The pair $(E,G)$ is called a supersingular elliptic curve with level-$c$ structure, and the endomorphism ring $\text{End}(E,G)$ is isomorphic to an Eichler order with level $c$. We construct two kinds of Eichler orders $\mathcal{O}_c(q,r)$ and $\mathcal{O}'_c(q,r')$ with level $c$. Interestingly, we can reduce each $\mathcal{O}_c(q,r)$ or $\mathcal{O}'_c(q,r')$ to a primitive reduced binary quadratic form with discriminant $-16cp$ or $-cp$ respectively. If the curve $E$ is $\mathbb{Z}[\sqrt{-cp}]$-oriented, then we prove that $\text{End}(E,G)$ is isomorphic to $\mathcal{O}_c(q,r)$ or $\mathcal{O}'_c(q,r')$. Due to the fact that $\mathbb{Z}[\sqrt{-cp}]$-oriented isogenies between $\mathbb{Z}[\sqrt{-cp}]$-oriented elliptic curves could be represented by quadratic forms, we show that these isogenies are reflected in the corresponding Eichler orders via the composition law for their corresponding quadratic forms.

Parametric optimal control problems governed by partial differential equations (PDEs) are widely found in scientific and engineering applications. Traditional grid-based numerical methods for such problems generally require repeated solutions of PDEs with different parameter settings, which is computationally prohibitive especially for problems with high-dimensional parameter spaces. Although recently proposed neural network methods make it possible to obtain the optimal solutions simultaneously for different parameters, challenges still remain when dealing with problems with complex constraints. In this paper, we propose AONN, an adjoint-oriented neural network method, to overcome the limitations of existing approaches in solving parametric optimal control problems. In AONN, the neural networks are served as parametric surrogate models for the control, adjoint and state functions to get the optimal solutions all at once. In order to reduce the training difficulty and handle complex constraints, we introduce an iterative training framework inspired by the classical direct-adjoint loo** (DAL) method so that penalty terms arising from the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) system can be avoided. Once the training is done, parameter-specific optimal solutions can be quickly computed through the forward propagation of the neural networks, which may be further used for analyzing the parametric properties of the optimal solutions. The validity and efficiency of AONN is demonstrated through a series of numerical experiments with problems involving various types of parameters.

It is well known that there is a one-to-one correspondence between supersingular $j$-invariants up to the action of $\text{Gal}(\mathbb{F}_{p^2}/\mathbb{F}_p)$ and type classes of maximal orders in $B_{p,\infty}$ by Deuring's theorem. Interestingly, we establish a one-to-one correspondence between $\mathbb{F}_p$-isomorphism classes of supersingular elliptic curves and primitive reduced binary quadratic forms with discriminant $-p$ or $-16p$. Due to this correspondence and the fact that $\mathbb{F}_p$-isogenies between elliptic curves could be represented by quadratic forms, we show that operations of these isogenies on supersingular elliptic curves over $\mathbb{F}_p$ are compatible with the composition of quadratic forms. Based on these results, we could reduce the security of CSIDH cryptosystem to computing this correspondence explicitly.

Nonnegative matrix factorization arises widely in machine learning and data analysis. In this paper, for a given factorization of rank r, we consider the sparse stochastic matrix factorization (SSMF) of decomposing a prescribed m-by-n stochastic matrix V into a product of an m-by-r stochastic matrix W and an r-by-n stochastic matrix H, where both W and H are required to be sparse. With the prescribed sparsity level, we reformulate the SSMF as an unconstrained nonconvex-nonsmooth minimization problem and introduce a column-wise update algorithm for solving the minimization problem. We show that our algorithm converges globally. The main advantage of our algorithm is that the generated sequence converges to a special critical point of the cost function, which is nearly a global minimizer over each column vector of the W-factor and is a global minimizer over the H-factor as a whole if there is no sparsity requirement on H. Numerical experiments on both synthetic and real data sets are given to demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed algorithm.

In the second part of the series papers, we set out to study the algorithmic efficiency of sparse sensing. Stemmed from co-prime sensing, we propose a generalized framework, termed Diophantine sensing, which utilizes generic Diophantine equation theory and higher-order sparse ruler to strengthen the sampling time, the degree of freedom (DoF), and the sampling sparsity, simultaneously. Resorting to higher-moment statistics, the proposed Diophantine framework presents two fundamental improvements. First, on frequency estimation, we prove that given arbitrarily large down-sampling rates, there exist sampling schemes where the number of samples needed is only proportional to the sum of DoF and the number of snapshots required, which implies a linear sampling time. Second, on Direction-of-arrival (DoA) estimation, we propose two generic array constructions such that given N sensors, the minimal distance between sensors can be as large as a polynomial of N, O(N^q), which indicates that an arbitrarily sparse array (with arbitrarily small mutual coupling) exists given sufficiently many sensors. In addition, asymptotically, the proposed array configurations produce the best known DoF bound compared to existing sparse array designs.

Due to the probabilistic simplex constraint, one could not apply the L1 regularization to the considered regression model. To find a sparse solution, we reformulate the least squares regression problem as a nonconvex and nonsmooth L1 regularized minimization problem over the unit sphere. Then we propose a geometric proximal gradient method for solving the regularized problem, where the explicit expression of the global solution to every involved subproblem is obtained. The global convergence of the proposed method is established under some mild assumptions. Some numerical results are reported to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Generalized Chinese Remainder Theorem (CRT) is a well-known approach to solve ambiguity resolution related problems. In this paper, we study the robust CRT reconstruction for multiple numbers from a view of statistics. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first rigorous analysis on the underlying statistical model of CRT-based multiple parameter estimation. To address the problem, two novel approaches are established. One is to directly calculate a conditional maximum a posteriori probability (MAP) estimation of the residue clustering, and the other is based on a generalized wrapped Gaussian mixture model to iteratively search for MAP of both estimands and clustering. Residue error correcting codes are introduced to improve the robustness further. Experimental results show that the statistical schemes achieve much stronger robustness compared to state-of-the-art deterministic schemes, especially in heavy-noise scenarios.

