rapidly rotating nuclei have been investigated through the energy distribution of the alpha-particle combined to statistical-model calculations. In the case of low-multiplicity events, the ratio between first particle emitted has been measured and shows significant disagreement with the predictions of the statistical-model. This may explain The large discrepancies observed in proton energy spectra measured in previous experiments performed in the same mass region.

The analysis suggests the onset of large nuclear deformation in $^{40}$Ca at high spin.

This spin dependence approach suggests the onset of large nuclear deformation in $^{40}$Ca at high spin. This conclusion might be connected with the recent observation of superdeformed bands in the $^{40}$Ca nucleus. The analysis of $α$ particles in coincidence with $^{32}$S fragments suggests a surprisingly strong $^{8}$Be cluster emission of a binary nature.

Two-neutron removal cross-sections, neutron angular distributions and invariant mass spectra characteristic of a halo were observed and the electromagnetic (EMD) contributions deduced. Comparison with three-body model predictions indicate that the halo wavefunction contains a large 2s1/2^2 admixture. The EMD invariant mass spectrum exhibited a relatively narrow structure near threshold (Edecay=1.8+/-0.1 MeV, Gamma = 0.8+/-0.4 MeV) consistent with a soft-dipole excitation.
