This paper is devoted to studying an infinite horizon stochastic recursive control problem with jumps, where infinite horizon stochastic differential equation and backward stochastic differential equation with jumps describe the state process and cost functional, respectively. For this, the first is to explore the wellposedness and regularity of these two equations in $L^p$-frameworks ($p\geq2$). By establishing the dynamic programming principle of the control problem, we relate the value function of the control problem with a kind of integral-partial differential equation of HJB type in the sense of viscosity solutions. On the other hand, stochastic verification theorems are also studied to provide the sufficient conditions to verify the optimality of given admissible controls. Such a study is carried out in the framework of classical solutions but also in that of viscosity solutions. By these research, we reveal several essential differences from the finite horizon problem.

In this work, we focus on an infinite horizon mean-field linear-quadratic stochastic control problem with jumps. Firstly, the infinite horizon linear mean-field stochastic differential equations and backward stochastic differential equations with jumps are studied to support the research of the control problem. The global integrability properties of their solution processes are studied by introducing a kind of so-called dissipation conditions suitable for the systems involving the mean-field terms and jumps. For the control problem, we conclude a sufficient and necessary condition of open-loop optimal control by the variational approach. Besides, a kind of infinite horizon fully coupled linear mean-field forward-backward stochastic differential equations with jumps is studied by using the method of continuation. Such a research makes the characterization of the open-loop optimal controls more straightforward and complete.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate general mean-field backward stochastic differential equations (MFBSDEs) in multi-dimension with diagonally quadratic generators $f(ω,t,y,z,μ)$, that is, the coefficients depend not only on the solution processes $(Y,Z)$, but also on their law $\mathbb{P}_{(Y,Z)}$, as well as have a diagonally quadratic growth in $Z$ and super-linear growth (or even a quadratic growth) in the law of $Z$ which is totally new. We start by establishing through a fixed point theorem the existence and the uniqueness of local solutions in the ``Markovian case'' $f(t,Y_{t},Z_{t},\mathbb{P}_{(Y_{t},Z_{t})})$ when the terminal value is bounded. Afterwards, global solutions are constructed by stitching local solutions. Finally, employing the $θ$-method, we explore the existence and the uniqueness of global solutions for diagonally quadratic mean-field BSDEs with convex generators, even in the case of unbounded terminal values that have exponential moments of all orders. These results are extended to a Volterra-type case where the coefficients can even be of quadratic growth with respect to the law of $Z$.

In the vision of urban air mobility, air transport systems serve the demands of urban communities by routing flight traffic in networks formed by vertiports and flight corridors. We develop a routing algorithm to ensure that the air traffic flow fairly serves the demand of multiple communities subject to stochastic network capacity constraints. This algorithm guarantees that the flight traffic volume allocated to different communities satisfies the \emph{alpha-fairness conditions}, a commonly used family of fairness conditions in resource allocation. It further ensures robust satisfaction of stochastic network capacity constraints by bounding the coherent risk measures of capacity violation. We prove that implementing the proposed algorithm is equivalent to solving a convex optimization problem. We demonstrate the proposed algorithm using a case study based on the city of Austin. Compared with one that maximizes the total served demands, the proposed algorithm promotes even distributions of served demands for different communities.

In this paper, we focus on the stochastic representation of a system of coupled Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman-Isaacs (HJB-Isaacs (HJBI), for short) equations which is in fact a system of coupled Isaacs' type integral-partial differential equation. For this, we introduce an associated zero-sum stochastic differential game, where the state process is described by a classical stochastic differential equation (SDE, for short) with jumps, and the cost functional of recursive type is defined by a new type of backward stochastic differential equation (BSDE, for short) with two Poisson random measures, whose wellposedness and a prior estimate as well as the comparison theorem are investigated for the first time. One of the Poisson random measures appearing in the SDE and the BSDE stems from the integral term of the HJBI equations; the other random measure in BSDE is introduced to link the coupling factor of the HJBI equations. We show through an extension of the dynamic programming principle that the lower value function of this game problem is the viscosity solution of the system of our coupled HJBI equations. The uniqueness of the viscosity solution is also obtained in a space of continuous functions satisfying certain growth condition. In addition, also the upper value function of the game is shown to be the solution of the associated system of coupled Issacs' type of integral-partial differential equations. As a byproduct, we obtain the existence of the value for the game problem under the well-known Isaacs' condition.

