In this paper, we introduce some new notions of aging based on geometric, harmonic means of failure rate and aging intensity function. We define a generalized version of aging functions called specific interval-average geometric hazard rate, specific interval-average harmonic hazard rate. We focus on some characterization results and their inter-relationships among the resulting non-parametric classes of distributions. Monotonic nature of so defined aging classes are exhibited by some well known probability distributions. Probabilistic orders based on these functions are taken up for further study. The work is illustrated through case studies and a simulated data having applications in reliability/survival analysis.

Spin glass models with quadratic-type Hamiltonians are disordered statistical physics systems with competing ferromagnetic and anti-ferromagnetic spin interactions. The corresponding Gibbs measures belong to the exponential family parametrized by (inverse) temperature $β>0$ and external field $h\in\mathbb{R}$. Given a sample from these Gibbs measures, a statistically fundamental question is to infer the temperature and external field parameters. In 2007, Chatterjee (Ann. Statist. 35 (2007), no.5, 1931-1946) first proved that in the absence of external field $h=0$, the maximum pseudolikelihood estimator for $β$ is $\sqrt{N}$-consistent under some mild assumptions on the disorder matrices. It was left open whether the same method can be used to estimate the temperature and external field simultaneously. In this paper, under some easily verifiable conditions, we prove that the bivariate maximum pseudolikelihood estimator is indeed jointly $\sqrt{N}$-consistent for the temperature and external field parameters. The examples cover the classical Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model and its diluted variants.

In a recent breakthrough [arXiv:2301.04112], Chatterjee proved site disorder chaos in the Edwards-Anderson (EA) short-range spin glass model utilizing the Hermite spectral method. In this paper, we demonstrate the further usefulness of this Hermite spectral approach by extending the validity of site disorder chaos in three related spin glass models.
The first, called the mixed even $p$-spin short-range model, is a generalization of the EA model where the underlying graph is a deterministic bounded degree hypergraph consisting of hyperedges with even number of vertices. The second model is the diluted mixed $p$-spin model, which is allowed to have hyperedges with both odd and even number of vertices. For both models, our results hold under general symmetric disorder distributions. The main novelty of our argument is played by an elementary algebraic equation for the Fourier-Hermite series coefficients for the two-spin correlation functions. It allows us to deduce necessary geometric conditions to determine the contributing coefficients in the overlap function, which in spirit is the same as the crucial Lemma 1 in [arXiv:2301.04112]. Finally, we also establish disorder chaos in the Lévy model with stable index $α\in (1, 2)$.

We study the minimal spanning arborescence which is the directed analogue of the minimal spanning tree, with a particular focus on its infinite volume limit and its geometric properties. We prove that in a certain large class of transient trees, the infinite volume limit exists almost surely. We also prove that for nonamenable, unimodular graphs, the limit is almost surely one-ended assuming a certain sufficient condition that guarantees the existence of the limit.
This object cannot be studied using well-known algorithms, such as Kruskal's or Prim's algorithm, to sample the minimal spanning tree which has been instrumental in getting analogous results about them (Lyons, Peres, and Schramm). Instead, we use a recursive algorithm due to Chu, Liu, Edmonds, and Bock, which leads to a novel stochastic process which we call the \emph{loop contracting random walk}. This is similar to the well-known and widely studied loop erased random walk, except instead of erasing loops we contract them. The full algorithm bears similarities with the celebrated Wilson's algorithm to generate uniform spanning trees and can be seen as a certain limit of the original Wilson's algorithm.

This article addresses the question concerning the existence of global entropy solution for generalized Eulerian droplet models with air velocity depending on both space and time variables. When $f(u)=u,$ $κ(t)=const.$ and $u_a(x,t)=const.$ in (1.1), the study of the Riemann problem has been carried out by Keita and Bourgault [42] & Zhang et al. [38]. We show the global existence of the entropy solution to (1.1) for any strictly increasing function $f(\cdot)$ and $u_a(x,t)$ depending only on time with mild regularity assumptions on the initial data via shadow wave tracking approach. This represents a significant improvement over the findings of Yang [26]. Next, by using the generalized variational principle, we prove the existence of an explicit entropy solution to (1.1) with $f(u)=u,$ for all time $t>0$ and initial mass $v_0>0,$ where $u_a(x,t)$ depends on both space and time variables, and also has an algebraic decay in the time variable. This improves the results of many authors such as Ha et al. [40], Cheng and Yang [27] & Ding and Wang [50] in various ways. Furthermore, by employing the shadow wave tracking procedure, we discuss the existence of global entropy solution to the generalized two-phase flow model with time-dependent air velocity that extends the recent results of Shen and Sun [9].

