In this paper, we propose to estimate the invariant subspace across heterogeneous multiple networks using a novel bias-corrected joint spectral embedding algorithm. The proposed algorithm recursively calibrates the diagonal bias of the sum of squared network adjacency matrices by leveraging the closed-form bias formula and iteratively updates the subspace estimator using the most recent estimated bias. Correspondingly, we establish a complete recipe for the entrywise subspace estimation theory for the proposed algorithm, including a sharp entrywise subspace perturbation bound and the entrywise eigenvector central limit theorem. Leveraging these results, we settle two multiple network inference problems: the exact community detection in multilayer stochastic block models and the hypothesis testing of the equality of membership profiles in multilayer mixed membership models. Our proof relies on delicate leave-one-out and leave-two-out analyses that are specifically tailored to block-wise symmetric random matrices and a martingale argument that is of fundamental interest for the entrywise eigenvector central limit theorem.

In this paper, we study the privacy-preserving distributed optimization problem, aiming to prevent attackers from stealing the private information of agents. For this purpose, we propose a novel privacy-preserving algorithm based on the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES), which is both secure and computationally efficient. By appropriately constructing the underlying weight matrices, our algorithm can be applied to time-varying directed networks. We show that the proposed algorithm can protect an agent's privacy if the agent has at least one legitimate neighbor at the initial iteration. Under the assumption that the objective function is strongly convex and Lipschitz smooth, we rigorously prove that the proposed algorithm has a linear convergence rate. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated by numerical simulations of the canonical sensor fusion problem.

We study online policy optimization in nonlinear time-varying dynamical systems where the true dynamical models are unknown to the controller. This problem is challenging because, unlike in linear systems, the controller cannot obtain globally accurate estimations of the ground-truth dynamics using local exploration. We propose a meta-framework that combines a general online policy optimization algorithm ($\texttt{ALG}$) with a general online estimator of the dynamical system's model parameters ($\texttt{EST}$). We show that if the hypothetical joint dynamics induced by $\texttt{ALG}$ with known parameters satisfies several desired properties, the joint dynamics under inexact parameters from $\texttt{EST}$ will be robust to errors. Importantly, the final policy regret only depends on $\texttt{EST}$'s predictions on the visited trajectory, which relaxes a bottleneck on identifying the true parameters globally. To demonstrate our framework, we develop a computationally efficient variant of Gradient-based Adaptive Policy Selection, called Memoryless GAPS (M-GAPS), and use it to instantiate $\texttt{ALG}$. Combining M-GAPS with online gradient descent to instantiate $\texttt{EST}$ yields (to our knowledge) the first local regret bound for online policy optimization in nonlinear time-varying systems with unknown dynamics.

Understanding the distributions of spectral estimators in low-rank random matrix models, also known as signal-plus-noise matrix models, is fundamentally important in various statistical learning problems, including network analysis, matrix denoising, and matrix completion. This paper investigates the entrywise eigenvector distributions in a broad range of low-rank signal-plus-noise matrix models by establishing their higher-order accurate stochastic expansions. At a high level, the stochastic expansion states that the eigenvector perturbation approximately decomposes into the sum of a first-order term and a second-order term, where the first-order term in the expansion is a linear function of the noise matrix, and the second-order term is a linear function of the squared noise matrix. Our theoretical finding is used to derive the bias correction procedure for the eigenvectors. We further establish the Edgeworth expansion formula for the studentized entrywise eigenvector statistics. In particular, under mild conditions, we show that Cramér's condition on the smoothness of noise distribution is not required, thanks to the self-smoothing effect of the second-order term in the eigenvector stochastic expansion. The Edgeworth expansion result is then applied to justify the higher-order correctness of the residual bootstrap procedure for approximating the distributions of the studentized entrywise eigenvector statistics.

