Abstract:
We study stability properties of solitary wave solutions for the fractional generalized Korteweg-de Vries equation $$ \partial_t u- \partial_{x_1} D^αu+ \tfrac{1}{m}\partial_{x_1}(u^m)=0, ~ (x_1,\dots,x_d)\in \mathbb{R}^d, \, \, t\in \mathbb{R}, \, \, 0<α<2, $$ in any spatial dimension $d\geq 1$ and nonlinearity $m>1$. In the $L^2$-subcritical case, $1<m<\frac{2d}α+1$, we prove the orbital stability of solitary waves using the concentration-compactness argument, the commutator estimates and expansions of nonlocal operator $D^α$ in several variables. In the $L^2$-supercritical case, $\frac{2d}α+1<m<m_{\ast}$, we show that solitary waves are unstable. The instability is obtained by making use of an explicit sequence of initial conditions in conjunction with modulation and truncation arguments. This work maybe be of interest for studying solitary waves and other coherent structures in dispersive equations that involve nonlocal operators. The arguments developed here are independent of the spatial dimension and rely on a careful analysis of spatial decay of ground states and their regularity. In particular, in the one-dimensional setting, we show the instability of solitary waves of the supercritical generalized Benjamin-Ono equation and the dispersion-generalized Benjamin-Ono equation, furthermore, new results on the instability are obtained in the weaker dispersion regime $\frac{1}{2}<α<1$.

We consider the focusing $5$d Hartree equation, which is $L^2$-supercritical, with finite energy initial data, and investigate the solutions at the mass-energy threshold. We establish the existence of special solutions following the work of Duyckaerts-Roudenko [11] for the $3$d focusing cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS). In particular, apart from the ground state solution $Q$, which is global but non-scattering, there exist special solutions $Q^+$ and $Q^-$, which in one time direction approach $Q$ exponentially, and in the other time direction $Q^+$ blows up in finite time and $Q^-$ exists for all time, exhibiting scattering behavior. We then characterize all radial threshold solutions either as scattering and blow up solutions in both time directions (similar to the solutions under the mass-energy threshold, see Arora-Roudenko [3]), or as the special solutions described above. To obtain the existence and classification result, in this paper we perform a thorough and meticulous investigation of the spectral properties of the linearized operator associated to the Hartree equation.

We first prove the local well-posedness of both equations in a weighted subspace of $H^1$ that includes functions with polynomial decay, extending the result of Linares et al [39] to fractional weights. We then investigate solutions numerically, confirming the well-posedness and extending it to a wider class of functions that includes exponential decay. We include a comparison of solutions to both types of equations, in particular, we investigate soliton resolution for the positive and negative data with different decay rates. Finally, we study the interaction of various solitary waves in both models, showing the formation of solitons, dispersive radiation and even breathers, all of which are easier to track in nonlinearities with lower power.

For a generalized equation (fractional 2D gKdV) after deriving the Pohozaev identities, we obtain non-existence conditions for solitary wave solutions, then prove uniform bounds in the energy space or conditional global existence, and investigate the radiation region, a specific wedge in the negative $x$-direction. We then introduce our numerical approach in a general context, and apply it to obtain the ground state solution in the 2D critical HBO equation, then show that its mass is a threshold for global vs. finite time existing solutions, which is typical in the focusing (mass-)critical dispersive equations. We also observe that globally existing solutions tend to disperse completely into the radiation in this nonlocal equation. The blow-up solutions travel in the positive $x$-direction with the rescaled ground state profile while also radiating dispersive oscillations into the radiative wedge. We conclude with examples of different interactions of two solitary wave solutions, including weak and strong interactions.

We present a numerical study of solutions to the $2d$ cubic and quintic focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation in the exterior of a smooth, compact and strictly convex obstacle (a disk) with Dirichlet boundary condition. We first investigate the effect of the obstacle on the behavior of solutions traveling toward the obstacle at different angles and with different velocities directions. We introduce a new concept of weak and strong interactions of the solutions with the obstacle. Next, we study the existence of blow-up solutions depending on the type of the interaction and show how the presence of the obstacle changes the overall behavior of solutions (e.g., from blow-up to global existence), especially in the strong interaction case, as well as how it affects the shape of solutions compared to their initial data, (e.g., splitting into transmitted and reflected parts). We also investigate the influence of the size of the obstacle on the eventual existence of blow-up solutions in the strong interaction case in terms of the transmitted and the reflected parts of the mass. Moreover, we show that the sharp threshold for global existence vs. finite time blow-up solutions in the mass critical case in the presence of the obstacle is the same as the one given by Weinstein for {\rm{NLS}} in the whole Euclidean space $\R^d$. Finally, we construct new Wall-type initial data that blows up in finite time after a strong interaction with an obstacle and having a very distinct dynamics compared with all other blow-up scenarios and dynamics for the {\rm{NLS}} in the whole Euclidean space $\R^d$.

