Probing pre-formed alpha particles in the ground state of nuclei
Abstract: In this Letter, we report on alpha particle emission through the nuclear break-up in the reaction 40Ca on a 40Ca target at 50A MeV. It is observed that, similarly to nucleons, alpha particles can be emitted to the continuum with very specific angular distribution during the reaction. The alpha particle properties can be understood as resulting from an alpha cluster in the daughter nucleus that is… ▽ More

Nuclear break-up of 11Be
Abstract: The break-up of 11Be was studied at 41AMeV using a secondary beam of 11Be from the GANIL facility on a 48Ti target by measuring correlations between the 10Be core, the emitted neutrons and gamma rays. The nuclear break-up leading to the emission of a neutron at large angle in the laboratory frame is identified with the towing mode through its characteristic n-fragment correlation. The experiment… ▽ More

The nuclear liquid gas phase transition and phase coexistence: A review
Abstract: In this talk we will review the different signals of liquid gas phase transition in nuclei. From the theoretical side we will first discuss the foundations of the concept of equilibrium, phase transition and critical behaviors in infinite and finite systems. From the experimental point of view we will first recall the evidences for some strong modification of the behavior of hot nuclei. Then we… ▽ More

Experimental Signals of Phase Transition
Abstract: The connection between the thermodynamics of charged finite nuclear systems and the asymptotically measured partitions is presented. Some open questions, concerning in particular equilibrium partitions are discussed. We show a detailed comparison of the decay patterns in Au+ C,Cu,Au central collisions and in Au quasi-projectile events. Observation of abnormally large fluctuations in carefully se… ▽ More

Critical behaviors in central and peripheral collisions: a comparative analysis
Abstract: Quasi-projectile events from peripheral 35 A.MeV Au+ Au collisions are compared to central Au + C, Au + Cu and Au + Au events in the same range of excitation energy in terms of critical partitions and critical exponents. All the different data sets coherently point to a value E*c=4.5 A.MeV for the apparent critical excitation energy. The critical exponents tau, sigma are compatible with the obse… ▽ More

On the reliability of negative heat capacity measurements
Abstract: A global protocol for the thermostatistical analysis of hot nuclear sources is discussed. Within our method of minimization of variances we show that the abnormal kinetic energy fluctuation signal recently reported in different experimental data (M.D'Agostino et al.-Phys. Lett. B 473 (2000) 219, N. Le Neindre et al.- contr. to the XXXVIII Bormio Winter Meeting on Nucl. Phys. (2001) 404) is a gen… ▽ More

Evidence for Spinodal Decomposition in Nuclear Multifragmentation
Abstract: Multifragmentation of a ``fused system'' was observed for central collisions between 32 MeV/nucleon 129Xe and natSn. Most of the resulting charged products were well identified thanks to the high performances of the INDRA 4pi array. Experimental higher-order charge correlations for fragments show a weak but non ambiguous enhancement of events with nearly equal-sized fragments. Supported by dynam… ▽ More

Collective response of nuclei: Comparison between experiments and extended mean-field calculations
Abstract: The giant monopole, dipole and quadrupole responses in $^{40}$Ca, $^{90}$Zr, $^{120}$Sn and $^{208}$Pb are investigated using linear response treatment based on a stochastic one-body transport theory. Effects of the coupling to low-lying surface modes (coherent mechanism) and the incoherent mechanism due to nucleon-nucleon collisions are included beyond the usual mean-field description. We empha… ▽ More

Experimental evidence for spinodal decomposition in multifragmentation of heavy systems
Abstract: Multifragmentation of fused systems was observed for central collisions between 32 AMeV 129Xe and Sn, and 36 AMeV 155Gd and U. Previous extensive comparisons between the two systems led to the hypothesis of spinodal decomposition of finite systems as the origin of multifragmentation for incident energies around 30 AMeV. New results on velocity and charge correlations of fragments bring strong ar… ▽ More

Multifragmentation of a very heavy nuclear system (II): bulk properties and spinodal decomposition
Abstract: The properties of fragments and light charged particles emitted in multifragmentation of single sources formed in central 36AMeV Gd+U collisions are reviewed. Most of the products are isotropically distributed in the reaction c.m. Fragment kinetic energies reveal the onset of radial collective energy. A bulk effect is experimentally evidenced from the similarity of the charge distribution with t… ▽ More

Negative heat capacity in the critical region of nuclear fragmentation: an experimental evidence of the liquid-gas phase transition
Abstract: An experimental indication of negative heat capacity in excited nuclear systems is inferred from the event by event study of energy fluctuations in $Au$ quasi-projectile sources formed in $Au+Au$ collisions at 35 A.MeV. The excited source configuration is reconstructed through a calorimetric analysis of its de-excitation products. Fragment partitions show signs of a critical behavior at about 5… ▽ More