With a careful design of sample spacings either in temporal and spatial domain, co-prime sensing can reconstruct the autocorrelation at a significantly denser set of points based on Bazout theorem. However, still restricted from Bazout theorem, it is required O(M1 + M2) samples to estimate frequencies in the case of co-prime sampling, where M1 and M2 are co-prime down-sampling rates. Besides, for Direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation, the sensors can not be arbitrarily sparse in co-prime arrays. In this letter, we restrain our focus on complex waveforms and present a framework under multiple samplers/sensors for both frequency and DOA estimation based on Diophantine equation, which is essentially to estimate the autocorrelation with higher order statistics instead of the second order one. We prove that, given arbitrarily high down-sampling rates, there exist sampling schemes with samples to estimate autocorrelation only proportional to the sum of degrees of freedom (DOF) and the number of snapshots required. In the scenario of DOA estimation, we show there exist arrays of N sensors with O(N^3) DOF and O(N) minimal distance between sensors.

Power system blackouts are usually triggered by the initial contingency and then deteriorate as the branch outage spreads quickly. Thus, it is crucial to eliminate the propagation of cascading outages in its infancy. In this paper, a model predictive approach is proposed to protect power grids against cascading blackout by timely shedding load on buses. The cascading dynamics of power grids is described by a cascading outage model of transmission lines coupled with the DC power flow equation. In addition, a nonlinear convex optimization formulation is established to characterize the optimal load shedding for the mitigation of cascading failures. As a result, two protection schemes are designed on the basis of the optimization formulation. One scheme carries out the remedial action once for all, while the other focuses on the consecutive protection measures. Saddle point dynamics is employed to provide a numerical solution to the proposed optimization problem, and its global convergence is guaranteed in theory. Finally, numerical simulations on IEEE 57 Bus Systems have been implemented to validate the proposed approach in terms of preventing the degradation of power grids.

Specifically, these models are different in characterizing the physical properties of power networks and computing the branch power flow. Optimal control approach is applied on these models to identify the critical disturbances that result in the worst-case cascading failures of power networks. Then we compare these models by analyzing the critical disturbances and cascading processes. Significantly, comparison results on IEEE 9 bus system demonstrate that physical and electrical properties of power networks play a crucial role in the evolution of cascading failures, and it is necessary to take into account these properties appropriately while applying the model in the analysis of cascading blackout.

We study the problem of identifying a single infection source in a network under the susceptible-infected-recovered-infected (SIRI) model. We describe the infection model via a state-space model, and utilizing a state propagation approach, we derive an algorithm known as the heterogeneous infection spreading source (HISS) estimator, to infer the infection source. The HISS estimator uses the observations of node states at a particular time, where the elapsed time from the start of the infection is unknown. It is able to incorporate side information (if any) of the observed states of a subset of nodes at different times, and of the prior probability of each infected or recovered node to be the infection source. Simulation results suggest that the HISS estimator outperforms the dynamic message pass- ing and Jordan center estimators over a wide range of infection and reinfection rates.

Individuals accepting an idea may intentionally or unintentionally impose influences in a certain neighborhood area, making other individuals within the area less likely or even impossible to accept other competing ideas. Depending on whether such influences strictly prohibit neighborhood individuals from accepting other ideas or not, we classify them into exclusive and non-exclusive influences, respectively. Our study reveals for the first time the rich and complex dynamics of two competing ideas with neighborhood influences in scale-free social networks: depending on whether they have exclusive or non-exclusive influences, the final state varies from multiple coexistence to founder control to exclusion, with different sizes of population accepting each of the ideas respectively. Such results provide insights helpful for better understanding the spread (and the control of spread) of ideas in human society.

In a recent paper \cite{Zhang-Xiao}, Zhang and Xiao describe a technique on constructing almost optimal resilient functions on even number of variables. In this paper, we will present an extensive study of the constructions of almost optimal resilient functions by using the generalized Maiorana-McFarland (GMM) construction technique. It is shown that for any given $m$, it is possible to construct infinitely many $n$-variable ($n$ even), $m$-resilient Boolean functions with nonlinearity equal to $2^{n-1}-2^{n/2-1}-2^{k-1}$ where $k<n/2$. A generalized version of GMM construction is further described to obtain almost optimal resilient functions with higher nonlinearity. We then modify the GMM construction slightly to make the constructed functions satisfying strict avalanche criterion (SAC). Furthermore we can obtain infinitely many new resilient functions with nonlinearity $>2^{n-2}-2^{(n-1)/2}$ ($n$ odd) by using Patterson-Wiedemann functions or Kavut-Y$\ddot{u}$cel functions. Finally, we provide a GMM construction technique for multiple-output almost optimal $m$-resilient functions $F: \mathbb{F}_2^n\mapsto \mathbb{F}_2^r$ ($n$ even) with nonlinearity $>2^{n-1}-2^{n/2}$. Using the methods proposed in this paper, a large class of previously unknown cryptographic resilient functions are obtained.
