This paper deals with a novel nonlinear coupled nonlocal reaction-diffusion system proposed for image restoration, characterized by the advantages of preserving low gray level features and textures. The gray level indicator in the proposed model is regularized using a new method based on porous media type equations, which is suitable for recovering noisy blurred images. The well-posedness, regularity, and other properties of the model are investigated, addressing the lack of theoretical analysis in those existing similar types of models. Numerical experiments conducted on texture and satellite images demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed model in denoising and deblurring tasks.

In this paper, we introduce the generalized energy method that can close the bounds by combining momentum and energy estimates and derive the results by viscosity methods. The whole arguments basically only involve integration by parts and Sobolev embedding inequalities, just like the classical local existence theorem for semilinear Schrödinger equations. For quadratic interaction problem with small data, we derive low regularity local wellposedness in the same function spaces as in the works of Kenig et al. For cubic interaction problem, we obtain the same low regularity results as in Marzuola et al. (Kyoto J Math, 2014).

This work investigates the optimal control problem for reflected McKean-Vlasov SDEs and the viscosity solutions to Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman(HJB) equations on the Wasserstein space in terms of intrinsic derivative. It follows from the flow property of reflected McKean-Vlasov SDEs that the dynamic programming principle holds. Applying the decoupling method and the heat kernel estimates for parabolic equations, we show that the value function is a viscosity solution to an appropriate HJB equation on the Wasserstein space, where the characterization of absolutely continuous curves on the Wasserstein space by the continuity equations plays an important role. To establish the uniqueness of viscosity solution, we generalize the construction of a distance like function initiated in Burzoni et al.(SICON, 2020) to the Wasserstein space over multidimensional space and show its effectiveness to cope with HJB equations in terms of intrinsic derivative on the Wasserstein space.

The ergodicity of the fast process has important impact on the limit system and the averaging principle. We showed that under strongly ergodic condition, the limit system admits a unique solution, and the slow process converges in the L1-norm to the limit system. However, under certain weaker ergodicity condition, the limit system admits a solution, but not necessarily unique, and the slow process can be proved to converge weakly to a solution of the limit system.

Our proposed covariate-adjusted log-rank test has a simple explicit formula and a guaranteed efficiency gain over the unadjusted test. We also show that our proposed test achieves universal applicability in the sense that the same formula of test can be universally applied to simple randomization and all commonly used covariate-adaptive randomization schemes such as the stratified permuted block and Pocock and Simon's minimization, which is not a property enjoyed by the unadjusted log-rank test. Platooning connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs) can improve traffic and fuel efficiency. However, scalable platooning operations require junction-level coordination, which has not been well studied. In this paper, we study the coordination of vehicle platooning at highway junctions. We consider a setting where CAVs randomly arrive at a highway junction according to a general renewal process. When a CAV approaches the junction, a system operator determines whether the CAV will merge into the platoon ahead according to the positions and speeds of the CAV and the platoon. We formulate a Markov decision process to minimize the discounted cumulative travel cost, i.e. fuel consumption plus travel delay, over an infinite time horizon. We show that the optimal policy is threshold-based: the CAV will merge with the platoon if and only if the difference between the CAV's and the platoon's predicted times of arrival at the junction is less than a constant threshold. We also propose two ready-to-implement algorithms to derive the optimal policy. Comparison with the classical value iteration algorithm implies that our approach explicitly incorporating the characteristics of the optimal policy is significantly more efficient in terms of computation. Importantly, we show that the optimal policy under Poisson arrivals can be obtained by solving a system of integral equations. We also validate our results in simulation with Real-time Strategy (RTS) using real traffic data. The simulation results indicate that the proposed method yields better performance compared with the conventional method.

Fractured porous media or double porosity media are common in nature. At the same time, accurate modeling remains a significant challenge due to bi-modal pore size distribution, anisotropy, multi-field coupling, and various flow patterns. This study aims to formulate a comprehensive coupled continuum framework that could adequately consider these critical characteristics. In our framework, fluid flow in the micro-fracture network is modeled with the generalized Darcy's law, in which the equivalent fracture permeability is upscaled from the detailed geological characterizations. The liquid in the much less permeable matrix follows a low-velocity non-Darcy flow characterized by threshold values and non-linearity. The fluid mass transfer is assumed to be a function of the shape factor, pressure difference, and (variable) interface permeability. The solid deformation relies on a thermodynamically consistent effective stress derived from the energy balance equation, and it is modeled following anisotropic poroelastic theory. The discussion revolves around generic double porosity media. Model applications reveal the capability of our framework to capture the crucial roles of coupling, poroelastic coefficients, anisotropy, and ultra-low matrix permeability in dictating the pressure and displacement fields.