In this paper we consider the vanishing viscosity limit of solutions to the initial boundary value problem for compressible viscoelastic equations in the half space. When the initial deformation gradient does not degenerate and there is no vacuum initially, we establish the uniform regularity estimates of solutions to the initial-boundary value problem for the three-dimensional compressible viscoelastic equations in the Sobolev spaces. Then we justify the vanishing viscosity limit of solutions of the compressible viscoelastic equations based on the uniform regularity estimates and the compactness arguments. Both the no-slip boundary condition and the Navier-slip type boundary condition on velocity are addressed in this paper. On the one hand, for the corresponding vanishing viscosity limit of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations with the no-slip boundary condition, it is impossible to derive such uniform energy estimates of solutions due to the appearance of strong boundary layers. Consequently, our results show that the deformation gradient can prevent the formation of strong boundary layers. On the other hand, these results also provide two different kinds of suitable boundary conditions for the well-posedness of the initial-boundary value problem of the elastodynamic equations via the vanishing viscosity limit method. Finally, it is worth noting that we take advantage of the Lagrangian coordinates to study the vanishing viscosity limit for the fixed boundary problem in this paper.

This paper concerns the sharp interface limit of solutions to the inhomogeneous incompressible Navier-Stokes/Allen-Cahn coupled system in a bounded domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n,\ n =2,3$. Based on a relative energy method, we prove that the solutions to the Navier-Stokes/Allen-Cahn system converge to the corresponding solutions to a sharp interface model provided that the thickness of the diffuse interfacial zone goes to zero. It is noted that the relative energy method can avoid both the spectral estimates of the linearized Allen-Cahn operator and the construction of approximate solutions by the matched asymptotic expansion method in the study of the sharp interface limit process. And some suitable functionals are designed and estimated by elaborated energy methods accordingly.

Assessing causal effects in the presence of unmeasured confounding is a challenging problem. It has been previously shown that the causal effect is identifiable when noise variables of the treatment and outcome are both non-Gaussian under linear model setting with hidden variables. In this paper, we investigate the problem of identifying the causal effect using the auxiliary covariate and non-Gaussianity from the treatment. Our key idea is to characterize the impact of unmeasured confounders using an observed covariate, assuming they are all Gaussian. We demonstrate that the causal effect can be identified using a measured covariate, and then extend the identification results to the multi-treatment setting. We further develop a simple estimation procedure for calculating causal effects.

We use a deep neural network (DNN) with a ReLU activation function to model the generator and discriminator of the GAN. Theoretically, we derive a non-asymptotic error bound for the DNN-based MoM-GAN estimator measured by integral probability metrics with the $b$-smoothness Hölder class. The error bound decreases essentially as $n^{-b/p}\vee n^{-1/2}$, where $n$ and $p$ are the sample size and the dimension of input data. We give an algorithm for the MoM-GAN method and implement it through two real applications. The numerical results show that the MoM-GAN outperforms other competitive methods when dealing with contaminated data.

When the magnetic field is assumed to be transverse to the boundary and the tangential component of magnetic field satisfies zero Neumann boundary condition, even though the velocity is imposed the no-slip boundary condition, the uniform regularity estimates of solution and its derivatives still can be achieved in suitable conormal Sobolev spaces in the half plane $\mathbb{R}^2_+$, and then the vanishing viscosity limit is justified in $L^\infty$ sense based on these uniform regularity estimates and some compactness arguments. We study the sparse high-dimensional Gaussian mixture model when the number of clusters is allowed to grow with the sample size. A minimax lower bound for parameter estimation is established, and we show that a constrained maximum likelihood estimator achieves the minimax lower bound. However, this optimization-based estimator is computationally intractable because the objective function is highly nonconvex and the feasible set involves discrete structures. To address the computational challenge, we propose a Bayesian approach to estimate high-dimensional Gaussian mixtures whose cluster centers exhibit sparsity using a continuous spike-and-slab prior. Posterior inference can be efficiently computed using an easy-to-implement Gibbs sampler. We further prove that the posterior contraction rate of the proposed Bayesian method is minimax optimal. The mis-clustering rate is obtained as a by-product using tools from matrix perturbation theory. The proposed Bayesian sparse Gaussian mixture model does not require pre-specifying the number of clusters, which can be adaptively estimated via the Gibbs sampler. The validity and usefulness of the proposed method is demonstrated through simulation studies and the analysis of a real-world single-cell RNA sequencing dataset.

