Integral representations for the joint survival functions of the cumulated components of multinomial random vectors
Abstract: This paper presents a multivariate normal integral expression for the joint survival function of the cumulated components of any multinomial random vector. This result can be viewed as a multivariate analog of Equation (7) from Carter & Pollard (2004), who improved Tusnády's inequality. Our findings are based on a crucial relationship between the joint survival function of the cumulated components… ▽ More

Central and noncentral moments of the multivariate hypergeometric distribution
Abstract: In this short note, explicit formulas are developed for the central and noncentral moments of the multivariate hypergeometric distribution. A numerical implementation is provided in Mathematica for fast evaluations. On Wilks' joint moment formulas for embedded principal minors of Wishart random matrices
Abstract: In 1934, the American statistician Samuel S. Wilks derived remarkable formulas for the joint moments of embedded principal minors of sample covariance matrices in multivariate Gaussian populations, and he used them to compute the moments of sample statistics in various applications related to multivariate linear regression. These important but little-known moment results were extended in 1963 by t… ▽ More

Asymptotics for non-degenerate multivariate $U$-statistics with estimated nuisance parameters under the null and local alternative hypotheses
Abstract: The large-sample behavior of non-degenerate multivariate $U$-statistics of arbitrary degree is investigated under the assumption that their kernel depends on parameters that can be estimated consistently. Mild regularity conditions are given which guarantee that once properly normalized, such statistics are asymptotically multivariate Gaussian both under the null hypothesis and sequences of local… ▽ More

Non-asymptotic approximations for Pearson's chi-square statistic and its application to confidence intervals for strictly convex functions of the probability weights of discrete distributions

Deficiency bounds for the multivariate inverse hypergeometric distribution
Abstract: The multivariate inverse hypergeometric (MIH) distribution is an extension of the negative multinomial (NM) model that accounts for sampling without replacement in a finite population. Even though most studies on longitudinal count data with a specific number of `failures' occur in a finite setting, the NM model is typically chosen over the more accurate MIH model. This raises the question: How mu… ▽ More

Abstract: For $m,n\in \mathbb{N}$, let $0 < α_i,β_j,λ_{ij} \leq 1$ be such that $\sum_{j=1}^n λ_{ij} = α_i$, $\sum_{i=1}^m λ_{ij} = β_j$, and $\sum_{i=1}^m α_i = \sum_{j=1}^n β_j \leq 1$. We prove that the ratio of gamma functions \begin{equation*} \hspace{-15mm}t \mapsto \frac{\prod_{i=1}^m Γ(α_i t + 1) \prod_{j=1}^n Γ(β_j t + 1)}{\prod_{i=1}^m \prod_{j=1}^n Γ(λ_{ij} t + 1)} \end{equation*} is logarithmica… ▽ More

Moments of the Riemann zeta function on short intervals of the critical line
Abstract: We show that as $T\to \infty$, for all $t\in [T,2T]$ outside of a set of measure $\mathrm{o}(T)$, $$ \int_{-(\log T)^θ}^{(\log T)^θ} |ζ(\tfrac 12 + \mathrm{i} t + \mathrm{i} h)|^β \mathrm{d} h = (\log T)^{f_θ(β) + \mathrm{o}(1)}, $$ for some explicit exponent $f_θ(β)$, where $θ> -1$ and $β> 0$. This proves an extended version of a conjecture of Fyodorov and Keating (2014). In particular, it shows… ▽ More

Goodness-of-fit tests for Laplace, Gaussian and exponential power distributions based on $λ$-th power skewness and kurtosis
Abstract: Temperature data, like many other measurements in quantitative fields, are usually modeled using a normal distribution. However, some distributions can offer a better fit while avoiding underestimation of tail event probabilities. To this point, we extend Pearson's notions of skewness and kurtosis to build a powerful family of goodness-of-fit tests based on Rao's score for the exponential power di… ▽ More

Large deviations and continuity estimates for the derivative of a random model of $\log |ζ|$ on the critical line
Abstract: In this paper, we study the random field \begin{equation*} X(h) \circeq \sum_{p \leq T} \frac{\text{Re}(U_p \, p^{-i h})}{p^{1/2}}, \quad h\in [0,1], \end{equation*} where $(U_p, \, p ~\text{primes})$ is an i.i.d. sequence of uniform random variables on the unit circle in $\mathbb{C}$. Harper (2013) showed that $(X(h), \, h\in (0,1))$ is a good model for the large values of… ▽ More

A uniform $L^1$ law of large numbers for functions of i.i.d. random variables that are translated by a consistent estimator
Abstract: We develop a new $L^1$ law of large numbers where the $i$-th summand is given by a function $h(\cdot)$ evaluated at $X_i - θ_n$, and where $θ_n \circeq θ_n(X_1,X_2,\ldots,X_n)$ is an estimator converging in probability to some parameter $θ\in \mathbb{R}$. Under broad technical conditions, the convergence is shown to hold uniformly in the set of estimators interpolating between $θ$ and another cons… ▽ More

Complete monotonicity of multinomial probabilities and its application to Bernstein estimators on the simplex
Abstract: Let $d\in \mathbb{N}$ and let $γ_i\in [0,\infty)$, $x_i\in (0,1)$ be such that $\sum_{i=1}^{d+1} γ_i = M\in (0,\infty)$ and $\sum_{i=1}^{d+1} x_i = 1$. We prove that \begin{equation*} a \mapsto \frac{Γ(aM + 1)}{\prod_{i=1}^{d+1} Γ(a γ_i + 1)} \prod_{i=1}^{d+1} x_i^{aγ_i} \end{equation*} is completely monotonic on $(0,\infty)$. Poisson-Dirichlet statistics for the extremes of a randomized Riemann zeta function
Abstract: In Arguin & Tai (2018), the authors prove the convergence of the two-overlap distribution at low temperature for a randomized Riemann zeta function on the critical line. We extend their results to prove the Ghirlanda-Guerra identities. As a consequence, we find the joint law of the overlaps under the limiting mean Gibbs measure in terms of Poisson-Dirichlet variables. It is expected that we can ad… ▽ More

Geometry of the Gibbs measure for the discrete 2D Gaussian free field with scale-dependent variance
Abstract: We continue our study of the scale-inhomogeneous Gaussian free field introduced in Arguin and Ouimet (2016). Firstly, we compute the limiting free energy on V_N and adapt a technique of Bovier and Kurkova (2004b) to determine the limiting two-overlap distribution. The adaptation was already successfully applied in the simpler case of Arguin and Zindy (2015), where the limiting free energy was comp… ▽ More

Maxima of branching random walks with piecewise constant variance
Abstract: This article extends the results of Fang & Zeitouni (2012a) on branching random walks (BRWs) with Gaussian increments in time inhomogeneous environments. We treat the case where the variance of the increments changes a finite number of times at different scales in [0,1] under a slight restriction. We find the asymptotics of the maximum up to an OP(1) error and show how the profile of the variance… ▽ More

Extremes of the two-dimensional Gaussian free field with scale-dependent variance
Abstract: In this paper, we study a random field constructed from the two-dimensional Gaussian free field (GFF) by modifying the variance along the scales in the neighborhood of each point. The construction can be seen as a local martingale transform and is akin to the time-inhomogeneous branching random walk. In the case where the variance takes finitely many values, we compute the first order of the maxim… ▽ More