Covariate-adaptive randomization is popular in clinical trials with sequentially arrived patients for balancing treatment assignments across prognostic factors which may have influence on the response. However, existing theory on tests for treatment effect under covariate-adaptive randomization is limited to tests under linear or generalized linear models, although covariate-adaptive randomization has been used in survival analysis for a long time and its main application is in survival analysis. Often times, practitioners would simply adopt a conventional test such as the log-rank test or score test to compare two treatments, which is controversial since tests derived under simple randomization may not be valid under other randomization schemes. In this article, we prove that the log-rank test valid under simple randomization is conservative in terms of type I error under covariate-adaptive randomization, and the robust score test developed under simple randomization is no longer robust under covariate-adaptive randomization. We then propose a calibration type log-rank or score test that is valid and robust under both simple randomization and a large family of covariate-adaptive randomization schemes. Furthermore, we obtain Pitman's efficacy of log-rank and score tests to compare their asymptotic relative efficiency. Simulation studies about the type I error and power of various tests are presented under several popular randomization schemes.

This work establishes the weak convergence of Euler-Maruyama's approximation for stochastic differential equations (SDEs) with singular drifts under the integrability condition in lieu of the widely used growth condition. This method is based on a skillful application of the dimension-free Harnack inequality. Moreover, when the drifts satisfy certain regularity conditions, the convergence rate is estimated. This method is also applicable when the diffusion coefficients are degenerate. A stochastic dam** Hamiltonian system is studied as an illustrative example.

The extinction and persistence of infective individuals are closely related to the random change of the environment. In this paper, via the random/stochastic SIRS models, we analyze qualitatively and quantitatively the impact caused by the random change of the environment. Our contributions consist in (i) giving some sufficient conditions on extinction (persistence) of the infectious individuals even though they are persistent (resp. extinct) in certain fixed environments; (ii) revealing the influence of random switching of incidence functions on extinction for the infectious individuals, which has not been studied before; (iii) establishing a criterion to judge extinction of the infectious individuals for a range of random/stochastic SIRS models with state-dependent switching via a stochastic comparison for functionals of jump processes. Moreover, some examples are set to illustrate the applications of our theory.

Such processes have many different properties than general diffusion processes, and much more difficulties are needed to be overcome due to the intensive interaction between continuous and discrete component. One essential difference shown in this work between CIR process with regime-switching and without regime-switching is that the stationary distribution for CIR process with regime-switching could be heavy-tailed. Our results provide a theoretical evidence of the existence of regime-switching for interest rates model based on its heavy-tailed empirical evidence. In this work, we first provide sharp criteria to justify the existence of stationary distribution for the CIR process with regime-switching, which is applied to study the long term returns of interest rates. Then under the existence of the stationary distribution, we provide a criterion to justify whether its stationary distribution is heavy-tailed or not.

In this work, we are concerned with existence and uniqueness of invariant measures for path-dependent random diffusions and their time discretizations. The random diffusion here means a diffusion process living in a random environment characterized by a continuous time Markov chain. Under certain ergodic conditions, we show that the path-dependent random diffusion enjoys a unique invariant probability measure and converges exponentially to its equilibrium under the Wasserstein distance. Also, we demonstrate that the time discretization of the path-dependent random diffusion involved admits a unique invariant probability measure and shares the corresponding ergodic property when the stepsize is sufficiently small. During this procedure, the difficulty arose from the time-discretization of continuous time Markov chain has to be deal with, for which an estimate on its exponential functional is presented.

We define three types of upper (and lower) triangular blocked tensors, which are all generalizations of the triangular blocked matrices. We study some basic properties and characterizations of these three types of triangular blocked tensors. We obtain the formulas for the determinants, characteristic polynomials and spectra of the first and second type triangular blocked tensors, and give an example to show that these formulas no longer hold for the third type triangular blocked tensors. We prove that the product of any two $(n_1,\cdots,n_r)$-upper (or lower) triangular blocked tensors of the first or second or third type is still an $(n_1,\cdots,n_r)$-upper (or lower) triangular blocked tensor of the same type. We also prove that, if an $(n_1,\cdots,n_r)$-upper triangular blocked tensor of the first or second or third type has a left $k$-inverse, then its unique left $k$-inverse is still an $(n_1,\cdots,n_r)$-upper triangular blocked tensor of the same type. Also if it has a right $k$-inverse, then all of its right $k$-inverses are still $(n_1,\cdots,n_r)$-upper triangular blocked tensors of the same type. By showing that the left $k$-inverse (if any) of a weakly irreducible nonsingular $M$-tensor is a positive tensor, we show that the left $k$-inverse (if any) of a first or second or third type canonical $(n_1,\cdots,n_r)$-upper triangular blocked nonsingular $M$-tensor is an $(n_1,\cdots,n_r)$-upper triangular blocked tensor of the same type all of whose diagonal blocks are positive tensors. We also show that every order $m$ dimension $n$ tensor is permutation similar to some third type normal upper triangular blocked tensor (all of whose diagonal blocks are irreducible). We give an example to show that this is not true for the first type canonical upper triangular blocked tensor.

