In this paper, we prove that the $k$-matching polytope of a bipartite graph is normal, that is, every integer point in its $t$-dilate is the sum of $t$ integers points of the original polytope. This generalizes the known fact that Birkhoff polytopes are normal. As a preliminary result, we prove that for bipartite graphs the $k$-matching polytope is equal to the fractional $k$-matching polytope, having thus the $H$-representation of the polytope. This generalizes the Birkhoff-Von Neumann Theorem which establish that every doubly stochastic matrix can be written as a convex combination of permutation matrices.

We prove that this basic CrouzeixRaviart element for the Stokes equation is inf-sup stable for polynomial degree $k =2$ (quadratic velocity approximation). We identify spurious pressure modes for the conforming $(k; k - 1)$ 3D Stokes element and show that these are eliminated by using the basic Crouzeix-Raviart space.

The extension complexity of a polytope measures its amenability to succinct representations via lifts. There are several versions of extension complexity, including linear, real semidefinite, and complex semidefinite. We focus on the last of these, for which the least is known, and in particular on understanding which polytopes are complex psd-minimal. We prove the existence of an obstruction to complex psd-minimality which is efficiently computable via lattice membership problems. Using this tool, we complete the classification of complex psd-minimal polygons (geometrically as well as combinatorially). In dimension three we exhibit several new examples of complex psd-minimal polytopes and apply our obstruction to rule out many others.

We study the unique solvability of the discretized Helmholtz problem with Robin boundary conditions using a conforming Galerkin $hp$-finite element method. Well-posedness of the discrete equations is typically investigated by applying a compact perturbation to the continuous Helmholtz problem so that a "sufficiently rich" discretization results in a "sufficiently small" perturbation of the continuous problem and well-posedness is inherited via Fredholm's alternative. The qualitative notion "sufficiently rich", however, involves unknown constants and is only of asymptotic nature.
Our paper is focussed on a fully discrete approach by mimicking the tools for proving well-posedness of the continuous problem directly on the discrete level. In this way, a computable criterion is derived which certifies discrete well-posedness without relying on an asymptotic perturbation argument. By using this novel approach we obtain a) new stability results for the $hp$-FEM for the Helmholtz problem b) examples for meshes such that the discretization becomes unstable (stiffness matrix is singular), and c) a simple checking Algorithm MOTZ "marching-of-the-zeros" which guarantees in an a posteriori way that a given mesh is certified for a stable Helmholtz discretization.

A combinatorial polytope $P$ is said to be projectively unique if it has a single realization up to projective transformations. Projective uniqueness is a geometrically compelling property but is difficult to verify. In this paper, we merge two approaches to projective uniqueness in the literature. One is primarily geometric and is due to McMullen, who showed that certain natural operations on polytopes preserve projective uniqueness. The other is more algebraic and is due to Gouveia, Macchia, Thomas, and Wiebe. They use certain ideals associated to a polytope to verify a property called graphicality that implies projective uniqueness. In this paper, we show that that McMullen's operations preserve not only projective uniquness but also graphicality. As an application, we show that large families of order polytopes are graphic and thus projectively unique.

Assuming that $L(t)$ is a positive semi-definite symmetric matrix for all $t\in \mathbb{R}$, that is, $L(t)\equiv 0$ is allowed to occur in some finite interval $T$ of $\mathbb{R}$, $W(t,u)$ satisfies some superquadratic conditions weaker than Ambrosetti-Rabinowitz condition, we show that (FHS)$_λ$ has a solution which vanishes on $\mathbb{R}\setminus T$ as $λ\to \infty$, and converges to some $\tilde{u}\in H^α(\R, \R^n)$. Here, $\tilde{u}\in E_{0}^α$ is a solution of the Dirichlet BVP for fractional systems on the finite interval $T$. Our results are new and improve recent results in the literature even in the case $α=1$.

The goal of this paper is to investigate the stability of the Helmholtz equation in the high- frequency regime with non-smooth and rapidly oscillating coefficients on bounded domains. Existence and uniqueness of the problem can be proved using the unique continuation principle in Fredholm's alternative. However, this approach does not give directly a coefficient-explicit energy estimate. We present a new theoretical approach for the one-dimensional problem and find that for a new class of coefficients, including coefficients with an arbitrary number of discontinuities, the stability constant (i.e., the norm of the solution operator) is bounded by a term independent of the number of jumps. We emphasize that no periodicity of the coefficients is required. By selecting the wave speed function in a certain \resonant" way, we construct a class of oscillatory configurations, such that the stability constant grows exponentially in the frequency. This shows that our estimates are sharp.