Spectral estimators have been broadly applied to statistical network analysis but they do not incorporate the likelihood information of the network sampling model. This paper proposes a novel surrogate likelihood function for statistical inference of a class of popular network models referred to as random dot product graphs. In contrast to the structurally complicated exact likelihood function, the surrogate likelihood function has a separable structure and is log-concave yet approximates the exact likelihood function well. From the frequentist perspective, we study the maximum surrogate likelihood estimator and establish the accompanying theory. We show its existence, uniqueness, large sample properties, and that it improves upon the baseline spectral estimator with a smaller sum of squared errors. A computationally convenient stochastic gradient descent algorithm is designed for finding the maximum surrogate likelihood estimator in practice. From the Bayesian perspective, we establish the Bernstein--von Mises theorem of the posterior distribution with the surrogate likelihood function and show that the resulting credible sets have the correct frequentist coverage. The empirical performance of the proposed surrogate-likelihood-based methods is validated through the analyses of simulation examples and a real-world Wikipedia graph dataset. Since statistical guarantees for neural networks are usually restricted to global optima of intricate objective functions, it is not clear whether these theories really explain the performances of actual outputs of neural-network pipelines. The goal of this paper is, therefore, to bring statistical theory closer to practice. We develop statistical guarantees for simple neural networks that coincide up to logarithmic factors with the global optima but apply to stationary points and the points nearby. These results support the common notion that neural networks do not necessarily need to be optimized globally from a mathematical perspective. More generally, despite being limited to simple neural networks for now, our theories make a step forward in describing the practical properties of neural networks in mathematical terms.

We are concerned with the sharp interface limit for an incompressible Navier-Stokes and Allen-Cahn coupled system in this paper. When the thickness of the diffuse interfacial zone, which is parameterized by $\varepsilon$, goes to zero, we prove that a solution of the incompressible Navier-Stokes and Allen-Cahn coupled system converges to a solution of a sharp interface model in the $L^\infty(L^2)\cap L^2(H^1)$ sense on a uniform time interval independent of the small parameter $\varepsilon$. The proof consists of two parts: one is the construction of a suitable approximate solution and another is the estimate of the error functions in Sobolev spaces. Besides the careful energy estimates, a spectral estimate of the linearized operator for the incompressible Navier-Stokes and Allen-Cahn coupled system around the approximate solution is essentially used to derive the uniform estimates of the error functions. The convergence of the velocity is well expected due to the fact that the layer of the velocity across the diffuse interfacial zone is relatively weak.

In this paper, we develop a generalized Bayesian inference framework for a collection of signal-plus-noise matrix models arising in high-dimensional statistics and many applications. The framework is built upon an asymptotically unbiased estimating equation with the assistance of the leading eigenvectors of the data matrix. The solution to the estimating equation coincides with the maximizer of an appropriate statistical criterion function. The generalized posterior distribution is constructed by replacing the usual log-likelihood function in the Bayes formula with the criterion function. The proposed framework does not require the complete specification of the sampling distribution and is convenient for uncertainty quantification via a Markov Chain Monte Carlo sampler, circumventing the inconvenience of resampling the data matrix. Under mild regularity conditions, we establish the large sample properties of the estimating equation estimator and the generalized posterior distributions. In particular, the generalized posterior credible sets have the correct frequentist nominal coverage probability provided that the so-called generalized information equality holds. The validity and usefulness of the proposed framework are demonstrated through the analysis of synthetic datasets and the real-world ENZYMES network datasets.

