Gaussian beams and inverse problems for connections at high fixed frequency

Abstract:
We consider the inverse problem of recovering a connection on a complex vector bundle over a compact smooth Riemannian manifold with boundary from a Dirichlet-to-Neumann (DN) map at a high fixed frequency. We construct Gaussian beams using the language of jet bundles and show that their value at the boundary can be recovered from those DN maps. This allows us to show injectivity up to gauge on man…

This allows us to show injectivity up to gauge on manifolds whose non-abelian X-ray transform is injective. We also study DN maps with a cubic nonlinearity and show how to recover the broken non-abelian X-ray transform from them. This transform maps a connection to its parallel transport along broken geodesics with endpoints on the boundary. We show that the broken non-abelian X-ray transform is always injective up to gauge equivalence, regardless of the manifold's geometry.

We study inverse boundary problems for semilinear Schrödinger equations on smooth compact Riemannian manifolds of dimensions $\ge 2$ with smooth boundary, at a large fixed frequency. We show that certain classes of cubic nonlinearities are determined uniquely from the knowledge of the nonlinear Dirichlet--to--Neumann map at a large fixed frequency on quite general Riemannian manifolds. In particular, in contrast to the previous results available, here the manifolds need not satisfy any product structure, may have trapped geodesics, and the geodesic ray transform need not be injective. Only a mild assumption about the geometry of intersecting geodesics is required. We also establish a polynomial resolvent estimate for the Laplacian on an arbitrary smooth compact Riemannian manifold without boundary, valid for most frequencies. This estimate, along with the invariant construction of Gaussian beam quasimodes with uniform bounds for underlying constants and a stationary phase lemma with explicit control over all involved constants, constitutes the key elements in proving the uniqueness results for the considered inverse problems.

Stability estimate for the broken non-abelian X-ray transform in Minkowski space

Abstract:
We study the broken non-abelian X-ray transform in Minkowski space. This transform acts on the space of Hermitian connections on a causal diamond and is known to be injective up to an infinite-dimensional gauge. We show a stability estimate that takes into account the gauge, leading to a new proof of the transform's injectivity. Our proof leads us to consider a special type of connections that we…

Our proof leads us to consider a special type of connections that we call light-sink connections. We then show that we can consistently recover a light-sink connection from noisy measurement of its X-ray transform data through Bayesian inversion.

Abstract:
We investigate random compact sets with random functions defined thereon, such as polynomials, rational functions, the pluricomplex Green function and the Siciak extremal function. One surprising consequence of our study is that randomness can be used to `improve' convergence for sequences of functions.

We consider the three-dimensional sloshing problem on a triangular prism whose angles with the sloshing surface are of the form $\fracπ{2q}$, where $q$ is an integer. We consider the three-dimensional sloshing problem on a triangular prism whose angles with the sloshing surface are of the form $\fracπ{2q}$, where $q$ is an integer. We are interested in finding a two-term asymptotic expansion of the eigenvalue counting function. When both angles are $\fracπ{4}$, we compute the exact value of the second term. As for the general case, we conjecture an asymptotic expansion by constructing quasimodes for the problem and computing the counting function of the related quasi-eigenvalues. These quasimodes come from solutions of the slo** beach problem and correspond to two kinds of waves, edge waves and surface waves. We show that the quasi-eigenvalues are exponentially close to real eigenvalues of the sloshing problem. The asymptotic expansion of their counting function is closely related to a lattice counting problem inside a perturbed ellipse where the perturbation is in a sense random. The contribution of the angles can then be detected through that perturbation.

We obtain a complete asymptotic expansion for the eigenvalues of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann maps associated with Schrödinger operators on compact Riemannian surfaces with boundary. For the zero potential, we recover the well-known spectral asymptotics for the Steklov problem. For nonzero potentials, we obtain new geometric invariants determined by the spectrum of what we call the parametric Steklov problem. In particular, for constant potentials parametric Steklov problem, the total geodesic curvature on each connected component of the boundary is a spectral invariant. Under the constant curvature assumption, this allows us to obtain some interior information from the spectrum of these boundary operators.
