Schwarz lemma for real harmonic functions onto surfaces with non-negative Gaussian curvature
Abstract: Assume that $f$ is a real $ρ$-harmonic function of the unit disk $\mathbb{D}$ onto the interval $(-1,1)$, where $ρ(u,v)=R(u)$ is a metric defined in the infinite strip $(-1,1)\times \mathbb{R}$. Then we prove that $|\nabla f(z)|(1-|z|^2)\le \frac{4}π(1-f(z)^2)$ for all $z\in\mathbb{D}$, provided that $ρ$ has a non-negative Gaussian curvature. This extends several results in the field and answers t… ▽ More

An intertwined Cauchy--Schwarz-type inequality based on a Lagrange-type identity
Abstract: Based on an apparently new Lagrange-type identity, a Cauchy--Schwarz-type inequality is proved. The mentioned identity is obtained by using certain ``macro'' variables; it is hoped that such a method can be used to prove or produce other identities and inequalities.

What Intraclass Covariance Structures Can Symmetric Bernoulli Random Variables Have?
Abstract: The covariance matrix of random variables $X_1,\dots,X_n$ is said to have an intraclass covariance structure if the variances of all the $X_i$'s are the same and all the pairwise covariances of the $X_i$'s are the same. We provide a possibly surprising characterization of such covariance matrices in the case when the $X_i$'s are symmetric Bernoulli random variables.

Exact upper and lower bounds on the difference between the arithmetic and geometric means
Abstract: Let $X$ denote a nonnegative random variable with $\mathsf{E} X<\infty$. Upper and lower bounds on $\mathsf{E} X-\exp\mathsf{E}\ln X$ are obtained, which are exact, in terms of $V_X$ and $E_X$ for the upper bound and in terms of $V_X$ and $F_X$ for the lower bound, where $V_X:=\mathsf{Var}\sqrt X$, $E_X:=\mathsf{E}\big(\sqrt X-\sqrt{m_X}\,\big)^2$,… ▽ More

Convex cones of generalized multiply monotone functions and the dual cones
Abstract: Let $n$ and $k$ be nonnegative integers such that $1\le k\le n+1$. The convex cone $\mathcal{F}_+^{k:n}$ of all functions $f$ on an arbitrary interval $I\subseteq\mathbb{R}$ whose derivatives $f^{(j)}$ of orders $j=k-1,\dots,n$ are nondecreasing is characterized in terms of extreme rays of the cone $\mathcal{F}_+^{k:n}$. An optimal three-way stable and monotonic spectrum of bounds on quantiles: a spectrum of coherent measures of financial risk and economic inequality
Abstract: A certain spectrum, indexed by a\in[0,\infty], of upper bounds P_a(X;x) on the tail probability P(X\geq x), with P_0(X;x)=P(X\geq x) and P_\infty(X;x) being the best possible exponential upper bound on P(X\geq x), is shown to be stable and monotonic in a, x, and X, where x is a real number and X is a random variable. The bounds P_a(X;x) are optimal values in certain minimization problems. The corr… ▽ More

Characteristic function of the positive part of a random variable and related results, with applications
Abstract: Let $X$ be an arbitrary real-valued random variable (r.v.), with the characteristic function (c.f.) $f$. Integral expressions for the c.f.\ of the r.v.'s $\max(0,X)$ in terms of $f$ are given, as well as other related results. Applications to stock options and random walks are presented. In particular, a more explicit and compact form of Spitzer's identity is obtained.

A necessary and sufficient condition on the stability of the infimum of convex functions
Abstract: Let us say that a convex function f\colon C\to[-\infty,\infty] on a convex set C\subseteq\R is infimum-stable if, for any sequence (f_n) of convex functions f_n\colon C\to[-\infty,\infty] converging to f pointwise, one has \inf_C f_n\to\inf_C f. A simple necessary and sufficient condition for a convex function to be infimum-stable is given. The same condition remains necessary and sufficient if on… ▽ More

(Quasi)additivity properties of the Legendre--Fenchel transform and its inverse, with applications in probability
Abstract: The notion of the Hölder convolution is introduced. The main result is that, under general conditions on functions L_1, ..., L_n, the function inverse to the Legendre--Fenchel transform of the Hölder convolution of L_1, ..., L_n coincides with the sum of the inverses of the Legendre--Fenchel transforms of the individual functions L_1, ..., L_n. More on the nonuniform Berry--Esseen bound
Abstract: Certain smoothing inequalities were proposed in the recent paper posted on arXiv at arxiv:1301.2828 in order to lessen the very large gap between the best correctly established upper and lower bounds on the constant factor in the nonuniform Berry-Esseen bound. As an illustration of the possible uses of those inequalities, a quick proof of Nagaev's classical nonuniform bound was given there. Here w… ▽ More

On the nonuniform Berry--Esseen bound
Abstract: Due to the effort of a number of authors, the value c_u of the absolute constant factor in the uniform Berry--Esseen (BE) bound for sums of independent random variables has been gradually reduced to 0.4748 in the iid case and 0.5600 in the general case; both these values were recently obtained by Shevtsova. On the other hand, Esseen had shown that c_u cannot be less than 0.4097. Thus, the gap fact… ▽ More
