We consider Euler flows on two-dimensional (2D) periodic domain and are interested in the stability, both linear and nonlinear, of a simple equilibrium given by the 2D Taylor-Green vortex. As the first main result, numerical evidence is provided for the fact that such flows possess unstable eigenvalues embedded in the band of the essential spectrum of the linearized operator, which suggests that passage from linear to non-linear instability in the energy metric is likely for such flows. The latter is confirmed numerically as well by demonstrating exponential transient growth of the nonlinear dynamics with the rate given by the real part of the unstable eigenvalue. However, the unstable eigenfunction is a distribution, rather than a smooth function, and is unbounded in the neighbourhood of the hyperbolic stagnation points of the base flow. As the second main result, we illustrate a fundamentally different, nonmodal, growth mechanism involving a continuous family of uncorrelated functions, instead of an eigenfunction of the linearized operator. Constructed by solving a suitable PDE optimization problem, the resulting flows saturate the known estimates on the growth of the semigroup related to the essential spectrum of the linearized Euler operator as the numerical resolution is refined. These findings are contrasted with the results of earlier studies of a similar problem conducted in a slightly viscous setting where only the modal growth of instabilities was observed. This highlights the special stability properties of equilibria in inviscid flows.

We study a new flocking model which has the versatility to capture the physically realistic qualitative behavior of the Motsch-Tadmor model, while also retaining the entropy law, which lends to a similar 1D global well-posedness analysis to the Cucker-Smale model. This is an improvement to the situation in the Cucker-Smale case, which may display the physically unrealistic behavior that large flocks overpower the dynamics of small, far away flocks; and it is an improvement in the situation in the Motsch-Tadmor case, where 1D global well-posedness is not known. The new model was proposed in arXiv:2211.00117v3 and has a similar structure to the Cucker-Smale and Motsch-Tadmor hydrodynamic systems, but with a new feature: the communication strength is not fixed, but evolves in time according to its own transport equation along the Favre-filtered velocity field. This transport of the communication strength is precisely what preserves the entropy law. A variety of phenomenological behavior can be obtained from various choices of the initial communication strength, including the aforementioned Motsch-Tadmor-like behavior. We develop the general well-posedness theory for the new model and study the long time behavior -- including alignment, strong flocking in 1D, and entropy estimates to estimate the distribution of the limiting flock, all of which extend the classical results of the Cucker-Smale case. In addition, we provide numerical evidence to show the similar qualitative behavior

The generic alignment conjecture states that for almost every initial data on the torus solutions to the Cucker-Smale system under a strictly local communication rule align to the common mean velocity. In this note we present a partial resolution of this conjecture using a statistical mechanics approach. First, the conjecture holds in full for the sticky particle model representing, formally, infinitely strong local communication. In the classical case the conjecture is proved when $N$, the number of agents, is equal to $2$. It follows from a more general result stating that for a system of any size for almost every data at least two agents align.
The analysis is extended to the open space $\R^n$ in the presence of confinement and potential interaction forces. In particular, it is shown that almost every non-oscillatory pair of solutions aligns and aggregates in the potential well.

The model incorporates two forces -- alignment of opinions under all-to-all communication driving the system to a consensus, and Rayleigh type friction force that drives each `player' to its fixed conviction value. The balance between these forces creates a non-trivial limiting outcome.
We establish existence of a global mono-opinion state, whereby any initial distribution of opinions for each conviction value aggregates to the Dirac measure concentrated on a single opinion. We identify several cases where such a state is unique and depends continuously on the initial distribution of convictions. Several regularity properties of the limiting distribution of opinions are presented.

Those protocols can be viewed as special cases of `environmental averaging'. In this paper we formalize this concept and introduce a unified framework for systematic analysis of alignment models.
A series of studies are presented including the mean-field limit in deterministic and stochastic settings, hydrodynamic limits in the monokinetic and Maxwellian regimes, hypocoercivity and global relaxation for dissipative kinetic models, several general alignment results based on chain connectivity and spectral gap analysis. These studies cover many of the known results and reveal new ones, which include asymptotic alignment criteria based on connectivity conditions, new estimates on the spectral gap of the alignment force that do not rely on the upper bound of the macroscopic density, uniform gain of positivity for solutions of the Fokker-Planck-Alignment model based on smooth environmental averaging. As a consequence, we establish unconditional relaxation result for global solutions to the Fokker-Planck-Alignment model, which presents a substantial improvement over previously known perturbative results.

