A reduction of the "cycles plus $K_4$'s" problem
Abstract: Let $H$ be a 2-regular graph and let $G$ be obtained from $H$ by gluing in vertex-disjoint copies of $K_4$. The "cycles plus $K_4$'s" problem is to show that $G$ is 4-colourable; this is a special case of the \emph{Strong Colouring Conjecture}. In this paper we reduce the "cycles plus $K_4$'s" problem to a specific 3-colourability problem. In the 3-colourability problem, vertex-disjoint triangles… ▽ More

Monadic ortholattices: completions and duality
Abstract: We show that the variety of monadic ortholattices is closed under MacNeille and canonical completions. In each case, the completion of $L$ is obtained by forming an associated dual space $X$ that is a monadic orthoframe. This is a set with an orthogonality relation and an additional binary relation satisfying certain conditions. For the MacNeille completion, $X$ is formed from the non-zero element… ▽ More

Abstract: Let $G$ be a $d$-regular graph and let $F\subseteq\{0, 1, 2, \ldots, d\}$ be a list of forbidden out-degrees. Akbari, Dalirrooyfard, Ehsani, Ozeki, and Sherkati conjectured that if $|F|<\tfrac{1}{2}d$, then $G$ should admit an $F$-avoiding orientation, i.e., an orientation where no out-degrees are in the forbidden list $F$. Total coloring graphs with large maximum degree
Abstract: We prove that for any graph $G$, the total chromatic number of $G$ is at most $Δ(G)+2\left\lceil \frac{|V(G)|}{Δ(G)+1} \right\rceil$. This saves one color in comparison with a result of Hind from 1992. In particular, our result says that if $Δ(G)\ge \frac{1}{2}|V(G)|$, then $G$ has a total coloring using at most $Δ(G)+4$ colors. Balanced-chromatic number and Hadwiger-like conjectures
Abstract: Motivated by different characterizations of planar graphs and the 4-Color Theorem, several structural results concerning graphs of high chromatic number have been obtained. Toward strengthening some of these results, we consider the \emph{balanced chromatic number}, $χ_b(\hat{G})$, of a signed graph $\hat{G}$. Group connectivity of 3-edge-connected signed graphs

Abstract: The kth power of a simple graph G, denoted G^k, is the graph with vertex set V(G) where two vertices are adjacent if they are within distance k in G. We are interested in finding lower bounds on the average degree of G^k. Here we prove that if G is connected with minimum degree d > 2 and |V(G)| > (8/3)d, then G^4 has average degree at least (7/3)d. We also prove that if G is a connected d-regular… ▽ More

Packing triangles in weighted graphs
Abstract: Tuza conjectured that for every graph $G$, the maximum size $ν$ of a set of edge-disjoint triangles and minimum size $τ$ of a set of edges meeting all triangles satisfy $τ\leq 2ν$. We consider an edge-weighted version of this conjecture, which amounts to packing and covering triangles in multigraphs. Several known results about the original problem are shown to be true in this context, and some ar… ▽ More

Kempe equivalence of edge-colourings in subcubic and subquartic graphs
Abstract: It is proved that all 4-edge-colourings of a (sub)cubic graph are Kempe equivalent. This resolves a conjecture of the second author. In fact, it is found that the maximum degree Delta=3 is a threshold for Kempe equivalence of (Delta+1)-edge-colourings, as such an equivalence does not hold in general when Delta=4. One extra colour allows a similar result in this latter case however, namely, when De… ▽ More

Z-Pencils
Abstract: The matrix pencil (A,B) = {tB-A | t \in C} is considered under the assumptions that A is entrywise nonnegative and B-A is a nonsingular M-matrix. As t varies in [0,1], the Z-matrices tB-A are partitioned into the sets L_s introduced by Fiedler and Markham. As no combinatorial structure of B is assumed here, this partition generalizes some of their work where B=I. Based on the union of the direct… ▽ More

Inverse tridiagonal Z-matrices
Abstract: In this paper, we consider matrices whose inverses are tridiagonal Z--matrices. Based on a characterization of symmetric tridiagonal matrices by Gantmacher and Krein, we show that a matrix is the inverse of a tridiagonal Z--matrix if and only if, up to a positive scaling of the rows, it is the Hadamard product of a so called weak type $\D$ matrix and a flipped weak type $\D$ matrix whose paramet… ▽ More

Block LU factorization of M-matrices
Abstract: It is well known that any nonsingular M-matrix admits an LU factorization into M-matrices (with L and U lower and upper triangular respectively) and any singular M-matrix is permutation similar to an M-matrix which admits an LU factorization into M-matrices. Varga and Cai establish necessary and sufficient conditions for a singular M-matrix (without permutation) to allow an LU factorization with… ▽ More
