We start by identifying a class of pseudo-differential operators, generated by the set of continuous negative definite functions, that are in the weak similarity (WS) orbit of the self-adjoint log-Bessel operator on the Euclidean space. These WS relations turn out to be useful to first characterize a core for each operator in this class, which enables us to show that they generate a class, denoted by $\mathscr{P}$, of non-self-adjoint $\mathcal{C}_0$-contraction positive semigroups. Up to a homeomorphism, $\mathscr{P}$ includes, as fundamental objects in probability theory, the family of self-similar Markov semigroups on $\mathbb{R}_+^d$. Relying on the WS orbit, we characterize the nature of the spectrum of each element in $\mathscr{P}$ that is used in their spectral representation which depends on analytical properties of the Bernstein-gamma functions defined from the associated negative definite functions, and, it is either the point, residual, approximate or continuous spectrum. We proceed by providing a spectral representation of each element in $\ccP$ which is expressed in terms of Fourier multiplier operators and valid, at least, on a dense domain of a natural weighted $L^2$-space. Surprisingly, the domain is the full Hilbert space when the spectrum is the residual one, something which seems to be noticed for the first time in the literature. We end up the paper by presenting a series of examples for which all spectral components are computed explicitly in terms of special functions or recently introduced power series.

The purpose of this paper is to carry out an in-depth analysis of the intriguing van Dantzig problem which consists on characterizing the set $\mathbb{D}$ of analytic characteristic functions $\mathcal{F}$ which remains stable by the action of the map** $V\mathcal{F}(t)=1/\mathcal{F}(it)$, $t\in\mathbb{R}$. % is also a characteristic function. We start by observing that the celebrated Lee-Yang property, appearing in statistical mechanics and quantum field theory, and the Riemann hypothesis can be both rephrased in terms of the van Dantzig problem, and, more specifically, in terms of the set $\mathbb{D}_L \subset \mathbb{D}$ of real-valued characteristic functions that belong to the Laguerre-Pólya class. Motivated by these facts, we proceed by identifying several non-trivial closure properties of the set $\mathbb{D}$ and $\mathbb{D}_L$. This not only revisits but also, by means of probabilistic techniques, deepens the fascinating studies of the set of even characteristic functions in the Laguerre-Pólya class carried out by Pólya, de Bruijn, Lukacs, Newman and more recently by Newman and Wu, among others. We continue by providing a new class of entire functions that belong to the set $\mathbb{D}$ but not necessarily to $\mathbb{D}_L$, offering the first examples outside the set $\mathbb{D}_L$. This class, which is derived from some entire functions introduced by the second author, is in bijection with a subset of continuous negative-definite functions and includes several notable generalized hypergeometric-type functions. Besides identifying the characteristic functions, we also manage to characterize the pair of the corresponding van Dantzig random variables revealing that one of them is infinitely divisible. Finally, we investigate the possibility that the Riemann $ξ$ function belongs to this class.

To overcome some limits of classical neuronal models, we propose a Markovian generalization of the classical model based on Jacobi processes by introducing downwards jumps to describe the activity of a single neuron. The statistical analysis of inter-spike intervals is performed by studying the first-passage times of the proposed Markovian Jacobi process with jumps through a constant boundary. In particular, we characterize its Laplace transform which is expressed in terms of some generalization of hypergeometric functions that we introduce, and deduce a closed-form expression for its expectation. Our approach, which is original in the context of first passage time problems, relies on intertwining relations between the semigroups of the classical Jacobi process and its generalization, which have been recently established in [11]. A numerical investigation of the firing rate of the considered neuron is performed for some choices of the involved parameters and of the jumps distributions.

We provide a notion of solution for this equation and we study well-posedness under Dirichlet conditions outside the domain. A maximum principle is proved and used to derive uniqueness and continuity with respect to the initial datum of the solutions of the Dirichlet problem. Existence is proved by showing a stochastic representation based on the delayed Brownian motion killed on the boundary. Related properties on crossing probabilities of the delayed Brownian motion are obtained. The asymptotic behaviour of the mean square displacement of the process is determined, showing that the diffusive behaviour is anomalous.