This study introduces a new family of volumetric flatness factors which give a rigorous parametric description of the phenomenon of intermittency in fully developed turbulent flows. These quantities gather information about the most "active" part of a velocity field at each scale $\ell$, and allows one to define a dimension function $p \to D_p$ that recovers intermittency correction to the structure exponents $ζ_p$ in an explicit way. In particular, the predictions of the Frisch-Parisi multifractal formalism can be recovered in a systematic and rigorous way.
Within this framework we identify active regions that carry the most energetic part of a velocity field at a given scale $\ell$. A threshold for what constitutes to be active is defined explicitly. Active regions have proven to be experimentally observable in our previous joint work \cite{Ph-paper}, and shown to capture concentration of the energy cascade as $\ell \to 0$, in \cite{CS2014}.
We present several examples of fields which exhibit arbitrary multifractal spectrum within theoretically permitted limitations. At the same time we demonstrate with the use of a probabilistic argument that a random field is expected to produce the classical K41 spectrum in the limit $\ell\to 0$. Intermittent deviations from K41 theory are estimated at any finite scale also.
Lastly, we present a detailed information-theoretic analysis of the introduced objects. In particular, we quantify concentration of a given source-field in terms of the volume factors, thresholds, and active regions.

In this work we study propagation of chaos for solutions of the Liouville equation for the classical discrete Cucker-Smale system. Assuming that the communication kernel satisfies the heavy tail condition -- known to be necessary to induce exponential alignment -- we obtain a linear in time convergence rate of the $k$-th marginals $f^{(k)}$ to the product of $k$ solutions of the corresponding Vlasov-Alignment equation, $f^{\otimes k}$. Specifically, the following estimate holds in terms of Wasserstein-2 metric \begin{equation}\label{e:abst}
\mathcal{W}_2(f^{(k)}_t,f^{\otimes k}_t) \leq C k^{1/2} \min\left\{ 1, \frac{t}{\sqrt{N}} \right\}. \end{equation} For systems with the Rayleigh-type friction and self-propulsion force, we obtain a similar result for sectorial solutions. Such solutions are known to align exponentially fast via the method of Grassmannian reduction, \cite{LRS-friction}. We recast the method in the kinetic settings and show that the bound \eqref{e:abst} persists but with the quadratic dependence on time.
In both the forceless and forced cases, the result represents an improvement over the exponential bounds established earlier in the work of Natalini and Paul, \cite{NP2021-orig}, although those bounds hold for general kernels. The main message of our work is that flocking dynamics improves the rate considerably.

In this note we establish hypocoercivity and exponential relaxation to the Maxwellian for a class of kinetic Fokker-Planck-Alignment equations arising in the studies of collective behavior. Unlike previously known results in this direction that focus on convergence near Maxwellian, our result is global for hydrodynamically dense flocks, which has several consequences. In particular, if communication is long-range, the convergence is unconditional. If communication is local then all nearly aligned flocks quantified by smallness of the Fisher information relax to the Maxwellian. In the latter case the class of initial data is stable under the vanishing noise limit, i.e.\ it reduces to a non-trivial and natural class of traveling wave solutions to the noiseless Vlasov-Alignment equation.
The main novelty in our approach is the adaptation of a mollified Favre filtration of the macroscopic momentum into the communication protocol. Such filtration has been used previously in large eddy simulations of compressible turbulence and its new variant appeared in the proof of the Onsager conjecture for inhomogeneous Navier-Stokes system. A rigorous treatment of well-posedness for smooth solutions is provided. Lastly, we prove that in the limit of strong noise and local alignment solutions to the Fokker-Planck-Alignment equation Maxwellialize to solutions of the macroscopic hydrodynamic system with the isothermal pressure.

We present a systematic approach to regularity theory of the multi-dimensional Euler alignment systems with topological diffusion introduced in \cite{STtopo}. While these systems exhibit flocking behavior emerging from purely local communication, bearing direct relevance to empirical field studies, global and even local well-posedness has proved to be a major challenge in multi-dimensional settings due to the presence of topological effects. In this paper we reveal two important classes of global smooth solutions -- parallel shear flocks with incompressible velocity and stationary density profile, and nearly aligned flocks with close to constant velocity field but arbitrary density distribution. Existence of such classes is established via an efficient continuation criterion requiring control only on the Lipschitz norm of state quantities, which makes it accessible to the applications of fractional parabolic theory. The criterion presents a major improvement over the existing result of \cite{RS2020}, and is proved with the use of quartic paraproduct estimates.