Urban air mobility (UAM), as envisioned by aviation professionals, will transport passengers and cargo at low altitudes within urban and suburban areas. To operate in urban environments, precise air traffic management, in particular the management of traffic overflows due to physical and operational disruptions will be critical to ensuring system safety and efficiency. To this end, we propose UAM network design with reserve capacity, i.e., a design where alternative landing options and flight corridors are explicitly considered as a means of improving contingency management. Similar redundancy considerations are incorporated in the design of many critical infrastructures, yet remain unexploited in the air transportation literature. In our methodology, we first model how disruptions to a given UAM network might impact on the nominal traffic flow and how this flow might be re-accommodated on an extended network with reserve capacity. Then, through an optimization problem, we select the locations and capacities for the backup vertiports with the maximal expected throughput of the extended network over all possible disruption scenarios, while the throughput is the maximal amount of flights that the network can accommodate per unit of time. We show that we can obtain the solution for the corresponding bi-level and bi-linear optimization problem by solving a mixed-integer linear program. We demonstrate our methodology in the case study using networks from Milwaukee, Atlanta, and Dallas--Fort Worth metropolitan areas and show how the throughput and flexibility of the UAM networks with reserve capacity can outcompete those without.

When the escaper runs along a planar closed curve, we associate to the reduced shadowing equations the rotation number, and show that it depends only on the geometry of the esca** curve. Two notions called the critical shadowing distance and turning shadowing distance are introduced to characterize different dynamical behaviors. We show that a planar closed esca** curve could have shadowing curves of different types including periodic, subharmonic and ergodic ones, depending on the shadowing distance. Singularities of cusp type are found when the shadowing distance is large. Shadowing curves to an esca** circle are examined in details analytically and numerically. Approximate joint diagonalization of a set of matrices provides a powerful framework for numerous statistical signal processing applications. For non-unitary joint diagonalization (NUJD) based on the least-squares (LS) criterion, outliers, also referred to as anomaly or discordant observations, have a negative influence on the performance, since squaring the residuals magnifies the effects of them. To solve this problem, we propose a novel cost function that incorporates the soft decision-directed scheme into the least-squares algorithm and develops an efficient algorithm. The influence of the outliers is mitigated by applying decision-directed weights which are associated with the residual error at each iterative step. Specifically, the mixing matrix is estimated by a modified stationary point method, in which the updating direction is determined based on the linear approximation to the gradient function. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm outperforms conventional non-unitary diagonalization algorithms in terms of both convergence performance and robustness to outliers.

This paper studies the problem of scheduling urban air mobility trips when travel times are uncertain and capacity at destinations is limited. Urban air mobility, in which air transportation is used for relatively short trips within a city or region, is emerging as a possible component in future transportation networks. Destinations in urban air mobility networks, called vertiports or vertistops, typically have limited landing capacity, and, for safety, it must be guaranteed that an air vehicle will be able to land before it can be allowed to take off. We first present a tractable model of urban air mobility networks that accounts for limited landing capacity and uncertain travel times between destinations with lower and upper travel time bounds. We then establish theoretical bounds on the achievable throughput of the network. Next, we present a tractable algorithm for scheduling trips to satisfy safety constraints and arrival deadlines. The algorithm allows for dynamically updating the schedule to accommodate, e.g., new demands over time. The paper concludes with case studies that demonstrate the algorithm on two networks.