The first aim of this paper is to introduce a class of Markov chains on $\mathbb{Z}_+$ which are discrete self-similar in the sense that their semigroups satisfy an invariance property expressed in terms of a discrete random dilation operator. After showing that this latter property requires the chains to be upward skip-free, we first establish a gateway relation, a concept introduced in [26], between the semigroup of such chains and the one of spectrally negative self-similar Markov processes on $\mathbb{R}_+$. As a by-product, we prove that each of these Markov chains, after an appropriate scaling, converge in the Skorohod metric, to the associated self-similar Markov process. By a linear perturbation of the generator of these Markov chains, we obtain a class of ergodic Markov chains, which are non-reversible. By means of intertwining and interweaving relations, where the latter was recently introduced in [27], we derive several deep analytical properties of such ergodic chains including the description of the spectrum, the spectral expansion of their semigroups, the study of their convergence to equilibrium in the $Φ$-entropy sense as well as their hypercontractivity property.

We also look into the problem of estimating the integral functionals from discrete observations for this class. In the last part of this paper, we investigate a particular similarity orbit of reversible Markov kernels, that we call the pure birth orbit, and analyze various possibly non-reversible variants of classical birth-death processes in this orbit.

In this paper, we introduce the (resp. biorthogonal) spectral projections correlation functions which are expressed in terms of projections into the eigenspaces of $\mathbf{P}_t$ (resp. and of its adjoint in the weighted Hilbert space $L^2(ν)$). We obtain closed-form expressions involving eigenvalues, the condition number and/or the angle between the projections in the following different situations: when $\mathbf{X}=X$ with $X=(X_t)_{t \geq 0}$ is a Markov process, $\mathbf{X}$ is the subordination of $X$ in the sense of Bochner, and $\mathbf X$ is a non-Markovian process which is obtained by time-changing $X$ with an inverse of a subordinator. It turns out that these spectral projections correlation functions have different expressions with respect to these classes of processes which enables to identify substantial and deep properties about their dynamics. This interesting fact can be used to design original statistical tests to make inferences, for example, about the path properties of the process (presence of jumps), distance from symmetry (self-adjoint or non-self-adjoint) and short-to-long-range dependence. To reveal the usefulness of our results, we apply them to a class of non-self-adjoint Markov semigroups studied in Patie and Savov [28], and then time-change by subordinators and their inverses.

In this paper, we introduce and study non-local Jacobi operators, which generalize the classical (local) Jacobi operators. We show that these operators extend to generators of ergodic Markov semigroups with unique invariant probability measures and study their spectral and convergence properties. In particular, we derive a series expansion of the semigroup in terms of explicitly defined polynomials, which generalize the classical Jacobi orthogonal polynomials. In addition, we give a complete characterization of the spectrum of the non-self-adjoint generator and semigroup. We show that the variance decay of the semigroup is hypocoercive with explicit constants, which provides a natural generalization of the spectral gap estimate. After a random warm-up time, the semigroup also decays exponentially in entropy and is both hypercontractive and ultracontractive. Our proofs hinge on the development of commutation identities, known as intertwining relations, between local and non-local Jacobi operators and semigroups, with the local objects serving as reference points for transferring properties from the local to the non-local case.

The aim of this paper is to offer an original and comprehensive spectral theoretical approach to the study of convergence to equilibrium, and in particular of the hypocoercivity phenomenon, for contraction semigroups in Hilbert spaces. Our approach rests on a commutation relationship for linear operators known as intertwining, and we utilize this identity to transfer spectral information from a known, reference semigroup $\tilde{P} = (e^{-t\tilde{\mathbf A}})_{t \geq 0}$ to a target semigroup $P$ which is the object of study. This allows us to obtain conditions under which $P$ satisfies a hypocoercive estimate with exponential decay rate given by the spectral gap of $\tilde{\mathbf A}$. Along the way we also develop a functional calculus involving the non-self-adjoint resolution of identity induced by the intertwining relations. We apply these results in a general Hilbert space setting to two cases: degenerate, hypoelliptic Ornstein-Uhlenbeck semigroups on $\mathbb R^d$, and non-local Jacobi semigroups on $[0,1]^d$, which have been recently introduced and studied for $d=1$. In both cases we obtain hypocoercive estimates and are able to explicitly identify the hypocoercive constants