In this paper we generalize the results of DMZ to meromorphic Jacobi forms of rational index for congruence subgroups of $\mathrm{SL}(2, \mathbb{Z})$. As an application, we establish that a large class of single-centered black hole degeneracies in CHL models are given by the Fourier coefficients of mock Jacobi forms. In this process we refine the result of DMZ regarding the set of charges for which the single-centered black hole degeneracies are given by a mock modular form. In particular, in the case studied by DMZ, we present examples of charges for which the single-centered degeneracies are not captured by the mock modular form of the expected index.

We study the Lévy spin glass model, a fully connected model on $N$ vertices with heavy-tailed interactions governed by a power law distribution of order $0<α<2.$ Our investigation focuses on two domains $0<α<1$ and $1<α<2.$ When $1<α<2,$ we identify a high temperature regime, in which the limit and fluctuation of the free energy are explicitly obtained and the site and bond overlaps are shown to exhibit concentration, interestingly, while the former is concentrated around zero, the latter obeys a positivity behavior. At any temperature, we further establish the existence of the limiting free energy and derive a variational formula analogous to Panchenko's framework in the setting of the Poissonian Viana-Bray model. In the case of $0<α<1$, we show that the Lévy model behaves differently, where the proper scaling for the free energy is super-linear and the normalized free energy converges weakly to the sum of a Poisson Point Process at any temperature. Additionally, we show that the Gibbs measure carries its weight on polynomially many heaviest edges.

We consider the disordered monomer-dimer model on general finite graphs with bounded degrees. Under the finite fourth moment assumption on the weight distributions, we prove a Gaussian central limit theorem for the free energy of the associated Gibbs measure with a rate of convergence. The central limit theorem continues to hold under a nearly optimal finite $(2+ε)$-moment assumption on the weight distributions if the underlying graphs are further assumed to have a uniformly subexponential volume growth. This generalizes a recent result by Dey and Krishnan (arXiv:2109.12716) who showed a Gaussian central limit theorem in the disordered monomer-dimer model on cylinder graphs. Our proof relies on the idea that the disordered monomer-dimer model exhibits a decay of correlation with high probability. We also establish a central limit theorem for the Gibbs average of the number of dimers where the underlying graph has subexponential volume growth and the edge weights are Gaussians.

A Lax-Oleinik type explicit formula for 1D scalar balance laws has been recently obtained for the pure initial value problem by Adimurthi et al. in [1]. In this article, by introducing a suitable boundary functional, we establish a Lax-Oleinik type formula for the initial boundary value problem. For the pure initial value problem, the solution for the corresponding Hamilton-Jacobi equation turns out to be the minimizer of a functional on the set of curves known as h-curves. In the present situation, part of the h-curve joining any two points in the quarter plane may cross the boundary $x = 0.$ This phenomenon breaks the simplicity of the minimization process through the boundary functional compared to the case of conservation laws. Moreover, this complicates the verification of the boundary condition in the sense of Bardos, le Roux, and Nedelec [2]. To verify the boundary condition, the boundary points are classified into three types depending on the structure of the minimizers at those points. Finally, by introducing characteristic triangles, we construct generalized characteristics and show that the explicit solution is entropy admissible.

We study a diluted mean-field spin glass model with a quadratic Hamiltonian. Our main result establishes the limiting free energy in terms of an integral of a family of random variables that are the weak limits of the quenched variances of the spins in the system with varying edge connectivity. The key ingredient in our argument is played by the identification of these random variables as the unique solution to a recursive distributional equation. Our results in particular provide the first example of the diluted Shcherbina-Tirozzi model, whose limiting free energy can be derived at any inverse temperature and external field.