We establish a finite-sample Berry-Esseen theorem for the entrywise limits of the eigenvectors for a broad collection of signal-plus-noise random matrix models under challenging weak signal regimes. The signal strength is characterized by a scaling factor $ρ_n$ through $nρ_n$, where $n$ is the dimension of the random matrix, and we allow $nρ_n$ to grow at the rate of $\log n$. The key technical contribution is a sharp finite-sample entrywise eigenvector perturbation bound. The existing error bounds on the two-to-infinity norms of the higher-order remainders are not sufficient when $nρ_n$ is proportional to $\log n$. We apply the general entrywise eigenvector analysis results to the symmetric noisy matrix completion problem, random dot product graphs, and two subsequent inference tasks for random graphs: the estimation of pure nodes in mixed membership stochastic block models and the hypothesis testing of the equality of latent positions in random graphs.

The inviscid limit for the two-dimensional compressible viscoelastic equations on the half plane is considered under the no-slip boundary condition. When the initial deformation tensor is a perturbation of the identity matrix and the initial density is near a positive constant, we establish the uniform estimates of solutions to the compressible viscoelastic flows in the conormal Sobolev spaces. It is well-known that for the corresponding inviscid limit of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations with the no-slip boundary condition, one does not expect the uniform energy estimates of solutions due to the appearance of strong boundary layers. However, when the deformation tensor effect is taken into account, our results show that the deformation tensor plays an important role in the vanishing viscosity process and can prevent the formation of strong boundary layers. As a result we are able to justify the inviscid limit of solutions for the compressible viscous flows under the no-slip boundary condition governed by the viscoelastic equations, based on the uniform conormal regularity estimates achieved in this paper.

In this paper we are concerned with the global well-posedness of solutions to magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) boundary layer equations in analytic function spaces. When the initial data is a small perturbation around a selected profile, and such a profile is governed by an one dimensional heat equation with a source term, we establish the global in time existence and uniqueness of analytic solutions to the two dimensional (2D) MHD boundary layer equations. It is noted that the far-field state of velocity is not required to be small initially, but decays to zero as time tends to infinity with suitable decay rates. The whole analysis is divided into two parts: When the initial far-field states are not small, we reformulate the original problem into a small perturbation problem by extracting a suitable background profile which is governed by a heat equation, then we prove a long-time existence of solutions, and the lower bound of lifespan of solutions is given in term of the small parameter of initial perturbation; After establishing the long-time existence, combining the decay properties of far-field state and the properties of solutions to the heat equation, it is shown that both the solution obtained in the first part and the background profile indeed satisfy some smallness requirements when time goes to the lower bound of lifespan of solutions. Then we can show the global existence of solutions after this moment.

Low-rank matrices are pervasive throughout statistics, machine learning, signal processing, optimization, and applied mathematics. In this paper, we propose a novel and user-friendly Euclidean representation framework for low-rank matrices. Correspondingly, we establish a collection of technical and theoretical tools for analyzing the intrinsic perturbation of low-rank matrices in which the underlying referential matrix and the perturbed matrix both live on the same low-rank matrix manifold. Our analyses show that, locally around the referential matrix, the sine-theta distance between subspaces is equivalent to the Euclidean distance between two appropriately selected orthonormal basis, circumventing the orthogonal Procrustes analysis. We also establish the regularity of the proposed Euclidean representation function, which has a profound statistical impact and a meaningful geometric interpretation. These technical devices are applicable to a broad range of statistical problems. Specific applications considered in detail include Bayesian sparse spiked covariance model with non-intrinsic loss, efficient estimation in stochastic block models where the block probability matrix may be degenerate, and least-squares estimation in biclustering problems. Both the intrinsic perturbation analysis of low-rank matrices and the regularity theorem may be of independent interest.