Each eigenfunction turns out to be the Laplace transform of the right-inverse of a non-decreasing self-similar Markov process associated via the so-called Lamperti map** to this Bernstein function. We start by providing an explicit characterization and analytical properties, including the persistence phenomena, of the distribution of the extinction time $\mathbb{T}$ of a class of non-Markovian self-similar stochastic processes with two-sided jumps that we introduce as a stochastic time-change of Markovian self-similar processes. For a suitably chosen time-changed, we observe, for classes with two-sided jumps, the following surprising facts. On the one hand, all the $\mathbb{T}$'s within a class have the same law which we identify in a simple form for all classes and reduces, in the spectrally positive case, to the Fréchet distribution. On the other hand, each of its distribution corresponds to the law of an extinction time of a single Markov process without positive jumps, leaving the interpretation that the time-changed has annihilated the effect of positive jumps. The example of the non-Markovian processes associated to Lévy stable processes is detailed.

By providing instances of approximation of linear diffusions by birth-death processes, Feller [13], has offered an original path from the discrete world to the continuous one. In this paper, by identifying an intertwining relationship between squared Bessel processes and some linear birth-death processes, we show that this connection is in fact more intimate and goes in the two directions. As by-products, we identify some properties enjoyed by the birth-death family that are inherited from squared Bessel processes. For instance, these include a discrete self-similarity property and a discrete analogue of the beta-gamma algebra. We proceed by explaining that the same gateway identity also holds for the corresponding ergodic Laguerre semi-groups. It follows again that the continuous and discrete versions are more closely related than thought before, and this enables to pass information from one semi-group to the other one.

We consider the Stieltjes moment problem for the Berg-Urbanik semigroups which form a class of multiplicative convolution semigroups on $\mathbb{R}_+$ that is in bijection with the set of Bernstein functions. Berg and Durán proved that the law of such semigroups is moment determinate (at least) up to time $t=2$, and, for the Bernstein function $φ(u)=u$, Berg made the striking observation that for time $t>2$ the law of this semigroup is moment indeterminate. We extend these works by estimating the threshold time $\scr{T}_φ\in [2,\infty]$ that it takes for the law of such Berg-Urbanik semigroups to transition from moment determinacy to moment indeterminacy in terms of simple properties of the underlying Bernstein function $φ$, such as its Blumenthal-Getoor index. One of the several strategies we implement to deal with the different cases relies on a non-classical Abelian type criterion for the moment problem, recently proved by the authors. To implement this approach we provide detailed information regarding distributional properties of the semigroup such as existence and smoothness of a density, and, the large asymptotic behavior for all $t > 0$ of this density along with its successive derivatives. In particular, these results, which are original in the Lévy processes literature, may be of independent interests.

In this work we develop an original and thorough analysis of the (non)-smoothness properties of the semigroups, and their heat kernels, associated to a large class of continuous state branching processes with immigration. Our approach is based on an in-depth analysis of the regularity of the absolutely continuous part of the invariant measure combined with a substantial refinement of Ogura's spectral expansion of the transition kernels. In particular, we find new representations for the eigenfunctions and eigenmeasures that allow us to derive delicate uniform bounds that are useful for establishing the uniform convergence of the spectral representation of the semigroup acting on linear spaces that we identify. We detail several examples which illustrate the variety of smoothness properties that CBI transition kernels may enjoy and also reveal that our results are sharp. The aim of this paper is to provide some new criteria for the Stieltjes moment problem. We first give a Tauberian type criterion for moment indeterminacy that is expressed purely in terms of the asymptotic behavior of the moment sequence (and its extension to imaginary lines). Under an additional assumption this provides a converse to the classical Carleman's criterion, thus yielding an equivalent condition for moment determinacy. We also provide a criterion for moment determinacy that only involves the large asymptotic behavior of the distribution (or of the density if it exists), which can be thought of as an Abelian counterpart to the previous Tauberian type result. This latter criterion generalizes Hardy's condition for determinacy, and under some further assumptions yields a converse to the Pedersen's refinement of the celebrated Krein's theorem. The proofs utilize non-classical Tauberian results for moment sequences that are analogues to the ones developed in Feigin and Yashchin, and, Balkema et al. for the bi-lateral Laplace transforms in the context of asymptotically parabolic functions. We illustrate our results by studying the time-dependent moment problem for the law of log-Lévy processes viewed as a generalization of the log-normal distribution. Along the way, we derive the large asymptotic behavior of the density of spectrally-negative Lévy processes having a Gaussian component, which may be of independent interest.

