We present a new hybrid semi-implicit finite volume / finite element numerical scheme for the solution of incompressible and weakly compressible media. From the continuum mechanics model proposed by Godunov, Peshkov and Romenski (GPR), we derive the incompressible GPR formulation as well as a weakly compressible GPR system. As for the original GPR model, the new formulations are able to describe different media, from elastoplastic solids to viscous fluids, depending on the values set for the model's relaxation parameters. Then, we propose a new numerical method for the solution of both models based on the splitting of the original systems into three subsystems: one containing the convective part and non-conservative products, a second subsystem for the source terms of the distortion tensor and heat flux equations and, finally, a pressure subsystem. In the first stage of the algorithm, the transport subsystem is solved by employing an explicit finite volume method, while the source terms are solved implicitly. Next, the pressure subsystem is implicitly discretised using finite elements. Within this methodology, unstructured grids are employed, with the pressure defined in the primal grid and the rest of the variables computed in the dual grid. To evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme, a numerical convergence analysis is carried out, which confirms the second order of accuracy in space. A wide range of benchmarks is reproduced for the incompressible and weakly compressible cases, considering both solid and fluid media. These results demonstrate the good behaviour and robustness of the proposed scheme in a variety of scenarios and conditions.

We present a new second order accurate structure-preserving finite volume scheme for the solution of the compressible barotropic two-phase model of Romenski et. al in multiple space dimensions. The governing equations fall into the wider class of symmetric hyperbolic and thermodynamically compatible (SHTC) systems and consist of a set of first-order hyperbolic partial differential equations (PDE). In the absence of algebraic source terms, the model is subject to a curl-free constraint for the relative velocity between the two phases. The main objective of this paper is, therefore, to preserve this structural property exactly also at the discrete level. The new numerical method is based on a staggered grid arrangement where the relative velocity field is stored in the cell vertexes while all the remaining variables are stored in the cell centers. This allows the definition of discretely compatible gradient and curl operators, which ensure that the discrete curl errors of the relative velocity field remain zero up to machine precision. A set of numerical results confirms this property also experimentally.

This paper presents a high-order discontinuous Galerkin finite element method to solve the barotropic version of the conservative symmetric hyperbolic and thermodynamically compatible (SHTC) model of compressible two-phase flow, introduced by Romenski et al., in multiple space dimensions. In the absence of algebraic source terms, the model is endowed with a curl constraint on the relative velocity field. In this paper, the hyperbolicity of the system is studied for the first time in the multidimensional case, showing that the original model is only weakly hyperbolic in multiple space dimensions. To restore strong hyperbolicity, two different methodologies are used: i) the explicit symmetrization of the system, which can be achieved by adding terms that contain linear combinations of the curl involution, similar to the Godunov-Powell terms in the MHD equations; ii) the use of the hyperbolic generalized Lagrangian multiplier (GLM) curl-cleaning approach forwarded. The PDE system is solved using a high-order ADER discontinuous Galerkin method with a posteriori sub-cell finite volume limiter to deal with shock waves and the steep gradients in the volume fraction commonly appearing in the solutions of this type of model. To illustrate the performance of the method, several different test cases and benchmark problems have been run, showing the high-order of the scheme and the good agreement when compared to reference solutions computed with other well-known methods.

We present a new divergence-free and well-balanced hybrid FV/FE scheme for the incompressible viscous and resistive MHD equations on unstructured mixed-element meshes in 2 and 3 space dimensions. The equations are split into subsystems. The pressure is defined on the vertices of the primary mesh, while the velocity field and the normal components of the magnetic field are defined on an edge-based/face-based dual mesh in two and three space dimensions, respectively. This allows to account for the divergence-free conditions of the velocity field and of the magnetic field in a rather natural manner. The non-linear convective and the viscous terms are solved at the aid of an explicit FV scheme, while the magnetic field is evolved in a divergence-free manner via an explicit FV method based on a discrete form of the Stokes law in the edges/faces of each primary element. To achieve higher order of accuracy, a pw-linear polynomial is reconstructed for the magnetic field, which is guaranteed to be divergence-free via a constrained L2 projection. The pressure subsystem is solved implicitly at the aid of a classical continuous FE method in the vertices of the primary mesh. In order to maintain non-trivial stationary equilibrium solutions of the governing PDE system exactly, which are assumed to be known a priori, each step of the new algorithm takes the known equilibrium solution explicitly into account so that the method becomes exactly well-balanced. This paper includes a very thorough study of the lid-driven MHD cavity problem in the presence of different magnetic fields. We finally present long-time simulations of Soloviev equilibrium solutions in several simplified 3D tokamak configurations even on very coarse unstructured meshes that, in general, do not need to be aligned with the magnetic field lines.

We present a novel second-order semi-implicit hybrid finite volume / finite element (FV/FE) scheme for the numerical solution of the incompressible and weakly compressible Navier-Stokes equations on moving unstructured meshes using an Arbitrary-Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) formulation. The scheme is based on a suitable splitting of the governing PDE into subsystems and employs staggered grids, where the pressure is defined on the primal simplex mesh, while the velocity and the remaining flow quantities are defined on an edge-based staggered dual mesh. The key idea of the scheme is to discretize the nonlinear convective and viscous terms using an explicit FV scheme that employs the space-time divergence form of the governing equations on moving space-time control volumes. For the convective terms, an ALE extension of the Ducros flux on moving meshes is introduced, which is kinetic energy preserving and stable in the energy norm when adding suitable numerical dissipation terms. Finally, the pressure equation of the Navier-Stokes system is solved on the new mesh configuration using a continuous FE method, with $\mathbb{P}_1$ Lagrange elements.
The ALE hybrid FV/FE method is applied to several incompressible test problems ranging from non-hydrostatic free surface flows over a rising bubble to flows over an oscillating cylinder and an oscillating ellipse. Via the simulation of a circular explosion problem on a moving mesh, we show that the scheme applied to the weakly compressible Navier-Stokes equations is able to capture weak shock waves, rarefactions and moving contact discontinuities. We show that our method is particularly efficient for the simulation of weakly compressible flows in the low Mach number limit, compared to a fully explicit ALE scheme

In this paper a new hybrid semi-implicit finite volume / finite element (FV/FE) scheme is presented for the numerical solution of the compressible Euler and Navier-Stokes equations at all Mach numbers on unstructured staggered meshes in two and three space dimensions. The chosen grid arrangement consists of a primal simplex mesh composed of triangles or tetrahedra, and an edge-based / face-based staggered dual mesh. The governing equations are discretized in conservation form. The nonlinear convective terms of the equations, as well as the viscous stress tensor and the heat flux, are discretized on the dual mesh at the aid of an explicit local ADER finite volume scheme, while the implicit pressure terms are discretized at the aid of a continuous $\mathbb{P}^{1}$ finite element method on the nodes of the primal mesh. In the zero Mach number limit, the new scheme automatically reduces to the hybrid FV/FE approach forwarded in \cite{BFTVC17} for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. As such, the method is asymptotically consistent with the incompressible limit of the governing equations and can therefore be applied to flows at all Mach numbers. Due to the chosen semi-implicit discretization, the CFL restriction on the time step is only based on the magnitude of the flow velocity and not on the sound speed, hence the method is computationally efficient at low Mach numbers. In the chosen discretization, the only unknown is the scalar pressure field at the new time step. Furthermore, the resulting pressure system is symmetric and positive definite and can therefore be very efficiently solved with a matrix-free conjugate gradient method.
In order to assess the capabilities of the new scheme, we show computational results for a large set of benchmark problems that range from the quasi incompressible low Mach number regime to compressible flows with shock waves.