Neural networks have become standard tools in the analysis of data, but they lack comprehensive mathematical theories. For example, there are very few statistical guarantees for learning neural networks from data, especially for classes of estimators that are used in practice or at least similar to such. In this paper, we develop a general statistical guarantee for estimators that consist of a least-squares term and a regularizer. We then exemplify this guarantee with $\ell_1$-regularization, showing that the corresponding prediction error increases at most sub-linearly in the number of layers and at most logarithmically in the total number of parameters. Our results establish a mathematical basis for regularized estimation of neural networks, and they deepen our mathematical understanding of neural networks and deep learning more generally.

In this paper, we are concerned with the magnetic effect on the Sobolev solvability of boundary layer equations for the 2D incompressible MHD system without resistivity. The MHD boundary layer is described by the Prandtl type equations derived from the incompressible viscous MHD system without resistivity under the no-slip boundary condition on the velocity. Assuming that the initial tangential magnetic field does not degenerate, a local-in-time well-posedness in Sobolev spaces is proved without the monotonicity condition on the velocity field. Moreover, we show that if the tangential magnetic field shear layer is degenerate at one point, then the linearized MHD boundary layer system around the shear layer profile is ill-posed in the Sobolev settings provided that the initial velocity shear flow is non-degenerately critical at the same point.

In this paper, we aim to give a theoretical approximation for the penalty level of $\ell_{1}$-regularization problems. This can save much time in practice compared with the traditional methods, such as cross-validation. To achieve this goal, we develop two Gaussian approximation methods, which are based on a moderate deviation theorem and Stein's method respectively. Both of them give efficient approximations and have good performances in simulations. We apply the two Gaussian approximation methods into three types of ultra-high dimensional $\ell_{1}$ penalized regressions: lasso, square-root lasso, and weighted $\ell_{1}$ penalized Poisson regression. The numerical results indicate that our two ways to estimate the penalty levels achieve high computational efficiency. Besides, our prediction errors outperform that based on the 10-fold cross-validation.

As a direct consequence, even though there exist strong boundary layers, the inviscid type limit is still established for the solutions of 2D steady viscous incompressible MHD equations in Sobolev spaces provided that the following three assumptions hold: the hydrodynamics and magnetic Reynolds numbers take the same order in term of the reciprocal of a small parameter $ε$, the tangential component of the magnetic field does not degenerate near the boundary and the ratio of the strength of tangential component of magnetic field and tangential component of velocity is suitably small. And the error terms are estimated in $L^\infty$ sense.

We introduce two methods for the construction of the decomposition. One is the moduli space approach following the work of Kuznetsov on the sextic del Pezzo fibrations and the components are given by the derived categories of fine relative moduli spaces. The other approach is that one can realize the fibration as a linear section of a Grassmannian bundle and apply Homological Projective Duality.

We propose a one-step procedure to estimate the latent positions in random dot product graphs efficiently. Unlike the classical spectral-based methods such as the adjacency and Laplacian spectral embedding, the proposed one-step procedure takes advantage of both the low-rank structure of the expected adjacency matrix and the Bernoulli likelihood information of the sampling model simultaneously. We show that for each vertex, the corresponding row of the one-step estimator converges to a multivariate normal distribution after proper scaling and centering up to an orthogonal transformation, with an efficient covariance matrix. The initial estimator for the one-step procedure needs to satisfy the so-called approximate linearization property. The one-step estimator improves the commonly-adopted spectral embedding methods in the following sense: Globally for all vertices, it yields an asymptotic sum of squares error no greater than those of the spectral methods, and locally for each vertex, the asymptotic covariance matrix of the corresponding row of the one-step estimator dominates those of the spectral embeddings in spectra. The usefulness of the proposed one-step procedure is demonstrated via numerical examples and the analysis of a real-world Wikipedia graph dataset.