In this note we study a new class of alignment models with self-propulsion and Rayleigh-type friction forces, which describes the collective behavior of agents with individual characteristic parameters. We describe the long time dynamics via a new method which allows to reduce analysis from the multidimensional system to a simpler family of two-dimensional systems parametrized by a proper Grassmannian. With this method we demonstrate exponential alignment for a large (and sharp) class of initial velocity configurations confined to a sector of opening less than $π$.
In the case when characteristic parameters remain frozen, the system governs dynamics of opinions for a set of players with constant convictions. Viewed as a dynamical non-cooperative game, the system is shown to possess a unique stable Nash equilibrium, which represents a settlement of opinions most agreeable to all agents. Such an agreement is furthermore shown to be a global attractor for any set of initial opinions.

We study the limiting dynamics of the Euler Alignment system with a smooth, heavy-tailed interaction kernel $φ$ and unidirectional velocity $\mathbf{u} = (u, 0, \ldots, 0)$. We demonstrate a striking correspondence between the entropy function $e_0 = \partial_1 u_0 + φ*ρ_0$ and the limiting 'concentration set', i.e., the support of the singular part of the limiting density measure. In a typical scenario, a flock experiences aggregation toward a union of $C^1$ hypersurfaces: the image of the zero set of $e_0$ under the limiting flow map. This correspondence also allows us to make statements about the fine properties associated to the limiting dynamics, including a sharp upper bound on the dimension of the concentration set, depending only on the smoothness of $e_0$. In order to facilitate and contextualize our analysis of the limiting density measure, we also include an expository discussion of the wellposedness, flocking, and stability of the Euler Alignment system, most of which is new.

We study the multi-scale description of large-time collective behavior of agents driven by alignment. The resulting multi-flock dynamics arises naturally with realistic initial configurations consisting of multiple spatial scaling, which in turn peak at different time scales. We derive a `master-equation' which describes a complex multi-flock congregations governed by two ingredients: (i) a fast inner-flock communication; and (ii) a slow(-er) inter-flock communication. The latter is driven by macroscopic observables which feature the up-scaling of the problem. We extend the current mono-flock theory, proving a series of results which describe rates of multi-flocking with natural dependencies on communication strengths. Both agent-based, kinetic, and hydrodynamic descriptions are considered, with particular emphasis placed on the discrete and macroscopic descriptions.

Our approach is based on new sharp coercivity estimates for the topological alignment operator \[ \mathcal{L}_φf(x) = \int_{\mathbb{T}^n} φ(x,y) (f(y) - f(x) ) dy, \] which render proper a priori estimates and help stabilize viscous approximation of the system. This note introduces a new method for establishing alignment in systems of collective behavior with degenerate communication protocol. The communication protocol consists of a kernel defining interaction between pairs of agents. Degeneracy presumes that the kernel vanishes in a region, which creates a zone of indifference. A motivating example is the case of a local kernel. Lapses in communication create a lack of coercivity in the energy estimates. Our approach is the construction of a corrector functional that compensates for this lack of coercivity. We obtain a series of new results: unconditional alignment for systems on $\mathbb{R}^d$ with degeneracy at close range and fat tail in the long range, and for systems on the circle with purely local kernels. The results are proved in the context of both the agent based model and its hydrodynamic counterpart (Euler alignment model). The method covers bounded and singular communication kernels.

We introduce a new class of models for emergent dynamics. It is based on a new communication protocol which incorporates two main features: short-range kernels which restrict the communication to local geometric balls, and anisotropic communication kernels, adapted to the local density in these balls, which form topological neighborhoods. We prove flocking behavior -- the emergence of global alignment for regular, non-vacuous solutions of the $n$-dimensional models based on short-range topological communication. Moreover, global regularity (and hence unconditional flocking) of the one-dimensional model is proved via an application of a De Giorgi-type method. To handle the non-symmetric singular kernels that arise with our topological communication, we develop a new analysis for local fractional elliptic operators, interesting for its own sake, encountered in the construction of our class of models.

The Energy Measure for the Euler and Navier-Stokes Equations

Abstract:
The potential failure of energy equality for a solution $u$ of the Euler or Navier-Stokes equations can be quantified using a so-called `energy measure': the weak-$*$ limit of the measures $|u(t)|^2\,\mbox{d}x$ as $t$ approaches the first possible blowup time. We show that membership of $u$ in certain (weak or strong) $L^q L^p$ classes gives a uniform lower bound on the lower local dimension of $\mathcal{E}$; more precisely, it implies uniform boundedness of a certain upper $s$-density of $\mathcal{E}$. We also define and give lower bounds on the `concentration dimension' associated to $\mathcal{E}$, which is the Hausdorff dimension of the smallest set on which energy can concentrate. Both the lower local dimension and the concentration dimension of $\mathcal{E}$ measure the departure from energy equality. As an application of our estimates, we prove that any solution to the $3$-dimensional Navier-Stokes Equations which is Type-I in time must satisfy the energy equality at the first blowup time.