We first study stability of solitons with various perturbations in sizes and symmetry, and show asymptotic stability and formation of radiation, confirming the asymptotic stability result in \cite{FHRY2020} for a larger class of initial data. We then investigate the solution behavior for different localizations and rates of decay including exponential and algebraic decays, and give positive confirmation toward the soliton resolution conjecture in this equation. Finally, we investigate soliton interactions in various settings and show that there is both a quasi-elastic interaction and a strong interaction when two solitons merge into one, in all cases always emitting radiation in the conic-type region of the negative $x$-direction.

In the mBO equation ($m=3$), which is $L^2$-critical, we investigate solutions close to the ground state mass, and, in particular, we observe the formation of stable blow-up above it. Finally, we focus on the $L^2$-supercritical gBO equation with $m=4,5$. In that case we investigate the global vs finite time existence of solutions, and give numerical confirmation for the dichotomy conjecture, in particular, exhibiting blow-up phenomena in the supercritical setting.

Previously, Duyckaerts-Merle studied the behavior of threshold solutions in the $H^1$-critical case, in dimensions $N = 3, 4, 5$, later generalized by Li-Zhang for higher dimensions. In the intercritical case, Duyckaerts-Roudenko studied the threshold problem for the 3d cubic NLS equation.
In this paper, we generalize the results of Duyckaerts-Roudenko for any dimension and any power of the nonlinearity for the entire intecritical range. We show the existence of special solutions, $Q^\pm$, besides the standing wave $e^{it}Q$, which exponentially approach the standing wave in the positive time direction, but differ in its behavior for negative time. We classify all solutions at the threshold level, showing either blow-up occurs in finite (positive and negative) time, or scattering in both time directions, or the solution is equal to one of the three special solutions above, up to symmetries. Our proof extends to the $H^1$-critical case, thus, giving a different and more unified approach than the Li-Zhang result.
These results are obtained by studying the linearized equation around the standing wave and some tailored approximate solutions to the NLS equation. We establish important decay properties of functions associated to the spectrum of the linearized Schrödinger operator, which, in combination with modulational stability and coercivity for the linearized operator on special subspaces, allows us to use a fixed-point argument to show the existence of special solutions. Finally, we prove the uniqueness by studying exponentially decaying solutions to a sequence of linearized equations.

In the whole Euclidean space Duyckaerts and Roudenko (following the work of Duyckaerts and Merle on the energy-critical problem) have proved the existence of a specific global solution that scatters for negative times and converges to the soliton in positive times. We prove that these heteroclinic orbits do not exist for the problem in the exterior domain and that all solutions at the threshold are globally defined and scatter. The main difficulty is the control of the space translation parameter, since the Galilean transformation is not available.

The mass ($L^2$-norm) is conserved due to the multiplicative noise defined via the Stratonovich integral, the energy (Hamiltonian) is not preserved. We first investigate how the energy is affected by various spatially correlated random perturbations. We then study the influence of the noise on the global dynamics measuring the probability of blow-up versus scattering behavior depending on various parameters of correlation kernels. Finally, we study the effect of the spatially correlated noise on the blow-up behavior, and conclude that such random perturbations do not influence the blow-up dynamics, except for shifting of the blow-up center location. This is similar to what we observed in [32] for a space-time white driving noise.

Unlike the deterministic case, the Hamiltonian (or energy) is not conserved in the stochastic setting, nor is the mass (or the $L^2$-norm) conserved in the additive case. Therefore, we investigate the time evolution of these quantities. After that we study the influence of noise on the global behavior of solutions. In particular, we show that the noise may induce blow-up, thus, ceasing the global existence of the solution, which otherwise would be global in the deterministic setting. Furthermore, we study the effect of the noise on the blow-up dynamics in both multiplicative and additive noise settings and obtain profiles and rates of the blow-up solutions. Our findings conclude that the blow-up parameters (rate and profile) are insensitive to the type or strength of the noise: if blow-up happens, it has the same dynamics as in the deterministic setting, however, there is a (random) shift of the blow-up center, which can be described as a random variable normally distributed.