Constant nonhomogeneous terms, not all zero, appear in the state equation, which lead to the asymptotic limit of the state non-zero. Under the stabilizability condition, for any (admissible) closed-loop strategy, an invariant measure is proved to exist, which makes the ergodic cost functional well-defined and the EC problem well-formulated. Sufficient conditions, including those allowing the weighting matrices of cost functional to be indefinite, are introduced for finiteness and solvability for the EC problem. Some comparisons are made between the solvability of EC problem and the closed-loop solvability of stochastic linear quadratic optimal control problem in the infinite horizon. Regularized EC problem is introduced to be used to obtain the optimal value of the EC problem.

An optimal control problem is considered for linear stochastic differential equations with quadratic cost functional. The coefficients of the state equation and the weights in the cost functional are bounded operators on the spaces of square integrable random variables. The main motivation of our study is linear quadratic optimal control problems for mean-field stochastic differential equations. Open-loop solvability of the problem is investigated, which is characterized as the solvability of a system of linear coupled forward-backward stochastic differential equations (FBSDE, for short) with operator coefficients. Under proper conditions, the well-posedness of such an FBSDE is established, which leads to the existence of an open-loop optimal control. Finally, as an application of our main results, a general mean-field linear quadratic control problem in the open-loop case is solved.

Based on these $2\times 10^7$ samples, the empirical probabilities of $μ(n)$ of taking $-1$, 0, and 1 in classic statistics are calculated and compared with the theoretical probabilities in number theory. The numerical consistency between these two kinds of probability show that $μ(n)$ could be seen as an independent random sequence when $n$ is large. The expectation and variance of the $μ(n)$ are $0$ and $6 n/ π^2$, respectively. Furthermore, we show that any conjecture of the Mertens type is false in probability sense, and present an upper bound for cumulative sums of $μ(n)$ with a certain probability.

Abstract:
We show that any sufficiently (finitely) smooth $\mathbb Z_2$-symmetric strictly convex domain sufficiently close to a circle is dynamically spectrally rigid, i.e. all deformations among domains in the same class which preserve the length of all periodic orbits of the associated billiard flow must necessarily be isometric deformations. This gives a partial answer to a question of P. Sarnak.

Signals are generally modeled as a superposition of exponential functions in spectroscopy of chemistry, biology and medical imaging. For fast data acquisition or other inevitable reasons, however, only a small amount of samples may be acquired and thus how to recover the full signal becomes an active research topic. But existing approaches can not efficiently recover $N$-dimensional exponential signals with $N\geq 3$. In this paper, we study the problem of recovering N-dimensional (particularly $N\geq 3$) exponential signals from partial observations, and formulate this problem as a low-rank tensor completion problem with exponential factor vectors. The full signal is reconstructed by simultaneously exploiting the CANDECOMP/PARAFAC structure and the exponential structure of the associated factor vectors. The latter is promoted by minimizing an objective function involving the nuclear norm of Hankel matrices. Experimental results on simulated and real magnetic resonance spectroscopy data show that the proposed approach can successfully recover full signals from very limited samples and is robust to the estimated tensor rank.

This paper deals with the unconstrained and constrained cases for continuous-time Markov decision processes under the finite-horizon expected total cost criterion. The state space is denumerable and the transition and cost rates are allowed to be unbounded from above and from below. We give conditions for the existence of optimal policies in the class of all randomized history-dependent policies. For the unconstrained case, using the analogue of the forward Kolmogorov equation in the form of conditional expectation, we show that the finite-horizon optimal value function is the unique solution to the optimality equation and obtain the existence of an optimal deterministic Markov policy. For the constrained case, employing the technique of occupation measures, we first give an equivalent characterization of the occupation measures, and derive that for each occupation measure generated by a randomized history-dependent policy, there exists an occupation measure generated by a randomized Markov policy equal to it. Then using the compactness and convexity of the set of all occupation measures, we obtain the existence of a constrained-optimal randomized Markov policy. Moreover, the constrained optimization problem is reformulated as a linear program, and the strong duality between the linear program and its dual program is established. Finally, a controlled birth and death system is used to illustrate our main results.

