We propose a threshold-type algorithm to the $L^2$-gradient flow of the Canham-Helfrich functional generalized to $\mathbb{R}^N$. The algorithm to the Willmore flow is derived as a special case in $\mathbb{R}^2$ or $\mathbb{R}^3$. This algorithm is constructed based on an asymptotic expansion of the solution to the initial value problem for a fourth order linear parabolic partial differential equation whose initial data is the indicator function on the compact set $Ω_0$. The crucial points are to prove that the boundary $\partialΩ_1$ of the new set $Ω_1$ generated by our algorithm is included in $O(t)$-neighborhood from $\partialΩ_0$ for small time $t>0$ and to show that the derivative of the threshold function in the normal direction for $\partialΩ_0$ is far from zero in the small time interval. Finally, numerical examples of planar curves governed by the Willmore flow are provided by using our threshold-type algorithm.

This paper is concerned with a singular limit of the Kobayashi-Warren-Carter system, a phase field system modelling the evolutions of structures of grains. Under a suitable scaling, the limit system is formally derived when the interface thickness parameter tends to zero. Different from many other problems, it turns out that the limit system is a system involving fractional time derivatives, although the original system is a simple gradient flow. A rigorous derivation is given when the problem is reduced to a gradient flow of a single-well Modica-Mortola functional in a one-dimensional setting.

In this paper, we consider numerical approximation of constrained gradient flows of planar closed curves, including the Willmore and the Helfrich flows. These equations have energy dissipation and the latter has conservation properties due to the constraints. We will develop structure-preserving methods for these equations that preserve both the dissipation and the constraints. To preserve the energy structures, we introduce the discrete version of gradients according to the discrete gradient method and determine the Lagrange multipliers appropriately. We directly address higher order derivatives by using the Galerkin method with B-spline curves to discretize curves. Moreover, we will consider stabilization of the schemes by adding tangential velocities. We introduce a new Lagrange multiplier to obtain both the energy structures and the stability. Several numerical examples are presented to verify that the proposed schemes preserve the energy structures with good distribution of control points.

The bidomain model is the standard model for cardiac electrophysiology. In this paper, we investigate the instability and asymptotic behavior of planar fronts and planar pulses of the bidomain Allen-Cahn equation and the bidomain FitzHugh-Nagumo equation in two spatial dimension. In previous work, it was shown that planar fronts of the bidomain Allen-Cahn equation can become unstable in contrast to the classical Allen-Cahn equation. We find that, after the planar front is destabilized, a rotating zigzag front develops whose shape can be explained by simple geometric arguments using a suitable Frank diagram. We also show that the Hopf bifurcation through which the front becomes unstable can be either supercritical or subcritical, by demonstrating a parameter regime in which a stable planar front and zigzag front can coexist. In our computational studies of the bidomain FitzHugh-Nagumo pulse solution, we show that the pulses can also become unstable much like the bidomain Allen-Cahn fronts. However, unlike the bidomain Allen-Cahn case, the destabilized pulse does not necessarily develop into a zigzag pulse. For certain choice of parameters, the destabilized pulse can disintegrate entirely. These studies are made possible by the development of a numerical scheme that allows for the accurate computation of the bidomain equation in a two dimensional strip domain of infinite extent.

We consider the numerical integration of moving boundary problems with the curve-shortening property, such as the mean curvature flow and Hele-Shaw flow. We propose a fully discrete curve-shortening polygonal evolution law. The proposed evolution law is fully implicit, and the key to the derivation is to devise the definitions of tangent and normal vectors and tangential and normal velocities at each vertex in an implicit manner. Numerical experiments show that the proposed method allows the use of relatively large time step sizes and also captures the area-preserving or dissipative property in good accuracy.

Many authors have studied the numerical computation of conformal map**s (numerical conformal map**), and there are nowadays several efficient numerical schemes. Among them, Amano's method offers a straightforward numerical procedure for computing conformal map**s based on the method of fundamental solutions, and it has been applied to several regions with great success. However, there are some difficulties in constructing a suitable conjugate harmonic function; therefore, it is required a little of craftmanship. In this paper, we construct another numerical scheme for computing conformal map**s based on the dipole simulation method and give mathematical theorems on the approximation error and the arrangements of the singular points. Several numerical results are also presented in order to ensure the effectiveness of our proposed method.

In this paper, we propose a new numerical scheme for a spatially discrete model of constrained total variation flows, which are total variation flows whose values are constrained in a Riemannian manifold. The difficulty of this problem is that the underlying function space is not convex and it is hard to calculate the minimizer of the functional with the manifold constraint. We overcome this difficulty by "localization technique" using the exponential map and prove the finite-time error estimate in general situation. Finally, we show a few numerical results for the cases that the target manifolds are $S^2$ and $SO(3)$.