Crises like the COVID-19 pandemic pose a serious challenge to health-care institutions. They need to plan the resources required for handling the increased load, for instance, hospital beds and ventilators. To support the resource planning of local health authorities from the Cologne region, BaBSim.Hospital, a tool for capacity planning based on discrete event simulation, was created. The predictive quality of the simulation is determined by 29 parameters. Reasonable default values of these parameters were obtained in detailed discussions with medical professionals. We aim to investigate and optimize these parameters to improve BaBSim.Hospital. First approaches with "out-of-the-box" optimization algorithms failed. Implementing a surrogate-based optimization approach generated useful results in a reasonable time. To understand the behavior of the algorithm and to get valuable insights into the fitness landscape, an in-depth sensitivity analysis was performed. The sensitivity analysis is crucial for the optimization process because it allows focusing the optimization on the most important parameters. We illustrate how this reduces the problem dimension without compromising the resulting accuracy. The presented approach is applicable to many other real-world problems, e.g., the development of new elevator systems to cover the last mile or simulation of student flow in academic study periods.

The paper considers the system of pressureless gas dynamics in one space dimension. The question of solvability of the initial-boundary value problem is addressed. Using the method of generalized potentials and characteristic triangles, extended to the boundary value case, an explicit way of constructing measure-valued solutions is presented. The prescription of boundary data is shown to depend on the behavior of the generalized potentials at the boundary. We show that the constructed solution satisfies an entropy condition and it conserves mass, whereby mass may accumulate at the boundary. Conservation of momentum again depends on the behavior of the generalized boundary potentials. There is a large amount of literature where the initial value problem for the pressureless gas dynamics model has been studied. To our knowledge, this paper is the first one which considers the initial-boundary value problem.

The scaled standard Wigner matrix (symmetric with mean zero, variance one i.i.d. entries), and its limiting eigenvalue distribution, namely the semi-circular distribution, has attracted much attention. The $2k$th moment of the limit equals the number of non-crossing pair-partitions of the set $\{1, 2, \ldots, 2k\}$. There are several extensions of this result in the literature. In this paper we consider a unifying extension which also yields additional results.
Suppose $W_n$ is an $n\times n$ symmetric matrix where the entries are independently distributed. We show that under suitable assumptions on the entries, the limiting spectral distribution exists in probability or almost surely. The moments of the limit can be described through a set of partitions which in general is larger than the set of non-crossing pair-partitions. This set gives rise to interesting enumerative combinatorial problems.
Several existing limiting spectral distribution results follow from our results. These include results on the standard Wigner matrix, the adjacency matrix of a sparse homogeneous Erdős-Rényi graph, heavy tailed Wigner matrix, some banded Wigner matrices, and Wigner matrices with variance profile. Some new results on these models and their extensions also follow from our main results.

In the present work, we focus on the cases $1\leq p<2$ and $2<p<\infty.$ For the former, we compute the limit of the $\ell_p$-Gaussian-Grothendieck problem and investigate the structure of the set of all near optimizers along with stability estimates. In the latter case, we show that this problem admits a Parisi-type variational representation and the corresponding optimizer is weakly delocalized in the sense that its entries vanish uniformly in a polynomial order.

The box-ball systems are integrable cellular automata whose long-time behavior is characterized by soliton solutions, with rich connections to other integrable systems such as the Korteweg-de Vries equation. In this paper, we consider a multicolor box-ball system with two types of random initial configurations and obtain sharp scaling limits of the soliton lengths as the system size tends to infinity. We obtain a sharp scaling limit of soliton lengths that turns out to be more delicate than that in the single color case established in [Levine, Lyu, Pike '20]. A large part of our analysis is devoted to studying the associated carrier process, which is a multi-dimensional Markov chain on the orthant, whose excursions and running maxima are closely related to soliton lengths. We establish the sharp scaling of its ruin probabilities, Skorokhod decomposition, strong law of large numbers, and weak diffusive scaling limit to a semimartingale reflecting Brownian motion with explicit parameters. We also establish and utilize complementary descriptions of the soliton lengths and numbers in terms of modified Greene-Kleitman invariants for the box-ball systems and associated circular exclusion processes.