We demonstrate on a case study with two competing products at a bank how one can use a Hidden Markov Chain (HMC) to estimate missing information on a competitor's marketing activity. The idea is that given time series with sales volumes for products A and B and marketing expenditures for product A, as well as suitable predictors of sales for products A and B, we can infer at each point in time whether it is likely or not that marketing activities took place for product B. The method is successful in identifying the presence or absence of marketing activity for product B about 84% of the time. We allude to the issue of whether, if one can infer marketing activity about product B from knowledge of marketing activity for product A and of sales volumes of both products, the reverse might be possible and one might be able to impute marketing activity for product A from knowledge of that of product B. This leads to a concept of symmetric imputation of competing marketing activity. The exposition in this paper aims to be accessible and relevant to practitioners.

Abstract:
The viscosity solution of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation was constructed by an "iterated minimax" procedure. Using Dafermos' front tracking method, we give another proof of this construction in the case of Hamilton-Jacobi equations in one space dimension. This allows us to get a better understanding in this case of the singularities of the viscosity solution.

Abstract:
For non convex Hamiltonians, the viscosity solution and the more geometric minimax solution of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation do not coincide in general. They are nevertheless related: we show that iterating the minimax procedure during shorter and shorter time intervals one recovers the viscosity solution.

For SDGs, the upper and the lower value functions are defined by the controlled fully coupled FBSDEs with jumps. Using a new transformation introduced in [6], we prove that the upper and the lower value functions are deterministic. Then, after establishing the dynamic programming principle for the upper and the lower value functions of this SDGs, we prove that the upper and the lower value functions are the viscosity solutions to the associated upper and the lower Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman-Isaacs (HJBI) equations, respectively. Furthermore, for a special case (when $σ,\ h$ do not depend on $y,\ z,\ k$), under the Isaacs' condition, we get the existence of the value of the game.

In this paper we study stochastic optimal control problems of fully coupled forward-backward stochastic differential equations (FBSDEs). The recursive cost functionals are defined by controlled fully coupled FBSDEs. We study two cases of diffusion coefficients $σ$ of FSDEs. We use a new method to prove that the value functions are deterministic, satisfy the dynamic programming principle (DPP), and are viscosity solutions to the associated generalized Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equations. The associated generalized HJB equations are related with algebraic equations when $σ$ depends on the second component of the solution $(Y, Z)$ of the BSDE and doesn't depend on the control. For this we adopt Peng's BSDE method, and so in particular, the notion of stochastic backward semigroup in [16]. We emphasize that the fact that $σ$ also depends on $Z$ makes the stochastic control much more complicate and has as consequence that the associated HJB equation is combined with an algebraic equation, which is inspired by Wu and Yu [19]. We use the continuation method combined with the fixed point theorem to prove that the algebraic equation has a unique solution, and moreover, we also give the representation for this solution. On the other hand, we prove some new basic estimates for fully coupled FBSDEs under the monotonic assumptions. In particular, we prove under the Lipschitz and linear growth conditions that fully coupled FBSDEs have a unique solution on the small time interval, if the Lipschitz constant of $σ$\ with respect to $z$ is sufficiently small. We also establish a generalized comparison theorem for such fully coupled FBSDEs.

Abstract:
This paper is devoted to the stochastic optimal control problems for systems governed by forward-backward stochastic Volterra integral equations (FBSVIEs, for short) with state constraints. Using Ekeland's variational principle, we obtain one kind of variational inequality. Then, by dual method, we derive a stochastic maximum principle which gives the necessary conditions for the optimal controls.

Abstract:
In this note, we show that the minmax and maxmin critical values of a function quadratic nondegenerate at infinity are equal when defined in homology or cohomology with coefficients in a field. However, by an example of F.Laudenbach, this is not always true for coefficients in a ring and, even in the case of a field, the minmax-maxmin depends on the field.
