This note proposes a novel nonlinear state feedback controller for perturbed second-order systems. In analogy to a linear proportional-derivative (PD) output feedback control, the proposed nonlinear scheme uses the output state of interest and its time derivative for a robust finite-time regulation. The control has only one free design parameter, and the closed-loop system is shown to be uniformly asymptotically stable in the presence of matched disturbances. We derive a strict Lyapunov function for the closed control loop with a bounded exogenous perturbation, and use it for both the control tuning and analysis of the finite-time convergence. Apart from the numerical results, a revealing experimental example is also shown in favor of the proposed control and in comparison with PD and sub-optimal nonlinear dam** regulators.

Nonlinear integral extension of PID control with improved convergence of perturbed second-order dynamic systems
Authors:

Abstract:
Nonlinear extension of the integral part of PID feedback control is proposed for the perturbed second-order systems. For the matched constant perturbations, the global asymptotic stability is shown, and for Lipschitz perturbations an ultimately bounded output error is guaranteed. The second-order system plants can also be expanded by an additional (parasitic) actuator dynamics with low-pass charac…

Nonlinear extension of the integral part of PID feedback control is proposed for the perturbed second-order systems. For the matched constant perturbations, the global asymptotic stability is shown, and for Lipschitz perturbations an ultimately bounded output error is guaranteed. The second-order system plants can also be expanded by an additional (parasitic) actuator dynamics with low-pass characteristics. The proposed nonlinear control is proven to outperform its linear (PID) benchmarking counterpart during the settling phase, i.e. at convergence of the residual output error. An experimental case study of the second-order system with an additional actuator dynamics and considerable perturbation is demonstrated to confirm and benchmark the control performance.

On convergence analysis of feedback control with integral action and discontinuous relay perturbation

Abstract:
We consider third-order dynamic systems which have integral feedback action and discontinuous relay disturbance. More specifically for applications, our focus is on the integral plus state-feedback control of motion systems with the discontinuous Coulomb-type friction. We resume the attractive stiction region, where the hybrid system has also solutions in Filippov sense, while the motion trajector…

We consider third-order dynamic systems which have integral feedback action and discontinuous relay disturbance. More specifically for applications, our focus is on the integral plus state-feedback control of motion systems with the discontinuous Coulomb-type friction. We resume the attractive stiction region, where the hybrid system has also solutions in Filippov sense, while the motion trajectories remain in an idle state (that we call `stiction') until the sliding-mode condition becomes violated through the integral action. We analyze the conditions for occurrence of the slowly converging stick-slip cycles. We also show that the hybrid system is globally but only asymptotically and almost always not exponentially stable. A particular case of exponential convergence can appear for some initial values, assuming the characteristic equation of the linear subsystem has only the real roots. Illustrative numerical examples are provided alongside with the developed analysis.

The second-order sub-optimal sliding mode control (SMC), known in the literature for the last two decades, is extended by a control-off mode which allows for saving energy during the finite time convergence. The systems with relative degree two between the sliding variable and switching control with bounded actuation are considered, while the matched upper-bounded perturbations are not necessarily continuous. Detailed analysis of the proposed energy-saving sub optimal SMC is performed with regard to the parametric conditions, reaching and convergence time, and residual steady oscillations if the parasitic actuator dynamics is added. Constraints for both switching threshold parameters are formulated with respect to the control authority and perturbations upper bound. Based on the estimated finite convergence time, the parameterization of the switching thresholds is solved as constrained minimization of the derived energy cost function. The total energy consuming control-on time is guaranteed to be lower than the upper-bounded convergence time of the conventional sub-optimal SMC. Numerical evaluations expose the properties of the proposed energy-saving sub-optimal SMC and compare it with conventional sub-optimal SMC in terms of the fuel consumption during the convergence.

Following Demidovich's concept and definition of convergent systems, we analyze the optimal nonlinear dam** control, recently proposed [1] for the second-order systems. Targeting the problem of output regulation, correspondingly tracking of $\mathcal{C}^1$-trajectories, it is shown that all solutions of the control system are globally uniformly asymptotically stable. The existence of the unique limit solution in the origin of the control error and its time derivative coordinates are shown in the sense of Demidovich's convergent dynamics. Explanative numerical examples are also provided along with analysis.