In this paper, we start by showing that the intertwining relationship between two minimal Markov semigroups acting on Hilbert spaces implies that any recurrent extensions, in the sense of Itô, of these semigroups satisfy the same intertwining identity. Under mild additional assumptions on the intertwining operator, we prove that the converse also holds. This connection, which relies on the representation of excursion quantities as developed by Fitzsimmons and Getoor, enables us to give an interesting probabilistic interpretation of intertwining relationships between Markov semigroups via excursion theory: two such recurrent extensions that intertwine share, under an appropriate normalization, the same local time at the boundary point. Moreover, in the case when one of the (non-self-adjoint) semigroup intertwines with the one of a quasi-diffusion, we obtain an extension of Krein's theory of strings byshowing that its densely defined spectral measure is absolutely continuous with respect to the measure appearing in the Stieltjes representation of the Laplace exponent of the inverse local time. Finally, we illustrate our results with the class of positive self-similar Markov semigroups and also the reflected generalized Laguerre semigroups. For the latter, we obtain their spectral decomposition and provide, under some conditions, a perturbed spectral gap estimate for its convergence to equilibrium.

In this paper, we provide the spectral decomposition in Hilbert space of the $\mathcal{C}_0$-semigroup $P$ and its adjoint $\hatP$ having as generator, respectively, the Caputo and the right-sided Riemann-Liouville fractional derivatives of index $1<α<2$. These linear operators, which are non-local and non-self-adjoint, appear in many recent studies in applied mathematics and also arise as the infinitesimal generators of some substantial processes such as the reflected spectrally negative $α$-stable process. Our approach relies on intertwining relations that we establish between these semigroups and the semigroup of a Bessel type process whose generator is a self-adjoint second order differential operator. In particular, from this commutation relation, we characterize the positive real axis as the continuous point spectrum of $P$ and provide a power series representation of the corresponding eigenfunctions. We also identify the positive real axis as the residual spectrum of the adjoint operator $\hatP$ and elucidates its role in the spectral decomposition of these operators. By resorting to the concept of continuous frames, we proceed by investigating the domain of the spectral operators and derive two representations for the heat kernels of these semigroups. As a by-product, we also obtain regularity properties for these latter and also for the solution of the associated Cauchy problem.

We study the equation $M_Ψ(z+1)=\frac{-z}{Ψ(-z)}M_Ψ(z), M_Ψ(1)=1$ defined on a subset of the imaginary line and where $Ψ$ is a negative definite functions. Using the Wiener-Hopf method we solve this equation in a two terms product which consists of functions that extend the classical gamma function. These functions are in a bijection with Bernstein functions and for this reason we call them Bernstein-gamma functions. Via a couple of computable parameters we characterize of these functions as meromorphic functions on a complex strip. We also establish explicit and universal Stirling type asymptotic in terms of the constituting Bernstein function. The decay of $|M_Ψ(z)|$ along imaginary lines is computed. Important quantities for theoretical and applied studies are rendered accessible.
As an application we investigate the exponential functionals of Levy Processes whose Mellin transform satisfies the recurrent equation above. Although these variables have been intensively studied, our new perspective, based on a combination of probabilistic and complex analytical techniques, enables us to derive comprehensive and substantial properties and strengthen several results on the law of these random variables. These include smoothness, regularity and analytical properties, large and small asymptotic behaviour, including asymptotic expansions, bounds, and Mellin-Barnes representations for the density and its successive derivatives. We also study the weak convergence of exponential functionals on a finite time horizon when the latter expands to infinity. As a result of new factorizations of the law of the exponential functional we deliver important intertwining relation between members of the class of positive self-similar semigroups.
The derivation of our results relies on a mixture of complex-analytical and probabilistic techniques.