Some sufficient conditions on the algebraic stability of non-homogeneous regime-switching diffusion processes are established. In this work we focus on determining the decay rate of a stochastic system which switches randomly between different states, and owns different decay rates at various states. In particular, we show that if a finite-state regime-switching diffusion process is $p$-th moment exponentially stable in some states and is $p$-th moment algebraically stable in other states, which are characterized by a common Lyapunov function, then this process is ultimately exponentially stable regardless of the jum** rate of the random switching between these states. Moreover, these results can be applied to the stabilization of SDE by feedback control to reduce the observation times.

In this work we study the permanence and extinction of a regime-switching predator-prey model with Beddington-DeAngelis functional response. The switching process is used to describe the random changing of corresponding parameters such as birth and death rates of a species in different environments. Our criteria can justify whether a prey die out or not when it will die out in some environments and will not in others. Our criteria are rather sharp, and they cover the known on-off type results on permanence of predator-prey models without switching. Our method relies on the recent study of ergodicity of regime-switching diffusion processes.

In this paper, we study some extremal problems of three kinds of spectral radii of $k$-uniform hypergraphs (the adjacency spectral radius, the signless Laplacian spectral radius and the incidence $Q$-spectral radius).
We call a connected and acyclic $k$-uniform hypergraph a supertree. We introduce the operation of "moving edges" for hypergraphs, together with the two special cases of this operation: the edge-releasing operation and the total grafting operation. By studying the perturbation of these kinds of spectral radii of hypergraphs under these operations, we prove that for all these three kinds of spectral radii, the hyperstar $\mathcal{S}_{n,k}$ attains uniquely the maximum spectral radius among all $k$-uniform supertrees on $n$ vertices. We also determine the unique $k$-uniform supertree on $n$ vertices with the second largest spectral radius (for these three kinds of spectral radii). We also prove that for all these three kinds of spectral radii, the loose path $\mathcal{P}_{n,k}$ attains uniquely the minimum spectral radius among all $k$-th power hypertrees of $n$ vertices. Some bounds on the incidence $Q$-spectral radius are given. The relation between the incidence $Q$-spectral radius and the spectral radius of the matrix product of the incidence matrix and its transpose is discussed.

Thus the largest Laplacian H-eigenvalue of $G$, reaches the same upper bound, if and only if $G$ is regular and odd-bipartite. We show that an $s$-cycle $G$, as a $k$-uniform hypergraph, where $1 \le s \le k-1$, is regular if and only if there is a positive integer $q$ such that $k=q(k-s)$. We show that an even-uniform $s$-path and an even-uniform non-regular $s$-cycle are always odd-bipartite. We prove that a regular $s$-cycle $G$ with $k=q(k-s)$ is odd-bipartite if and only if $m$ is a multiple of $2^{t_0}$, where $m$ is the number of edges in $G$, and $q = 2^{t_0}(2l_0+1)$ for some integers $t_0$ and $l_0$. We identify the value of the largest signless Laplacian H-eigenvalue of an $s$-cycle $G$ in all possible cases. When $G$ is odd-bipartite, this is also its largest Laplacian H-eigenvalue. We introduce supervertices for hypergraphs, and show the components of a Laplacian H-eigenvector of an odd-uniform hypergraph are equal if such components corresponds vertices in the same supervertex, and the corresponding Laplacian H-eigenvalue is not equal to the degree of the supervertex. Using this property, we show that the largest Laplacian H-eigenvalue of an odd-uniform generalized loose $s$-cycle $G$ is equal to $Δ(G)=2$. We also show that the largest Laplacian H-eigenvalue of a $k$-uniform tight $s$-cycle $G$ is not less than $Δ(G)+1$, if the number of vertices is even and $k=4l+3$ for some nonnegative integer $l$.

As applications of these trace formulas in the study of the spectra of uniform hypergraphs, we give a characterization (in terms of the traces of the adjacency tensors) of the $k$-uniform hypergraphs whose spectra are $k$-symmetric, thus give an answer to a question raised in [3]. We generalize the results in [3, Theorem 4.2] and [5, Proposition 3.1] about the $k$-symmetry of the spectrum of a $k$-uniform hypergraph, and answer a question in [5] about the relation between the Laplacian and signless Laplacian spectra of a $k$-uniform hypergraph when $k$ is odd. We also give a simplified proof of an expression for $Tr_2(\mathbb {T})$ and discuss the expression for $Tr_3(\mathbb {T})$.