We continue our study of one-dimensional class of Euler equations, introduced in \cite{ST2016}, driven by a forcing with a commutator structure of the form $[\aL_φ,u](ρ)=φ*(ρu)- (φ*ρ)u$, where $u$ is the velocity field and $φ$ belongs to a rather general class of \emph{influence} or interaction kernels.
In this paper we quantify the large-time behavior of such systems in terms of \emph{fast flocking} for two prototypical sub-classes of kernels: bounded positive $φ$'s, and singular $φ(r) = r^{-(1+\a)}$ of order $α\in [1,2)$ associated with the action of the fractional Laplacian $\aL_φ=-(-\partial_{xx})^{α/2}$. Specifically, we prove fast velocity alignment as the velocity $u(\cdot,t)$ approaches a constant state, $u \to \bar{u}$, with exponentially decaying slope and curvature bounds $|u_x(\cdot,t)|_{\infty}+ |u_{xx}(\cdot,t)|_{\infty}\lesssim e^{-\d t}$. The alignment is accompanied by exponentially fast flocking of the density towards a fixed traveling state $ρ(\cdot,t) - {ρ_{\infty}}(x - \bar{u} t) \rightarrow 0$.

We study a general class of Euler equations driven by a forcing with a \emph{commutator structure} of the form $[\mathcal{L},\mathbf{u}](ρ)=\mathcal{L}(ρ\mathbf{u})- \mathcal{L}(ρ)\mathbf{u}$, where $\mathbf{u}$ is the velocity field and $\mathcal{L}$ is the "action" which belongs to a rather general class of translation invariant operators. Such systems arise, for example, as the hydrodynamic description of velocity alignment, where action involves convolutions with bounded, positive influence kernels, $\mathcal{L}_φ(f)=φ*f$. Our interest lies with a much larger class of $\mathcal{L}$'s which are neither bounded nor positive.
In this paper we develop a global regularity theory in the one-dimensional setting, considering three prototypical sub-classes of actions. We prove global regularity for \emph{bounded} $φ$'s which otherwise are allowed to change sign. Here we derive sharp critical thresholds such that sub-critical initial data $(ρ_0,u_0)$ give rise to global smooth solutions. Next, we study \emph{singular} actions associated with $\mathcal{L}=-(-\partial_{xx})^{α/2}$, which embed the fractional Burgers' equation of order $α$. We prove global regularity for $α\in [1,2)$. Interestingly, the singularity of the fractional kernel $|x|^{-(n+α)}$, avoids an initial threshold restriction. Global regularity of the critical endpoint $α=1$ follows with double-exponential $W^{1,\infty}$-bounds. Finally, for the other endpoint $α=2$, we prove the global regularity of the Navier-Stokes equations with density-dependent viscosity associated with the \emph{local} $\mathcal{L}=Δ$.

We study stationary homogeneous solutions to the 3D Euler equation. The problem is motivated be recent exclusions of self-similar blowup for Euler and its relation to Onsager conjecture and intermittency. We reveal several new classes of solutions and prove rigidity properties in specific categories of genuinely 3D solutions. In particular, irrotational solutions are characterized by vanishing of the Bernoulli function; and tangential flows are necessarily 2D axisymmetric pure rotations. In several cases solutions are excluded altogether. The arguments reveal geodesic features of the Euler flow on the sphere. We further show that in the case when homogeneity corresponds to the Onsager-critical state, the anomalous energy flux at the singularity vanishes, which is suggestive of absence of extreme $0$-dimensional intermittencies in dissipative flows.

We provide a direct argument, based on a mollification in physical space, to show that the energy of a weak solution is conserved if $ω= \nabla \times u \in L^{\frac32}$. An example of a 2D field in the class $ω\in L^{\frac32 - ε}$ for any $ε>0$, and $u\in B^{1/3}_{3,\infty}$ (Onsager critical space) is constructed with non-vanishing energy flux. This demonstrates sharpness of the kinematic argument. Finally we prove that any solution to the Euler equation produced via a vanishing viscosity limit from Navier-Stokes, with $ω\in L^p$, for $p>1$, conserves energy. This is an Onsager-supercritical condition under which the energy is still conserved, pointing to a new mechanism of energy balance restoration.