When the initial data is of Riemann type, we showed the existence of solution which consists of shock waves and rarefaction waves and that the distributional limit of the solutions for this system converges to the solution of a non-strictly hyperbolic system, called one dimensional model for large scale structure formation of universe as the scaling parameter vanishes. An explicit entropy and entropy flux pair are also constructed for the particular flux function (Brio system) and it is shown that the solution constructed is entropy admissible. Poisson processes to agree with a majority of their neighbors. We study this process on the 3-regular tree $\mathbb{T}_3$, where it is known that the critical threshold $p_c$, below which $\mathbb{P}_p$-a.s. all spins fixate to $-1$, is strictly less than $1/2$. Defining $θ(p)$ to be the $\mathbb{P}_p$-probability that a vertex fixates to $+1$, we show that $θ$ is a continuous function on $[0,1]$, so that, in particular, $θ(p_c)=0$. To do this, we introduce a new continuous-spin process we call the median process, which gives a coupling of all the measures $\mathbb{P}_p$. Along the way, we study the time-infinity agreement clusters of the median process, show that they are a.s. finite, and deduce that all continuous spins flip finitely often. In the second half of the paper, we show a correlation decay statement for the discrete spins under $\mathbb{P}_p$ for a.e. value of $p$. The proof relies on finiteness of a vertex's "trace" in the median process to derive a stability of discrete spins under finite resampling. Last, we use our methods to answer a question of C. Howard (2001) on the emergence of spin chains in $\mathbb{T}_3$ in finite time.

We show that the limiting ground state energy of the spherical mixed p-spin model can be identified as the infimum of certain variational problem. This complements the well-known Parisi formula for the limiting free energy in the spherical model. As an application, we obtain explicit formulas for the limiting ground state energy in the replica symmetry, one level of replica symmetry breaking and full replica symmetry breaking phases at zero temperature. In addition, our approach leads to new results on disorder chaos in spherical mixed even p-spin models. In particular, we prove that when there is no external field, the location of the ground state energy is chaotic under small perturbations of the disorder. We also establish that in the spherical mixed even p-spin model, the ground state energy superconcentrates in the absence of external field, while it obeys a central limit theorem if the external field is present.

We consider random polynomials whose coefficients are independent and uniform on {-1,1}. We prove that the probability that such a polynomial of degree n has a double root is o(n^{-2}) when n+1 is not divisible by 4 and asymptotic to $\frac{8\sqrt{3}}{πn^2}$ otherwise. This result is a corollary of a more general theorem that we prove concerning random polynomials with independent, identically distributed coefficients having a distribution which is supported on { -1, 0, 1} and whose largest atom is strictly less than 1/\sqrt{3}. In this general case, we prove that the probability of having a double root equals the probability that either -1, 0 or 1 are double roots up to an o(n^{-2}) factor and we find the asymptotics of the latter probability.

The computational aspect of this theory was first studied in (Chen \& Maclagan, 2013). In this paper, we generalize this Gröbner basis theory to free modules over polynomial rings over fields with valuation. As the valuation of coefficients is also taken into account while defining the initial term, we do not necessarily get a monomial order. To overcome this problem we have to resort to other techniques like the use of ecart function where the codomain is the well-ordered set $\mathbb{N}$, and thereby give a method to calculate the Gröbner basis for submodules generated by homogeneous elements.

We study a model of growing population that competes for resources. At each time step, all existing particles reproduce and the offspring randomly move to neighboring sites. Then at any site with more than one offspring, the particles are annihilated. This is a nonmonotone model, which makes the analysis more difficult. We consider the extinction window of this model in the finite mean-field case, where there are $n$ sites but movement is allowed to any site (the complete graph). We show that although the system survives for exponential time, the extinction window is logarithmic.

Quiver quantum mechanics is invariant under Seiberg duality. A mathematical consequence is that the cohomology of the Higgs branch moduli space is invariant under mutations of the quiver. The Coulomb branch formula, on the other hand, conjecturally expresses the Poincaré / Dolbeault polynomial of the Higgs branch moduli space in terms of certain quantities known as single-centered indices. In this work we determine the transformations of these single-centered indices under mutations. Moreover, we generalize these mutations to quivers whose nodes carry single-centered indices different from unity. Although the Higgs branch description of these generalized quivers is currently unknown, the Coulomb branch formula is conjectured to be invariant under generalized mutations.