We propose a Bayesian approach, called the posterior spectral embedding, for estimating the latent positions in random dot product graphs, and prove its optimality. Unlike the classical spectral-based adjacency/Laplacian spectral embedding, the posterior spectral embedding is a fully-likelihood based graph estimation method taking advantage of the Bernoulli likelihood information of the observed adjacency matrix. We develop a minimax-lower bound for estimating the latent positions, and show that the posterior spectral embedding achieves this lower bound since it both results in a minimax-optimal posterior contraction rate, and yields a point estimator achieving the minimax risk asymptotically. The convergence results are subsequently applied to clustering in stochastic block models, the result of which strengthens an existing result concerning the number of mis-clustered vertices. We also study a spectral-based Gaussian spectral embedding as a natural Bayesian analogy of the adjacency spectral embedding, but the resulting posterior contraction rate is sub-optimal with an extra logarithmic factor. The practical performance of the proposed methodology is illustrated through extensive synthetic examples and the analysis of a Wikipedia graph data.

We propose a Bayesian methodology for estimating spiked covariance matrices with jointly sparse structure in high dimensions. The spiked covariance matrix is reparametrized in terms of the latent factor model, where the loading matrix is equipped with a novel matrix spike-and-slab LASSO prior, which is a continuous shrinkage prior for modeling jointly sparse matrices. We establish the rate-optimal posterior contraction for the covariance matrix with respect to the operator norm as well as that for the principal subspace with respect to the projection operator norm loss. We also study the posterior contraction rate of the principal subspace with respect to the two-to-infinity norm loss, a novel loss function measuring the distance between subspaces that is able to capture element-wise eigenvector perturbations. We show that the posterior contraction rate with respect to the two-to-infinity norm loss is tighter than that with respect to the routinely used projection operator norm loss under certain low-rank and bounded coherence conditions. In addition, a point estimator for the principal subspace is proposed with the rate-optimal risk bound with respect to the projection operator norm loss. These results are based on a collection of concentration and large deviation inequalities for the matrix spike-and-slab LASSO prior. The numerical performance of the proposed methodology is assessed through synthetic examples and the analysis of a real-world face data example.

Model calibration or data inversion is one of fundamental tasks in uncertainty quantification. In this work, we study the theoretical properties of the scaled Gaussian stochastic process (S-GaSP), to model the discrepancy between reality and imperfect mathematical models. We establish the explicit connection between Gaussian stochastic process (GaSP) and S-GaSP through the orthogonal series representation. The predictive mean estimator in the S-GaSP calibration model converges to the reality at the same rate as the GaSP with a suitable choice of the regularization and scaling parameters. We also show the calibrated mathematical model in the S-GaSP calibration converges to the one that minimizes the $L_2$ loss between the reality and mathematical model, whereas the GaSP model with other widely used covariance functions does not have this property. Numerical examples confirm the excellent finite sample performance of our approaches compared to a few recent approaches.

We develop a Bayesian approach called Bayesian projected calibration to address the problem of calibrating an imperfect computer model using observational data from a complex physical system. The calibration parameter and the physical system are parametrized in an identifiable fashion via $L_2$-projection. The physical process is assigned a Gaussian process prior, which naturally induces a prior distribution on the calibration parameter through the $L_2$-projection constraint. The calibration parameter is estimated through its posterior distribution, which provides a natural and non-asymptotic way for the uncertainty quantification. We provide a rigorous large sample justification for the proposed approach by establishing the asymptotic normality of the posterior of the calibration parameter with the efficient covariance matrix. In addition, two efficient computational algorithms based on stochastic approximation are designed with theoretical guarantees. Through extensive simulation studies and two real-world datasets analyses, we show that the Bayesian projected calibration can accurately estimate the calibration parameters, appropriately calibrate the computer models, and compare favorably to alternative approaches.

By using the cancellation mechanism in the system observed in \cite{LXY1}, the lifespan of solution is shown to have a lower bound in the order of $\varepsilon^{-2+}$ if the strength of the perturbation is of the order of $\varepsilon$. Since there is no restriction on the strength of the shear flow and the lifespan estimate is larger than the one obtained for the classical Prandtl system in this setting, it reveals the stabilizing effect of the magnetic field on the electrically conducting fluid near the boundary.