We consider the 2D Muskat equation for the interface between two constant density fluids in an incompressible porous medium, with velocity given by Darcy's law. We establish that as long as the slope of the interface between the two fluids remains bounded and uniformly continuous, the solution remains regular. The proofs exploit the nonlocal nonlinear parabolic nature of the equations through a series of nonlinear lower bounds for nonlocal operators. These are used to deduce that as long as the slope of the interface remains uniformly bounded, the curvature remains bounded. The nonlinear bounds then allow us to obtain local existence for arbitrarily large initial data in the class $W^{2,p}$, $1<p\leq \infty$. We provide furthermore a global regularity result for small initial data: if the initial slope of the interface is sufficiently small, there exists a unique solution for all time.

In other cases many new solutions are exhibited that have hyperbolic, parabolic and elliptic structure of streamlines. In particular, for $λ>9/2$ the number of different non-trivial elliptic solutions is equal to the cardinality of the set $(2,\sqrt{2λ}) \cap \mathbb{N}$. The case $λ= 2/3$ is relevant to Onsager's conjecture. We underline the reasons why no anomalous dissipation of energy occurs for such solutions despite their critical Besov regularity 1/3.

In this paper we introduce a new PDE model in frequency space for the inertial energy cascade that reproduces the classical scaling laws of Kolmogorov's theory of turbulence. Our point of view is based upon studying the energy flux through a continuous range of scales rather than the discrete set of dyadic scales. The resulting model is a variant of Burgers equation on the half line with a boundary condition which represents a constant energy input at integral scales. The viscous dissipation is modeled via a dam** term. We show existence of a unique stationary solution, both in the viscous and inviscid cases, which replicates the classical dissipation anomaly in the limit of vanishing viscosity.
A survey of recent developments in the deterministic approach to the laws of turbulence, and in particular, to Onsager's conjecture is given.

Motivated by Kolmogorov's theory of turbulence we present a unified approach to the regularity problems for the 3D Navier-Stokes and Euler equations. We introduce a dissipation wavenumber $Λ(t)$ that separates low modes where the Euler dynamics is predominant from the high modes where the viscous forces take over. Then using an indifferent to the viscosity technique we obtain a new regularity criterion which is weaker than every Ladyzhenskaya-Prodi-Serrin condition in the viscous case, and reduces to the Beale-Kato-Majda criterion in the inviscid case. In the viscous case we also we prove that Leray-Hopf solutions are regular provided $Λ\in L^{5/2}$, which improves our previous $Λ\in L^\infty$ condition. We also show that $Λ\in L^1$ for all Leray-Hopf solutions. Finally, we prove that Leray-Hopf solutions are regular when the time-averaged spatial intermittency is small, i.e., close to Kolmogorov's regime.

Our method uses frequency local estimates on the nonlinear term, and yields an extension of the classical Ladyzhenskaya-Prodi-Serrin criterion.

Cocycles and Mañe sequences with an application to ideal fluids
Authors:

Abstract:
Exponential dichotomy of a strongly continuous cocycle $\bFi$ is proved to be equivalent to existence of a Mañe sequence either for $\bFi$ or for its adjoint. As a consequence we extend some of the classical results to general Banach bundles. The dynamical spectrum of a product of two cocycles, one of which is scalar, is investigated and applied to describe the essential spectrum of the Euler eq…

As a consequence we extend some of the classical results to general Banach bundles. The dynamical spectrum of a product of two cocycles, one of which is scalar, is investigated and applied to describe the essential spectrum of the Euler equation in an arbitrary spacial dimension.

Abstract:
We prove that the energy equality holds for weak solutions of the 3D Navier-Stokes equations in the functional class $L^3([0,T);V^{5/6})$, where $V^{5/6}$ is the domain of the fractional power of the Stokes operator $A^{5/12}$.

Onsager conjectured that weak solutions of the Euler equations for incompressible fluids in 3D conserve energy only if they have a certain minimal smoothness, (of order of 1/3 fractional derivatives) and that they dissipate energy if they are rougher. Onsager conjectured that weak solutions of the Euler equations for incompressible fluids in 3D conserve energy only if they have a certain minimal smoothness, (of order of 1/3 fractional derivatives) and that they dissipate energy if they are rougher. In this paper we prove that energy is conserved for velocities in the function space $B^{1/3}_{3,c(\NN)}$. We show that this space is sharp in a natural sense. We phrase the energy spectrum in terms of the Littlewood-Paley decomposition and show that the energy flux is controlled by local interactions. This locality is shown to hold also for the helicity flux; moreover, every weak solution of the Euler equations that belongs to $B^{2/3}_{3,c(\NN)}$ conserves helicity. In contrast, in two dimensions, the strong locality of the enstrophy holds only in the ultraviolet range.
