Abstract:
The elements in the hyperoctahedral group $\mathfrak{B}_n$ can be treated as signed permutations with the natural order $\cdots<-2<-1<0<1<2<\cdots$, or as colored permutations with the $r$-order $-1<_r-2<_r\cdots<_r0<_r1<_r2<_r\cdots$. For any $π\in\mathfrak{B}_n$, let $\operatorname{des}^B(π)$ and $\operatorname{ides}^B(π)$ be the number of descents and inverse descents in $π$ under the natural order, and let $\operatorname{des}_B(π)$ and $\operatorname{ides}_B(π)$ be the number of descents and inverse descents in $π$ under the $r$-order. In this paper, by investigating signed permutation grids under both the natural order and the $r$-order, we give combinatorial proofs for six recurrence formulas of the joint distribution of descents and inverse descents over the hyperoctahedral group $\mathfrak{B}_n$, the set in involutions of $\mathfrak{B}_n$ denoted by $\mathcal{I}_n^B$, and the set of fixed-point free involutions in $\mathfrak{B}_n$ denoted by $\mathcal{J}_n^B$, respectively. Some of these six formulas are new, and some reveal the combinatorial essences of the results obtained by Visontai, Moustakas and Cao-Liu through algebraic approaches such as quasisymmetric functions. Furthermore, from these formulas, we conclude that $(\operatorname{des}^B,\operatorname{ides}^B)$ and $(\operatorname{des}_B,\operatorname{ides}_B)$ are equidistributed over both $\mathfrak{B}_n$ and $\mathcal{I}_n^B$, but not on $\mathcal{J}_n^B$.

Abstract:
Let $A_{n,i,j}$ be the number of permutations on $[n]$ with $(i-1)$ descents and $(j-1)$ inverse descents. Carlitz, Roselle and Scoville in 1966 first revealed some combinatorial and arithmetic properties of $A_{n,i,j}$, which contain a recurrence of $A_{n,i,j}$. Using the idea of balls in boxes, Petersen gave a combinatorial interpretation for the generating function of $A_{n,i,j}$, and obtained…

Carlitz, Roselle and Scoville in 1966 first revealed some combinatorial and arithmetic properties of $A_{n,i,j}$, which contain a recurrence of $A_{n,i,j}$. Using the idea of balls in boxes, Petersen gave a combinatorial interpretation for the generating function of $A_{n,i,j}$, and obtained the same recurrence of $A_{n,i,j}$ from its generating function. Subsequently, Petersen asked whether there is a visual way to understand this recurrence. In this paper, after observing the internal structures of permutation grids, we present a combinatorial proof for the recurrence of $A_{n,i,j}$. Let $I_{n,k}$ and $J_{n,k}$ be the number of involutions and fixed-point free involutions on $[n]$ with $k$ descents, respectively. With the help of algebraic method on generating functions, Guo and Zeng derived two recurrences of $I_{n,k}$ and J_{2n,k}$ that play an essential role in the proof of their unimodal properties. Surprisingly, the constructive approach to the recurrence of $A_{n,i,j}$ is found to fuel the combinatorial interpretations of these two recurrences of $I_{n,k}$ and $J_{2n,k}$.

Abstract:
The two partition functions $p_ω(n)$ and $p_ν(n)$ were introduced by Andrews, Dixit and Yee, which are related to the third order mock theta functions $ω(q)$ and $ν(q)$, respectively. Recently, Andrews and Yee analytically studied two identities that connect the refinements of $p_ω(n)$ and $p_ν(n)$ with the generalized bivariate mock theta functions $ω(z;q)$ and $ν(z;q)$, respectively. However, they stated these identities cried out for bijective proofs. In this paper, we first define the generalized trivariate mock theta functions $ω(y,z;q)$ and $ν(y,z;q)$. Then by utilizing odd Ferrers graph, we obtain certain identities concerning to $ω(y,z;q)$ and $ν(y,z;q)$, which extend some early results of Andrews that are related to $ω(z;q)$ and $ν(z;q)$. In virtue of the combinatorial interpretations that arise from the identities involving $ω(y,z;q)$ and $ν(y,z;q)$, we finally present bijective proofs for the two identities of Andrews-Yee.

In a recent work, Andrews gave analytic proofs of two conjectures concerning some variations of two combinatorial identities between partitions of a positive integer into odd parts and partitions into distinct parts discovered by Beck. Subsequently, using the same method as Andrews, Chern presented the analytic proof of another Beck's conjecture relating the gap-free partitions and distinct partitions with odd length. However, the combinatorial interpretations of these conjectures are still unclear and required. In this paper, motivated by Glaisher's bijection, we give the combinatorial proofs of these three conjectures directly or by proving more generalized results.

Abstract:
Anderson established a connection between core partitions and order ideals of certain posets by map** a partition to its $β$-set. In this paper, we give a characterization of the poset $P_{(s,s+1,s+2)}$ whose order ideals correspond to $(s,s+1,s+2)$-core partitions. Using this characterization, we obtain the number of $(s,s+1,s+2)$-core partitions, the maximum size and the average size of an…