We provide the spectral expansion in a weighted Hilbert space of a substantial class of invariant non-self-adjoint and non-local Markov operators which appear in limit theorems for positive-valued Markov processes. We show that this class is in bijection with a subset of negative definite functions and we name it the class of generalized Laguerre semigroups. Our approach, which goes beyond the framework of perturbation theory, is based on an in-depth and original analysis of an intertwining relation that we establish between this class and a self-adjoint Markov semigroup, whose spectral expansion is expressed in terms of the classical Laguerre polynomials. As a by-product, we derive smoothness properties for the solution to the associated Cauchy problem as well as for the heat kernel. Our methodology also reveals a variety of possible decays, including the hypocoercivity type phenomena, for the speed of convergence to equilibrium for this class and enables us to provide an interpretation of these in terms of the rate of growth of the weighted Hilbert space norms of the spectral projections. Depending on the analytic properties of the aforementioned negative definite functions, we are led to implement several strategies, which require new developments in a variety of contexts, to derive precise upper bounds for these norms.

We propose a new approach to construct the eigenvalue expansion in a weighted Hilbert space of the solution to the Cauchy problem associated to Gauss-Laguerre invariant Markov semigroups that we introduce. Their generators turn out to be natural non-self-adjoint and non-local generalizations of the Laguerre differential operator. Our methods rely on intertwining relations that we establish between these semigroups and the classical Laguerre semigroup and combine with techniques based on non-harmonic analysis. As a by-product we also provide regularity properties for the semigroups as well as for their heat kernels. The biorthogonal sequences that appear in their eigenvalue expansion can be expressed in terms of sequences of polynomials, and they generalize the Laguerre polynomials. By means of a delicate saddle point method, we derive uniform asymptotic bounds that allow us to get an upper bound for their norms in weighted Hilbert spaces. We believe that this work opens a way to construct spectral expansions for more general non-self-adjoint Markov semigroups.

We start by introducing a nonlinear involution operator which maps the space of solutions of Sturm-Liouville equations into the space of solutions of the associated equations which turn out to be nonlinear ordinary differential equations. We study some algebraic and analytical properties of this involution operator as well as some properties of a two-parameter family of operators describing the set of solutions of Sturm-Liouville equations. Next, we show how a specific composition of these map**s allows to connect, by means of a simple analytical expression, the law of the first passage time of a Brownian motion over a curve to a two-parameter family of curves. We offer three different proofs of this fact which may be of independent interests. In particular, one is based on the construction of parametric time-space harmonic transforms of the law of some Gauss-Markov processes. Another one, which is of algebraic nature, relies on the Lie group symmetry methods applied to the heat equation and reveals that our two-parameter transformation is the unique non-trivial one.

In [16], under mild conditions, a Wiener-Hopf type factorization is derived for the exponential functional of proper Lévy processes. In this paper, we extend this factorization by relaxing a finite moment assumption as well as by considering the exponential functional for killed Lévy processes. As a by-product, we derive some interesting new distributional properties enjoyed by a large class of this random variable, such as the absolute continuity of its distribution and the smoothness, boundedness or complete monotonicity of its density. This type of results is then used to derive similar properties for the law of maxima and first passage time of some stable Lévy processes. Thus, for example, we show that for a large class of stable processes the first passage time has a bounded and non-increasing density on the positive half-line. We also generate many instances of integral or power series representations for the law of the exponential functional of Lévy processes with one or two-sided jumps. The proof of our main results requires different devices from the one developed in [16]. It relies in particular on a generalization of a transform recently introduced in [8] together with some extensions to killed Lévy process of Wiener-Hopf techniques.

In fact, $I_{ψ_1}$ is identified as the exponential functional of a spectrally negative (sn, for short) Lévy process. We deduce from Bertoin and Yor [Electron. Comm. Probab. 6 (2001) 95--106] the following factorization of the exponential law ${\mathbf {e}}$: \[I_φ/I_{ψ_1}\stackrel{\mathrm {(d)}}{=}{\mathbf {e}},\] where $I_{ψ_1}$ is taken to be independent of $I_φ$. We proceed by showing an identity in distribution between the entrance law of an sn self-similar positive Feller process and the reciprocal of the exponential functional of sn Lévy processes. As a by-product, we obtain some new examples of the law of the exponential functionals, a new factorization of the exponential law and some interesting distributional properties of some random variables.