In the $L^2$-critical and supercritical cases, solitons appear to be unstable against both dispersion and blow-up. It is conjectured that blow-up happens in finite time and that blow-up solutions have some resemblance of being self-similar, i.e., the blow-up core forms a rightward moving self-similar type rescaled profile with the blow-up happening at infinity in the critical case and at a finite location in the supercritical case. First, we consider the $L^2$-critical case in dimensions d=3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and obtain that a generic blow-up has a self-similar structure and exhibits not only the square root blowup rate but also the log-log correction (via asymptotic analysis and functional fitting). In this setting we also study blow-up profiles and show that generic blow-up solutions converge to the rescaled $Q$, a ground state solution of the elliptic equation $-ΔQ+Q- \left(|x|^{-(d-2)} \ast |Q|^p \right) |Q|^{p-2} Q =0$.
We also consider the $L^2$-supercritical case in dimensions d=3,4. We derive the profile equation for the self-similar blow-up and establish the existence and local uniqueness of its solutions. As in the NLS $L^2$-supercritical regime, the profile equation exhibits branches of non-oscillating, polynomially decaying (multi-bump) solutions. A numerical scheme of putting constraints into solving the corresponding ODE is applied during the process of finding the multi-bump solutions. Direct numerical simulation of solutions to the generalized Hartree equation by the dynamic rescaling method indicates that the $Q_{1,0}$ is the profile for the stable blow-up. In this supercritical case, we obtain the blow-up rate without any correction. This blow-up happens at the focusing level $10^{-5}$, and thus, numerically observable (unlike the $L^2$-critical case).
In summary, we find that the results are similar to the behavior of stable blowup dynamics in the corresponding NLS settings. Consequently, one may expect that the form of the nonlinearity in the Schrödinger-type equations is not essential in stable blow-up.

We next extend the local theory to global: for small data we obtain global in time existence and for initial data with positive energy and certain size of variance we show the finite time blow-up (blow-up criterion). Both of these results hold regardless of the criticality of the equation. In the intercritical setting the criterion produces blow-up solutions with the initial values above the mass-energy threshold. We conclude with examples showing currently known thresholds for global vs. finite time behavior.

We define the vector-valued, matrix-weighted function spaces $\dot{F}^{αq}_p(W)$ (homogeneous) and $F^{αq}_p(W)$ (inhomogeneous) on $\mathbb{R}^n$, for $α\in \mathbb{R}$, $0<p<\infty$, $0<q \leq \infty$, with the matrix weight $W$ belonging to the $A_p$ class. For $1<p<\infty$, we show that $L^p(W) = \dot{F}^{0 2}_p(W)$, and, for $k \in \mathbb{N}$, that $F^{k 2}_p(W)$ coincides with the matrix-weighted Sobolev space $L^p_k(W)$, thereby obtaining Littlewood-Paley characterizations of $L^p(W)$ and $L^p_k (W)$. We show that a vector-valued function belongs to $\dot{F}^{αq}_p(W)$ if and only if its wavelet or $\varphi$-transform coefficients belong to an associated sequence space $\dot{f}^{αq}_p(W)$. We also characterize these spaces in terms of reducing operators associated to $W$.

In this work we make an initial attempt towards this goal. We first investigate the $H^1$ local wellposedness and small data theory. We then, in the intercritical regime ($0<s<1$), classify the behavior of $H^1$ solutions under the mass-energy assumption $\mathcal{ME}[u_0]<1$, identifying the sharp threshold for global versus finite time solutions via the sharp constant of the corresponding convolution type Gagliardo-Nirenberg interpolation inequality (note that the uniqueness of a ground state is not known in the general case). In particular, depending on the size of the initial mass and gradient, solutions will either exist for all time and scatter in $H^1$, or blow up in finite time or diverge along an infinity time sequence. To either obtain $H^1$ scattering or divergence to infinity, in this paper we employ the well-known concentration compactness and rigidity method of Kenig-Merle [36] with the novelty of studying the nonlocal nonlinear potential given via convolution with negative powers of $|x|$ and different, including fractional, powers of nonlinearities.

We prove that near-threshold negative energy solutions to the 2D cubic ($L^2$-critical) focusing Zakharov-Kuznetsov (ZK) equation blow-up in finite or infinite time. The proof consists of several steps. First, we show that if the blow-up conclusion is false, there are negative energy solutions arbitrarily close to the threshold that are globally bounded in $H^1$ and are spatially localized, uniformly in time. In the second step, we show that such solutions must in fact be exact remodulations of the ground state, and hence, have zero energy, which is a contradiction. This second step, a nonlinear Liouville theorem, is proved by contradiction, with a limiting argument producing a nontrivial solution to a (linear) linearized ZK equation obeying uniform-in-time spatial localization. Such nontrivial linear solutions are excluded by a local-viral space-time estimate. The general framework of the argument is modeled on Merle [29] and Martel & Merle [24], who treated the 1D problem of the $L^2$-critical gKdV equation. Several new features are introduced here to handle the 2D ZK case.