We develop a unifying framework for Bayesian nonparametric regression to study the rates of contraction with respect to the integrated $L_2$-distance without assuming the regression function space to be uniformly bounded. The framework is very flexible and can be applied to a wide class of nonparametric prior models. Three non-trivial applications of the proposed framework are provided: The finite random series regression of an $α$-Hölder function, with adaptive rates of contraction up to a logarithmic factor; The un-modified block prior regression of an $α$-Sobolev function, with adaptive-and-exact rates of contraction; The Gaussian spline regression of an $α$-Hölder function, with the near-optimal posterior contraction. These applications serve as generalization or complement of their respective results in the literature. Extensions to the fixed-design regression problem and sparse additive models in high dimensions are discussed as well.

We propose a kernel mixture of polynomials prior for Bayesian nonparametric regression. The regression function is modeled by local averages of polynomials with kernel mixture weights. We obtain the minimax-optimal rate of contraction of the full posterior distribution up to a logarithmic factor that adapts to the smoothness level of the true function by estimating metric entropies of certain function classes. We also provide a frequentist sieve maximum likelihood estimator with a near-optimal convergence rate. We further investigate the application of the kernel mixture of polynomials to the partial linear model and obtain both the near-optimal rate of contraction for the nonparametric component and the Bernstein-von Mises limit (i.e., asymptotic normality) of the parametric component. The proposed method is illustrated with numerical examples and shows superior performance in terms of computational efficiency, accuracy, and uncertainty quantification compared to the local polynomial regression, DiceKriging, and the robust Gaussian stochastic process.

We study the well-posedness theory for the MHD boundary layer. The boundary layer equations are governed by the Prandtl type equations that are derived from the incompressible MHD system with non-slip boundary condition on the velocity and perfectly conducting condition on the magnetic field. Under the assumption that the initial tangential magnetic field is not zero, we establish the local-in-time existence, uniqueness of solution for the nonlinear MHD boundary layer equations. Compared with the well-posedness theory of the classical Prandtl equations for which the monotonicity condition of the tangential velocity plays a crucial role, this monotonicity condition is not needed for MHD boundary layer. This justifies the physical understanding that the magnetic field has a stabilizing effect on MHD boundary layer in rigorous mathematics.

The colourful simplicial depth problem in dimension d is to find a configuration of (d+1) sets of (d+1) points such that the origin is contained in the convex hull of each set (colour) but contained in a minimal number of colourful simplices generated by taking one point from each set. A construction attaining d^2+1 simplices is known, and is conjectured to be minimal. This has been confirmed up to d=3, however the best known lower bound for d at least 4 is ((d+1)^2)/2.
A promising method to improve this lower bound is to look at combinatorial octahedral systems generated by such configurations. The difficulty to employing this approach is handling the many symmetric configurations that arise. We propose a table of invariants which exclude many of partial configurations, and use this to improve the lower bound in dimension 4.

Abstract:
The largest possible average diameter of a bounded cell of a simple hyperplane arrangement is conjectured to be not greater than the dimension. We prove that this conjecture holds in dimension 2, and is asymptotically tight in fixed dimension. We give the exact value of the largest possible average diameter for all simple arrangements in dimension 2, for arrangements having at most the dimension…

The largest possible average diameter of a bounded cell of a simple hyperplane arrangement is conjectured to be not greater than the dimension. We prove that this conjecture holds in dimension 2, and is asymptotically tight in fixed dimension. We give the exact value of the largest possible average diameter for all simple arrangements in dimension 2, for arrangements having at most the dimension plus 2 hyperplanes, and for arrangements having 6 hyperplanes in dimension 3. In dimension 3, we give lower and upper bounds which are both asymptotically equal to the dimension.
