We construct (2+1)-dimensional lattice systems, which we call fusion surface models. These models have finite non-invertible symmetries described by general fusion 2-categories. Our method can be applied to build microscopic models with, for example, anomalous or non-anomalous one-form symmetries, 2-group symmetries, or non-invertible one-form symmetries that capture non-abelian anyon statistics. The construction of these models generalizes the construction of the 1+1d anyon chains formalized by Aasen, Fendley, and Mong. Along with the fusion surface models, we also obtain the corresponding three-dimensional classical statistical models, which are 3d analogues of the 2d Aasen-Fendley-Mong height models. In the construction, the "symmetry TFTs" for fusion 2-category symmetries play an important role.

Given any symmetry acting on a $d$-dimensional quantum field theory, there is an associated $(d+1)$-dimensional topological field theory known as the Symmetry TFT (SymTFT). The SymTFT is useful for decoupling the universal quantities of quantum field theories, such as their generalized global symmetries and 't Hooft anomalies, from their dynamics. In this work, we explore the SymTFT for theories with Kramers-Wannier-like duality symmetry in both $(1+1)$d and $(3+1)$d quantum field theories. After constructing the SymTFT, we use it to reproduce the non-invertible fusion rules of duality defects, and along the way we generalize the concept of duality defects to \textit{higher} duality defects. We also apply the SymTFT to the problem of distinguishing intrinsically versus non-intrinsically non-invertible duality defects in $(1+1)$d.

We numerically study an anyon chain based on the Haagerup fusion category, and find evidence that it leads in the long-distance limit to a conformal field theory whose central charge is $\sim 2$. Fusion categories generalize the concept of finite group symmetries to non-invertible symmetry operations, and the Haagerup fusion category is the simplest one which comes neither from finite groups nor affine Lie algebras. As such, ours is the first example of conformal field theories which have truly exotic generalized symmetries.

Abstract:
We prove that in $(3+1)d$ quantum field theories with $\mathbb{Z}_N$ symmetry, certain anomalies forbid a symmetry-preserving vacuum state with a gapped spectrum. In particular, this applies to discrete chiral symmetries which are frequently present in gauge theories as we illustrate in examples. Our results also constrain the long-distance behavior of certain condensed matter systems such as Weyl…

In particular, this applies to discrete chiral symmetries which are frequently present in gauge theories as we illustrate in examples. Our results also constrain the long-distance behavior of certain condensed matter systems such as Weyl-semimetals and may have applications to crystallographic phases with symmetry protected topological order. These results may be viewed as analogs of the Lieb-Schultz-Mattis theorem for continuum field theories.

Anomalies are renormalization group invariants that constrain the dynamics of quantum field theories. We show that certain anomalies for discrete global symmetries imply that the underlying theory either spontaneously breaks its generalized global symmetry or is gapless. We identify an obstruction, formulated in terms of the anomaly inflow action, that must vanish if a symmetry preserving gapped phase, i.e. a unitary topological quantum field theory, exits with the given anomaly. Our result is similar to the $2d$ Lieb-Schultz-Mattis theorem but applies more broadly to continuum theories in general spacetime dimension with various types of discrete symmetries including higher-form global symmetries. As a particular application, we use our result to prove that certain $4d$ non-abelian gauge theories at $θ=π$ cannot flow at long distances to a phase which simultaneously, preserves time-reversal symmetry, is confining, and is gapped. We also apply our obstruction to $4d$ adjoint QCD and constrain its dynamics.

We formulate a family of spin Topological Quantum Filed Theories (spin-TQFTs) as fermionic generalization of bosonic Dijkgraaf-Witten TQFTs. They are obtained by gauging $G$-equivariant invertible spin-TQFTs, or, in physics language, gauging the interacting fermionic Symmetry Protected Topological states (SPTs) with a finite group $G$ symmetry. We use the fact that the latter are classified by Pontryagin duals to spin-bordism groups of the classifying space $BG$. We also consider unoriented analogues, that is $G$-equivariant invertible pin$^\pm$-TQFTs (fermionic time-reversal-SPTs) and their gauging. We compute these groups for various examples of abelian $G$ using Adams spectral sequence and describe all corresponding TQFTs via certain bordism invariants in dimensions 3, 4, and other. This gives explicit formulas for the partition functions of spin-TQFTs on closed manifolds with possible extended operators inserted. The results also provide explicit classification of 't Hooft anomalies of fermionic QFTs with finite abelian group symmetries in one dimension lower. We construct new anomalous boundary deconfined spin-TQFTs (surface fermionic topological orders). We explore SPT and SET (symmetry enriched topologically ordered) states, and crystalline SPTs protected by space-group (e.g. translation $\mathbb{Z}$) or point-group (e.g. reflection, inversion or rotation $C_m$) symmetries, via the layer-stacking construction.