First, we show that in dimensions $d=4$ to $d=12$ generic blow-up behavior confirms the "log-log" regime in our numerical simulations, including the log-log rate and the convergence of the blow-up profiles to the rescaled ground state; this matches the description of the stable blow-up regime in the dimension $d =2$ (for the 2d cubic NLS equation).
Next, we address the question of rigorous justification of the "log-log" dynamics in higher dimensions ($d \geq5)$, at least for the initial data with the mass slightly larger than the mass of the ground state, for which the spectral conjecture has yet to be proved, see [34] and [10]. We give a numerically-assisted proof of the spectral property for the dimensions from $d=5$ to $d=12$, and a modification of it in dimensions $2 \leq d \leq 12$. This, combined with previous results of Merle-Raphaël, proves the "log-log" stable blow-up regime in dimensions $d \leq 10$ and radially stable for $d \leq 12$.

This matches the situation with the critical gKdV equation, proved in 2001 by Martel and Merle in [22]. While the general strategy follows [22], the two dimensional case creates several difficulties and to deal with them, we design a new virial-type quantity, revisit monotonicity properties and, most importantly, develop new pointwise decay estimates, which can be useful in other contexts.

We investigate solutions above the energy (or mass-energy) threshold. In our first result, we extend the known scattering versus blow-up dichotomy above that threshold for finite variance solutions in the energy-subcritical and energy-critical regimes, obtaining scattering and blow-up criteria for solutions with arbitrarily large mass and energy. As a consequence, we characterize the behavior of the ground state initial data modulated by a quadratic phase. Our second result gives two blow up criteria, which are also applicable in the energy-supercritical NLS setting. We finish with various examples illustrating our results.

Such dynamics were originally proposed heuristically by Degtyarev-Zakharov-Rudakov (1975) and independently later in Holmer-Roudenko (2007), where it was demonstrated to be consistent with all conservation laws of this equation. In the latter paper, it was proposed as a solution that would yield divergence of the $L_x^3$ norm within the "wide" radius $\sim |\nabla u(t)|_{L_x^2}^{-1/2}$ but not within the "tight" radius $\sim |\nabla u(t)|_{L_x^2}^{-2}$, the second being the rate of contraction of self-similar blow-up solutions observed numerically and described in detail in Chapter 7 of Sulem-Sulem (1998).

As an application of the $d=1$ result, we construct an open subset of initial data in the radial energy space $H^1_{rad}(\mathbb{R}^3)$ with corresponding solutions that blow-up on a sphere at positive radius for the 3d quintic ($\dot H^1$-critical) focusing NLS equation $i\partial_tu + Δu + |u|^4u=0$. This improves Raphaël-Szeftel (2009), where an open subset in $H^3_{rad}(\mathbb{R}^3)$ is obtained. The method of proof can be summarized as follows: on the whole space, high frequencies above the blow-up scale are controlled by the bilinear Strichartz estimates. On the other hand, outside the blow-up core, low frequencies are controlled by finite speed of propagation.

Solutions to the nonlinear problem with small initial data in $L^2$ are globally defined and belong to the same global $L^p$ space. In this work we show that the maximum of the $L^p$ norm is attained for a given small mass. In addition, in 1D and 2D, we show that the maximizer is unique and obtain a precise estimate of the maximum. We consider solutions $u$ to the 3d nonlinear Schrödinger equation $i\partial_t u + Δu + |u|^2u=0$. In particular, we are interested in finding criteria on the initial data $u_0$ that predict the asymptotic behavior of $u(t)$, e.g., whether $u(t)$ blows-up in finite time, exists globally in time but behaves like a linear solution for large times (scatters), or exists globally in time but does not scatter. This question has been resolved (at least for $H^1$ data) if $M[u]E[u]\leq M[Q]E[Q]$, where $M[u]$ and $E[u]$ denote the mass and energy of $u$, and $Q$ denotes the ground state solution to $-Q+ΔQ +|Q|^2Q=0$. Here, we prove a new sufficient condition for blow-up using an interpolation type inequality and the virial identity that is applicable to certain initial data satisfying $M[u]E[u]>M[Q]E[Q]$. Our condition is similar to one obtained by Lushnikov (1995) but our method allows for an adaptation to radial, infinite-variance initial data that can be stated conceptually: for real initial data, if a certain fraction of the mass is contained in the unit ball, then blow-up occurs. We also show analytically (if one takes the numerically computed value of $\|Q\|_{\dot H^{1/2}}$) that there exist Gaussian initial data $u_0$ with negative quadratic phase such that $\|u_0\|_{\dot H^{1/2}} < \|Q\|_{\dot H^{1/2}}$ but the solution $u(t)$ blows-up. We conclude with several numerically computed examples.