We study the spectrum of adjacency matrices of random graphs. We develop two techniques to lower bound the mass of the continuous part of the spectral measure or the density of states. As an application, we prove that the spectral measure of bond percolation in the two dimensional lattice contains a non-trivial continuous part in the supercritical regime. The same result holds for the limiting spectral measure of a supercritical Erdos-Renyi graph and for the spectral measure of a unimodular random tree with at least two ends. We give examples of random graphs with purely continuous spectrum.

The coalescing Brownian flow on $\mathbb{R}$ is a process which was introduced by Arratia [Coalescing Brownian motions on the line (1979) Univ. Wisconsin, Madison] and Tóth and Werner [Probab. Theory Related Fields 111 (1998) 375-452], and which formally corresponds to starting coalescing Brownian motions from every space-time point. We provide a new state space and topology for this process and obtain an invariance principle for coalescing random walks. This result holds under a finite variance assumption and is thus optimal. In previous works by Fontes et al. [Ann. Probab. 32 (2004) 2857-2883], Newman et al. [Electron. J. Probab. 10 (2005) 21-60], the topology and state-space required a moment of order $3-\varepsilon$ for this convergence to hold. The proof relies crucially on recent work of Schramm and Smirnov on scaling limits of critical percolation in the plane. Our approach is sufficiently simple that we can handle substantially more complicated coalescing flows with little extra work - in particular similar results are obtained in the case of coalescing Brownian motions on the Sierpinski gasket. This is the first such result where the limiting paths do not enjoy the noncrossing property.

We consider a linear regression model and propose an omnibus test to simultaneously check the assumption of independence between the error and the predictor variables, and the goodness-of-fit of the parametric model. Our approach is based on testing for independence between the residual obtained from the parametric fit and the predictor using the Hilbert--Schmidt independence criterion (Gretton et al. (2008)). The proposed method requires no user-defined regularization, is simple to compute, based merely on pairwise distances between points in the sample, and is consistent against all alternatives. We develop distribution theory for the proposed test statistic, both under the null and the alternative hypotheses, and devise a bootstrap scheme to approximate its null distribution. We prove the consistency of the bootstrap scheme. A simulation study shows that our method has better power than its main competitors. Two real datasets are analyzed to demonstrate the scope and usefulness of our method.

In previous work we have shown that the equivariant index of multi-centered N=2 black holes localizes on collinear configurations along a fixed axis. Here we provide a general algorithm for enumerating such collinear configurations and computing their contribution to the index. We apply this machinery to the case of black holes described by quiver quantum mechanics, and give a systematic prescription -- the Coulomb branch formula -- for computing the cohomology of the moduli space of quiver representations. For quivers without oriented loops, the Coulomb branch formula is shown to agree with the Higgs branch formula based on Reineke's result for stack invariants, even when the dimension vector is not primitive. For quivers with oriented loops, the Coulomb branch formula parametrizes the Poincaré polynomial of the quiver moduli space in terms of single-centered (or pure-Higgs) BPS invariants, which are conjecturally independent of the stability condition (i.e. the choice of Fayet-Iliopoulos parameters) and angular-momentum free. To facilitate further investigation we provide a Mathematica package "CoulombHiggs.m" implementing the Coulomb and Higgs branch formulae.

Middle cohomology states on the Higgs branch of supersymmetric quiver quantum mechanics - also known as pure Higgs states - have recently emerged as possible microscopic candidates for single-centered black hole micro-states, as they carry zero angular momentum and appear to be robust under wall-crossing. Using the connection between quiver quantum mechanics on the Coulomb branch and the quantum mechanics of multi-centered black holes, we propose a general algorithm for reconstructing the full moduli-dependent cohomology of the moduli space of an arbitrary quiver, in terms of the BPS invariants of the pure Higgs states. We analyze many examples of quivers with loops, including all cyclic Abelian quivers and several examples with two loops or non-Abelian gauge groups, and provide supporting evidence for this proposal. We also develop methods to count pure Higgs states directly.
