We propose a method for extracting the Higgs and Coulomb branches of a three-dimensional N = 4 quantum field theory from the algebra of local operators in its holomorphic-topological twist using the formalism of raviolo vertex algebras. We classify all single-trace quarter-BPS operators in the planar approximation for $SU(N)$ gauge theory and propose a holographic dual description for the twisted theory. We classify perturbative quarter-BPS operators in $SU(2)$ and $SU(3)$ gauge theories with sufficiently small quantum numbers and discuss possible non-perturbative corrections to the answer. We construct a fully interacting holomorphic/topological theory in eleven dimensions that is defined on products of Calabi-Yau fivefolds with real one-manifolds. The theory describes a particular deformation of the cotangent bundle to the moduli space of Calabi-Yau structures on the fivefold. Its field content matches the holomorphic (or minimal) twist of the eleven-dimensional supergravity multiplet recently computed by the second two authors, and we offer numerous consistency checks showing that the interactions correctly describe interacting twisted eleven-dimensional supergravity at the perturbative level. We prove that the global symmetry algebra of our model on flat space is an $L_\infty$ central extension of the infinite-dimensional simple exceptional super Lie algebra $E(5,10)$, following a recent suggestion of Cederwall in the context of the relevant pure spinor model. Twists of superconformal algebras map to the fields of our model on the complement of a stack of M2 or M5 branes, laying the groundwork for a fully holomorphic version of twisted holography in this context.

To set the stage, we review the notion of a multiplet for a general super Lie algebra, working in the context of the BV and BRST formalisms. Building on this, we explain how the pure spinor superfield formalism can be viewed as constructing a supermultiplet out of the input datum of an equivariant graded module over the ring of functions on the nilpotence variety. We use the homotopy transfer theorem and other computational techniques from homological algebra to relate these multiplets to more standard component-field formulations. Physical properties of the resulting multiplets can then be understood in terms of algebrogeometric properties of the nilpotence variety. We illustrate our discussion with many examples in various dimensions.

We pursue a uniform quantization of all twists of 4-dimensional N = 4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory, using the BV formalism, and we explore consequences for factorization algebras of observables. Our central result is the construction of a one-loop exact quantization on $\mathbb R^4$ for all such twists and for every point in a moduli of vacua. When an action of the group SO(4) can be defined - for instance, for Kapustin and Witten's family of twists - the associated framing anomaly vanishes. It follows that the local observables in such theories can be canonically described by a family of framed $\mathbb E_4$ algebras; this structure allows one to take the factorization homology of observables on any oriented 4-manifold. In this way, each Kapustin-Witten theory yields a fully extended, oriented 4-dimensional topological field theory à la Lurie and Scheimbauer.

In both mathematics and physics, topological field theories and holomorphic field theories appear naturally, but there are interesting theories that are hybrids -- looking topological in some directions and holomorphic in others -- such as twists of supersymmetric field theories or Costello's 4-dimensional Chern--Simons theory. In this paper we construct perturbative, one-loop quantizations rigorously on the model manifold $\mathbb{R}^m \times \mathbb{C}^n$, and find a remarkable vanishing result about anomalies: the one-loop obstruction to quantization on $\mathbb{R}^m\times \mathbb{C}^n$ vanishes when $m\geq 1$. A concrete consequence of our results is the existence of exact and finite quantizations at one-loop for twists of pure $\mathcal{N} =2$ four-dimensional supersymmetric Yang--Mills theory.

We study twists of supergravity theories and supersymmetric field theories, using a version of the pure spinor superfield formalism. Our results show that, just as the component fields of supersymmetric multiplets are the vector bundles associated to the equivariant Koszul homology of the variety of square-zero elements in the supersymmetry algebra, the component fields of the holomorphic twists of the corresponding multiplets are the holomorphic vector bundles associated to the equivariant Koszul homology of square-zero elements in the twisted supersymmetry algebra. The BRST or BV differentials of the free multiplet are induced by the brackets of the corresponding super Lie algebra in each case. We make this precise in a variety of examples; applications include rigorous computations of the minimal twists of eleven-dimensional and type IIB supergravity, in the free perturbative limit. The latter result proves a conjecture by Costello and Li, relating the IIB multiplet directly to a presymplectic BV version of minimal BCOV theory.