Secondly, we classify solutions at this threshold and obtain that up to \dot{H}^{1/2} symmetries, they behave exactly as the above three special solutions, or scatter and blow up in both time directions as the solutions below the mass-energy threshold. These results are obtained by studying the spectral properties of the linearized Schroedinger operator in this mass-supercritical case, establishing relevant modulational stability and careful analysis of the exponentially decaying solutions to the linearized equation.

Our new scale covers spaces with variable exponent as well as spaces of variable smoothness that have been studied in recent years. Vector-valued maximal inequalities do not work in the generality which we pursue, and an alternate approach is thus developed. Applying it, we give molecular and atomic decomposition results and show that our space is well-defined, i.e., independent of the choice of basis functions.
As in the classical case, a unified scale of spaces permits clearer results in cases where smoothness and integrability interact, such as Sobolev embedding and trace theorems. As an application of our decomposition, we prove optimal trace theorems in the variable indices case.

In this note, we extend the result in Holmer-Roudenko (2007) to non-radial $H^1$ data. For this, we prove a non-radial profile decomposition involving a spatial translation parameter. Then, in the spirit of Kenig-Merle (2006), we control via momentum conservation the rate of divergence of the spatial translation parameter and by a convexity argument based on a local virial identity deduce scattering. An application to the defocusing case is also mentioned.

Abstract:
We consider the problem of identifying sharp criteria under which radial $H^1$ (finite energy) solutions to the focusing 3d cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) $i\partial_t u + Δu + |u|^2u=0$ scatter, i.e. approach the solution to a linear Schrödinger equation as $t\to \pm \infty$. The criteria is expressed in terms of the scale-invariant quantities $\|u_0\|_{L^2}\|\nabla u_0\|_{L^2}$ and $M[u]E[u]$, where $u_0$ denotes the initial data, and $M[u]$ and $E[u]$ denote the (conserved in time) mass and energy of the corresponding solution $u(t)$. The focusing NLS possesses a soliton solution $e^{it}Q(x)$, where $Q$ is the ground-state solution to a nonlinear elliptic equation, and we prove that if $M[u]E[u]<M[Q]E[Q]$ and $\|u_0\|_{L^2}\|\nabla u_0\|_{L^2} < \|Q\|_{L^2}\|\nabla Q\|_{L^2}$, then the solution $u(t)$ is globally well-posed and scatters. This condition is sharp in the sense that the soliton solution $e^{it}Q(x)$, for which equality in these conditions is obtained, is global but does not scatter. We further show that if $M[u]E[u]<M[Q]E[Q]$ and $\|u_0\|_{L^2}\|\nabla u_0\|_{L^2} > \|Q\|_{L^2}\|\nabla Q\|_{L^2}$, then the solution blows-up in finite time. The technique employed is parallel to that employed by Kenig-Merle \cite{KM06a} in their study of the energy-critical NLS.

For the 3d cubic nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation, which has critical (scaling) norms $L^3$ and $\dot H^{1/2}$, we first prove a result establishing sufficient conditions for global existence and sufficient conditions for finite-time blow-up. For the rest of the paper, we focus on the study of finite-time radial blow-up solutions, and prove a result on the concentration of the $L^3$ norm at the origin. Two disparate possibilities emerge, one which coincides with solutions typically observed in numerical experiments that consist of a specific bump profile with maximum at the origin and focus toward the origin at rate $\sim(T-t)^{1/2}$, where $T>0$ is the blow-up time. For the other possibility, we propose the existence of ``contracting sphere blow-up solutions'', i.e. those that concentrate on a sphere of radius $\sim (T-t)^{1/3}$, but focus towards this sphere at a faster rate $\sim (T-t)^{2/3}$. These conjectured solutions are analyzed through heuristic arguments and shown (at this level of precision) to be consistent with all conservation laws of the equation.