We formulate the abelian six-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=(2,0)$ theory perturbatively, in a generalization of the Batalin-Vilkovisky formalism. Using this description, we compute the holomorphic and non-minimal twists at the perturbative level. This calculation hinges on the existence of an $L_\infty$ action of the supersymmetry algebra on the abelian tensor multiplet, which we describe in detail. Our formulation appears naturally in the pure spinor superfield formalism, but understanding it requires develo** a presymplectic generalization of the BV formalism, inspired by Dirac's theory of constraints. The holomorphic twist consists of symplectic-valued holomorphic bosons from the $\mathcal{N}=(1,0)$ hypermultiplet, together with a degenerate holomorphic theory of holomorphic coclosed one-forms from the $\mathcal{N}=(1,0)$ tensor multiplet, which can be interpreted as representing the intermediate Jacobian. We check that our formulation and our results match with known ones under various dimensional reductions, as well as comparing the holomorphic twist to Kodaira-Spencer theory. Matching our formalism to five-dimensional Yang-Mills theory after reduction leads to some issues related to electric-magnetic duality; we offer some speculation on a nonperturbative resolution.

We construct a class of quantum field theories depending on the data of a holomorphic Poisson structure on a piece of the underlying spacetime. The main technical tool relies on a characterization of deformations and anomalies of such theories in terms of the Gelfand-Fuchs cohomology of formal Hamiltonian vector fields. In the case that the Poisson structure is non-degenerate such theories are topological in a certain weak sense, which we refer to as "de Rham topological". While the Lie algebra of translations acts in a homotopically trivial way, we will show that the space of observables of such a theory does not define an E_n-algebra. Additionally, we will highlight a conjectural relationship to theories of supergravity in four and five dimensions.

We develop a method of quantization for free field theories on manifolds with boundary where the bulk theory is topological in the direction normal to the boundary and a local boundary condition is imposed. Our approach is within the Batalin-Vilkovisky formalism. At the level of observables, the construction produces a stratified factorization algebra that in the bulk recovers the factorization algebra developed by Costello and Gwilliam. The factorization algebra on the boundary stratum enjoys a perturbative bulk-boundary correspondence with this bulk factorization algebra. A central example is the factorization algebra version of the abelian Chern-Simons/Wess-Zumino-Witten correspondence, but we examine higher dimensional generalizations that are related to holomorphic truncations of string theory and $M$-theory and involve intermediate Jacobians.

We consider holomorphic twists of arbitrary supersymmetric theories in four dimensions. Working in the BV formalism, we rederive classical results characterizing the holomorphic twist of chiral and vector supermultiplets, computing the twist explicitly as a family over the space of nilpotent supercharges in minimal supersymmetry. The BV formalism allows one to work with or without auxiliary fields, according to preference; for chiral superfields, we show that the result of the twist is an identical BV theory, the holomorphic $βγ$ system with superpotential, independent of whether or not auxiliary fields are included. We compute the character of local operators in this holomorphic theory, demonstrating agreement of the free local operators with the usual index of free fields. The local operators with superpotential are computed via a spectral sequence, and are shown to agree with functions on a formal map** space into the derived critical locus of the superpotential. We consider the holomorphic theory on various geometries, including Hopf manifolds and products of arbitrary pairs of Riemann surfaces, and offer some general remarks on dimensional reductions of holomorphic theories along the $(n-1)$-sphere to topological quantum mechanics. We also study an infinite-dimensional enhancement of the flavor symmetry in this example, to a recently-studied central extension of the derived holomorphic functions with values in the original Lie algebra that generalizes the familiar Kac--Moody enhancement in two-dimensional chiral theories.

We show that the local observables of the curved beta gamma system encode the sheaf of chiral differential operators using the machinery of the book "Factorization algebras in quantum field theory", by Kevin Costello and the second author, which combines renormalization, the Batalin-Vilkovisky formalism, and factorization algebras. Our approach is in the spirit of deformation quantization via Gelfand-Kazhdan formal geometry. We begin by constructing a quantization of the beta gamma system with an n-dimensional formal disk as the target. There is an obstruction to quantizing equivariantly with respect to the action of formal vector fields on the target disk, and it is naturally identified with the first Pontryagin class in Gelfand-Fuks cohomology. Any trivialization of the obstruction cocycle thus yields an equivariant quantization with respect to an extension of formal vector fields by the closed 2-forms on the disk. By results in the book listed above, we then naturally obtain a factorization algebra of quantum observables, which has an associated vertex algebra easily identified with the formal beta gamma vertex algebra. Next, we introduce a version of Gelfand-Kazhdan formal geometry suitable for factorization algebras, and we verify that for a complex manifold with trivialized first Pontryagin class, the associated factorization algebra recovers the vertex algebra of CDOs on the complex manifold.
